'Downton Abbey' Season 5: The First Trailer, With Passion And Fire (spoilers)

A surprise tonight from ITV in Britain.

Before the season opener of The X Factor – still a very big event in the British television calendar, and all the more so since Simon Cowell returns to the judging panel tonight for the first time in four years – ITV ‘premiered’ the trailer for the upcoming season 5 of Downton Abbey:

The trailer confirms some of what’s already been reported – such as the impending fire that burns through the great house itself – and teases forbidden passions and new characters (such as the guest roles for Richard E Grant and Anna Chancellor).

And it features the Earl of Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) delivering the chilling line: ‘Our grandchild is about to be stolen from us forever.’ Does he mean Sybbie or George? Or is this perhaps an even more explosive scene, when he has discovered Edith’s secret?

Benedict Cumberbatch with his new friend

Sherlock star star Benedict Cumberbatch appears to be off the market - sparking horror amongst his legion of adoring female fans.

The actor has been spotted out in London twice this week with a mystery brunette, enjoying a play at the National Theatre and checking out a screening of Back To The Future at London’s latest fad Secret Cinema.

And the news has prompted uproar amongst his surprisingly obsessed female following - who imaginatively like to label themselves “Cumberbitches” - who quickly began spreading the news between themselves.

I’m told the star was even spotted dancing with his new squeeze as they enjoyed the movie at the Olympic Park in east London, where they were also joined by his Sherlock co-star Louise Brearley - known to fans of the show as Molly Hooper.

'James Bond 24' Movie Rumors: Tom Hardy Tops The List Of Replacements For The Next Actor To Take Over The Iconic Role [VIDEO]

While Daniel Craig is set to keep the role of James Bond for the next two movies, it seems like the actor may move on from the role after his contract runs up, but could a movie villain be taking over the role after him?

It seems like The Dark Knight Rises and Mad Max: Road Fury star Tom Hardy may be the actor at the top of the list of James Bond replacements, according to Celebrity Ex news posted on Sunday. The video added that Hardy will be the right age by the time Craig's contract runs up.

It would be an inspired choice since Hardy has experience both with action, leading a franchise, and blockbuster films. The British actor has been in Christopher Nolan's Inception and The Dark Knight Rises, has been action ready in Warrior, and will be taking over his own franchise with Mad Max next year.

Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch is in talks to bring his stage Hamlet to the screen. The play begins performances at the Barbican next year, and negotiations for it to be filmed live and shown in cinemas through National Theatre Live for one night are well advanced.

The actor, along with the production’s director Lyndsey Turner and producer Sonia Friedman, has spent more than a year ensuring that this will be a ‘people’s Hamlet’.

‘I felt very strongly that as wide an audience as possible should have access to it,’ Cumberbatch told me.

The Barbican’s allocation of seats for the entire 12-week run, which starts on August 5 next year, have been snapped up already.

But there will be 100 seats available per performance. ‘They will be sprinkled throughout the house . . . they’re not behind pillars,’ the 38-year-old joked.

He said that he and Ms Turner were eager to make their Hamlet as ‘fresh’ as possible, ‘like a new play that just landed as a pdf in someone’s computer inbox at the Royal Court’, as he described it.

‘We want to escape the idea that it has been done before, and we’re looking at the whole play — not just the eponymous hero.’

Benedict is a thespian polymath. There’s no role he cannot take on.

We had met to discuss another of his projects: a towering portrait — one of the great performances of the year — of Alan Turing, the man who helped break the Nazi’s Enigma code, in the film The Imitation Game.

Watching the movie, I was struck by his approach to Turing: the way he grasped and captured the man, not just the cliched genius. The film is all the more heartbreaking because of it.

Richard Armitage earns praise for 'standout acting' in "Into the Storm"

Richard Armitage is one of the lead actors in the film "Into the Storm" and his 'standout performance' is earning him accolades from social media entertainment critics such as Digital Spy. He plays a school vice principal in the film that is now in theatres and revolves around storm trackers, thrill-seekers, and everyday townspeople who videotape and document an unprecedented onslaught of tornadoes touching down in the town of Silverton.

