SPOILERS AHEAD

You kind of had to see this coming, right?

Last night on the series finale of "Sons of Anarchy," Jax Teller, played by Charlie Hunnam, had his last ride and went out in a blaze of glory -- kind of.

After shooting and killing his mother last week, Jax said goodbye to his sons and farewell to his club. There were thoughts by fans that his own club would be his undoing, but alas his death was an event that was definitely a shock in the way it went down.

Jax met his death after being chased by police and intentionally driving his motorcycle into a truck driven by guest star Michael Chiklis, according to the Entertainment Weekly recap.

After the show, show creator Kurt Sutter and show star Hunnam went on "Anarchy Afterword" to talk about the ending after seven years on the air.

"It's the end of a little era for us," Hunnam said, according to E! News. "A lot of sleepless nights and bottles of tequila."

Hunnam, 34, continued about the ending, "We had talked about there being various potential versions of the ending in the beginning of the season and had a couple of conversations."

But Sutter, 50, decided to go with the ending where Jax would end his own life on his own terms. Also, the final ride for Jax mirrored his father's police chase that killed the senior Teller.

Golden Globes: Cumberbatch, Redmayne, Pike and Jones among Britons recognised

BBC NEWS
December 11, 2014

Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones in The Theory of Everything and Benedict Cumberbatch in The Imitation Game

Benedict Cumberbatch, Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones are among a host of British stars in contention for the 2015 Golden Globe awards.

Cumberbatch, Redmayne and fellow Briton David Oyelowo make up three of the nominees for best actor in a drama.

Felicity Jones, Redmayne's co-star in Stephen Hawking biopic The Theory of Everything, is up for best actress in a drama, as is Gone Girl's Rosamund Pike.

The 72nd Golden Globes will be held in Beverly Hills on 11 January.

Cumberbatch's citation comes for his role as World War II code breaker Alan Turing in The Imitation Game, for which Keira Knightley gets a best supporting actress nod.

Bookmakers William Hill make Redmayne their 10/11 favourite to win the best actor in a drama award, with Cumberbatch just behind at 6/4.

Both actors were nominated for Screen Actors Guild awards on Wednesday, as were Jones, Pike and Knightley.

Cumberbatch and Redmayne are expected to receive Oscar nominations next month, as is Michael Keaton for his work in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's darkly comic Birdman.

Because the Golden Globes divides its nominations between dramas and musicals and comedies, Keaton is shortlisted in a different category.

Redmayne said he was "beyond thrilled" and would "have a few mulled wines to celebrate", while Jones, who plays Hawking's first wife Jane in The Theory of Everything, said it was "a tremendous moment to get the news".

Knightley and Pike are among other nominees to have expressed pleasure and thanks at having been recognised.

Ralph Fiennes returns to 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' just in time for awards season

HIT FIX
By Gregory Ellwood  @HitFixGregory | Tuesday, Nov 11, 2014 4:16 PM

Eight months after it hit theaters, "The Grand Budapest Hotel" is back in business, and here's hoping Hollywood is paying attention.

Ralph Fiennes joined co-stars Tony Revolori and Jeff Goldblum for a final SAG nominating committee Q&A Monday night in Los Angeles that this pundit was lucky enough to moderate. Most in the packed theater had already seen "Budapest" but wanted a chance to hear the film's stars discuss their journey into Wes Anderson's latest creation in person.

Fiennes, who plays the indomitable M. Gustav, discussed how little he cared to look at Anderson's detailed animatic of the picture and how a friend of the director's gave him slight inspiration for the role (will the real M. Gustav please stand up?). Revolori, who plays Zero the faithful Lobby Boy, recalled how nervous he was meeting Fiennes for the first time during a fitting and how the Oscar nominee reassured him with a hug. And Goldblum, who plays the unfortunate lawyer Kovacs, could not stop praising Anderson's vision and the "humanity" he brought to such a precise creative endeavor. We also learned that Fiennes tried to convince Anderson to pick a few current colognes as the infamous L'Air de Panache, but the Francophile would have none of it (what it really smells like is still a mystery). Fiennes also revealed Mendel's pastry concoctions were actually too sweet for him to eat and the audience was somewhat shocked to discover that Revolori is severely allergic to chocolate and never took a bite of any of the film's numerous deserts.

Q&As live and die on the talent and this trio made sure the audience realized just how specific their performances were (i.e., it wasn't Anderson dictating), while still providing some wonderfully entertaining anecdotes. They also heaped praise on their co-stars, who helped fill out one of the most memorable acting ensembles in recent memory with Tilda Swinton, Willem Dafoe, Edward Norton, Tom Wilkinson and F. Murray Abraham earning individual praise. It was a fun and fast conversation with a lot of love from the SAG members on hand.

