8 Times Tom Hiddleston & Benedict Cumberbatch Had the Cutest Friendship

BUSTLE

4 HOURS AGO ENTERTAINMENT

What’s more beautiful than two supportive male best friends? Well, two really attractive male best friends who also happen to be English and extremely talented. Yup, that’s about as awesome as a best friend coupling as you can get and Tom Hiddleston and Benedict Cumberbatch have all of those things. Actually, I can go on and on about this lovely pair, and as a Bustle reader, I’m sure you’ve noticed we kind of have a massive crush on both of them. What’s not to love? I took it upon myself to answer this question in the best way I could, by recounting the cutest Tom Hiddleston and Benedict Cumberbatch friendship moments over the past four years, all while giving me complete license to gush at their cuteness unabashedly.

Since meeting on the set of the epic film War Horse in 2010, they began a friendship that spawned one of the largest and fervid fan bases of recent years. It is not an easy competition in the Internet fangirl world, but the combined charm and beauty of these two men made it look so easy. Earlier this month, Cumberbatch was name Tumblr’s “most reblogged actor of 2014” for the second year in a row, and I venture to say that his boy Hiddleston was not too far behind. There is a treasure trove of beautiful friendship moments these two have shared with the world and here are just a few to set your hearts ablaze once more.

Here's How Tom Hiddleston Responded After Finding Out He Got the Part as Loki in 'The Avengers"

CELEBUZZ
POSTED 2 DAYS AGO   •   BY KENDALL FISHER

tom hiddleston animated GIF

To say Tom Hiddleston was excited about receiving the role as Loki in The Avengers is a complete understatement... The dude was legitimately stoked.

And in the new book Joss Whedon: The Biography, we have the absolute pleasure of reading the incredibly nerdy yet oh-so-adorable Thank You letter Hiddleston wrote to the director/screenwriter, divulging his extreme excitement over the role. (It will likely make you fall in love with him all over again).  Enjoy!

Joss,
I am so excited I can hardly speak.

The first time I read it I grabbed at it like Charlie Bucket snatching for a golden ticket somewhere behind the chocolate in the wrapper of a Wonka Bar. I didn't know where to start. Like a classic actor I jumped in looking for LOKI on every page, jumping back and forth, reading words in no particular order, utterances imprinting themselves like flash-cuts of newspaper headlines in my mind: “real menace”; “field of obeisance”; “discontented, nothing is enough”; “his smile is nothing but a glimpse of his skull”; “Puny god” …

… Thank you for writing me my Hans Gruber. But a Hans Gruber with super-magic powers. As played by James Mason … It's high operatic villainy alongside detached throwaway tongue-in-cheek; plus the “real menace” and his closely guarded suitcase of pain. It's grand and epic and majestic and poetic and lyrical and wicked and rich and badass and might possibly be the most gloriously fun part I've ever stared down the barrel of playing. It is just so juicy.

I love how throughout you continue to put Loki on some kind of pedestal of regal magnificence and then consistently tear him down. He gets battered, punched, blasted, side-swiped, roared at, sent tumbling on his back, and every time he gets back up smiling, wickedly, never for a second losing his eloquence, style, wit, self-aggrandisement or grandeur, and you never send him up or deny him his real intelligence…. That he loves to make an entrance; that he has a taste for the grand gesture, the big speech, the spectacle. I might be biased, but I do feel as though you have written me the coolest part.

… But really I'm just sending you a transatlantic shout-out and fist-bump, things that traditionally British actors probably don't do. It's epic.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston linked to new movie Journey's End

RADIO TIMES
Ben Dowell
4:30 PM, 01 June 2014

Benedict Cumberbatch is being linked to a starring role in a proposed new film set in the trenches of the First World War.

The Sherlock star is tipped to play the lead role of the hero Captain Stanhope in a new film based on R.C Sherriff's 1928 play about a group of officers in the last year of the conflict.

