Benedict Cumberbatch, Eddie Redmayne and Rosamund Pike are amongst the British nominations at the 2015 Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Benedict, 38, is in the running for honours in both the TV and movie categories, and will contest for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries for his performance in Sherlock and Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for his turn in The Imitation Game.

The delighted actor said: 'I'm over the moon. And so delighted to receive recognition in such esteemed company for both Sherlock and The Imitation Game by my acting peers. What an amazing early Christmas present! Thank you to all who voted and watched both pieces of work.'

But the actor faces stern competition in the form of Eddie Redmayne, 32, whose incredible performance as Professor Stephen Hawking in The Theory Of Everything has prompted talk of Oscar and BAFTA nominations.

His British co-star Felicity Jones has also been nominated for her role as Hawking's devoted first wife, Jane in the Category for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role.

She will battle it out with Jennifer Aniston (for Cake), Julienne Moore (for Still Alice), Reese Witherspoon (for Wild) and Rosamund Pike, whose performance in a Hollywood adaptation of bestselling novel Gone Girl has won her rave reviews.

Keira Knightley has been nominated for two gongs, including Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in The Imitation Game.

Dame Maggie Smith, Brits Lead Field at the 2012 SAG Awards Posted on Wednesday, December 12th, 2012 (BBC AMERICA)

By Fraser McAlpine

Dame Maggie Smith in ‘Downton Abbey’

The nominations have just be announced for the Screen Actor’s Guild awards, 2012, and it is fair to say that the Brits have done a very nice job. So much so that only two awards are unblessed by British influence, and Dame Maggie Smith may well end the night on the phone to a carpenter, to build her a bigger sideboard.

Let’s go through the nominees, and point at the Brits in the list. The full list is here:

In the motion picture collection of awards, we’ve got Daniel Day-Lewis (nominated for Lincoln) battling it out with Bradley Cooper, Denzel Washington, John Hawke and Hugh Jackman for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role. Meanwhile Dame Helen Mirren (Hitchcock) and Naomi Watts (The Impossible) are up against Jessica Chastain, Marion Cotillard, and Jennifer Lawrence for the female equivalent.

Over on the supporting actor lists, Skyfall is represented by Javier Bardem (he only has to beat Alan Arkin, Robert De Niro, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Tommy Lee Jones, how hard can that be?) and Maggie Smith is up for her first award, for The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, a movie which is also nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, alongside Les Misérables (some good Brits in there), Lincoln (ditto), and Silver Linings Playbook (nope.).

Skyfall also gets a nod in the Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Team category, although its TV equivalent appears to have ignored any British shows, including Doctor Who, and (perhaps unkindest of all) the all-action Downton Abbey. It’s an outrage!

In the TV section, Clive Owen is nominated for the TV Movie Male Actor gong, for his portrayal of Ernest Hemingway in HBO’s Hemingway and Gellhorn. Charlotte Rampling takes up the British flag in the Female Actor section, after getting a nomination for her role in Restless.

The casts of “Breaking Bad” and “The Good Wife” will compete for best dramatic ensemble at the Screen Actors Guild Awards next month.
They are going against the casts from “Boardwalk Empire,” “Game of Thrones” and “Dexter.”
The SAG Awards will be presented at 8 p.m. ET Jan. 29 on TBS and TNT.

The comedy ensemble nominees are the casts from “Modern Family,” “The Big Bang Theory,” “30 Rock,” “Glee” and “The Office.”

Nominees for top comedy actress are Betty White of “Hot in Cleveland,” Edie Falco of “Nurse Jackie,” Tina Fey of “30 Rock,” and Julie Bowen and Sofia Vergara, both of “Modern Family.”
Nominees for top comedy actor are Jon Cryer of “Two and a Half Men,” Alec Baldwin of “30 Rock,” Steve Carell of “The Office,” and Ty Burrell and Eric Stonestreet, both of “Modern Family.”

The choices for top dramatic actress are Julianna Margulies of “The Good Wife,” Glenn Close of “Damages,” Kyra Sedgwick of “The Closer,” Kathy Bates of “Harry’s Law” and Jessica Lange of “American Horror Story.”

The selections for top dramatic actor are Kyle Chandler of “Friday Night Lights,” Bryan Cranston of “Breaking Bad,” Steve Buscemi of “Boardwalk Empire,” Michael C. Hall of “Dexter” and Patrick J. Adams of “Suits.”

The big surprise is that “Homeland,” the new Showtime drama that drew rave reviews, didn’t gain any attention.

Betty White is also a nominee for top actress in a TV movie for “The Lost Valentine” from ”Hallmark Hall of Fame.” She will face Maggie Smith of “Downton Abbey,” Kate Winslet of “Mildred Pierce,” Emily Watson of “Appropriate Adult” and Diane Lane of “Cinema Verite.” Smith and Winslet were both winners at the Emmys.

The nominees for top actor in a TV movie are Laurence Fishburne of “Thurgood,” Greg Kinnear of “The Kennedys,” Guy Pearce of “Mildred Pierce” and Paul Giamatti and James Woods of “Too Big to Fail.”

The probable winners? The casts for “Breaking Bad” and “Modern Family,” Bowen and Burrell of “Modern Family,” Cranston, Margulies, Smith and Giamatti.

What do you think?
