Richard Armitage: Crucible is 'a full-body experience'

BBC NEWS
By Tim Masters
Arts and entertainment correspondent, BBC News
July 3, 2014

Richard Armitage

After 12 years away from the stage, making his name in Spooks and The Hobbit, Richard Armitage is back in a "visceral" new production of Arthur Miller's The Crucible at the Old Vic.

Three days before starting rehearsals, Armitage drove from his home in New York to Danvers, Massachusetts,

Originally known as Salem Village, Danvers is most associated with the famous witch trials of 1692 - the inspiration for Miller's classic play that draws parallels with McCarthy's anti-communist investigations in postwar America.

Armitage, in his dressing room before a preview performance at the Old Vic, explains that the trip was useful preparation for his role as the Puritan tragic hero John Proctor.

"I got this sense that they were real people who had experienced this terrible contagion. These were a tough frontier people who had very little concept of what was beyond their small realm. Because of their staunch religious nature they truly believed it was the Devil that would come for them."

Armitage first encountered Proctor when he played a scene from The Crucible at drama school some 20 years ago.

"I had no idea it was a three-hour 'opera'... it resonates now and it will resonate in 10 years."

The Crucible, directed by Yael Farber, is the latest play to be presented in the round at the Old Vic.

To be or not to be, Watson? Benedict Cumberbatch swaps Sherlock for Shakespeare

Cue Cumberbatch: Benedict Cumberbatch will take the stage as Hamlet next year

MAIL ON LINE
Baz Bamigboye
September 19, 2013

Benedict Cumberbatch is going from Sherlock to Shakespeare.

The award-winning actor will play Hamlet, the troubled Danish prince, on the London stage in the autumn of 2014.

Cumberbatch joins the pantheon of modern Hamlets who have included Ben Whishaw, Jude Law, Simon Russell Beale, Mark Rylance, David Tennant and John Simm.

Questioned several years ago on what stage role he yearned to play, Cumberbatch instantly responded: ‘Hamlet, obviously.’

The actor was sipping a Grey Goose cocktail at a party held in Toronto’s Soho House following the world premiere of The Fifth Estate at the Toronto International Film Festival when he let slip to me that he was actively pursuing a return to the theatre, following his role-swapping stint at the National in Danny Boyle’s production of Frankenstein back in 2011.

He wouldn’t tell me more, but after a process of elimination I hit upon Hamlet and the rumour led me, eventually, to the indefatigable producer Sonia Friedman, who confirmed that she was in ‘active discussions’ with Cumberbatch and celebrated director Lyndsey Turner.

Ms Turner directed Posh at the Royal Court and the current Almeida Theatre smash Chimerica, now playing to packed houses at the Harold Pinter Theatre.

Pressed further, Ms Friedman added: ‘We’re in advanced discussions with Benedict Cumberbatch about playing Hamlet, and we’re at the stage of sorting out schedules concerning him and the director Lyndsey Turner. Key to those talks is West End theatre availability, or availability of a non-traditional theatre space to present the play.’

Cumberbatch is a hot property right now, and with good reason. His ability to deliver astute, decisive performances — demonstrated in the masterpiece that is Twelve Years A Slave, which I caught at the Telluride Film Festival; and in August: Osage County and The Fifth Estate, which I saw in Toronto — may bring him awards season attention.

Cumberbatch recently completed the third series of Sherlock, which BBC1 will broadcast next year. And he has just started filming The Imitation Game, in which he portrays tortured World War II computer genius Alan Turing, opposite Keira Knightley (so delightful in new movie Can A Song Save Your Life?).

To be, or not to be Hamlet? There seems no question that in a year’s time Cumberbatch will be uttering the sweet prince’s famous lines on a stage somewhere in London.

Rupert Grint and Brendan Coyle Collaborate On Stage in West End Production

Rupert Grint makes his stage debut opposite Brendan Coyle. (AP)

BBC AMERICA
By Leah Rozen | Posted on July 29th, 2013

The worlds of Harry Potter and Downton Abbey will collide this fall when Rupert Grint and Brendan Coyle appear together on the West End stage in a London revival of Mojo, a crime drama about petty crooks and gangsters.

