Actors of 2011: 4 - Michael Fassbender (Female First)

24 December 2011

Michael Fassbender is one of my favourite actors who is currently working in Hollywood at the moment - and he is proving to be one of the most talented.

He has moved from big budget blockbuster to period drama already in 2011 with a whole host of projects on the horizon for 2012.

This summer he took over the role of Magneto in X-Men: First Class - which went back to the early days of Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr.

The movie followed Erik and Charles as they struggle to understand and accept their powers before meeting for the very first time.

This relationship is central to the movie and it’s great to see it explored in a way that the earlier films did not.

It is a deep seated friendship between their pair - despite them having very different opinions on mutants and humans.

Fassbinder & James McAvoy are perfectly cast and they really do work well together through out this really great addition to the X-Men franchise - fingers crossed that there will be a sequel.

He moved into the period drama as well this year as he took on the role of Edward Rochester as the novel Jane Eyre was adapted for the big screen once again.

There is just something so captivating about Fassbender in this role that I have never seen from an actor playing Rochester before.

This really is a stunning adaptation as Fassbender and Mia Wasikowska work together beautifully - it really is a very genuine relationship that you see on screen.

And while we are heaping praise on Fassbender for his work in 2011 it seems like we will be doing more of the same at the end of 2012.

The new year looks set to belong to the actor with three movies in the pipeline including Haywire and A Dangerous Method.

However it is Shame that everyone is talking about as Fassbender has already picked up a Best Actor gong at the Venice Film Festival for his central performance in the movie.

Shame sees him reunite with filmmaker Steve McQueen and it could see him pick up his first Best Actor Oscar nomination.

It’s back to the blockbuster this summer with Prometheus, which is directed by Ridley Scott and also stars Charlize Theron and Noomi Rapace.
