Henry Cavill new James Bond: Superman actor being groomed as the next 007?

CHRISTIAN TODAY
Snooky Grawls 27 June 2015

It is that time once again for Ian Fleming's James Bond character where the search for a new actor to play 007 is up in the air.

Daniel Craig is the current one portraying the British Super Spy and word around is that the one likely to succeed him is Henry Cavill.

Should Cavill indeed be blessed of taking over from Craig, it will mark the first time that an actor with high regard would be chosen to play the role.

Previous actors who took on the role of 007 were virtual unknowns. In fact, portraying James Bond was seen as a springboard for their career.

Among the actors who previously played James Bond include Sean Connery, David Niven, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Craig.

So will Cavill be up to the task?

For the record, Cavill had auditioned for the role before. This was back in 2005 when he tried out together with Daniel Craig. At that time, producers felt he was too young for the role (he was only 22 years old at the time) so Craig eventually got the part.

After 10 years and Cavill having a following of his own, all that has changed. He has the age and most importantly the looks that James Bond had always been associated with, a lady's man if you will.

So does this make him a shoe-in to be the next 007?

While that remains up in the air, Cavill is set to debut in another remake – The Man from U.N.C.L.E which is set to debut this coming August. The upcoming film may somehow help critics if Cavill is fit to be the next James Bond, being a spy-themed movie.

Roger Moore wants Doctor Who or Sherlock role (XPOSE)

Sir Roger Moore wants a role in 'Doctor Who' or 'Sherlock'.

The James Bond hero - who played secret agent 007 for seven films between 1973 and 1985 - revealed his desire over Twitter, striking up a conversation with 'Sherlock' creator and 'Doctor Who' scribe Mark Gatiss, who appeared keen to make his wish come true.

Mark wrote on the social networking site: ''Isn't Roger Moore wonderful in 'The Man Who Haunted Himself'? I have such a soft spot for the film. (sic)''

Roger joked: ''@Markgatiss thank you. I might be equally wonderful in Dr Who or Sherlock if asked! (sic)''
An overexcited Mark quickly replied: ''My life is complete! Will be in touch. My Dad was once mistaken for you by two old ladies in Whitley Bay! (sic)''

Fans were also enthusiastic about Roger's suggestion, with most preferring the idea of the 85-year-old actor making a cameo appearance in drama 'Sherlock' alongside Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch.

One tweeted: ''history in the making (please make it Sherlock..I don't watch DW) (sic)''

James Bond actors: 50 years of shaking and stirring (PHOTOS) From Sean Connery to Daniel Craig, six actors have said, "Bond, James Bond." (GLOBAL POST)

David Trifunov
October 3, 2012 01:27

Sean Connery set the bar impossibly high when, on October 5, 1962, he debuted as British super spy James Bond in Dr. No.

It was actually the sixth Bond novel as penned by Ian Fleming and featured a villain with metal claws instead of hands and a beautiful, sheltered beach orphan named Honey Ryder.

Actress Ursula Andress did a number on the Bond girl legend, herself, but that's a topic for another day (and a much longer slideshow).

Come to think of it, Bernard Lee cuts an impressive figure as the film's title character, the moon-rocket destroying Dr. No.

Given the running start these three actors gave the franchise, the fact Daniel Craig will appear in the 23rd Bond movie half-a-century later shouldn't be a surprise.

Daniel Craig 'looks like he could kill a man' says James Bond co-star Dame Judi Dench (THE TELEGRAPH)

Dame Judi, who plays spymaster M in the film franchise, said Craig was "quite intense" and "fantastic at doing action".

She said that while he retained some of the humour essential to the part, he was a "James Bond for today".
"I also think he feels like a Bond who could kill a man," Dame Judi told November's issue of GQ magazine.
"That was a conscious decision, really, in the same way that you don't talk about Bond girls any more, you talk about Bond women. It's moving with the times."

Craig has been seen as a more menacing version of 007 after the clonking double entendres of earlier films exemplified by the eyebrow-arching Roger Moore.

"He’s very focused on set, very focused indeed. And he’s quite intense. But, as I say, quite funny too, so the tension is never so much that it affects another person.

"Of course, Daniel is fantastic at doing action. When I see so many of the stunts he does, I say, 'You can’t have done that!' And he’ll say, “Yes, I did.” He’s very impressive.

'Sherlock': Is Benedict Cumberbatch the best Holmes? [Poll] By Liz Kelly Nelson May 3, 2012 4:17 PM ET (zap 2 it)

Since Sir Arthur Conan Doyle penned his popular tales of amateur sleuth Sherlock Holmes in 1887, he's captured the imagination of readers. And filmmakers/TV execs anxious to translate the astute detective's annoying charm to the screen. With Sunday's (May 6) debut of "Sherlock" Season 2 on PBS, the clamor for Benedict Cumberbatch's Holmes is growing into a frenzy.

But all the buzz has Zap2it wondering -- is Cumberbatch the best Holmes ever?