If you’re thinking about booking tickets and hopping a plane across the Atlantic, the just announced production will begin performances at the Harold Pinter Theater on Oct. 26.

Grint, 24, who played Ron Weasley in eight Harry Potter films, will be making his stage debut. Coyle, who portrays valet John Bates on Downton, is a veteran of the London stage.

Mojo, written by Jez Butterworth, was first staged at the Royal Court Theater in London in 1995. This new revival will costar Ben Whishaw (BBC America’s The Hour and Skyfall) and Daniel Mays (Made in Dagenham). Ian Rickson, who directed the original production, will again be directing.

It was Rickson’s idea to cast Grint. “I’d seen the Potter films with my daughter and always thought Rupert was truthful as Ron Weasley,” Rickson told entertainment columnist Baz Bamigboye of the Daily Mail. “There’s something ordinary and centered about him, and in this world of Mojo you want that grittiness.”

Rupert Grint, Brendan Coyle, Ben Whishaw and Daniel Mays star in Mojo revival

Ian Rickson's all-star production at the Harold Pinter Theatre from 26 October

WHAT'S ON STAGE

As previously rumoured, Harry Potter star Rupert Grint will make his stage debut in a revival of Jez Butterworth's play Mojo later this year.

According to the Daily Mail, Grint will star alongside Brendan Coyle (Downton Abbey), Ben Whishaw (Skyfall, Hamlet) and Daniel Mays (Trelawny of the Wells, Mrs Biggs) in the production.

Brendan Coyle will return to the stage after a gap due to his Downton Abbey commitments. An accomplished stage actor, he won an Olivier Award in 1999 for Conor McPherson's The Weir (the Donmar's recent revival of which is transferring  to the West End in January).

Ben Whishaw rose to prominence after starring in Trevor Nunn's acclaimed Old Vic production of Hamlet directly out of drama school. He has since appeared on stage in Mike Bartlett's Cock at the Royal Court and, most recently, Peter and Alice opposite Judi Dench in the West End.

Dame Judi Dench takes pals to meet the wildlife lover she could wed (TELEGRAPH) By Richard Eden7:22AM BST 30 Jun 2013

Dame Judi Dench takes pals to meet the wildlife lover she could wed

Dame Judi Dench's 30-year marriage to Michael Williams was just as successful in real life as it was on screen in the hit Eighties sitcom A Fine Romance. Friends of the 78-year-old actress say she may now be ready for a second wedding.

Dame Judi has been courting David Mills, 70, a conservationist, for three years. This week, she is to take her fellow stars of the recent West End play Peter and Alice on a visit to the British Wildlife Centre, which Mills runs.

“I am going to go with the rest of the Peter and Alice cast,” Ben Whishaw tells Mandrake at the Evian Suite at Wimbledon.

“Her partner has a wildlife sanctuary in Surrey, so we are going to visit her there. All of us. It’s not far from where she lives on the Surrey / Sussex border.”

Williams died of lung cancer in 2001 at the age of 65.

Last year, Dame Judi spoke about the macular degeneration that she suffered, for which she has been treated with injections into the eye.

“It was amazing how she carried on stage with her eye problem,” says Whishaw, 32, who played Q to Dench’s M in the James Bond film Skyfall. “ You would never know that she had it, and she never talked about it. “She is such a trouper and professional.”

Matthew Macfadyen: Jeeves and Wooster to take to West End stage in Perfect Nonsense (GUARDIAN) Mark Brown, arts correspondent

There are the books of course, TV series in the sixties and nineties, radio adaptations and a musical take from Andrew Lloyd Webber but, dash it, never a stage play featuring one of the greatest comedy double acts ever conceived.

On Monday a corrective to that will be announced. PG Wodehouse's Jeeves and Wooster are finally coming to the West End in a new play starring Stephen Mangan as the endearingly idiotic Bertie and Matthew Macfadyen as his brilliant, unflappable butler.

