Benedict Cumberbatch, James McAvoy... was Starter for 10 the film that kicked off a new era for British movie stars?

WHAT'S ON
17:46, 23 JUNE 2015
BY KATHRYN WILLIAMS

It was the story of a working-class underdog in 1980s Bristol, but the star-studded cast of 2006 film Starter for 10 have become huge global stars in their own right.

The film followed student Brian Jackson (James McAvoy) as he embarked on his first year at Bristol University, battling cliched opposition from peers as he attempted to get on the popular TV show, University Challenge.

So, let's see which familiar faces got their Starter for 10 correct with the film:

James McAvoy

Now known for his role as a young Professor Charles Xavier in the X Men series, Scottish actor McAvoy was already familiar to fans of Paul Abbott's television show, Shameless, in which he co-starred with his now-wife, Anne-Marie Duff.

He's also impressed in movies such as The Last King of Scotland, Atonement and the adaptation of Irvine Welsh's novel Filth.

Benedict Cumberbatch

He's our Sherlock Holmes here in Wales thanks to Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss' re-imagining of Arthur Conan Doyle's character for the BBC hit, but back in 2006 (or 1985) Cumbers was the snotty nosed team-mate of McAvoy's Brian.

Since 2010 he's been filming Sherlock in and around Wales, but he's also gained notoriety from Hollywood thanks to roles in The Imitation Game, Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy, 12 Years a Slave and as the voice of dragon Smaug in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

 Mark Gattiss

Any fan of comedy would recognise Gatiss as one of the League of Gentlemen, but it wasn't until Sherlock he became a household name.

In the 1980s movie he portrayed University Challenge host Bamber Gascoigne who puts the main characters to the test on national TV.

In Sherlock (which he co-created) Gatiss also plays the titular character's brother, Mycroft.

Gatiss also has a small recurring role in Game of Thrones.

Keira Knightley and her husband James Righton were all smiles on Friday night as they made their first red carpet appearance as parents-to-be. Pregnant Keira showed off her growing bump in a bold yellow dress as she and her husband joined stars at the BAFTA TV Tea Party in LA.

Former Klaxons musician James, who tied the knot with Keira in France in May 2013, was supporting his wife as she prepares to make numerous appearances throughout awards season.

Keira's role alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in historical thriller The Imitation Game has earned her several nominations, including Best Supporting Actress at the BAFTAs and the Golden Globes, which take place on 11 January.

James will no doubt be cheering his 29-year-old wife on as she goes up against Jessica Chastain, Patricia Arquette, Meryl Streep and Emma Stone during Sunday night's ceremony in LA.

Emily blunt saves Meryl Streep's life on Into the Woods set (video) Into The Woods movie clip

VANITY FAIR
BY JULIE MILLER
NOVEMBER 26, 2014 1:23 PM

Last night on the Late Show with David Letterman, Blunt revealed that she is getting sick of her characters being treated terribly by Streep, especially after the British actress came to the Oscar’s winner’s rescue on-set—while pregnant!—essentially saving Streep’s life. “She owes me big time,” Blunt said.

Blunt told Letterman that she even proposed to Streep that the two reverse power roles for a future collaboration. “I think at some point I should play the Queen of Versailles and she could be my lonely dressmaker,” Blunt said of her peer. After the audience applauded, Blunt continued, “I think it’s a great idea and I mentioned it to her.” Sadly, Streep did not seem as enthused about the power dynamic change-up. “Her response was, ‘Dream on,’” Blunt confided.

Keira Knightley: Weinstein Bid for Knightley Film Likened to Sparta Battle

'Can a Song Save Your Life?'

BLOOMBERG BUSINESS WEEK
By Ari Altstedter September 12, 2013

The lights hadn’t even come up at the world premiere of “Can a Song Save Your Life?” when Marc Schipper’s BlackBerry began buzzing with messages from distributors clamoring for rights.

The drama, starring Keira Knightley playing a singer trying to make it in the music business, had been flagged by publicists and organizers at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival as one of the hottest titles for sale. It didn’t disappoint.

“Even before the credits were rolling, we had a bunch of offers in, people saying, ‘Don’t go to anyone else because we really want this movie,’ ” Schipper, chief operating officer of Exclusive Media Group and the negotiator for the film’s producers, said in a Sept. 10 telephone interview.

After an all-night bidding war, Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein’s namesake company bought the U.S. distribution rights for $7 million. Organizers say the deal was one of the biggest in the festival’s 38-year history and highlighted Toronto’s place as one of the world’s leading film markets.

Perhaps the greatest battle played out at downtown restaurant Patria on Sept. 7. As Knightley, co-stars Mark Ruffalo, Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green and director John Carney (“Once”) held court on a narrow patio, representatives from The Weinstein Co., Fox Searchlight Pictures Inc. and Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. (LGF:US) pressed through the party’s 250 guests to make their pitch, according to Tobin Armbrust, one of the film’s producers.

