The success of
Colin Firth and The King’’s Speech at the BAFTAs meant the country started on a cultural high, as he and the ever-so-slightly publicised film cleaned up at pretty much every awards ceremony going.
The year also saw the finale of another huge British film success as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (the eighth film of the series) had its vast Trafalgar Square premiere and send-off.
There were a few tears on the red carpet as
Daniel Radcliffe,
Emma Watson and
Rupert Grint bid farewell to the series and to a childhood of acting. There were also presumably a few tears among the producers, who will now have to find a new cash cow.
But in the world of celebrity, 2011 really belonged to the weddings. Top of the list of course was April’s Royal Wedding extravaganza, serving as both a national morale boost and (as it was apparently viewed by billions around the world) a big, pomp-filled advert for Great Britain. Perhaps the biggest star of the day, however, was
Princess Beatrice’s hat, which put the fascinating into fascinator. It quickly became an internet phenomenon and a good-humoured Beatrice put it up for auction, which raised over £80,000 for charity. The wedding, of course, meant that for once, tabloid favourite
Kate Moss had to play second fiddle to another Kate. Moss did still manage a glamorous Cotswolds affair of her own in July, with a festival-esque wedding to
Jamie Hince, who wore the sort of suit that will embarrass their children for years to come.
Later that month saw the second, and slightly more low-key, royal wedding as Zara Phillips married her England rugby playing boyfriend Mike Tindall in Edinburgh.
In October
Sir Paul McCartney was back at Old Marylebone Town Hall (the site of his first wedding) as he and girlfriend
Nancy Shevell said “I do”. The reception was held at McCartney’s house in North London, where there were more celebrities than you could shake a bouquet at, an exception being Macca’s old Liverpudlian friend
Cilla Black, who revealed that she was “NFI”, or in her words “not flippin’ invited”.
One wedding did manage to escape the cameras, however, as
Daniel Craig employed those subterfuge skills he has learned playing James Bond to keep his wedding to
Rachel Weisz a secret.