Mangan, recently seen in the BBC2 sitcom Episodes, said he was "ridiculously excited" at the prospect, although he admitted he had not read any of the Wodehouse books before being offered the role.

"I always meant to," he told the Guardian. "Everyone tells you how funny they are, but for some reason I never got round to him. They gave me the script, I started reading some books and I've been ploughing through them since then. It's like crack cocaine.

"I'm quite pleased with myself for holding out for so long because it means I've got them all in my head. I don't think anyone else can quite coin a sentence with such invention and wit. Wit almost doesn't seem a big enough word for it. The sheer brilliance of the writing almost takes your breath away."

The play, called Perfect Nonsense, by the brothers Robert and David Goodale, is largely based on Wodehouse's 1938 book The Code of the Woosters, described by some critics as his best work.

The play will open at the Duke of York's Theatre on 30 October after short runs at Richmond Theatre and the Brighton Theatre Royal.

Michael Fassbender, Justin Kurzel attached to new version of Macbeth, from the producers of The King’s Speech. (SCREEN DAILY)

Michael Fassbender is attached to play Macbeth in a new version of Shakespeare’s classic, which will be produced by The King’s Speech and Shame producers See Saw.

Snowtown director Justin Kurzel is attached to direct the film, which is expected to shoot later this year. Writers are Todd Louiso and Jacob Koskoff.

The script has been one of the most in-demand ahead of the Cannes Film Festival with a number of sales outfits keen to work on the film.

Development and production backing on the UK-Australian co-production comes from Film4.

The part of Lady Macbeth is currently being cast and talks are underway with at least one Hollywood leading actress.

The production sees Fassbender reunited with Shame producers Iain Canning and Emile Sherman and Film4, with whom the actor worked on Hunger, Shame and the upcoming Frank.

The new take on Shakespeare’s classic - about a ruthlessly ambitious Scottish lord who siezes the throne with the help of his scheming wife and three witches - is set in the 11th century and in the original language.

The script is understood to be a visceral approach to the story including significant battle scenes.

The play has been recently staged in London’s West End starring James McAvoy, who was nominated for an Olivier Award for his turn. Famous film versions include Roman Polanski’s 1971 version and Orson Welles’ from 1948.

James McAvoy's Tartan Army is set to invade Whitehall in new production of Macbeth By BAZ BAMIGBOYE (MAIL ON LINE)

James McAvoy will play Macbeth for a new West End  theatre company run by Jamie Lloyd.

The actor will portray the Scottish king in a radical production to be played in the round in a newly  configured Trafalgar Studio in  Whitehall to be known as Traf Transformed.

Lloyd will produce a series of four plays in the new space with designer Soutra Gilmour, which is being backed by the Ambassador Theatre Group.

Macbeth will run at Traf Transformed from February 9 until  April 27.

These days it would seem that everyone wants to be a Thane. After McAvoy ends his run, Kenneth Branagh and director Rob Ashford will essay their interpretation at the Manchester International Festival in July.

McAvoy, 33, told me that he wanted to do it ‘before I get too old’.

I mentioned that Patrick Stewart was in his 60s when he did Macbeth in Chichester and Branagh is middle-aged.

Downton Abbey star, Laura Carmichael, feels sorry for legendary director Sir Peter Hall after he ruins her West End début by heckling! November 8th, 2012 by Anna Howell. (UNREALITY PRIMETIME)

November 8th, 2012 by Anna Howell.

Downton Abbey star, Laura Carmichael admits that not only feeling embarrassed after legendary theatre director, Sir Peter Hall heckled her début West End performance, but also feels “really bad” for him too!

Laura, who plays Lady Edith Crawley in the award-winning ITV period drama, was staring in Uncle Vanya at the Vaudeville Theatre in London’s West End, when Sir Peter Hall, who was in the audience, reportedly shouted ‘stop’ during the final scene, causing those nearby him to miss the ending.

As mortifying as being heckled by such a theatre giant on your first night performance would be, Laura has forgiven Sir Peter according her friend and Downton co-star, Joanne Froggatt.