The quick trip to Los Angeles for Fiennes featured a whirlwind of "Budapest" awards-themed photo shoots and interviews (look for a special one-on-one with Christoph Waltz soon), an hour-long career retrospective for BAFTA members and a solo American Cinematheque Q&A hosted at the Aero Theater in Santa Monica. The legendary actor may have an outside shot at earning a Best Actor nomination (he's in good company this year if he doesn't), but he is still keeping the doors open for "Budapest's" awards prospects overall. Will it be enough? Let's review, shall we?

At this date, the film is still one of the best reviewed films of the year with an 88 on Metacritic (for comparison: "Boyhood" has a rare 100, "Birdman" an 89 and "Foxcatcher" currently has an 87), as well as a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes (for comparison: "Boyhood" has 99%, "Whiplash" is at 97%, "Birdman" is at 94%, and "Nightcrawler" is at 94%). The film is also, considering its audience, a global smash, earning almost $60 million domestic and $172.2 million globally. Those are career-best numbers for Anderson and you can debate whether or not it's his best reviewed film to date (it might be splitting hairs at this point). Needless to say, "Budapest" is a huge success that is trying to break the recent Oscar curse that finds the Academy ignoring early releases in the qualifying calendar.

In theory, with so many potential contenders falling by the wayside (and you know who you are), "Budapest's" slot should already be solidified. That being said, benchmarks like a SAG ensemble nomination, a Golden Globes nomination for Best Comedy or Musical (a given), landing on AFI's top 10 list, earning a spot in the National Board of Review's top 10 and, most importantly, a slew of top 10 critics list mentions are key. Searchlight will campaign "Budapest" as best they can, but they also need the awards media to stop somehow pretending it's not in the game because it came out before Cannes (Sundance titles seem to get a pass because they are usually released in June).

Giving Michael Caine the Props He Deserves

MOVIE PILOT
by Simon Hardy Butler ⋅ Posted on December 4th, 2014 at 12:59am

The best thing about Interstellar, in my opinion, was Michael Caine. So why aren't more people talking about his performance?

Even if you haven't seen the movie, it's worth listening to him recite selected lines from Dylan Thomas' poem "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night," which may be found in at least one of the trailers. I've included one below.

He's magnificent, isn't he? What a professional. And he elevated this film significantly, though it needed all he could muster.

I'm thinking an Oscar nod wouldn't be out of the question. But are Academy voters doing the same?

James McAvoy: US doesn't get normal Brits

BELFAST TELEGRAPH
December 11, 2014

James McAvoy has explained he doesn't think his recent film Filth did well in the US because audiences there find it difficult to relate to working class people who aren't American.

The Disappearance Of Eleanor Rigby actor said he thought that US viewers struggled with British projects that weren't traditional costume dramas, such as the adaptation of Irvine Welsh's crime comedy novel Filth.

He said of Filth's limited success across the pond: "It's always been difficult. It's not the first time selling something that's very of its nature and very of its country.

"This isn't a bad thing by the way, but if we're selling costume dramas or we're selling that kind of thing, then they seem to go for it, but if you're selling stuff about working class people, they've got to be 'American' for them to get it, and it's always been like that.

"I can't think of too many films that have broken out there massively and become commercial hits. What we always hope is that we can make our money back in our own country, which is not often the case. We're really pleased that in the country that bought it, the people got it, and they got it big as well, which is really great."

Great Dames: As Judi Dench and Maggie Smith turn 80 we look at how they became movie royalty

MIRROR
Dec 06, 2014 16:13 By Lewis Panther

Judi Dench Maggie Smith animated GIF

When Judi Dench and Maggie Smith were a couple of unknowns sharing a dressing room nearly 60 years ago they didn’t have a game plan, much less a Dame plan.

They weren’t banking on stardom and honours. They were just grateful to be working.

And when Dame Judi turns 80 on Tuesday, 19 days before Dame Maggie, they’ll be looking back not just on glittering careers, but on a friendship that has spanned their whole working lives.

So we pay tribute to the great Dames – and an incredible joint body of work that’s seen them notch up more than 350 award nominations between them, winning an amazing 108.

In the tale of the tape, Dame Judi is slightly ahead, with 55 awards from 203 nominations against Dame Maggie’s 53 prizes from 147 nominations.

But given that both their mantelpieces must be groaning under the weight of Oscars, Baftas and Golden Globes, who’s counting?