Critics such as Digital Spy online magazine note how he distinguished himself as a "stoic, reluctant hero" and his acting performance has resulted in greater scrutiny of this talented actor who has shown an enjoyment of keeping fans 'on the hook' with anticipation.

He was recently interviewed about his upcoming projects and he decided to increase the interest in his projects by disclosing that he will be seen in a cameo role in a movie known to many but he would not disclose what movie it might be.

Immediately fans and some social media entertainment observers started speculating about what movies he might be in and at the moment fans and entertainment observers are thinking either "The Avengers: Age of Ultron" or "Spooks".

He played the Nazi spy and assassin Heniz Kruger in "Captain America: The First Avenger" while others suspect he might show up in a flashback scene when the "Spooks" movie is released.

The "Strike Back" star has shrewdly increased interest in his projects, past, present and future. Fans are looking back at his career to see what movies were 'hits' and have sequels and also looking at his current role on stage in the play "The Crucible" for hints as to what he may be preparing for in the future and that leads to interest in his new projects.

Michael Fassbender: Frank Exposes the Gulf Between the Brilliant and the Rest of Us (movie review)

MIAMI NEW TIMES

Frank Exposes the Gulf Between the Brilliant and the Rest of Us

Frank never takes off the head. But how does he eat, brush his teeth, or shave, Jon asks? Replies Soronprfbs' manager (Scoot McNairy): "You're just going to have to go with this." So we do. Director Lenny Abrahamson frames the film as a millennial myth, sealing the band away in a remote cabin in Ireland to record its first album, which sounds like whale noises, acid freak-outs, and the B-52s. (Composer Stephen Rennicks may be a genius himself.) Isolated among the trees, Frank walks tall — all Fassbender has to act with is his spine — and unnerves Jon with his ability to compose a song as easily as breathing. An off-the-cuff ode to a strand of fabric becomes a ditty worthy of prime Paul McCartney. He's no gimmick — he just looks like one — and like Jon, we're torn between wanting to share his gifts with the world and the looming fear that the world has become so cynical that it will write him off as a joke.

Wrested from the forest and steered at Jon's request to the streets of Austin's South by Southwest festival, Frank looks smaller and stupider — no better than the twee ukulele starlets and a whole lot less accessible. The real-world detour is grating, as are Jon's frequent tweets about the band, but that they cheapen the alienness of the film's first half is kind of the point. As much as we might wish they weren't, our brains are aligned with the small-minded and corruptible Jon: Our culture has so merged music and commerce that we can't be in the thrall of splendor without wondering how to market it. Even Frank himself falls sway to fame, muttering about YouTube, which he calls "secret camera," as if it's a mystifying cargo cult. Only Gyllenhaal's angry art-rock girl is aware of the fragility of his mental health: Frank doesn't wear the head because he can; he wears the head because he must.

Look closely at Frank's mask and you'll spot two plaster bandages by his nose, a hint of a life that's taken some lumps. Study Fassbender's limbs and see one of the best physical performances of the decade. His face never changes, but he has visible soul. In small movements — the twitch of a hand, a wobble under a door frame, a beer, and straw held uselessly by his painted mouth — Fassbender gives us glimpses of what Frank's isolating genius has cost him. Would we, too, sacrifice normal pleasures for a chance at eternal greatness? Or would we rather suffer alongside Jon, cursed with the heart-melting torture of knowing that the gods of music will never love us in return?

Benedict Cumberbatch wax figure in final stages - see the pictures

Madame Tussauds has been overwhelmed by requests for a wax figure of Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch and after two sittings and hundreds of measurements, it's really starting to come together.

Cumberbatch is going to appear "premiere ready" in a dashing suit when he takes up residence in the London branch of the popular attraction.

The star himself is excited at the prospect, mostly it seems because he can "finally photobomb" himself.

Here's how it's looking now...