Meanwhile Sir Peter, who admits to bellowing “stop, stop, stop” from his seat in the third row of the stalls during Laura’s performance, has revealed that he has written to Laura to apologise for his actions, despite saying at the time: “It doesn’t work and you don’t work. It is not good enough. I could be at home watching television.”

According to the publication, Sir Peter has now apologised for his actions, and tried to excuse himself with age, adding: “I am mortified that I unintentionally disrupted the final scene,” he said. “I enjoyed the evening, and her performance, immensely and I cannot stress too strongly that my remarks were in no way directed at her or the production.

“Being rather aged, I dropped off for a moment and, on being woken by my wife, I was briefly disorientated.

Judi Dench heads to West End and cygnets take on Swan Lake Judi Dench, Daniel Radcliffe and Jude Law set for West End stage, Max Stafford-Clark opens up rehearsals and a French ballet company hatches a plan for Swan Lake with real swans Share 0 Email Alistair Smith guardian.co.uk, Friday 15 June 2012 09.52 EDT

A veritable galaxy of stars are lining up to tread West End (and off-West End) boards in the coming months, with a slew of star-led shows announced. Rowan Atkinson, most recently seen on stage as Fagin in the musical Oliver!, will be performing in his first play in more than 20 years when he appears in a revival of Quartermaine's Terms by Simon Gray. Meanwhile, Sheridan Smith – fresh from critical acclaim for a run of theatrical turns – will take on the title role in Hedda Gabler at London's Old Vic. Another meaty female role is in the offing – for Anna Friel, who will appear as Yelena opposite Ken Stott as Uncle Vanya and with Samuel West as Astrov. And, in north London, Rupert Everett and Freddie Fox are lined up to star in Judas Kiss at the Hampstead Theatre: the play tells the story of Oscar Wilde's relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas.

Not to be outdone, former Donmar Warehouse boss Michael Grandage has just announced a 15-month West End season launching this December, spanning five plays and featuring stars including Judi Dench, Daniel Radcliffe, Simon Russell Beale, David Walliams, Jude Law and Sheridan Smith again. If that weren't impressive enough, 100,000 tickets will be available at the distinctly un-starry price of £10.

Helen Mirren to play Queen Elizabeth again Jun 11, 2012, 12:01 GMT (M & C)

The 66-year-old has already portrayed the British monarch three times but has now been approached to take on the role in a new West End play.

Peter Morgan, who also wrote 'The Queen' for which Helen won an Oscar wants her to once again portray the royal in the show which will be directed by Stephen Daldry.

Morgan told the Sunday Times: 'There's this mystique and it's that which I find fascinating.'

The production is due to be staged at the start of next year.

Helen is a huge fan of Queen Elizabeth and says she is actually 'charming and funny' and is nothing like her serious public persona.

Buyers make West End wait London sees shift in purchasing patterns By DAVID BENEDICT (VARIETY)

London box office figures for individual shows remain unpublished, but those seeking a barometer of the current state of the West End need look no further than "Absent Friends" and "Hay Fever."

Both classic British comedies opened last month within two weeks of each other in midsize houses to largely ecstatic reviews. The surprise is that, since opening, both shows have continued to offer major discounts and ticketing deals, suggesting box office has not been as robust as was hoped. Playful Prods.'

Matthew Byam Shaw, one of the lead producers on "Hay Fever," is in a confident mood after a major marketing spend and what he reports is a pickup in sales -- but he acknowledges the going was slower than anticipated. "After those reviews, you would have expected the box office to roar," he says. "But we didn't get the lift we'd hoped for." It's indicative, he says, of a shift in London's booking patterns: "Audiences for plays used to book way in advance. Those audiences are still coming, but their decision to buy is being made much later."

The phenomenon is trans-Atlantic, with Broadway producers in recent years also confronted by consumers who buy tickets closer and closer to the performance date. The trend is likely attributable to a number of factors, including the instant ease of Internet sales and the increasing profile of discounted tickets, for which some buyers might be holding out.

Byam Shaw points to the stage version of "The King's Speech," which opens in town next week following a critically applauded U.K. tour. "We took a ton of money in Newcastle, but people were only booking four days ahead," he says.