Band of Spartans
He likened the scene at the restaurant to a battle depicted in the 2006 movie “300” in which the Persians struggled to surge through a gap in the mountains defended by a small band of Spartans.

Some of the biggest stars to ever tread the boards at the National Theatre will be invited back for a special 50th anniversary show.

The theatre's director Nicholas Hytner said the "one-off performance", which he will direct, is to be broadcast on BBC2.

He said: "That will be a celebration of 50 years of the National Theatre.

"It will tell the story of those 50 years through a montage of highlights from those 50 years.

"It will be largely live but there will be a small amount of filmed or archived material in it and I hope it would involve as many as possible of the great performers of the last 50 years who are still with us."

Among the stars that have performed at the theatre on London's Southbank are Benedict Cumberbatch, Dame Judi Dench, Dame Maggie Smith and James Corden but Hytner refused to confirm any names, telling reporters: "We've started the asking but I can't tell you yet because it's nine months in the future and inevitably people are saying, 'Yes of course, if we're available'."

New Images Of Benedict Cumberbatch, Adelaide Clemens & Rebecca Hall In 'Parade's End' TELEVISION BY JOE CUNNINGHAM AUGUST 6, 2012 11:36 AM (INDIEWIRE)

Back in 2006 James McAvoy, Alice Eve, Dominic Cooper, James Corden, Rebecca Hall and Benedict Cumberbatch all starred together in the low key British rom-com “Starter For Ten.” It would take a hefty chunk of change to reassemble that cast in 2012, but the BBC and HBO have managed to secure the latter two, Hall and Cumberbatch, for their co-produced miniseries “Parade’s End.” Also working on the Tom Stoppard penned novel adaptation are Rupert Everett, Miranda Richardson, Anne-Marie Duff (aka Mrs James McAvoy), Roger Allam, Janet McTeer, Jack Huston and Aussie newcomer Adelaide Clemens.

The first images from the series have now surfaced ahead of its August 16th premiere on BBC2, and at first glance everything looks lusciously period and a little bit reminiscent of ITV’s “Downton Abbey.” Maybe it’s the Edwardian setting of the British countryside and the sight of a grand country manor, or maybe it’s just that Cumberbatch’s swept blonde hair-do looks a little bit like Dan Stevens’ in the Emmy-baiting series. Other than the many pictures of Mr. Cumberbatch, there are a couple of looks at Rebecca Hall (looking as stunning as usual), but we get to see even more of the 22 year-old Clemens who will play the young suffragette Valentine Wannop.

JAMES CORDEN: THE WOMAN WHO SAVED ME (EXPRESS CO.)

Almost teary and a bit stuttery, Corden could only gush about how he was “overwhelmed” to be mentioned in the same breath as other nominees James Earl Jones, Frank Langella, John Lithgow and “my favourite actor in the world” Philip Seymour Hoffman. “To be on a list with you was enough,” he said, addressing the other actors in the audience.

His performance has been likened to Gwyneth Paltrow’s overwhelmingly gushy, weepy 1999 Oscar acceptance speech but actually Corden’s wasn’t an embarrassing, cringeworthy affair.

It seemed heartfelt, sincere and rather modest and when Corden went on to speak about his fiancée Julia Carey he would have certainly won over the emotion-loving American audience.

“My girlfriend Julia gave birth to our son five days before we started rehearsals,” Corden said as the cameras panned to the attractive blonde sitting in the auditorium. “She’s my baby mama and I can’t wait to marry her. Seriously, I would not be holding this if it wasn’t for her. She made me say ‘us’ instead of ‘I’ and ‘we’ instead of ‘me’ and I love her. Thank you very much.”

The speech was a far cry from the one he gave at the Baftas in 2008 when Corden – then riding high on the success of the BBC comedy series Gavin & Stacey – went on stage and complained that he shouldn’t have won two awards, he should have won three.

That was the old, arrogant Corden and the actor has already credited Julia, who has worked as a TV producer and for the charity Save The Children, for making him a better person. His Tony Award speech has clearly emphasised the point.

It’s also true that after he met Julia in 2010 his life took an upward swing. Before that, it had been a rather turbulent affair of highs and lows. As the son of Salvation Army parents Corden has said he “couldn’t have grown up in a more secure and lovely family” but he was always an attention-seeker and so when he scaled the heights of fame, it was like a dream come true.

'I can't wait to marry her': James Corden chokes back tears as he thanks fiancé after scooping Best Actor gong at Tony Awards By NADIA MENDOZA and IONA KIRBY PUBLISHED: 23:00 EST, 10 June 2012 | UPDATED: 07:07 EST, 11 June 2012 (MAIL ON LINE)

James Corden led the winners at the Tony Awards tonight as he scooped the gong for Best Leading Actor in a Play.

The 33-year-old beat out a host of other Broadway stars to win the accolade for his efforts in One Man, Two Guvnors.