In the play Stanhope is a father figure to his men but also reflects bitterly about the idiocy of war. Hiddleston is also said to be a candidate for the new film, which has not been formally financed but looks to have a good chance to be made.

According to the Sunday Times, the Fluidity Films project has been in abeyance for a number of years because of complications surrounding a series of deals stretching back to 1929. A feature film version, banned by the Nazis in 1933, was made in 1930 and a 1988 television adaptation starred Jeremy Northam.

However a letter from Prince Andrew to Warner Bros has rekindled interest in the new project, the paper reported, with the member of the Royal Family asking the head of Warner Bros UK Josh Berger to reconsider reclaiming the rights to the project and the story which the Prince said was of significance to the UK as we reach the war's 100th anniversary.

Which Poem Makes Tom Hiddleston Cry? This One…

BBC AMERICA
By Fraser McAlpine | Posted on April 11th, 2014

Tom’s choice is a poem called Love After Love by Derek Walcott, and according to the extract published in Marie Claire, he has this to say about it:

“I read this poem often. Once a month at least. In the madness and mayhem of modern life, where every man seems committed to an endless search for approval and esteem of his fellows and peers, no matter what the cost, this poem reminds me of a basic truth: that we are, as we are, ‘enough.’

“Most of us are motivated deep down by a sense of insufficiency, a need to be better, stronger, faster; to work harder; to be more committed, more kind, more self-sufficient, more successful. We are driven be a sense that we are not, as we are, ‘enough.’ But this short poem by Derek Walcott is like a declaration of unconditional love. It’s like the embrace of an old friend. We are each of us whole, perfectly imperfect, enough.”

Love After Love

The time will come
when, with elation,
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror,
and each will smile at the other’s welcome,
and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you

all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,

the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.

WATCH: Benedict Cumberbatch On Theater, Tom Hiddleston And Peter O’Toole

You can’t just ask Benedict Cumberbatch a couple of quick questions, especially on a topic such as the continued popularity of British theater, grab a couple of soundbites and waltz off.

Here’s a video taken a few days ago by Red Carpet News TV, at the first anniversary party for London’s Park Theatre.

You will notice he is un-swerved from his dedication to talking total inspirational sense about the dramatic arts by an attempted videobombing, and the clear presence of a party in the background.

And he draws a firm parallel between his early career and that of Tom Hiddleston, pointing out they both got started in relatively low-key theatrical productions—he playing Shakespeare in the open air in Regent’s Park, Tom in Cheek By Jowl productions—but treating them with the reverence and respect a paying audience deserved.

‘He’s My BFF’: Tom Hiddleston Talks Benedict Cumberbatch

SHOW BIZ SPY
April 25, 2014

TOM Hiddleston insists there was no hard feelings between himself and Benedict Cumberbatch when he took the part in Crimson Peak after the Sherlock star dropped out.

Hiddletston replaced Cumberbatch in the upcoming horror movie, directed by Guillermo Del Toro, and Tom is adamant his secretive pal didn’t mind.

“He’s one of my best friends. It’s as simple as that,” Hiddleston said of Cumberbatch. They met in 2010, playing officers in Steven Spielberg’s War Horse.

“It’s a great script and I’ve been a fan of Guillermo del Toro forever. I think he’s amazing"

Benedict Cumberbatch: ice driving in Finland (High Life Article)

HIGH LIFE
Benedict Cumberbatch wraps up in snowy Finland
Joe Windsor-Williams for High Life magazine
April 2014

Oh, just Benedict Cumberbatch hanging out in the snow in Finland.

