Are Benedict Cumberbatch & Gary Oldman Locked In For STAR WARS: EPISODE VII?

COMIC BOOK MOVIE.COM
By Mark "RorMachine" Cassidy - 2/24/2014

At this stage I know we're all fed up with constant rumors and would like some solid news - but, MarketSaw have been on the ball when it comes to Star Wars related scoops in the past, so their latest casting updates might be worth paying attention to..

MarketSaw (who actually broke the news that Lucasfilm had plans for the new Star Wars trilogy in the first place) are reporting on some casting updates for the J.J. Abrams directed flick, as well as providing some possible plot information. According to them not only are Ford, Hamill and Fisher locked in, but Billy Dee Williams (Lando), Ian McDiarmid (Emperor Palpatine) Anthony Daniels (C3PO) and Warwick Davies (Wicket) too. As for the new faces, they reckon that long rumored cast addition Benedict Cumberbatch is in, and so is Gary Oldman - who recently confirmed that he'd had some "conversations", but never really indicated if he would take them up on the offer or not. Here's the most interesting part:

"I believe Cumberbatch and Oldman were pursued for the same role. I don't know how that will work out with the script changes, but I'm told they are both involved."

Star Wars fans have been eagerly awaiting more concrete news about the anticipated Episode VII. While plenty of rumors have been circulating, including one involving a certain Sherlock star possibly joining the cast, full confirmations have been slim so far. The latest casting rumor for the project is a report that Benedict Cumberbatch's casting confirmation is going to happen at some point in the near future.

Via BleedingCool.com, TheFilmChronicles reports that the expected big casting announcement will be confirmation that Cumberbatch is signing on for the film. No specifics on who he might be playing were mentioned, though the site says casting calls suggests there might be a few early twentysomthings brought in to play offspring of Han Solo, Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker. If they're aiming for teens or early twenty somethings for those roles, that rules out Cumberbatch, who's 37. But perhaps he's related to some of the lead characters in another way. Or maybe he's a completely new creation. A hero or a villain? Well, we know he's capable of both.

While we still have to wait for actual confirmation of this news, Bleeding Cool points out that Cumberbatch did recently drop out of Guillermo Del Toro's Crimson Peak, though the reason given for that at the time was said to not be due to involvement in another project, which may have been the case at the time. The site also points out the timing of this news, as it comes a week ahead of the DVD/Blu-ray release of Star Trek Into Darkness, another beloved sci-fi franchise, and the film that ties Cumberbatch to Star Wars: Episode VII director JJ Abrams.

Episode VII Rumor Says Ewan McGregor Will Play Obi-Wan Again

Latest Star Wars: Episode VII Rumor Says Ewan McGregor Will Play Obi-Wan Again image

If you want to start your own Star Wars rumor, now is the time. With nothing officially confirmed about the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII beyond the director and writer, there's a limitless universe full of story options, and any rumor can be treated as fact because, hey, who knows what might happen. And fresh off some specious talk that Emperor Palpatine might appear in Episode VII comes a new rumor of a familiar face who might bring back The Force.

So what hard proof do we have? None. And it's been like that for every Star Wars rumor we've fielded since the project was announced last fall, from the Ryan Gosling casting news to talk of Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill reprising their roles. It's all talk, as notoriously secretive director J.J. Abrams preps the project to shoot in England early next year and keeps the lid on his "mystery box" to the point that there were booing fans at Disney's D23 convention last weekend. Ewan McGregor's potential return isn't exactly the kind of news fans have been salivating for all these years… but hey, it would be a start. At this point if Abrams and company would even confirm a title it would be progress.
