HENRY CAVILL: “Man of Steel” Is Powerful at the Box Office, Hitting the Half-Billion Dollar Mark The Film Has Earned More Than $500 Million Worldwide, With Some Major International Markets Still to Open (E ON BUSINESS)

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--After flying into the record books in its opening, Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ “Man of Steel” continues to soar at the box office. The film crossed the $500 million mark on Saturday, June 29. The announcement was made today by Warner Bros. Pictures President of Domestic Distribution, Dan Fellman, and President of International Distribution, Veronika Kwan Vandenberg.

The film has earned $248.7 million domestically, and $271.7 internationally, for a worldwide total of $520.4, to date. “Man of Steel” opened at the top of the box office in the U.S. and Canada, with the biggest June release ever. The film opened at number one in many international territories, and continues its roll out with record-breaking bows. The film is still to open in Brazil and Japan.

The film continues to set records worldwide in IMAX® theatres, where it has earned an estimated $27 million domestically and $18.9 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $45.9 million.

Dan Fellman stated, “This success for ‘Man of Steel’ is a great 75th birthday present for this iconic character. The film took Superman back to his roots for a new generation of moviegoers, who have once again embraced Krypton and Kansas’ favorite son. The film’s strong Cinemascore tells us that word of mouth should keep the ‘Man of Steel’ flying through the summer.”

Henry is the fourth of five boys who grew up on the British Channel Island of Jersey.

He is very close to his family and credits them with keeping him sane and normal.

He said: “I have two amazing parents who always said ‘do the right thing, but do your own thing and always remain humble and thankful for what you get’.

“And my brothers threaten to kick my ass as soon as I’m not humble!

“There’s something about being exposed in the world of acting and Hollywood that when you go home to your family it doesn’t matter what you say or what kind of mood you’re in, they know who you are.

And Henry, who plays opposite Amy Adams as Lois Lane in the upcoming blockbuster, credits his siblings with honing his physical skills.

“And that allowed us to be very physical and allowed us to be ourselves, but we set ground rules. There was always a sense of restraint and you never went past a certain line. Henry has been acting regularly in film and TV since he first appeared in The Count of Monte Cristo in 2002 and including Immortals in 2011 and The Cold Light of Day last year.

He starred in four seasons of The Tudors playing the part of Duke of Suffolk Charles Brandon, who raises the hackles of Henry VIII — played by Corkman Jonathan Rhys Meyers — by marrying his sister.

Henry remembers his time filming in Ireland fondly.

There was a time when Superman was the most famous superhero in the world. He might very well still be, but you wouldn’t know it in America. At Halloween, Batman and Iron Man costumes usually far outnumber the Superman costumes.

Of course, the success of other superheroes has largely been driven by the movies. The Batman movie franchise is by far the highest grossing box office superhero franchise in the U.S. with close to a $1.9 billion total gross. The Avengers franchise is next with a $1.7 billion total gross.


Where is poor Superman on the list? Well, he’s way down below Spider-Man, X-Men, and Iron Man. Superman has only accumulated a paltry $518 million at the U.S. box office. The Dark Knight by itself made more than all the Superman movies combined at the box office.

Now, in fairness, most of the Superman movies were released in the seventies and the eighties before tickets prices reached the inflated levels where they sit today. But the fact that Superman has only had one movie in the last quarter century sort of proves the point of his waning popularity.

Henry Cavill, the star of Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot Man of Steel, had never really done anything on that level of magnitude before and has spent the last several months of his life under the microscope and spoke about the experience.
