Exclusive: Benedict Cumberbatch Set for NBC's 'Red Nose Day'

Clowns, rejoice: The plush schnozz is about to become Hollywood's fashion accessory of choice.

May 21 marks America's first "Red Nose Day," a live-entertainment event that recruits famous faces for a night of foolery and fundraising. Originating in the U.K., the annual escapade has raised more than $1 billion for charity over the last 30 years. NBC will air the first stateside "Red Nose Day," a three-hour circus of musical performances, sketch comedy, and new videos produced by Funny or Die. The shorts are often high-caliber wish fulfillment; March's U.K. show saw a James Bond-themed short film that paired Daniel Craig with Roger Moore.

Who should you expect at the show? Esquire can exclusively announce that Benedict Cumberbatch, Sir Ian McKellen, and Orlando Bloom will be on hand, lending acting services to whatever hair-brained schemes Funny or Die has cooking. Just because "Red Nose Day" is jumping the Atlantic doesn't mean the British aren't coming with.

Joining the trio on "Red Nose Day" are the previously announced Will Ferrell, Jack Black, John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Michelle Rodriguez, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sam Smith, John Legend, Matt Lauer, Carson Daly, Bill and Melinda Gates, Nick Offerman, Elizabeth Banks, Chris Pine, Jeff Goldblum, Billy Eichner, Martin Short, Laura Linney, Anna Kendrick, and Sean "P. Gwyneth Paltrow is miffed by Colin Firth's 'conscious uncoupling' gag after he made the reference while announcing that he had dropped out of his role voicing Paddington Bear in a new movie.

A source spilled the beans that the Academy Award winner was not happy at Firth for making fun of her and Chris Martin's divorce, the Mirror reported.

A source asserted that to compare the 'Paddington Bear' film to the duo's marriage was just silly in Paltrow's opinion.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin kept things hot and heavy over the weekend.

Following a Coldplay concert in Florida, the band's lead singer and his wife made their way out to LIV at Fontainebleau Resort in Miami, where they appeared to be having a blast.

"Chris and Gwyneth drank champagne and she was all over him," a source tells PEOPLE. "They looked so much in love. Gwyneth danced all night."

The last time they were caught kissing on camera was almost a decade ago.

Notoriously private couple Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow put on an extremely rare public display of affection at his concert last week.

The couple, who refuse to walk the red carpet or pose for pictures in public together, thrilled the audience at Coldplay's Miami show with a loving kiss.

Endearingly, the actress seemed to be completely disarmed by her rocker husband, blushing and covering her face as those around her cheered and wolf-whistled in approval.

It is unknown what prompted the artist to let his guard down, but his wife appeared to appreciate it.

The couple have spent some time apart recently as Coldplay tour the US and Gwyneth films the latest Iron Man installment in North Carolina, so perhaps Miami was a rendezvous for the busy pair.

JAMES CORDEN: THE WOMAN WHO SAVED ME (EXPRESS CO.)

Almost teary and a bit stuttery, Corden could only gush about how he was “overwhelmed” to be mentioned in the same breath as other nominees James Earl Jones, Frank Langella, John Lithgow and “my favourite actor in the world” Philip Seymour Hoffman. “To be on a list with you was enough,” he said, addressing the other actors in the audience.

His performance has been likened to Gwyneth Paltrow’s overwhelmingly gushy, weepy 1999 Oscar acceptance speech but actually Corden’s wasn’t an embarrassing, cringeworthy affair.

It seemed heartfelt, sincere and rather modest and when Corden went on to speak about his fiancée Julia Carey he would have certainly won over the emotion-loving American audience.


“My girlfriend Julia gave birth to our son five days before we started rehearsals,” Corden said as the cameras panned to the attractive blonde sitting in the auditorium. “She’s my baby mama and I can’t wait to marry her. Seriously, I would not be holding this if it wasn’t for her. She made me say ‘us’ instead of ‘I’ and ‘we’ instead of ‘me’ and I love her. Thank you very much.”

The speech was a far cry from the one he gave at the Baftas in 2008 when Corden – then riding high on the success of the BBC comedy series Gavin & Stacey – went on stage and complained that he shouldn’t have won two awards, he should have won three.

That was the old, arrogant Corden and the actor has already credited Julia, who has worked as a TV producer and for the charity Save The Children, for making him a better person. His Tony Award speech has clearly emphasised the point.