The truth is the character is so appealing, there's plenty of room for concurrent Holmes projects. In addition to Cumberbatch, Holmes is also played on the big screen by Robert Downey Jr. in a pair of blockbuster Guy Ritchie movies. And though both are loved, they couldn't be more different.

In fact, the most popular Sherlocks over the years -- Cumberbatch, Downey and the nosy (What? He's a detective) Basil Rathbone each took a markedly different approach to the character. Rathbone's Holmes was cold, aloof and unerring. He also sported what became the shorthand for the legendary detective -- a tweed deerstalker cap and matching coat.

Maggie Smith's Dowager Countess was evidently a Bond Girl - Roger Moore is joining Downton Abbey (Express.co)

ROGER MOORE COULD BE JOINING DOWNTON ABBEY CAST

Saturday January 21,2012

By Lizzie Catt with Lisa Higgins and Jack Teague

Programme insiders say it is hoped Sir Roger, 84, will appear in the third series later this year as a potential love interest for Dame Maggie Smith’s character Violet Crawley.

“Sir Roger is considered the perfect choice and his involvement would obviously go down very well with fans of the show,” we’re told.

“He would represent an exciting part of Violet’s past. Hopefully Sir Roger will be able to fit it into his schedule.”

It has emerged that fellow national treasure Joan Collins, 78, is being lined up for a role in the next series and she has announced that she would be happy to join the cast, while the recent Christmas edition saw Nigel Havers appear as the caddish Lord Hepworth.

New Thrillers and James Bond to Watch This Holiday Season (Huffington Post)

Posted: 12/25/11 07:52 PM ET

Exotic locations, fast cars, beautiful women, and crazy gadgets are the excitements in today's cinematic thrillers -- whether they be spy-oriented, crime adventure, or a suspense mystery.

And with such films as Sherlock Holmes - A Game of Shadows, Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol, The Adventures of Tin Tin, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, and Tinker Tailor, Soldier Spy (all which opened this weekend or very recently), there's a good chance of catching one variation or another of the genre.

Of this bunch, all pretty much satisfy the basic strictures of these spy/cop/crime dramas -- good guys, skillful associates (at least one of them has to be an attractive, sexy woman -- or, in Tin Tin's case, a cute dog) nasty villains, wealthy magnates, fancy moves and incredible weaponry. Only Tinker Tailor is more of an arthouse production with more talk and little action.

Among these four, the Brad Bird-directed Mission Impossible best hits the genre's high points with the most balanced results. Between its smart use of humor (with the comic Simon Pegg as one of the IMF's skilled team), Tom Cruise's gymnastic moves and Paula Patton's sultry turns, the film's story pulses forward.

Though the digitally animated Tin Tin reigns as the latest advance in performance-capture, it also serves as a successor to director Steven Spielberg's love affair with adventure films seen through such series as the Indiana Jones tales -- and terrier Snowy makes for a much smarter, cuter sidekick than Shia LeBouf. In Tin Tin's case, this series has lots more gas in its narrative engine than the now-tired Indie Jones saga.

Both Sherlock Holmes and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo deal with bloodthirsty villains -- one who kills for perverse greed, the other for sadistic passions -- and present convoluted stories that come to uncertain conclusions. While they each offer slick, visually stimulating sequences of death and destruction, one seems a sleekly-made yet unnecessary remake (Dragon) and the other an almost too-peculiar re-imagining (Holmes).

Drawing on author John Le Carre's cerebral novel, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy investigates the secret agent landscape as an intellectual exercise. In director Tomas Alfredson's version, this story of spymaster George Smiley ferreting out a mole in the British espionage bureaucracy tries to recreate the novel's complex machinations, but it spurs more confusion than insight.

And all of these films have roots in a raft of source material, but the granddaddy of it all is the James Bond series, longest running franchise in film history.

Some of the series' cinematic excursions ranged far afield from Ian Fleming's original novels where the world's most suave, savvy spy was actually a lot grittier and more of a cold, ruthless operator.
While the filmic Bond increasingly relied on fancy gadgets to enhance the drama -- especially after the character became far more of coy caricature during the Roger Moore years -- it still influenced a crop of sometimes superior imitators. And now the character has returned to a harder edge through actor Daniel Craig's recent re-invention.

Normally the Bond films can only be viewed on various DVD and Blu-ray sets but they have been viewable all this month on Epix -- the premium entertainment service available on television, video-on-demand, online and on consumer electronic devices.

And they dovetail into today's marathon of Bond movies. So if you still hunger for the original thrills set in play through James, the following are viewable: Goldfinger (3:45 pm ET), Thunderball (5:45 pm ET), Live and Let Die (8 pm ET), and You Only Live Twice (10 pm).

Daniel Craig: James Bond Five More Times? (Huffington Post)

Bond Craig
First Posted: 12/19/11 07:23 AM ET Updated: 12/19/11 10:03 AM ET

Looks like the current 007 could soon become 008.

Daniel Craig is in the midst of filming "Skyfall," his third outing as the iconic British agent James Bond, and if the franchise's producer has his way, Craig will shoot five more 007 films beyond this one. That would put the star at eight total Bond films -- one more than Roger Moore, whose seven turns as the spy are the most ever.