Benedict Cumberbatch ditches his trademark detective's coat for thermals as he dares to cheat death driving on ice in central Finland. Gavin Green joins him

The frozen lake we're standing on is speaking to us. It's a groaning, creaking voice, almost of pain, from way down deep in the icy abyss. 'Listen to that,' says Benedict Cumberbatch, dressed in a thick fur-collared jacket, black salopettes, chunky blue scarf, big snow boots, thick gloves and woolly hat. He looks more Scott of the Antarctic than Sherlock Holmes of Baker Street. 'It sounds absolutely magical,' he says, concentrating hard on the sound of the ice moaning beneath us, around us. There is no other sound. It's too cold for birds or people or animals, too isolated for traffic.

'The ice is quite solid, I assume?' asks Benedict, articulating what we're all thinking. We're about to power around this frozen lake in a range of Jaguar sports cars and nobody wants their F-Type to turn submarine. 'Quite solid,' says our Finnish instructor, Tomi. He shows us a contraption that measures ice thickness. 'It's 35cm,' he says reassuringly. (That's just over a foot.) 'Although maybe less thick in places.' (An unhelpful postscript.)

We're in southern central Finland taking part in a Jaguar winter-driving course. Alongside me is probably the biggest British TV or film star since Anthony Hopkins made Hannibal a cannibal or Colin Firth performed his royal stammer. In excess of 16 million Brits watched Benedict reappear as Sherlock Holmes for his third series on BBC1, making it the most-watched — and certainly best-loved — British TV drama in over a decade.

He's tall (6ft), ramrod straight, just 37, slim (though trying to bulk up for his next part as a mercenary in Blood Mountain), has a blemish-free and stubble-free complexion, ice-blue eyes and swept-back auburn brown hair — which was dyed black for Sherlock, blond for Julian Assange in The Fifth Estate.

It was Sherlock, of course, that made him a star. Since that first series in 2010, it's been nonstop. 'I've played so many characters so fast,' he tells me. 'I had a bank holiday weekend to transfer from Sherlock Holmes into Christopher Tietjens [in Parade's End].'

On the frozen lake, driving a fast car, Benedict applies himself with the customary concentration of Sherlock solving a murder mystery. 'I do take challenges seriously,' he admits. Tomi and a former Finnish female rally champion, Minna ('She's the fastest driver here,' says Tomi) show him how to steer, how to brake and how to accelerate, to get the Jaguar to dance on ice.

His enthusiasm and determination are as clear as the bright Arctic light. At first, he spins (we all do). Later, after some practice, he's powering and pirouetting around the Finnish ice lake, more Senna than Sherlock.

Cumberbatch's intensity comes as no surprise. You have to be committed and laser-focused, I guess, if you're going to morph convincingly from Sherlock Holmes to Stephen Hawking, from Vincent van Gogh to Julian Assange, from Frankenstein and the monster to Smaug the Dragon. He's been an aristocratic WWI army officer (in Parade's End and War Horse — he says he has the face for it), a secret agent (in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), a slave owner (12 Years a Slave) and a Star Trek arch-villain. He's been Pitt the Younger and Young Rumpole. He's even been on Sesame Street — 'one of the best fun things I've ever done'.

EastEnders' Danny Dyer: 'I get stereotyped unlike posh boy Cumberbatch'

DIGITAL SPY
By Tom Eames

Benedict Cumberbatch

Danny Dyer has hit out at "snobbery" within showbiz circles and said that he struggles with "playing the game".

The EastEnders actor revealed that he feels stars such as Benedict Cumberbatch are taken more seriously than him, despite his acting background.

He told Woman magazine: "You've got actors like Benedict Cumberbatch - a great actor, but he's a posh boy playing posh boys. He does it well, and he doesn't get mocked for that.

"I play working class people, and I get mocked for it. I'm stereotyped, he's not. I've done plays at the National Theatre, come off stage and gone into the bar and I ain't got nothing in common with those people.

"When it comes to playing the game, I'm rubbish. The middle-class actors are better prepped at working the system, because they've got more in common with the decision makers."

Dyer, who plays Queen Vic landlord Mick Carter in EastEnders, also revealed that the show's bosses have asked him to tone down his remarks on Twitter now that he is working for the BBC.

