Benedict Cumberbatch-fronted detective series Sherlock has been nominated in the best short-form TV drama category at the 2012 Writers’ Guild Awards.

The show’s creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, along with Reichenbach Fall screenwriter Steve Thompson, will be pitted against the writers of ITV1’s Appropriate Adult and Channel 4’s This is England ’88 at the ceremony in November.

Earlier this year Moffat won best writer at the Baftas for the episode A Scandal in Belgravia but, despite being nominated, the trio of Moffat, Gatiss and Thompson missed out on the writers' honour at the Broadcasting Press Guild Awards.

Elsewhere on the 2012 Writers’ Guild shortlist, Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures has earned a nomination in the best children’s TV script category for the story The Curse of Clyde Langer, and will go up against Horrible Histories and the 4 O’Clock Club.
