Vote in the Anglo Fan Favorites Tournament, Men of 2013: Semifinals (FINAL FOUR)

BBC AMERICA
ANGLOPHENIA
15 AUGUST, 2013

Quarterfinals are over; on to the semis! But before we move forward, let’s take a look at the last round’s surprising results.

We know that close matches generate huge vote totals. However, we never could have anticipated the almost 500,000 votes in the David Tennant/Alan Rickman quarters battle. (That’s far more votes than in either of our previous years’ finals — truly impressive.) With their topsy-turvy race never budging far from 50/50, Rickman just edged out Tennant, 50.92 percent to 49.08.

This reminds us that, while Rickman had an early exit last year, our 2011 Anglo Fan Favorites champion is very much a factor in 2013, Snape or no Snape. And his AFF record is 1-0 against the towering Benedict Cumberbatch, whom he faces this week.

Cumberbatch drops from No. 1 seed to last seed this week, as he had the smallest vote total of the Final Four. His quarterfinals match with Sir Ian McKellen, a legend to be sure, was never competitive, leaving no real need for fans to stuff the ballot box to secure Cumberbatch’s ultimate landslide victory. As a result, Cumberbatch only required 44,000 quarterfinals votes to win while Rickman needed 251,000. Against the resurgent Rickmaniacs, Benedict’s fans will surely have to mobilize this round to get their lad into the finals.

Meanwhile, last year’s champion Tom Hiddleston looks strong as ever this year. He was challenged early on by Merlin‘s Colin Morgan, but Hiddles eventually found a comfortable cushion of votes and never looked back. Could Hiddleston find himself defending his title next week in the finals, possibly in a Cumberematch?

Eddie Redmayne, Matt Smith, Nicholas Hoult: Who Will Play 'Poldark' In The BBC's Reboot Of The 70s Period Drama? by Holly Williams | 10 May 2013 (CONTACT MUSIC)

Eddie Redmayne - 2013 MTV Movie Awards

'Poldark' is set to return to our screens in a brand new reboot almost four decades on from the first episode premiere of the original series.

The BBC costume drama was first aired in 1975, based on the series of books by Winston Graham. It follows the trials and tribulations of Army Officer Ross Poldark's love life as he returns to Cornwall to find that the love of his life, Elizabeth, is set to marry his cousin. Embittered and unable to move on from his stolen love, he marries a simple servant girl named Demelza as the rest of his once idyllic life crashed around him.

Filming for the new series is set to begin later this year in Cornwall, though producers are still searching for the right candidate to play the coveted lead role. So far, suggestions as to who might land the part include 'Les Miserables' actor Eddie Redmayne, Matt Smith of 'Doctor Who', 'Kick-Ass' star Aaron Johnson, Jonas Armstrong from 'Robin Hood', 'Merlin''s Colin Morgan, Rob James Collier from 'Downton Abbey' and 'Warm Bodies' actor Nicholas Holt.

National Television Awards 2013: Downton Abbey beats Doctor Who, Sherlock and Merlin to top prize Julian Fellowes' drama was crowned the cream of the year's TV drama at the annual awards ceremony (RADIO TIMES)

Julian Fellowes' period drama beat Merlin to the prize and also made it an award-free night for Sherlock and Doctor Who after their stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Matt Smith missed out in the Best Drama Performance category to Colin Morgan.

Phyllis Logan, who plays Mrs Hughes in the ITV series, accepted the award, saying "To be in such exhalted company as the other nominees is doubly exhalting". She also praised Fellowes for "capturing the imagination of you all, and everyone around the world".
