Why is The Hobbit making some moviegoers sick? (THE WEEK)

The effects in Peter Jackson's new film are dizzying, according to some audience members. And not in a good way

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, due to hit theaters on Dec. 14, is already having an unexpected effect. From accusations of "selling out" to allegations of animal abuse, director Peter Jackson's latest adaptation of a J. R. R. Tolkien novel has weathered its share of controversy, says Catherine Shoard at Britain's Guardian, but now, some audience members at advance screenings are reporting that the film's innovative, high-speed cinematography technique is literally nauseating them. Here's what you should know:

What technique did the movie's cinematographers use?
The film was shot in 3D at a camera speed of 48 frames-per-second (fps) instead of at the traditional rate of 24. Since this technique captures twice the usual amount of frames, it's said to create a more fluid and immersive picture that eliminates flicker and motion blur. "What you get is a real sense of reality," Ian McKellan, one of the film's stars, explained on Live! with Kelly and Michael. "And with the 3D, it doesn't come out at you, but rather takes you inside."

Warner Bros. has made it official -- Superman pic Man of Steel will be converted to 3D in post-production.

Kate Winslet's Titanic 3D response: 'Oh my God, make it stop!' (NEWS.COM.AU)

Titanic director and 3D enthusiast James Cameron has shown Winslet a portion of the 3D rejig.

"I was literally like, 'Oh my God, make it stop! Is that me? Oh my God, that's me. Block my ears, somebody! Somebody club out my senses. Make it f---ing stop!' " she says.

"And Leo looks so young and so skinny!"

The film's Oscar-winning producer Jon Landau will be in Australia this month to promote the re-release.

But Winslet has said she and DiCaprio (above) won't be having a Titanic reunion. "No, we'll just sit around going, 'Can you f---ing believe this? Isn't this weird?'" Titanic 3D opens April 5

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has launched its official one-year countdown to release.

The first of two Peter Jackson-directed Lord of the Rings prequels will hit theatres on December 14, 2012, reuniting cast members Sir Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, Elijah Wood and Orlando Bloom.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey follows hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) in his attempt to take back the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the dragon Smaug. As he travels across Middle-earth, Bilbo encounters the devious Gollum (Serkis) and first comes into contact with the creature's precious "ring" which ties their fates together.

An official synopsis describes the mythic meeting of Bilbo and Gollum: "The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug.

"Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

"Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.

"Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum's "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities… A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know."

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey brings together an ensemble cast of acclaimed actors and actresses including Cate Blanchett, Christopher Lee, Ian Holm, Evangeline Lilly, Sylvester McCoy and Hugo Weaving.

The second part of Peter Jackson's prequel, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, is released in cinemas worldwide two years from now on December 13, 2013.

Screenplays for the films have been written by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Guillermo del Toro and Jackson.

The Hobbit movies, which are being produced back-to-back by Jackson, began shooting in New Zealand in March.

The first trailer for The Hobbit: There and Back Again will premiere in the US in front of The Adventures of Tintin from December 21.

The big screen version of the hit musical Les Miserables will be shot in 2D, its director Tom Hooper has confirmed.

The Oscar-winning director of the King's Speech said he had been "very tempted" to use 3D.

But he worried that some people might "physically struggle" with the format.

Starring Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe, the movie begins shooting in March with an initial release date set for December 2012.

Crowe will play police inspector Javert opposite Jackman's ex-convict Jean Valjean in the musical, based on Victor Hugo's epic French novel.

Hooper's "dream cast" also includes Anne Hathaway as Fantine, and Eddie Redmayne - who appears in My Week With Marilyn - as student Marius.

King's Speech stars Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter are also said to be attached to the project.

Speculation that Les Miserables might shoot in 3D has been swirling around for several months.

"I can definitely announce it's good old-fashioned 2D," Hooper told the BBC at the British Independent Film Awards.

"I did test 3D and I was very tempted - I think it is a very interesting new form."

The director said his decision was informed by a desire to make a film that would "connect with everyone".

"One of the things I'm most proud of with The King's Speech is how it managed to do that, whether you're eight or 80 years old.

"So I slightly worry with 3D that some people will physically struggle with it. If you have a certain type of eyesight it can be more demanding than watching a normal movie.

"With a two-and-a-half hour film, I didn't want to make something that anyone might think 'That's not for me, because I don't like the medium'.

"I wanted to make a film that would touch everyone. I believe the story is so strong, 3D is not essential."

Hooper added that the casting of Eponine and Cosette would be announced soon.

"I've never done a film where big star actors are as obsessed with being in it as this!" he said.

Converting older 2D movies in to 3D seems to be all the craze now a days, with films like Titanic and Star Wars taking advantage. Now, according to Elijah Wood, The Lord Of The Rings could be making the jump as well.

With all the 3D conversions that are being done these days it only seems likely The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy should get the same treatment. While there are no concrete plans yet, series actor Elijah Wood, who played Frodo Baggins, says that there is some talk that the conversion could happen. Said Wood "I think it would be cool to see. There's talk of releasing a dimensionalised trilogy eventually. I'm okay with doing post-process 3D, as long as someone takes the time. What I'm upset about is when a movie doesn't have the budget and the time to devote to it and they're not fine-tuning the detail of that, because it can look really bad and cheap. But I know that they wouldn't dimensionalise it unless it was a super meticulous process." Wood pointed to movies like Titanic and Star Wars as reasons for The Rings Trilogy possibly making the conversion. Even taking a dig at Star Wars releasing Episode One first, "I mean, Titanic's coming out in 3D now, and Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, which means we have to wait three movies to get to the [frick]ing good shit, it's unbelievable, I'm like, we have to wait three years for that? You're doing Episode I first? [frustrated squeal], what a bummer!"

He then talked a little bit about getting back in to the character that is Frodo for the upcoming prequel to the Rings Trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Wood said that he watched Fellowship of The Ring again to get back the sense of how the character spoke. Also said it brought back some good memories revisiting a four year chapter in his life. When talking about being on set for The Hobbit Wood recalls, "It felt like a giant family reunion in a way. The weirdest thing was being on set, looking down at my feet and it just feeling oddly normal, like, 'Here we are, doing another scene at Bag End, 10 years later.'"
