Last year marked the 100th anniversary of the ruthless assassination of the Tsar Nicholas, his wife Alexandra, and their five children; Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia, and Alexei by communist agitators in 1918.

Netflix's six-part series The Last Czars delves into the fascinating history of the dynastic family and their devastating downfall during the social upheaval that swept across Russia in the early 20th century. The Russian revolution abruptly and violently ended the Romanov family's reign of the imperial throne after a 300-year rule.

After abdicating from the throne in the wake of the February Revolution of 1917, Nicholas and his family were imprisoned in the Russian town of Tobolsk. A year later, they were transferred to the local Ural Soviet council in the city of Yekaterinburg, and on the night of July 17, the family were executed by their Bolshevik guards.

Colin Firth Kursk disaster movie delayed by Russian defence ministry

The filming of Colin Firth’s forthcoming disaster movie Kursk has been delayed after the Russian defence ministry failed to provide a permit on time.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Thomas Vinterberg-directed submarine drama was planned to begin shooting start next month but the review process has taken longer than expected.

“We haven’t yet received a permit from the defence ministry,” producer Andrei Sigle told local radio station Radio Baltika. “They probably have other things to take care of.”

Rather than move production to another country, such as Norway, Sigle aims to wait for a green light from the Russian government, who had initially promised cooperation. There have been suggestions that the defence ministry grew concerned over giving the crew access to classified locations and information.

Matthew Macfadyen lines up for Ben Hopkins’ Epic 11 January, 2013 | By Wendy Mitchell (SCREEN DAILY)

EXCLUSIVE: The UK-Germany-Russia-Georgia co-production starts shooting in Georgia’s capital Tbilisi on Sunday, at the Georgian Film Studios.

The cast is led by Matthew Macfadyen, Myanna Buring and Noah Taylor. Casting was by Wildman Hall.

Director Ben Hopkins wrote the script alongside BAFTA winner Pawel Pawlikowski.

The story is described as a “gentle black comedy” about a washed-up Oscar winning British film director, named Emil Forester (played by Macfadyen), who gets invited to make a national epic in an obscure Caucasus Republic called Karastan.

Paul McCartney and the band are back in England for the final two shows of the On the Run Tour. But the show in Moscow on Dec. 14 at the Olympinski Arena last week was memorable for guitarist Rusty Anderson.

"Twas a great night overall. "Fantastic crowd, great vibes," he told us by email.

During the trip to Russia, fans presented McCartney and the band with nesting dolls of each band member. (You can see pictures of all the dolls here.

"I was blown away! Not expecting that at all," he told us "Whoever painted them did a great job."

The dolls were presented to McCartney and the band before the show by Beatles.ru, a group of Russian Beatles fans. The set of dolls was designed by Russian painter Gregory Don.

­Russians want Delight from McCartney

Anticipating Sir Paul McCartney’s gig in the Russian capital, fans of the ex- Beatle addressed the singer through a fan website with a request to include the rather unpopular Monkberry Moon Delight song into the show program.

The address published on Beatles.ru says the choice was made according to polls held on this site and on social networks. It looks like this track from the Ram album by Paul and Linda McCartney, released in 1971, really has something that turns Russians on.

However the authors of the request believe that their choice may srprise the singer. Monkberry Moon Delight is definitely not among the golden hits produced by McCartney and has seldom been heard at concerts. 

“In the 1970s, Monkberry Moon Delight, illegally released on vinyl and heard thousands of times on tape, actually became your first solo hit in the USSR, and yet hasn’t lost this status,” the fans’ message says.

People were offered to choose one song out of 40 compositions, which are not listed for McCartney’s On the Run tour.