It’s also true that after he met Julia in 2010 his life took an upward swing. Before that, it had been a rather turbulent affair of highs and lows. As the son of Salvation Army parents Corden has said he “couldn’t have grown up in a more secure and lovely family” but he was always an attention-seeker and so when he scaled the heights of fame, it was like a dream come true.

Sir Paul Mccartney Reuters Sir Paul Mccartney has asked his celebrity friends including Gwyneth Paltrow and Kevin Spacey to share their favourite vegetarian recipes for a new cook book. The Beatles star, has co-written the Meat Free Monday Cookbook as part of his ongoing campaign urging fans to eat less meat. Celebrity contributors to the cookbook include Paltrow and Spacey, who has offered a recipe for lentil stew with pan-fried halloumi and pomegranate, as well as former model Twiggy, who shares her favourite mozzarella pasta dish, Contactmusic reports. MCCartney, a long time vegetarian, shares recipes for refried bean tacos and super vegetable salad, and describes the environmental and financial benefits of giving up meat in the book’s foreword. “In difficult economic times, people discovered that have at least one meat-free day in their week helped their family budget... (We can) make a huge difference for the better and set a new pattern for the future of this beautiful planet that we all inhabit,” he writes.

Stage Version of ‘Shakespeare in Love’ Moving Ahead

“Shakespeare in Love,” the 1998 romantic comedy that won seven Academy Awards, including best picture and acting honors for Gwyneth Paltrow and Judi Dench, is the latest film being eyed for adaptation to the stage. Two leading producers, Disney Theatrical Productions and the British impresario Sonia Friedman, have been holding meetings with the playwright Tom Stoppard – who shared an original screenplay Oscar for “Shakespeare in Love” with Marc Norman – and the director Jack O’Brien about the project, according to theater executives familiar with the creative discussions.
The new version would be a straight play, an exception to the movie-to-stage trend; most films these days are turned into musicals, most recently “Catch Me If You Can,” “Ghost,” “Priscilla Queen of the Desert,” and “Sister Act.” Mr. Stoppard and Mr. O’Brien are long-time collaborators on plays: They won Tony Awards — for best play and best director — in 2007 for Mr. Stoppard’s Russian-history drama “The Coast of Utopia,” and they were both Tony nominees in 2001 for “The Invention of Love.”

No deals have been signed by the two men, but the producers want to collaborate with them as well as with the designer Bob Crowley on the project, according to the executives. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the project is meant to be confidential at this stage.

The plot centers on a young Shakespeare (played in the film by Joseph Fiennes), lovelorn and suffering from writer’s block. In a fit he destroys his latest play, “Romeo and Ethel, the Pirate’s Daughter,” and decides to rewrite it as “Romeo and Juliet,” while falling into a romance with a young would-be actress (Ms. Paltrow) who has disguised herself as a man to star in the new play. Ms. Paltrow won the Oscar for best actress, while Ms. Dench won a supporting actress Oscar for a few brief scenes as Queen Elizabeth I.

Thomas Schumacher, the president of Disney Theatrical, was scheduled to fly from Madrid – where a new production of “The Lion King” opened on Thursday night – to London for business meetings next week. It was not clear if he would be meeting with Mr. Stoppard, though executives described their talks about “Shakespeare in Love” as ongoing. Disney holds the rights to develop “Shakespeare in Love,” which was produced by Miramax Films, which at the time was a part of the Walt Disney Company.

A spokesman for Disney Theatrical on Friday declined to comment on the project. Ms. Friedman is one of the busiest producers in London and New York; she is currently represented on Broadway with “The Mountaintop” and “The Book of Mormon,” and last season was a producer of the Broadway revival of Mr. Stoppard’s “Arcadia” (as was Disney Theatrical) as well as “Jerusalem,” The House of Blue Leaves,” and “La Bete.”

The night before, the 39-year-old actress attended the 10th anniversary screening of her film, The Royal Tennenbaums.

When the film first premiered at the New York Film Festival 10 years ago, the cut featured many Beatles songs, which director Wes Anderson wasn’t able to get the rights for.

“I tried to bribe Paul McCartney. Sex and everything,” Gwyn joked at Thursday’s panel (via MovieFone).

“I ended up taking him bowling, weirdly enough, with Heather Mills, his ex-wife, and Luke Wilson,” she revealed. “Wes put me on a mission. ‘You gotta get the rights!’ He loved the movie, then we went bowling and he said he has nothing to do with the rights.”
