Benedict Cumberbatch to play The Master By Anthony Lund on 04/07/2012 / (MUSIC ROOMS)

Along with the Daleks, there is one Doctor Who villain who has time and time again returned to face off against the Time Lord in a battle for supremacy – The Master.

Last played by John Simm during David Tennant’s turn as the Doctor, The Master has been a constant quandary for the Doctor, who has swayed continuously from wanting to help him to needing to defeat him.
Now, if the latest rumours are to be believed, The Master could be about to return for the 50th Anniversary of the show in 2013, and who could deny that it would be something of the perfect showdown.

Benedict Cumberbatch, Matt Smith: Moffat on Master Rumours, Story Arc (DOCTOR WHO)

In all the excitement yesterday we missed this other little Steven Moffat interview from the Radio Times.

First, Moffat was quizzed about the rumours suggesting that Benedict Cumberbatch is being lined up to play the Master. “People really do sit in rooms and make that stuff up,” he said.

“Look at the filming schedules for Doctor Who and Sherlock – those two shows tend to shoot at the same time. We’d have a problem and there’s only so much I can arrange.” But as usual, he didn’t rule it out either adding: “But who knows what could happen in the future…”

Moffat also spoke a little more on how big the story arc for Series 7 will be this time: “This time we’re moving closer to stand-alone stories. At this point, we’re not planning any two-parters. So, every week is going to be like a different mad movie.”

Benedict Cumberbatch: THE DOCTOR WHO COLUMN: THE MASTER A CHALLENGE FOR CUMBERBATCH? (SHADOWLOCKED)

Wednesday, 07 March 2012 00:05 | by John Bensalhia

The papers love this. When it comes to second-guessing who's going to appear in the next series of Doctor Who, they're like kids rushing up to queue at the ice cream van. The slightest scrap of speculation and the reporters are in for the kill, printing big, blockbusting headlines so bold that even a myopic pensioner would flinch.

When it comes to the big guns of Doctor Who, the papers love to create a stir of speculation. We've had Penelope Wilton somehow coming back as a Harriet Jones Dalek, thereby torpedoing the credibilities of both if it had happened; countless names suggested for the next Doctor (blimey, give Mr Smith a chance), and now, inevitably, Sherlock himself has been touted as the very next Master.

Yes, Benedict Cumberbatch, currently best known as brainbox sleuth Sherlock, is “reportedly” in line to be the next Master. Whether or not this is true is anyone's guess. I suppose we had all this the last time when John Simm was reported to play the evil Time Lord genius.

Initially the rumour was downplayed, and then – guess what? Turned out to be true! So maybe the pattern will be repeated. Or maybe it could all be a great big double bluff. But if they do choose Cumberbatch, well they couldn't have picked anyone better – especially bearing in mind how past Master actors have tended to be the mirror image of the Doctor that they were playing against.

Anna Karenina, The Great Gatsby: On list for (likely) Best Picture 2012 (HOLLYWOOD ELSEWHERE)

On January 1st I presented a list of the likeliest leading Best Picture contenders for 2012. Today Rope of Silicon's Brad Brevet came up with a list of 25 potential Best Picture contenders. I'm using his list to refine mine and to separate the highly favored or half-likelies from the outright kills.

HOLLYWOOD ELSEWHERE 2013 BEST PICTURE FINALISTS (for now):

1. Lincoln (mid to late December), d: Steven Spielberg, cast: Daniel Day Lewis, Sally Field, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tommy Lee Jones. Why: The usual Spielberg-kowtow instinct (i.e., to show obeisance before power) plus the impact of Daniel Day Lewis's lead performance plus the instinct to show respect and allegiance for the legend of Abraham Lincoln. Classic historical chops. Will Spielberg try to hold back on his usual instincts? He may, I think, because of the Lewis influence.

