They have been translated in various ways on the big screen.

But in the new adaptation of Snow White, Mirror Mirror, it seems the Seven Dwarves are there to provide comic relief.

In a new trailer of the upcoming movie, viewers have been treated to their first look at the dwarves, who help out heroine Snow White, played by Lily Collins, in her time of need.

The pretty brunette plays an exiled princess who must seek the help of seven 'resourceful rebels' to protect herself from the villianous queen who has taken control of the kingdom.

The film also stars Sean Bean as The King and Armie Hammer, who catapulted to fame playing the dual role of the Winklevoss twins in The Social Network, as handsome Prince Andrew Alcott.

Despite accusations she is trading off her father's fame, 22-year-old Lily actually embarked on her own career two decades ago with a debut role in BBC series Growing Pains at the tender age of two.

She has since starred as Sandra Bullock's daughter in 2009 production The Blind Side and co-starred with Twilight hunk Taylor Lautner in last year's action film Abduction.

The film is a fantastical comedy that tackles inner versus outer beauty. In Mirror Mirror, Collins stars as Princess Snow White, while Roberts plays her nemesis the Evil Queen. The devious matriarch forces the princess into exile, and seizes control of their magical kingdom.

Mirror Mirror co-stars Armie Hammer as the charming Prince Alcott, Nathan Lane as Brighton, the Queen's spineless servant and Sean Bean as the regal King. The film is directed by Tarsem Singh, who previously shot the November blockbuster Immortals.

The start of productions including Skyfall, the 23rd outing in the James Bond franchise, have helped Pinewood Shepperton studios to "perform strongly" over the past four months.

Pinewood Shepperton said "trading and overall revenues" continued to perform strongly between 1 July and 14 November.

The company said this is a continuation of the 37% year-on-year increase in revenue reported in the six months to the end of June.

Pinewood Shepperton said revenues for the film division will be "in line" year on year for the period, as productions including Daniel Craig's third outing as 007, Working Title's Anna Karenina and Universal's Snow White and the Huntsman get underway.

Pinewood said revenues from its TV studio division is "significantly ahead" of the same period in 2010 as demand for its large-scale facilities remains "attractive to producers".

The company's studios hosted primetime shows including Sky's Don't Stop Me Now, The Rob Brydon Show and Lee Mack's All Star Cast during the reporting period.

London takes a starring role in boom for UK movie-makers

 Dustin Hoffman directs Maggie Smith

By Miranda Bryant and Louise Jury

London is at the centre of a boom for British film with nine major movies in production.

Industry experts say film-making in the capital is healthier than ever, with studios heaving, casting agencies busy and some film companies having to find alternative locations because London is so full.

And contrary to fears that the industry would suffer because of public spending cutbacks, the Government announced yesterday that film tax relief is being extended for the next four years.
Six films are being shot in the capital, bringing in millions of pounds of revenue. They are the Bond movie Skyfall starring Daniel Craig; Snow White And The Huntsman with Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron; Anna Karenina with Keira Knightley, World War Z starring Brad Pitt, Quartet with Dame Maggie Smith, and Great Expectations, starring Ralph Fiennes and Helena Bonham Carter.
Three more titles - Wrath Of The Titans, Dark Shadows and 47 Ronin - are in post-production here. London is the third busiest production city in the world, after New York and Los Angeles, with an average 35 crews on the streets every day.

Adrian Wootton, chief executive of Film London, said it was not only good news for the industry, but also the city's economy, tourism industry and jobs market.

He added: "Film London has worked hard to ensure film-makers across the world know that London can, and does, deliver for projects big and small. London has a great wealth of amazing locations, some of the world's best talent and facilities and a commitment from over 250 organisations, agencies and boroughs to welcome filming.

"This is why Hollywood A-listers such as Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz and Daniel Craig have recently been shooting here." The move on tax relief was welcomed by Lord Grade of Yarmouth, chairman of Pinewood Shepperton plc, as one that would "deliver certainty" for UK film-makers and "provide the platform for growth, investment and jobs".

Spending on UK film production hit a record £1.1billion last year, with 75 per cent focused on London and the South-East. Revenue was also generated from associated spending and tourism. Mayor Boris Johnson has praised the industry for generating more than £575million for London in the first six months of this year.

Pinewood Studios - where Snow White And The Huntsman and Skyfall are in production - saw film revenues rise by 68 per cent for the six months to June 30, to £18.2million. Leading agency Mad Dog Casting said business has gone up almost threefold in a year. Head of casting Kate McLaughlin said: "All the studios are jammed and people are being forced to go to other countries to film as it's so busy."

'Snow White': So far, which of the two upcoming movies looks the fairest of them all?

Snow White: The classic fairytale so nice, Hollywood made it twice. It’s true: In 2012 moviegoers will have not one, but two re-imaginings of the timeless tale to choose from and already, some strong opinions about Tarsem Singh’s yet-to-be-titled version (starring, among others, Lily Collins, Armie Hammer, Julia Roberts, Sean Bean, and Nathan Lane) and Rupert Sanders’ Snow White and the Huntsman (with Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, Sam Claflin, and Ian McShane) are being formed. Over the summer, we got our first glimpse of Snow White and the Huntsman at Comic-Con and comments from EW.com readers ranged from “This looks fantastic!” to “Looks like a Tim Burton rip-off.” But now that we’ve seen what the other Snow White film looks like, it’s time to decide once and for all, which looks the fairest of them all?