By Danny Walker

BBC2's Top Gear has welcomed a further 200,000 viewers on Sunday and sees the series reach a 5.5 million average.

According to reported viewing figures the motoring series had 20.2% of the audience at 8pm.

BBC One's Call the Midwife, which was on at the same time, attracted 8.77 million, but that was down nearly 200k from last week.

Hosts Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond may have Thor and War Horse star Tom Hiddleston to thank for the rise as he took to their Reasonably Priced Car challenge.

Episode 2 of series 21 also saw Hammond got behind the wheel of the mid-engined Alfa Romeo 4C on the shores of Lake Como in Italy.

TOM HIDDLESTON'S HOLLYWOOD'S NEXT BIG HEARTTHROB, HERE'S WHY YOU SHOULD LOVE HIM

Vittorio Zunino Celotto/Getty Images Entertainment/Getty Images

BUSTLE
By Alanna Bennett  @alannabennett 14 hours ago

Tom Hiddleston is made of magic. You know that, I know that, the world knows that. Much of this is being brought to the surface right now because of his recent press tour for Thor: The Dark World. And I’m pretty convinced it was orchestrated by some ancient benevolent gods specifically to make up for some of the other crap that goes down in the universe. This includes many a “Hey look at my new movie!” interview, every single one of which has left us fangirl!weeping in the general directions of our computer screens as we type all-caps phrases like “I JUST CAN’T” and “HAVE YOU SEEN??!”

The latest in these was an interview with Entertainment Weekly, in which he is asked to respond to the popularity of Loki — and in which Loki is referred to as a “sexy beast”:

That’s the first time anyone has ever used that phrase about Loki. It’s fascinating isn’t it? I don’t know because it’s not a part of the conscious construction. I take relish in playing him. I think there’s a physical self-possession about him, a self-acceptance. Of course I’ve been very exacting about his physicality. You know, I was born with very blonde, curly hair, and a mixture of Scottish and English genes, and my complexion is very ruddy and healthy. In making him with this raven black hair and blanching my face of all color, it changes my features. Suddenly my blue eyes look a lot bluer, which lends a severity to my face. And even my own smile has a distorted menace to it. Whatever comes through me naturally is distorted. It’s almost like a filter on a light.

While Loki’s particular tortured sexiness is indeed quite notable, though, it is only a small part of the still-burgeoning wonderfulness that is Tom “Hiddles” Hiddleston. Because Tom Hiddleston is already making fanpeople sob and ovaries activate, but his fandom, like that of Benedict Cumberbatch, is still mainly relegated to the Internet. We sense that’s about to change. So let’s explore Hiddles, shall we?*

Here are some of the many reasons we love him so far:

HE’S SHAKESPEAREAN

It has been mentioned in multiple interviews that Tom Hiddleston can (and does) quote Hamlet at length. This is evident from his portrayal of Thor’s Loki, as well as from the fact that he got the job from friend/colleague Kenneth Branagh, the most Shakespearean man to ever Shakespeare in a whole lotta years.

Hiddleston has been in stage productions like Othello and onscreen in BBC’s productions of Henry IV and Henry V. He’s also worked extensively with the Donmar Warehouse, where he will be playing the title character in Coriolanus soon. And have you seen the rehearsal photos from that? Because they’re…important.

So important.

Basically: He’s a thespian to the highest degree, and he will talk about art and language with you all through the day and night.

HE PUTS A HIGH PREMIUM ON COMPASSION

TOM HIDDLESTON: Ryan Gosling Has Nothing On This Guy

LEXI NISITA

Sunday is a great day for self-discovery. And today, you are going to learn something very important about yourself: You're in love! Pop the champagne, call your mom, hire J.Lo to plan the big day, because girl, this is serious. His name is Tom Hiddleston, he's charming, he's British, and he is going to make you swoon.

