Tom Hardy Tops List Of 2012's Biggest Movie Stars (CINEMA BLEND)

Who were the biggest stars of 2012? Well, a lot of that depends on what your definition of “biggest” would be. 

Few people could argue that they had a bigger year than Jennifer Lawrence, who had one smash hit in The Hunger Games and is closing off the year with Oscar buzz for her performance in David O. Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook. At the same time, Kristen Stewart closed off her massive Twilight franchise with Breaking Dawn: Part 2, had a summer hit with Snow White and the Huntsman, generated a few critical raves for On the Road and even notched her own tabloid scandal thanks to an ill-timed kiss with her Huntsman director. 

Both ladies make a new list released by IMDB, which tallied its STARmeter rankings for the year to simply see which celebrities marked the most page views. Critical assessments and box-office numbers weren’t important. This was just cyber-interest generated by IMDB users, and their No. 1 selection – Tom Hardy – was somewhat surprising to me.

First the "Breaking Dawn" star is cheated on, and his philandering girlfriend issues a lackluster apology to the star via public announcement.

If you’ve ever followed the Pattinson/Stewart relationship, you know exactly how much the poor boy loves airing his yummy personal laundry to the public.

So when rumors swirled that the sad-faced, cuckolded actor had high-tailed it back to mother England to lick his wounds, people clucked and shook their head and baked the poor creature a casserole, because he’ll probably need some comfort food in his time of need.

Well, it’s looking like there’s a little more to the story than that.

Apparently, while Pattinson was relaxing in England, ye olde U-Haul was driving on up to the mansion shared by Pattinson and his “Snow White and the Huntsman” ex. And it wasn’t Pattinson’s bongs and hair mousse that were getting packed on out.

Since Pattinson owns the home the two were shacking up in, the sexy vampire has apparently decided that, rather than run off and admit defeat, the best course of action is to evict the pasty actress from his property.

And, true English gentleman that he is, not only did he force the sullen-faced lady to gather her stuff and move along, he reportedly had her car towed out of their driveway and deposited unceremoniously across from a McDonalds.

Just in case she wasn’t taking the hint.

The Bottom Line

Strikingly designed and cast makeover of the children's tale into a straight-line, romance-free action odyssey.

A bold rethinking of a familiar old story and striking design elements are undercut by a draggy mid-section and undeveloped characters in Snow White and the Huntsman. After the campy family farce of Mirror, Mirror, this second revisionist take of the year on the 19th century fairy tale strides out deadly serious and in full armor, not to mention with more costume changes for Charlize Theron than a Lady Gaga concert. Designed to appeal to teen and young adult girls and guys, this muscular PG-13-rated action adventure conspicuously lacks romance but should get a good box office ride on the shoulders of stars Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth.

The teeing up is dramatic, to say the least, giving a swift and dire account of the malevolent usurpation of the throne of a rugged waterfront kingdom by Ravenna (Theron), a stunning blonde who infiltrates from enemy territory, bewitches the widowed monarch and dispatches him on their wedding night. The king's daughter is kept prisoner in a high tower until her maturity, at which point the queen's mirror, in this case a giant golden plate that morphs into a molten statue, informs her that the status of fairest in the land has shifted to Snow White (Stewart), who represents the queen's greatest threat as well as her salvation.

One the rise for 2012: Domhnall Gleeson and others (INDIEWIRE)

It's hard to know who qualifies for a list like this, but we wanted to lean towards new faces, rather than picking out names you've likely been hearing a lot about recently. Domhnall Gleeson

Having a famous actor for a dad might help open a few doors, but there's plenty of celebrity offspring who never managed to make it last, let alone generate the kind of excitement that Domhnall Gleeson is whisking up these days.

The son of Irish character actor favorite Brendan Gleeson (and brother of Brian Gleeson, who's playing one of the dwarves in "Snow White and the Huntsman"), spell-check nemesis Domhnall starred alongside his father in "Studs" and Martin McDonagh's Oscar-winning short "Six Shooter" before picking up a Tony nomination at 23 for his Broadway role in McDonagh's "The Lieutenant of Inishmore."

New Images From Prometheus, The Hobbit, Bourne Legacy and more (Spin off, On line)

While USA Today has already provided us with a new image from Marvel’s The Avengers, the newspaper also has as part of its 2012 preview revealed stills from several more movies — including a first look at Jeremy Renner in The Bourne Legacy.


Jeremy Renner stars as Aaron Cross in The Bourne Legacy, Universal Pictures’ spinoff of its lucrative action franchise. Directed by Tony Gilroy, who wrote the previous installments, the movie also stars Rachel Weisz and Edward Norton. It opens Aug. 3.



Disney has released a new image from Pixar’s Brave, which stars Kelly Macdonald as the voice of Merida, a Scottish princess who inadvertently unleashes a curse upon her father’s kingdom. It opens June 22.



We also get a new look at Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, the first part of director Peter Jackson’s two-movie adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved fantasy novel. The film, which also stars Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis and a host of others, opens Dec. 14.



Noomi Rapace looks somewhat perplexed in a new image from Ridley Scott’s much-anticipated sci-fi epic Prometheus. The 20th Century Fox film, which also stars Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba and Charlize Theron, opens June 8.



Universal Pictures provides us with another look at Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen in Snow White in the Huntsman, which also stars Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth. The re-imagining of the classic fairy tale opens June 1.

Oh, the heck with 2011 already; I'm just about to race out to see my fourth movie in 24 hours, and I'm getting a little Over It. So it's interesting to see this survey from Fandango.com (which I found on Deadline.com), in which thousands of moviegoers were asked to name their most anticipated films of 2012.

What about you?

(I am waiting for Superman, The Hobbit, Les Miserable, and ANNA KARENINA already.  Matthew Macfadyen and Keira Knightley together again!!!   Who cares about Spiderman?)