Maggie Smith

Britain’s greatest living actresses have an easy-going bond that is clear to see when they do interviews together.

Dame Maggie will playfully point out her pal is a fiery Sagittarius while she was born under Capricorn, making her the junior half of their friendship.

And it’s a double act that shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon.

They may be entering their ninth decade but both stage and screen legends are determined the show must go on.

Dame Judi has problems with her eyesight which means it is hard for her to watch movies and she struggles to indulge in her favourite hobbies.

Painting and reading are difficult and to learn her roles she has to have scripts read to her.

But she is still busy making films and was nominated for her seventh Oscar last year for Philomena before joining Dame Maggie, who she affectionately calls Mags, in India to film a sequel to their hit movie The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

Benedict Cumberbatch receives two SAG nominations... as fellow Brits Rosamund Pike and Eddie Redmayne also get nods

Benedict Cumberbatch, Eddie Redmayne and Rosamund Pike are amongst the British nominations at the 2015 Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Benedict, 38, is in the running for honours in both the TV and movie categories, and will contest for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries for his performance in Sherlock and Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for his turn in The Imitation Game.

The delighted actor said: 'I'm over the moon. And so delighted to receive recognition in such esteemed company for both Sherlock and The Imitation Game by my acting peers. What an amazing early Christmas present! Thank you to all who voted and watched both pieces of work.'

But the actor faces stern competition in the form of Eddie Redmayne, 32, whose incredible performance as Professor Stephen Hawking in The Theory Of Everything has prompted talk of Oscar and BAFTA nominations.

His British co-star Felicity Jones has also been nominated for her role as Hawking's devoted first wife, Jane in the Category for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role.

She will battle it out with Jennifer Aniston (for Cake), Julienne Moore (for Still Alice), Reese Witherspoon (for Wild) and Rosamund Pike, whose performance in a Hollywood adaptation of bestselling novel Gone Girl has won her rave reviews.

Keira Knightley has been nominated for two gongs, including Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in The Imitation Game.

Eddie Redmayne amazed by A-list pals

BELFAST TELEGRAPH

The British star is generating Oscar buzz thanks to his vivid portrayal of Professor Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, and he isn't the only one in his social circle to be doing well. His good pal Benedict Cumberbatch has been lauded for his film The Imitation Game, while Jamie Dornan features in the hotly-anticipated Fifty Shades of Grey adaptation due out in February.

"There’s a group of us. Ben [Cumberbatch] and Tom [Hiddleston] are old friends, but my closest buddies are probably Andrew [Garfield], Tom Sturridge, Jamie Dornan and Charlie Cox," he told Stylist magazine. "I remember being in LA [six years ago] with Jamie, staying on friends’ floors and going to auditions but having nothing to do in between. We ended up driving to this hotel where you get free parking if you buy something to eat, so we’d share a club sandwich and have ruthless, relentless games of ping-pong for an entire afternoon. Frankly, it was astounding any of us managed to achieve anything."

Having friends in the industry helps Eddie deal with some of the trickier aspects, such as fame. However, he is still surprised by the ferocity of feelings some of his fans seem to have. The 32-year-old star recalled one surprising encounter which his family won't let him live down.

"Someone once asked me in an interview which cartoon character I fancied when I was younger and I said, 'Oh, I sort of liked Nala in The Lion King,'" he recalled. "Then one day, I was doing a play in London and it was my birthday, so I was with my family going to dinner after and a fan was standing there with this big Nala teddy. My brother looked at me like, ‘Why have you been given that?’"

As well as riding a career high, 2014 has been a good year for Eddie personally. He got engaged to publicist Hannah Bagshawe in May, which he calls the best thing to have happened to him.

5 things we learned from 'Downton Abbey' cast's royal visit

TODAY
RANDI DAWN
December 8, 2014

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Here are five key things we learned:

George Clooney is not appearing in the Christmas special/season finale
OK, we kind of suspected, but it was confirmed by Bonneville that Clooney merely made a tiny promotional appearance in support of a charity. "He's in a sketch for a fundraiser," said the actor. Joked Nicol, "We didn't all get to meet him, and we're not bitter."

The truth behind that anachronistic water bottle
Remember that "Downton Abbey" publicity photo that included an unexpected cameo by a water bottle? Not intentional, but it worked out nicely: "That photo was cropped originally, and then suddenly it was uncropped," said Bonneville. "[It made us able] to get behind the charity Water Aid in the UK."

