Benedict Cumberbatch stars as crazed royal in trailer for The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses

Benedict Cumberbatch takes centre stage in the latest instalment of BBC Shakespeare series The Hollow Crown.

Titled The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses, Benedict will star alongside Dame Judi Dench, Hugh Bonneville and Sophie Okonedo.

The Sherlock star will be leading the cast as Richard III in the show as the UK celebrates Shakespeare's 800th birthday.


The story will follow Richard III's descent into madness and tracks his life from childhood.

Writer Dominic Cook, while talking to The Express, said of the king, “He’s quite monstrous, he ends up murdering children in the plays. He’s a psychopath. There’s no two ways about it: he’s a psychopath.

“But why did he become like that? There’s a story that leads up to that."

He later added: “There are some incidents he witnesses as a child that are horrific and contribute to him becoming a human being who is not able to empathise with other human beings.”

This new collection will be sure to delight Sherlock fans as Benedict, 39, reunites with Andrew Scott — who plays nemesis Moriarty on the hit BBC show.

Andrew Scott joins Benedict Cumberbatch in The Hollow Crown

The Moriarty actor will play King Louis in the channel's upcoming adaptations of Shakespeare's Henry VI and Richard III, which star Benedict Cumberbatch as Richard III.

Also newly confirmed for the cast are Michael Gambon as Mortimer, Philip Glenister as Talbot, Adrian Dunbar as Plantagenet and Ben Daniels as Buckingham.

They are joined by previously-announced actors Judi Dench, Sophie Okonedo, Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Keeley Hawes and Tom Sturridge.

BBC Two is working on three films as part of this second Hollow Crown series of Shakespeare's historical plays: Richard III and Henry VI in two parts.

Dominic Cooke directs all three films, Ben Power has adapted the plays for the screen and Rupert Ryle-Hodges will produce.

Benedict Cumberbatch's Character To Be More 'Human' In New Season; Moriarty's Comeback Confirmed By Executive Producers!

The cat is out of bag about the fate of Sherlock Holmes' famous villain.

The popular BBC detective series co-creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss spoke in a Royal Television Society's event last week and confirmed that Jim Moriarty is set to return in Season 4, as reported by Hollywood Reporter.

The so-called "consulting criminal" played by Andrew Scott shot himself to death in Episode 3 of the series' Season 2. It is unknown though what theory are they going to use to disclaim his alleged suicide. Gatiss and Moffat admitted that the "did you miss me" scene in Season 3 was not a last minute addition as they "had long planned the twist."

The producers also revealed everything is already figured out about "what will happen in the next season," though these plans will "get more detailed" as the production deadline draws closer, Hollywood Reporter said. The future of the show lies on the availability of the lead characters as both Star Trek: Into Darkness star Benedict Cumberbatch and The Hobbit actor Martin Freeman are busy with other film projects.

"There was suddenly a kind of outraged response that it might not be back until 2016 but that's precisely how long it always is. It's always two years! But we'd like to return soon, of course," Mark Gatiss, who also plays Sherlock's old brother Mycroft Holmes, told Metro.

What's it like to kiss Sherlock Holmes? One woman can tell you.

Yasmine Akram, the actor lucky enough to have been cast as Sherlock's girlfriend Janine, says kissing Benedict Cumberbatch in the final episode of Sherlock was an absolute delight. “It was lovely and very soft,” she told RadioTimes.com, adding that it would be top of her list of things to do with her afternoon.

His Last Vowdraws to a close the third series of BBC1's colossal hit Sherlock, written by Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss, and Stephen Thompson. It sees Sherlock face the man he despises more than any other: the merciless newspaper baron (and “Napoleon of blackmail”) Charles Augustus Magnussen, played by The Killing's imperious Lars Mikkelsen. It also ends with what looks very much like the imminent resurrection of Moriarty, believed to have died at the end of series two (Moffat may be going back on his words: “He shoots himself in the brains. You don't come back from that”).

