Sean Bean: Spend a thrilling 'Seven Days' in South Africa SEPTEMBER 18, 2012 (MC HERALD)

A movie version of an author's book always seems to cement their reputation. Look no further than South African author Deon Meyer's Barry award-winning adaptation of 13 Hours, starring Sean Bean, the guy who lost his head in Game Of Thrones.

Bean will play detective Captain Bennie Griessel of the South African Police Squad (SAPS), first featured in Devil's Peak. Meyer's latest Griessel thriller, Seven Days, is Bennie's third crime outing, so you don't have far to read. The guy is so good, though, you'll probably want to collect all eight of his novels.

At the opening of Seven Days, Bennie's about to make one of the biggest accomplishments of his life. Not the fact that he's gone 227 days without a drink. Bennie's escorting his girlfriend, acclaimed singer and recovering alcoholic Alexa Bernard, to a glittering night at the music hall where she'll be making her comeback. That is, if Bennie can keep Alexa sober.

An inopportune phone call takes Bennie away from his lovely sidetrack. He's been assigned to the SAPS elite homicide force, the Hawks, for a very strange case. Two policemen have been shot by an unknown sniper. His email demands are simple: arrest the murderer of high-powered female lawyer Hanneke Sloet or another officer gets shot.

Sloet was stabbed in her luxury apartment 40 days earlier. The case has gone cold. Not anymore. Griessel puts everything on hold, including his love life, his daughter and her hulking new boyfriend, and his son's proposed tattoo, to fly with the Hawks on an impossible case.

Sean Bean Signs On To Star In The Devil's Peak Trilogy published: 2012-05-08 20:27:02 Author: Jesse Carp

Sean Bean is a wonderful actor and even though he's tough enough in real life to shake off a stabbing and have another pint, his characters seem to have a tough time making it out of the given project alive. In fact, it's hard to think of a major film or television series in which Bean didn't suffer some untimely end a la (SPOILERS) GoldenEye's 006, Lord of the Rings' Boromir, or, even more recently, Missing's Paul Winstone. Obviously, this is an exaggeration but it is still nice to see him land a project that seems to offer him a character with some stability.

Well, stability in respect to 'staying alive' anyway since the actor has just signed on for the lead role in the first book in Deon Meyer's "Devil's Peak Trilogy." Variety reports that Bean will star as Detective Benny Griessel in the cinematic adaptation of the book series that starts with Devil's Peak. Griessel is a recovering alcoholic who is trying to win back the trust of his family as well as solve the case of a vigilante killer with a rapidly rising body count. And I don't want to jump to any conclusions but since this is the first of a planned trilogy (the followup novels include Meyer's "13 Hours" and "7 Days") the actor might finally make it out of this one alive! Who am I kidding, he's probably doomed.
