The sleuth drama Sherlock, a modern-day version of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's crime-solving stories, has been voted the top TV show of 2012 in a Radio Times poll of writers and critics.

Starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, the BBC1 series beat the US Emmy and Golden Globe winning thriller Homeland, shown on Channel 4, into second place.

The Olympics comedy Twenty Twelve, the BBC2 mockumentary following a fictitious team behind the Games and starring Hugh Bonneville and Jessica Hynes, was voted third.

Armando Iannucci's political satire The Thick of It, another BBC2 series, was placed fourth in the TV Top 10.

‘Sherlock’ Stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman Talk ‘Hobbit The Desolation Of Smaug’ (THE GLOBAL DISPATCH)

The “Sherlock” co-stars are together again in next year’s second chapter of the “Hobbit” trilogy and both stars offered a few words in the new Empire Magazine.

Martin Freeman, who stars in the franchise as Bilbo Baggins, was seen in one promotional photo nearly swimming in the dragon’s gold.

“I’m Scrooge McBaggins. It’s about a million pieces. It’s the biggest pile of gold I’ve ever seen! Well, obviously – I’m not used to hanging out in big piles of gold! They’re all fake, obviously, but it was a big eff-off pile of gold made it very hard to walk on.”

Benedict Cumberbatch, who stars with Freeman on the BBC hit series “Sherlock,” voices Smaug the Terrible, but doesn’t get to reunite with his co-star face-to-face for “Hobbit.”

Benedict Cumberbatch Left Stunned After Hapless Paps Mistake His Niece For A Mystery Date! (E.)

'Star Trek Into Darkness' star Benedict Cumberbatch was left shocked when eager paps mistook his neice for a new mystery date!

The star of Sherlock spoke out on the error to the Associated Press, explaining "I went out with my niece, who is my PA Emily, and we got papped to the point that I couldn't actually see and I had to put my head down and just blink a couple of times."

"I was trying to get in the car with her and so immediately they presume, 'Ah, beautiful blonde...'"

Benedict's real concern was for his young niece though as he added "poor girl, she's never experienced that before. I've never experienced that. (There was) like 15 of them hanging off the bonnet of the car."

From 'Sherlock' To 'Star Trek' For Cumberbatch (NPR)

LONDON (AP) — Benedict Cumberbatch has had a busy 24 hours.

The British actor was nominated for a Golden Globe, chased by the paparazzi in London and unveiled the first nine minutes of the new "Star Trek" movie Friday.

At a special IMAX presentation of the footage in London, Cumberbatch's menacing character John Harrison was introduced at the beginning of the much-anticipated "Star Trek Into Darkness."

The sequel kicks off at a fast pace, with Captain Kirk's trademark quips, a volcano erupting and Spock in grave danger during a mission to save a planet.

Cumberbatch was not allowed to reveal much about the plot, but the 36-year-old did admit that he auditioned for the role of Harrison — who he describes as "a phenomenal one-man weapon of mass destruction" — on an iPhone in his friend's kitchen.

Fans wanting to see the footage can catch it in front of selected IMAX 3D screenings worldwide of "The Hobbit," beginning Friday.

"Star Trek Into Darkness," directed by J.J. Abrams, opens next May.

Benedict Cumberbatch appears on first Star Trek Into Darkness poster (RADIO TIMES)

The film may not be released until 17 May 2013, but the Star Trek Into Darkness publicity machine is beginning to move into full swing as the first poster for JJ Abrams's much-anticipated sci-fi sequel has been unveiled.

Featuring a crumbling cityscape, the poster appears to show the film’s as-yet-unnamed antagonist, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, striding forth into a world of destruction.

Although detailed plot points are still being kept largely under wraps for the film, a short synopsis released by the production last week described Cumberbatch’s villainous character as “a one-man weapon of mass destruction”.  From the looks of the poster, that doesn’t appear to be hyperbole.