Isis the dog's fate is not tied to any current headlines
Rumor had it that Grantham's dog Isis (the one Thomas once locked in a shed overnight!) was going to be killed off because the terror group ISIS had started using the name of the legendary Egyptian goddess. "Any story line involving the dog has nothing to do with horrible international events," said Bonneville.

When Does Tom Hiddleston's 'Crimson Peak' Come Out? You'll Be Waiting a Long Time For the Film's Perfection

BUSTLE
MARTHA SORREN @MARTHASORREN
6 HOURS AGO ENTERTAINMENT

It seems like it’s been so long since fans have gotten to see Tom Hiddleston on the big screen. Thor 2 came out a whole year ago now, but, luckily, the actor’s had a busy year full of filming for various projects. So when can we expect to see Hiddleston’s latest movie Crimson Peak? Unfortunately, not for awhile. Director Guillermo Del Toro is being a perfectionist and, though the movie wrapped filming early last summer, it won’t be released until October 2015.

I’m sad that Hiddlestoners have to wait another year to see the actor on the big screen, especially since Crimson Peak sounds awesome. Hiddleston plays the sinister husband in the “anti-romance” flick, and I want that now — not a year from now.

Fans had held onto hope that we’d at least get a trailer soon, but Del Toro has dashed those dreams as well. Speaking to the Franchise Herald, he talked about how he’s taking his sweet time when it comes to putting out a preview for the film.

Well, since we have the luxury of time because the movie doesn’t come out until October next year… originally, I was going to deliver it in December, and I’d been able to try different things, different cuts, tweak the effects, tweak the music, probably more than any movie I’ve ever done. I have the license now to deliver the movie in January or February. It’s frankly addictive to have that much time.

The Hobbit's Luke Evans talks Bard the Bowman heroics and pointy hats

WALES ON LINE

Luke Evans as Bard the Bowman in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
Luke Evans as Bard the Bowman in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

The role of Bard the Bowman was a career changing performance for Aberbargoed actor Luke Evans, who hasn’t been off our screens in months, it seems.

With film and television roles in Dracula: Untold, The Raven, Clash of the Titans, The Three Musketeers and The Great Train Robbery, Evans’ face is now instantly recognisable thanks to Peter Jackson’s latest JRR Tolkien trilogy, The Hobbit.

At the international press conference at Claridge’s, Evans – who was voted Wales’ Sexiest Man 2014 last month, revealed that it was four years since he shot the dramatic action scenes which saved his character’s hometown from dragon Smaug (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch).

“I knew what Bard was capable of and knew what he ends up doing in the three movies, but when I started playing him he was a father of three without a wife who had a long journey ahead of him.

“It was very strange last night (at the premiere) to see the full sequence of me on the tower (trying to kill Smaug), which was one of the first things I shot.

“Peter had me up on wires for hours! That was four years ago - so I’ve waited a long time to see that!”

Asked whether he would have preferred to have the role of a Hobbit or wizard instead of a human in the movie, he replied: “I would’ve liked a pointy hat!

“I knew what role I was going for before I went in so I knew I was going to be one of the very few humans in the trilogy.

“Actually, I felt quite lucky not to have to spend hours in the make-up chair.”

In the past Evans has revealed that director Peter Jackson requested he read for the part with his Welsh accent.

“I think they realised then that it sounded good, and that it could potentially be a valid accent for Bard,” explained Evans, to fansite theonering.net back in July.

Newly engaged Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter put on an affectionate display at Moet British Independent Film Awards

Supportive: Sophie Hunter accompanied her fiance Benedict Cumberbatch as he attended the Moet British Independent Film Awards at Old Billingsgate Market on Sunday to receive his Variety Award

He only announced his engagement last month and things just keep getting better for Benedict Cumberbatch.

Just a few days after his casting as Marvel’s Doctor Strange was announced, the 38-year-old actor walked the red carpet at the Moet British Independent Film Awards at Old Billingsgate Market on Sunday with his beautiful fiancee Sophie Hunter.

Another highlight of Benedict's skyrocketing career came as he was due to be presented with the Variety Award, which recognises a talent who has helped to focus the international spotlight on the UK, at the annual bash, so it's not surprising Sophie was present to cheer him on.

'She's proud of my work, she's proud of me, and she loves me,' he said. 'That's the bottom line, isn't it? That's one of the reasons it's a good fit. It could be a really difficult thing, but she's just so in command of it.'

However, while the star was open about his admiration for his future wife, he was mum on whether or not they'll be quick to start a family, saying: 'I've got to be very coy on that one. Very silent.'

But Benedict was keen to reassure fans that life does go on, now that he has become engaged to Sophie .