Not convinced? Are you crazy? It's okay. Let us talk you through your new favorite obsession.

Reason #1: He's really, really ridiculously good-looking. James McAvoy meets Michael Fassbender, with a ginger twist. He's also the only human who can pull off this beard shape without looking totally insufferable.

Reason #2: Loki, of Asgard/Thor fame. The ultimate irresistibly sexy, weirdly-dressed bad boy with better hair than you. There are millions of Tumblrs dedicated to this, which as we all know is the ultimate test of whether or not someone is awesome.

Reason #3: He doesn't take himself too seriously. He's also hilarious, as this genius Josh Horowitz video proves.

Reason #4: He'll help you get over your debilitating cookie obsession.

Reason #5: He will woo you by reciting poetry softly in your ear. And if you're not into that, well, you will be.

THERE'S MORE...

THE HOT HITS
October 11, 2013

Tom Hiddleston is the thinking woman’s crush. So what does the Thor: The Dark World star think of being called a sex symbol?

“All I feel about it, all I know for sure about is, is it is kindling to the fire of ridicule that my sisters will throw at me,” he told thehothits.com.

Tom explained that he finds the title “very very flattering, I feel very honoured” - but he's not afraid to joke around about it.

Maybe all Loki needs is a girlfriend?

“Thor 2: The Dark World” star Tom Hiddleston has spoken out about his supervillain character, saying that he wants to see a romance for Loki.

Speaking to Total Film, Hiddleston said that he wants to see the introduction of Loki’ls comic book love interest the Enchantress and hinted that the idea may have already been pitched to Marvel Studios.

“When I was first reading the comics, the relationship with the Enchantress was one of the really fun things I thought would be good to explore, and may have even pitched it to Kevin Feige at some point,” he said. “Because she is as sneaky and as untrustworthy as he was.

“They basically had a really fantastic and twisted relationship until they both say, ‘You know what? I don’t trust you as far as I can throw you. It’s over.’ Because they keep betraying each other, in a way. So it could be good.” Hiddleston also pointed out that Loki is not a “celibate god,” as he has a child with unlikely mothers.

Tom Hiddleston: Petition For Loki Movie From Marvel Studios Passes 10,000 Signatures

Loki Marvel Studios Panel

COMIC BOOK
By: Scott Johnson on September 10, 2013

Usually when fans start a petition to a movie studio it’s about a controversial casting decision, which they disagree with. However, in the case of Marvel Studios casting Tom Hiddleston as Loki, the exact opposite has occurred.

Even though Loki is a villain and supervillains don’t usually get their own movies, fans want to see a Loki movie so much that they’ve started a petition. The Free Loki petition states: “The character Loki, as portrayed by Tom Hiddleston in the films ‘Thor,’ ‘Thor 2,’ and ‘The Avengers’ (2012), has become one of the most recognizable and cherished film characters in recent years. Hence, we respectfully yet strongly request Marvel put into action a full-length feature film production based on the Marvel character Loki portrayed by Tom Hiddleston.”

Tom Hiddleston Received Permission From Benedict Cumberbatch To Take Role In 'Crimson Peak'

HUFFINGTON POST
Posted: 09/06/2013 6:01 pm EDT  |  Updated: 09/06/2013 6:02 pm EDT

On Friday it was announced that Tom Hiddleston would replace Benedict Cumberbatch in Guillermo del Toro's haunted house thriller "Crimson Peak." According to Hiddleston, however, the deal came with the permission of the film's former star.

"The thing is we're really good friends, and as soon as Guillermo called, I called Benedict and I said this is happening, and he was like, 'Amazing!'" Hiddleston told BuzzFeed's Jordan Zakarin in an interview at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday. "So, I had his blessing."

Hiddleston and Cumberbatch go back a long way -- not just because each have an army of fans supporting them on the internet. The pair co-starred together in "War Horse," and engaged in a mutual admiration society during the film's press tour.
