Brendan Coyle reveals MacLaine lunch date (INDEPENDENT WOMAN)

30 JUNE 2013

Downton Abbey star Brendan Coyle has revealed he and Shirley MacLaine have formed a firm friendship on the show.

The 79-year-old Hollywood actress previously confessed she had a crush on the actor, who plays valet John Bates in the hit ITV period drama.

Brendan revealed Shirley took him out to lunch when she joined the show, as their characters didn't have any scenes together in the last series, because Bates was in prison accused of murdering his ex-wife.

Brendan, 49, confessed: "It's very rarely that I get starstruck with actors, no matter how big they are, it's very rare for me. Footballers yes, actors no.

"Because we weren't going to have any scenes together, because I was stuck in prison, she wanted to meet me for lunch. And my memory of that lunch is me sitting there doing 'It's Shirley MacLaine! It's Shirley MacLaine!' like an idiot.

BRENDAN COYLE: Sharp: Kissing Coyle no big deal (BELFAST TELEGRAPH)

Lesley Sharp has said it was no big deal kissing heartthrob and co-star Brendan Coyle.

She said the pair became friends after meeting on the set of Starlings.

"We hit it off from day one. We've got a great friendship and enjoy hanging out with each other and chatting when the cameras aren't rolling.

"So that's terrific because it means all that we have as Lesley and Brendan goes into Jan and Terry.

"One of the lovely things about coming back to Starlings was thinking, 'Oh it's great, I'm going to see Brendan again, we're going to get the chance to talk rubbish and laugh about silly things'."

Starlings starts on Sky1 on Tuesday July 2.

By ALEX WEST
Published: 3 hrs ago

The actor — famed for his Bafta-nominated portrayal of the respectful flunky in ITV1’s period drama — hit the roof in a spat over his hatred of Lady Thatcher.

NHS consultant Roberta Knighton told him Twitter comments he posted about the ex-Tory PM were “beneath” him.

Fuming Coyle, 49, hit back: “Hard to know how to respond to that... but go f*** yourself feels about right.”

He then said: “You have no idea what is beneath me... p.s. go f*** yourself x”. Then he blocked her from viewing his account.

Brendan Coyle:Downton Abbey Brings Debussy to the Temple (HITC)

The well-known pianist, Lucy Parham, has teamed up with Brendan Coyle, better known as John Bates from the popular series, Downtown Abbey, to make sumptuous music together.

Brendan’s role was to lure us into the rather complicated life of Claude Debussy, while Lucy played suitable musical illustration to the informative text. If this sounds a bit instructive and boring it certainly was not; I never realized what a complicated life Debussy led and how this is reflected so clearly in his music.

This boy genius from humble background was accepted at the world famous Conservatoire in Paris at the age of 10, and won the coveted Prix de Rome allowing him a two-year stay at the Villa Medici with other artists. Much reason for joy, one would have thought. But not so for Debussy, who struggled vehemently to find his own way, his unique way of representing his feelings about his life and the world  in which he lived in in his music. Only very close friends were not seen by him as a hindrance to that. His many women and two wives didn't give him much to enjoy, either.

Brendan Coyle: Hollywood not a mecca for me (YAHOO NEWS)

Brendan Coyle has insisted he won't be following some of his fellow Brits to LA anytime soon.

The British actor's star is rising as a result of his portrayal of brooding valet John Bates in Downton Abbey, but he revealed he doesn't really feel the lure of Hollywood.

He said: "It's never been this kind of mecca for me, America, the way it is for some actors, I don't really get that. I've done plays on Broadway a couple of times and loved being in New York and working there but I've never filmed anything in the States so I'd be curious as to that, but again it's all about the writing and all about the parts, it's not about Hollywood.

"It doesn't mean anything to me."

The third series of Downton is coming up, but Brendan, 48, can next be seen in new Sky1 comedy Starlings.
While the premise of an oddball extended family rubbing along together in a detached Derbyshire home immediately struck a chord, he decided a change in direction would also stave off being typecast.