The first shock viewers will experience, however, is the early addition of a girlfriend for Sherlock, with whom he shares a bath and other cosy domestic moments. Girlfriends, says Sherlock in the first series, are “not really my area”. It is distinctly unsettling to see the detective being cute and cuddly with another human being.

Akram says the steamy scenes with Cumberbatch were “bound to put a few noses out of joint” and that she would probably be the envy of a great number of fans: “Those first 20 minutes, half an hour, people are going to be like 'Whaaaat!?'”

She says that although the kissing scene came at the end of a shoot that lasted about five hours, there would have been nobody better to kiss than Cumberbatch: “It was absolutely lovely”. She also explains that her performance would not have been as good without Cumberbatch as a co-star: “He doesn't intimidate you; he was just very kind and generous.”

Elementary season 2 - Jonny Lee Miller's Sherlock Holmes confirmed for Sky Living this autumn (RADIO TIMES)

US Sherlock Holmes update Elementary will be back on British screens this autumn on Sky Living, RadioTimes.com can confirm.

The show, starring Jonny Lee Miller as the eccentric detective, returns to US network CBS for a second series on September 26, and is expected to come to Sky around a fortnight later, pointing to an air date of mid-October.

The modern-day American take on the Sherlock Holmes stories is the highest rating show in Sky Living’s 20-year history, averaging 1.12 million viewers per episode.

The series co-stars Lucy Liu as Holmes’s female partner Dr Joan Watson and ended last month with the revelation that his former lover Irene Adler, played by Game of Thrones star Natalie Dormer, was also his arch-nemesis Moriarty.

We learnt back in April that Game of Thrones star Natalie Dormer was set to play Sherlock Holmes's former lover Irene Adler in US update Elementary. And earlier this month we were told that the season finale would see Jonny Lee Miller's detective face a showdown with arch-enemy Moriarty, the man he believed had killed Irene. Then, just last week, UK viewers discovered Irene's secret – that she's not dead after all.

But now (right now, if you're still reading this) as the series approaches the climax to its first season, there's one more major twist still to come...

...Irene Adler is Moriarty!

Dormer's character will be unveiled as the brilliant criminal nemesis when she shoots one of her own henchmen in order to save Holmes's life.

It finally happened. Twelve episodes into CBS’ modern day Sherlock Holmes series Elementary, Moriarty appears. Well, almost.

Elementary doesn’t follow the literary character’s trajectory as closely as another updated version, the BBC’s Sherlock. But it would be hard to imagine a Holmes who doesn’t face Moriarty — his greatest foe from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s novels. Many recent adaptions of Sherlock Holmes — including the aforementioned BBC show, and the Robert Downey Jr. movies — use Moriarty as the big bad. So it felt like only a matter of time before Elementary went down that path.

In the latest hour, titled “M,” Sherlock (Jonny Lee Miller) hunts down a serial killer named M, who murdered Sherlock’s beloved Irene Adler during a London killing spree. The detective/consultant was heavily involved in M’s pursuit when he worked with Scotland Yard, and now M, like Sherlock, has made his way across the pond.

Martin Clunes jockeys for Downton position (THE SUN)

MARTIN CLUNES is threatening to ride on to the Downton Abbey set – after pal and show creator Julian Fellowes failed to call him up for a spell in front of the cameras.

The keen equestrian and Doc Martin star revealed he plans to bully his way into the period drama by arriving on a steed.

Horsing around, Martin said: “Julian is my neighbour. He lives just around the corner and I keep lobbying him but he won’t. I might just ride into an episode out of spite.

“He knows where I am and what my measurements are, so it wouldn’t be difficult.”

Sherlock star shooting Dublin comedy (RTE)

Sherlock star Andrew Scott has joined Amy Huberman, Hugh O'Conor, Brian Gleeson and Peter McDonald in the new comedy The Stag, which begins shooting in Dublin next week.

IFTN reports that the film, co-written by McDonald and director John Butler, follows a group of friends on a stag party, with Dubliner Scott playing the best man.

Huberman plays the bride-to-be and the cast also includes Michael Legge and Andrew Bennett.
