Speculation over the latest series of Sherlock has intensified after Martin Freeman was spotted with a stunt double as smoke emerged from a set in Cardiff Bay.

Nothing escaped the beady eyes of the fans, who followed the crew to Bute Street for a second day of filming, and lined the streets hoping for a glimpse of the action. Yesterday Benedict Cumberbatch was seen filming in Cardiff city centre, along with The Killer star Lars Mikkelsen who will play his nemesis in the latest series of Sherlock.

Today Freeman, who plays Sherlock’s sidekick Dr John Watson, was spied on set at the Grade II listed building 142 Knightbridge, wearing a pale checkered shirt under a black bomber jacket, with blue jeans.

Fans watched as the actor knocked a door and rumours spread like wildfire as he stood next to a stunt double, with smoke wafting from the set.

But the image of the cool, detached character, supposed to be a former army doctor exhausted by his service in Afghanistan, was shattered when Freeman took a break to eat a banana.

Twitter went into overdrive as users shared pictures of the set, using the hash tag “setlock”.

Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the eponymous hero, was also spotted walking into the building around midday, with his costume hidden by a dark hoodie.

His fans went wild, with Twitter user Nicole Chan commenting: “I just love his curls”.