Looking at Lily Collins and Kristen Stewart‘s Snow Whites side-by-side, it’s clear that we are in for two very different interpretations of the lovely Brothers Grimm’s gal. (As one commenter pointed out, “The name Snow White is in both titles, but they are NOT the same film.”) While I have a feeling Stewart’s Snow White will cause more of an uproar (the character we grew up with never quite looked liked that), it might also garner more interest. Who wants a damsel in distress waiting to be kissed when you’ve got a warrior-like Snow White who looks to be kicking butt and taking names? (All seven of them!) Vote in the Snow White poll below and tell us, based on appearances alone, which one you like better:

How does one pick between two stunning Best Actress winners who are stepping into the shoes of one of the most iconic villains of all-time? At the risk of being put under some spell, I’ll say that they both look they’re going to give poor Snow White a hard time (though based on these photos alone, Julia Roberts looks slightly more Queen, while Charlize Theron looks a bit more Evil.) Okay, now you tell me, PopWatchers, which one of these ladies would you be more likely to take a poisoned apple from? Vote below:

Remember before when I pondered why we’d want a more classic Snow White who was just waiting around to be kissed by a handsome suitor? Well, I forgot to mention that handsome suitor would look an awful lot like Armie Hammer. (In the words of Liz Lemon, he already looks like, “A damn Disney prince.”) Of course, Hammer’s Prince isn’t the only one that would be nice to live happily ever after with. In Snow White and the Huntsman, there’s extra eye candy with Chris Hemsworth and Sam Claflin (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) riding around. How’s a girl, namely Snow White, supposed to choose? Actually, you do that for her PopWatchers, in the poll below:

Which dashing suitor looks the fairest of them all?

After seeing the photos, of which of the Snow White movies are you most excited to see? Or are you equally looking forward to both? Hi ho, hi ho, share in the comments section below!

SEAN BEAN

Writer Of Relativity’s Snow White Movie Admits Project Borne Out Of Desire To Beat ‘Huntsman’

Meet Jason Keller, the last honest man in Hollywood. The writer recently attended the premiere of “Machine Gun Preacher” and the party hearty Vulture were there in attendance and couldn’t help but ask Keller about the still untitled Snow White movie he penned for Relativity. You know, the one that has been competing bitterly with Universal‘s “Snow White And The Huntsman” over release dates, with Relativity so desperate to come out on top first that Tarsem is already filming for a release date of March 16, 2012. That’s right, he’s got less than a year to crank this sucker out. And according to Keller, when he was first hired in December last year, Relativity were so hungry to get things rolling that they started getting production departments open before he had even finished the script.
“‘Snow White’ I wrote in December 2010, and that is unheard of, in terms of writing a script and going into production when it did,” he explained. “I’m just being very frank about it ... at the end of last year, [Relativity] looked around, and they saw Universal was coming out with a Snow White. But they had a script that wasn’t really working, but they knew they wanted to try to keep that, so when they hired me, the first conversation we all had about that was, ‘How do we beat that other project?’ So it was literally something like, ‘We want to beat that other project. We are very, very motivated to do a Snow White project.’”
“I pitched them a take on it,” he said, “and in the same meeting I pitched them a take on it, Tarsem was in the room, he said, ‘I like that take,’ the studio was in the room, they said, ‘We like that take,’ and that minute, they commenced me writing — this is December — and they opened the art department, they opened the costume department, and they started scouting locations. All in the same minute! It hadn’t even been written yet! It was all because there was a derby race. And it all happened to work. I happened to write a script that was good enough in a very short enough period of time to get Julia Roberts, and we didn’t then have to wait for art and costumes because they were already going. So it was a super-cool way to write a movie.”
With Roberts as the Queen, Sean Bean as the King and Armie Hammer as Prince Andrew Alcott, the story will strike a tone between adventure and comedy with Snow White teaming up with a pack of seven dwarfs to take on her evil stepmother who has destroyed the kingdom and killed her father. Keller insists the Relativity picture is far lighter and less intense than the Universal movie and the two pictures will be quite different from one another.
“Ours is not dark. I mean, I know ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ is very intense, and lots of chain mail, and armor, and Kristen Stewart has a sword. Ours is an adventure, ours is funny — it’s a comedic adventure! And there’s some great action in it. It’s stunningly gorgeous, and it’s fun ... Ours will be PG or PG-13, and the other one will probably be a R. We don’t know yet. But ours is nothing like theirs,” Keller explained.
So the big question that remains is whether or not Tarsem’s rushed film will do justice to Keller’s script, which was good enough to grab the attention of Julia Roberts, or if the premise in general was so strong from the start that it could be thrown straight into production. Turning movies around on a dime is certainly nothing new—“X-Men: First Class,” “Green Lantern” and the upcoming “Hunger Games” are two recent examples of films that are being delivered under a severe schedule—but given the public pissing match between the two movies the stakes are raised even higher for Tarsem’s film not only to just be good, but great. If it flops there will be a lot of egg on faces and finger pointing, but if it’s a hit, Relativity will be able to strut their stuff. Either way, Keller’s frank assessment of what happened is pretty refreshing and we’ll soon see if his script was worth the rush.
