***SPOILERS***Downton Abbey series three, episode five: preview pictures and predictions (RADIO TIMES)

Last week's episode of Downton Abbey certainly brought with it a fair amount of new plot twists.

Edith seemed to have made her peace with being jilted at the altar and turned her attention to universal suffrage, even getting a letter published in The Times (much to Carson's alarm).

Mary told Matthew, rather sharply, to "pull your weight" around the estate so he delved into the inner workings of Downton only to find out that the Abbey is being "mismanaged". A lot of macho eyebrow-raising followed, so it's only a matter of time before the new masters of the house come to blows...

Meanwhile, Ethel and her heartbreaking storyline were back, leaving plenty of viewers in need of a tissue when she gave away her (incredibly cute) little boy.

But the biggest story of the week was Branson getting caught up in an Irish rebel plot. The ex-chauffeur arrived on Downton's doorstep alone on a rainy night without pregnant Sybil, whom he had left behind to fend for herself. The revelation provoked an angry Earl to yell "Go to bed!" before later revealing that if Branson ever set foot on Irish soil again he would be arrested by the authorities.

Meanwhile, there was a post-related fiasco. Bates wasn't writing to Anna but it turned out in the end that he wasn't receiving her letters either. What a kerfuffle! And new footman Jimmy sent all the maids' - as well as Thomas's - hearts a-flutter, while new kitchen maid Ivy put Daisy's back up when she seemed to attract Alfred's attention...

So what's next? We've got pictures of the drama to come this Sunday, so as usual we've made some spurious predictions...

Downton Abbey Series 3 Episode 3 Review (SPOILERS) (TV EQUALS)

Here’s the thing about Downton Abbey: It’s only been on for two full series so far, plus these three latest episodes and a christmas special, but it feels like it’s been on for much longer — probably because events have spanned almost a decade. One thing that’s been consistent all that time is Edith, or more specifically, how Edith is the most unlucky Crawley. That poor girl just cannot catch a break.

To backtrack a bit, this week saw Edith finally preparing to marry Sir Anthony. Robert still wasn’t convinced that the pairing was the best thing for his daughter, in fact none of the Crawley’s seemed particularly excited by Edith’s intended, but the wedding approached seemingly without a hitch. Edith, who usually views herself (or is viewed) as the ‘ugly’ sister, looked stunning in her wedding dress. Even Mary set aside their differences to wish her happiness. And then came the ceremony.

Or not. Before the priest could even get out his first sentence, Anthony was cutting him off and telling Edith how he can’t marry her because she shouldn’t waste her life on him. It’s nothing Edith hasn’t heard before, but really, on her wedding day, Anthony? Shame on you. Edith is thoroughly heartbroken and by the end of the episode she was calling herself the ‘useful spinster’.

Sadly that’s exactly what Edith seems to be. I know it’s only a television series, and drama is necessary, but while the other characters’ low points always lead to happier times, poor Edith is consistently set aside. I really hope she’s going to get a decent happy ending one day.

Downton Abbey Second Episode Spoilers (METRO)

By Caroline Westbrook - 23rd September, 2012

The second episode of the new series of Downton Abbey offers the strongest hints yet that Lady Edith may finally be about to walk up the aisle.

The latest series already got its fair share of wedding fever when it kicked off last week with an episode which saw Lady Mary and Matthew Crawley get married.

However the second episode sees Lady Edith - played by Laura Carmichael - once again declare her intentions to Sir Anthony Strallan (Robert Bathurst), who is 25 years her senior - as they vow to begin a new life together as a married couple.

And although no plot details have been revealed, a trailer for the next episode reportedly shows shots of Lady Edith in a wedding dress and outside a church with her sisters - suggesting that nuptials are indeed on the cards, in spite of her family's disapproval.