Charlie Hunnam Misses His 'Sons of Anarchy' Co-Star as Much as We Do

MASHABLE
Sandra Gonzalez

Warning: Spoilers ahead

soa animated GIF

Last year of Sons of Anarchy was brutal when it came to departures. Not only did Clay Marrow meet his maker, but Jax's (Charlie Hunnam) beloved wife Tara (Maggie Siff) was forked to death in a brutal scene that had her go toe-to-toe with Gemma (Katey Sagal).

We're still not over it — and neither are Siff's co-stars.

In this exclusive clip from an extra feature on the Sons of Anarchy season 6 Blu-ray, out Aug. 26, Hunnam recounts the sadness he felt in losing Siff, with whom he says he shared "the greatest collaboration I've ever had with another actor."

'DOWNTON ABBEY'S MICHELLE DOCKERY'S ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE TAKES PLACE IN FRONT OF A HORDE OF SHIRTLESS MEN — VIDEO

BUSTLE
ALANNA BENNETT @ALANNABENNETT A DAY AGO ENTERTAINMENT

The mystery of who the men behind Michelle Dockery in her Ice Bucket Challenge video are will haunt me for a long time. At least a week. Maybe longer! But really, Lady Mary, what mischief are you up to these days?

The Downton Abbey star, who is up for the Outstanding Actress in a Drama award at this Monday’s Emmys, decorated the backround of her icy experience with shirtless well-groomed men in gold lame swimsuits. Bless her for this. What was the thought process? Who of her friends did she call first to ask this favor? What was the day like, before and after this video was taken? I’m honestly just assuming it was brunch and endless mimosas — mainly because the copious amount of screaming Dockery does when she gets doused with that water is more assumed after four mimosas than after none.

Henry Cavill: ‘Batman V Superman’ Will See Superman Answer For ‘Man Of Steel’ Destruction [SPOILERS]

INQUISITOR
August 23, 2014

It appears Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will address the much talked about destruction Superman laid on Metropolis following an epic battle with General Zod. Director Zack Snyder — who is at the helm of both films — was heavily criticized for the final scene of Man of Steel, which showed a city in ruins and turned off many fans.

If you remember, Superman (Henry Cavill) has finally had it with the vicious General Zod (Michael Shannon) and doesn’t hold back when the two meet in Metropolis, and the villain tries to destroy all that Superman holds dear, including his mother, Martha Kent (Diane Lane). An epic battle ensues and nobody is spared; buildings are destroyed and glass is shattered as the two superhumans fight it out.

Some spoilers may follow, so beware before you continue to read.

According to Batman News, the Washington, D.C. scene we will see in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is directly related to the havoc brought on by Superman’s fury. This is how the website describes the insider info they have:

“A major action scene was shot in July in one of the big studios in Detroit. Without giving too much away…it involves Superman and the United States Capitol building in Washington D.C. Superman will have to answer for what happened at the end of Man of Steel. Half the public blames him for all the death and destruction. If it wasn’t for Superman being there, General Zod would have never come to Earth.”

Is Richard Armitage's secret cameo in Avengers 2... or the Spooks movie?

DIGITAL SPY
By Emma Dibdin
Tuesday, Aug 19 2014, 4:10am

Spooks

Interviewing Richard Armitage is never less than a pleasure, and our chat with him and on-screen son Max Deacon for Into the Storm was no exception.

But aside from finding out which Hobbit cast members Armitage would take with him into a real-life storm, this interview was also notable for an intriguing titbit towards the end.

"I'm doing another movie after I've finished on stage," Armitage told us. "But I can't tell you what it is. But you'll know!"

Intriguing, no? The fact that he's so cagey about details suggests that this is a role with some form of NDA attached, which immediately makes us think blockbuster. So we at Digital Spy have put our deerstalkers on for a spot of what we'll call deductive speculation.

Given that Armitage appeared in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger as Nazi spy and assassin Heinz Kruger, our first thought was that he might crop up in The Avengers: Age of Ultron.