"Filming has gone very well so far and I'd love Daniel to surpass Roger's record and do eight pictures," Michael G. Wilson told the UK's Sunday People. "Daniel's been an absolute pleasure to be around because he takes the role so seriously. There's really no one more passionate about making these films work than him - he's a filmmaker's dream."

Craig's first turn as James Bond, 2006's "Casino Royale," was critically acclaimed and made nearly $600 million in global box office. The 2008 followup, "Quantum of Solace," was less universally praised but nearly hit $600 million in sales, as well. "Skyfall," due out in 2012, is being directed by Oscar-winner Sam Mendes and is being eagerly anticipated by 007 fans. The 23rd film in the official Bond canon will be released during the 50th anniversary of the film franchise.

Asked at the film's announcement press conference in November about fears of being typecast as an action spy, Craig said, "Look, I like to work. All I know is doing a third one [Bond film], and being given the chance to do a third, means I just want to make the best possible Bond film ever. I want it to be Bond with a capital B."

Craig will appear this week in the American adaptation of "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo," in which he plays a journalist with similar investigative rigor as Bond -- but a lot less physical power.
Sean Connery played James Bond a total of six times, depending on adherence to official canon, some say he was in seven as well, thanks to the independent "Never Say Never Again." Timothy Dalton had the part in two films and Pierce Brosnan, who preceded Craig, played Bond four times. George Lazenby played Bond once, following Connery's brief retirement from the role.

Churchill named the greatest English gentleman of last century (Colin Firth is #5)

New Delhi, Sat, 10 Dec 2011NI Wire

Churchill named the greatest English gentleman of last century
Sir Winston Churchill has been named the greatest British gentleman of the last century in a recent poll conducted in England. The British conservative politician (and two-time prime minister) has been widely regarded as one of the most influential people in the history.

With his statesmanship, Churchill, who was also a historian and a writer, inspired the whole Kingdom to stand in defiance of Hitler during World War II. The new poll – held by Austin Reed to uncover the greatest gentlemen in modern memory – counted votes of as many as 4,000 people.

He is also the only British Prime Minister to have received the Noble Prize in Literature. "Sir Winston Churchill showed unprecedented courage and strength to lead this country and is a worthy choice as the greatest British gentleman," the Daily Mail quoted a spokesman for Austin Reed as saying.

The second name in this list of top Britons came with the best-known natural history filmmaker Sir David Attenborough. With several popular BBC series, including programs like Life on Earth (1979), The Living Planet (1984), The Trials of Life (1990), The Private Life of Plants (1995), The Life of Birds (1998), The Life of Mammals (2002), Life in the Undergrowth (2005) and the Life in Cold Blood (2008), he brought the hidden secrets of the world to living rooms across the country.

British actor, comedian and TV presenter Stephen Fry came in the third place in the poll. His sheer intelligent and amusing contributions to TV screens and Twitter feeds have certainly made him a national treasure.

Among others in the Greatest British Gentleman poll, Prince William took the fourth place followed by the Oscar winning actor Colin Firth (for the movie The King’s Speech) while actor David Niven took the sixth spot. Former Bond star Roger Moore and actor Michael Caine came in the seventh and eighth place respectively.

Here is the top 10:

  1. Sir Winston Churchill
  2. Sir David Attenborough
  3. Stephen Fry
  4. Prince William
  5. Colin Firth
  6. David Niven
  7. Roger Moore
  8. Michael Caine
  9. David Beckham
  10. Bruce Forsyth

Sir Roger Moore - Roger Moore Backs Animal-Cosmetics Ban - YAY ROGER MOORE!!! It's about time we stop this!

Roger Moore Backs Animal-Cosmetics Ban

Sir Roger Moore and Brigitte Bardot are the latest in a string of names to back a campaign to end the sale of products tested on animals.
Sir Roger Moore and Brigitte Bardot have become the latest starts to back a campaign against cosmetics tested on animals.
The screen legends join 89,000 people - including Ricky Gervais, Dame Judi Dench, Leona Lewis and Melanie C - in signing Humane Society International's CrueltyFree2013 petition to urge European Union (EU) politicians to keep a promise banning the sale of new cosmetics tested on animals.
In 2009, the EU banned animal testing in its own labs but it is still legal to sell products imported from other countries, and while they are due to be banned in March 2013, there has been speculation this will be delayed indefinitely.
Roger said: "It seems absurd to me that Europe still allows animal-tested cosmetics to be sold in its shops when such animal testing is itself quite rightly banned in its laboratories. If something is unethical, it is unethical full-stop regardless of where in the world it takes place. So I say to EU politicians, stop supporting cosmetics animal testing in other countries by selling these products. You promised to ban them, and a gentleman's word is his bond."
Brigitte added: "We do not have the right to poison then kill animals, sensitive beings, for some beauty creams. It is urgent to equip the European Union with reliable, modern and non-cruel research, by definitively abolishing animal testing which is a cruelty without name."