2. The Master, d: Paul Thomas Anderson; cast: Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Laura Dern. Why: This project has felt chilly from the get-go, but if it's halfway focused and well-shaped it'll offer a chance for Hollywood to deliver a big "eff you" to Scientology, which, we've all been told, The Master is absolutely not about. Plus it's hard to imagine Hoffman's L. Ron...sorry, charismatic leader performance not emerging as a Best Actor standout.

3. The Great Gatsby (12.25), d: Baz Luhrman, cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton, Carey Mulligan, Isla Fisher. Why: The usual instinct to honor an adaptation of a classic novel. As long as Luhrman doesn't screw it up, that is, by going all crazy and wackjobby like he did on Australia.

4. This is Forty (12.21), d: Judd Apatow. Why: Apatow has been getting better and better. One of these years he;s going to hit a long triple or a homer. Cast: Paul Rudd, Leslie Mann, Megan Fox, Melissa McCarthy, Albert Brooks, Ryan Lee, John Lithgow and Charlyne Yi.

5. The Silver Linings Playbook (11.21), d: David O. Russell, cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro, Jacki Weaver, Chris Tucker, Julia Stiles. Why: No clue, but Russell always delivers so I'm guessing/presuming here.

6. Gravity (11.21), d: Alfonso Cuaron; cast: Sandra Bullock, George Clooney. Why: The technical audacity of this film alone, described by Clooney as sort of 2001-ish, will surely attract respect and huzzahs.

7. Les Miserables (12.7), d: Tom Hooper, cast: Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway. Why: Classic musical in grand sweeping historical tradition plus direction by Hooper (The King's Speech) plus Crowe, Jackman, etc. And Hathaway finally sings.

 8. Anna Karenina (November/early December), d: Joe Wright., w: Tom Stoppard. Cast: Keira Knightley.

Benedict Cumberbatch: Matt Smith plays down Benedict Cumberbatch 'Doctor Who' rumours

It had been reported that the 'Sherlock' star was in line to play The Master

Matt Smith has claimed to have no knowledge about rumours Benedict Cumberbatch is in line to play The Master in Doctor Who.

It was reported by the Express this week that the Sherlock star had been approached to play the evil Timelord nemesis for the sci-fi show’s 50th anniversary next year. But now Smith, who plays the current incarnation of the Doctor, has denied knowing anything about the claims.

However, he did not deny the casting completely. He told Daybreak: "I know Ben and I've not heard anything about it. But he's a wonderful actor and a mate." He appeared to then play down any rumours: "I think he’s a bit busy being a Star Trek villain, and he's Sherlock Holmes of course, so he's a busy man."

Benedict Cumberbatch: Yet more from Mr Cumberbatch… (THE ONE RING)

February 29th, 2012 by greendragon

The initials BC must stand for ‘Busy Chap’.

Benedict Cumberbatch is set to become the darling of geeks everywhere (if he isn’t already); not content with being the star of Sherlock, with a lead part in the next Star Trek movie, and with not one but TWO roles in The Hobbit movies, rumours abound that Cumberbatch will be the next incarnation of The Doctor’s greatest nemesis, The Master.

According to this report, Britain’s Daily Express tabloid newspaper ran an article stating, ‘It’s fitting that the Doctor comes face to face with his ultimate enemy The Master for the 50th anniversary and it’s felt Benedict is the perfect choice if schedules can work.’

Benedict Cumberbatch To Be The Master In ‘Doctor Who’? (GEEKS OF DOOM)

Posted by cGt2099

It seems that as soon as filming hits the ground for Doctor Who that the gossip floodgates open for the series. I’ve heard some doozies in my time, but this one (if real) would actually be quite interesting. Express.co.uk and Radio Times are reporting of rumors that Benedict Cumberbatch from Sherlock (and the forthcoming Star Trek 2 and The Hobbit) could have landed the role as The Master for the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who.

Because Cumberbatch is celebrated for his Holmes role in “that other” Steven Moffat series, his name has popped up in the past as potentially appearing on Doctor Who.