And the one person James was most excited to thank as he took to the stage was fiancé Julia Carey.

Welling up, James said: 'My girlfriend Julia gave birth to our son like, five days before we started rehearsals.

'She's my baby mama, and I can't wait to marry her. Seriously, I would not be holding this if it wasn't for her.'

He tearfully added: 'She makes me say "us" instead of "I" and "we" instead of "me", and I love her. Thank you very much.'

The Three Musketeers - My Review

THE THREE MUSKETEERS: MY REVIEW

By Patricia.

I first picked up the Alexandre Dumas classic when I started college, after putting up with my father’s pestering for years, telling me I should read it, it’s such a great book. But the sheer volume of it intimidated me to no end and after a few attempts to get into the story failed I put it aside for the nth time.

Finally one day, probably out of boredom, I decided to concentrate and read it. The initial part, I must say didn’t ‘grab’ me, it took a lot of effort to get into it, but once D’Artagnan arrives in Paris everything changed and I could not put it down!

Fast forward to 2010, when I heard that a 3D version of the Musketeers was being planned and no other than my favorite British actor, Matthew Macfadyen was playing my very favorite of the musketeers, Athos. Although, initial reports had him playing Aramis, that wouldn’t have worked, he is the perfect Athos.

I will start with the not so good. I am disappointed that Paul W.S. Anderson decided to leave out a very main character, Monsieur de Treville, the very wise and fatherly captain of the musketeers. The story is just not the same without him, the classic tale of the first meeting between D’Artagnan (Logan Lerman) and the three musketeers Athos, Porthos (Ray Stevenson) and Aramis (Luke Evans) is what sets the rest of the story.

I also disliked the fact that they put too much emphasis on Milady de Winter (Milla Jovovich), in the novel she is an important character, but not so important. Obviously, the fact that Milla is director Anderson’s wife weighs heavily. But in all I thought she got too much screen time.

When I first heard the words air ships, I thought, oh no! This is going to be a disaster. I must say, as far fetched as it sounded it works in this setting. I think Anderson said in an interview during the London press tour that it needed to be a 21st century version. Well, he shocked me, that’s for sure.

As far as the musketeers, Matthew Macfadyen doesn’t disappoint as Athos, he has that mysterious, haunted personality going for him and he is very refined at the same time, looks regal, which the character was supposed to be. The Count de la Fere was of noble lineage. He also displays a natural talent for sword fighting, very agile and elegant as well as being the undisputed leader of the group.

Luke Evans as Aramis is perfect in my opinion, he has that stylish air about him and mysterious as well. A cat-like swashbuckler, Luke could have much more screen time in my opinion, he is so talented and has a lovely voice. I also missed the part on him being confused with the Duque of Buckingham (Orlando Bloom), the actors do look alike. My favorite Luke scene, the parking ticket to D’Artagnan for not picking up the horse’s poop!

Now, Ray Stevenson as Porthos is the lovable, vain musketeer, who I love for different reasons. He is the funny one, the one that makes everyone laugh when the going gets tough. Ray Stevenson is great as Porthos. Very brute like in his fighting, he minces no words and is very flashy.

The funniest scenes were the ones that included Freddie Fox as the King acting like a complete spoiled brat, which is how I imagined him to be, but with his heart in the right place and of course all the scenes with James Corden. The sleeping in the terrace is very funny and elicited chuckles from the viewers as well as the constant shutting him down by the musketeers.

Logan Lerman as D’Artagnan did a good job as the fearless youth come to become a musketeer. I liked how he is the actual age of the character in the novel, and the others do seem much older, fatherly or brotherly if you like.

I wish Paul Anderson would have spent more time exploring the relationship and personalities of the musketeers, that is the richness in the novel, all their background stories, Athos’ heartbreak, Aramis’ dilemma and Porthos’ extravagance but good heart. Some of it comes through thanks to the brilliant actors portraying the trio, but quite a lot is also lost.

Of course Christoph Waltz as Richelieu and Mads Mikelsen as Rochefort are brilliant in their roles as baddies. Orlando Bloom is good as Buckingham, who was also a disappointment in regards to the original character, who is not really a ‘bad guy’, more misguided and arrogant than anything, in love with a married woman, who happens to be the Queen of England.

In general, I thought these musketeers are perfectly cast and now I can not think of any others playing their respective roles, I believe the boys talked about that in their press tour. They’re absolutely right.

The visual scenery is magnificent! It was very nice to see all those locations come to life, after following this movie all throughout the production process and looking at numerous stills during the last year.

I would definitely recommend this as a fun family movie, maybe with the exception of the last fight between D’Artagnan and Rochefort, where there is a little blood, but I appreciate the fact that they keep it clean in that regard, the fights are violent enough. Also, I though the scantily dressed Milady wasn’t necessary.

Clearly there is a hint of a sequel at the end of the movie and I, as a fan of all these wonderful actors, very much hope to see.

All for One and One for All!
