Broadchurch named best TV show of 2013 by Radio Times critics

ITV crime drama Broadchurch has been named the best TV show of 2013 by Radio Times critics.

Starring David Tennant and Olivia Colman at the head of an ensemble cast, the drama follows the story of a police investigation into the murder of a schoolboy in a small Dorset coastal town.  Described by the series creator Chris Chibnall as "a labour of love", the beautifully crafted whodunit captured the imagination of the nation as almost every character became a suspect across eight rollercoaster weeks.

Both a critical and popular hit, the show attracted around nine million viewers an episode on ITV - and after being shown on BBC America will be remade for a US audience, with Tennant reprising his starring role as troubled DI Alec Hardy.  A second series of Broadchurch is expected on ITV in 2014.

Last year the critics choice was won by Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman crime drama Sherlock, which returns to television on New Year's Day.

"The death of event TV has been greatly exaggerated," said Tim Glanfield, editor of RadioTimes.com & digital products. "Broadchurch drew the nation into a collective hysteria every Monday night for eight weeks, as who killed Danny Latimer became the talking point in the press, pubs, front rooms and factories up and down the country.

"A brilliant piece of homegrown drama with an exquisite cast of actors, Broadchurch is a fantastic example of British TV at its very best."

Move aside, Louis Lane!

We bet Henry Cavill has wished he could fly around the Earth so fast that he could reverse time, skip his brief fling with Kaley Cuoco, and go back into the arms of Gina Carano.

Now he doesn't have to put on the cape and invent time travel! It looks like the exes are back together!

According to Salt Lake Running Company employee Amanda Theobald, our hunky Man of Steel who came into their store is actually training in Salt Lake City for the Man of Steel sequel, as well as engaging in a romantic sequel with Gina:

“We thought he was a movie star, but we just couldn’t place it. So we asked him when we rang him out. He said he's back to training at Gym Jones for the next movie. He bought two pairs of C-WX tights and a couple pairs of Saucony and Northface shorts. He was with his MMA fighter girlfriend. She helped him pick out some shorts and took care of him more than we did."

"Sherlock" Season 3 Exclusive Photos Hint At Trouble For Television’s Favorite Bromance

PBS and Masterpiece have given BuzzFeed an exclusive look at four images from Season 3 of the British mystery, which returns to Masterpiece on Jan. 19, 2014. Wedding bells!

Confetti explosion! It seems as though John's wedding to Mary (Amanda Abbington) goes off without a hitch, judging from the beaming smiles of the happy bride and groom.

It looks like there’s a chasm between John and Sherlock, and we’re not just talking about the distance on this park bench. I mean, faking your death will do that to a friendship.

And the moment of truth: Can Sherlock make a best man speech at the wedding reception that won’t humiliate John or Mary entirely? Only time will tell…

Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing in First Look at ‘The Imitation Game’ (Photo)

Black Bear Pictures’ drama co-stars Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Mark Strong and Charles Dance

In honor of Alan Turing’s historic Royal Pardon on Tuesday, Black Bear Pictures has released the first official image of Benedict Cumberbatch in “The Imitation Game.”

Showing his personal enthusiasm for the project, producer Teddy Schwarzman sent the still himself as an early Christmas gift rather than a PR firm.

Cumberbatch stars as codebreaker and mathematician Turing, who was prosecuted for being homosexual and eventually committed suicide via cyanide poisoning.

Keira Knightley co-stars alongside Matthew Goode, Mark Strong and Charles Dance. Morten Tyldum (“Headhunters”) directed from Graham Moore’s script, which topped the 2011 Black List.

In addition to producers Teddy Schwarzman, Nora Grossman and Ido Ostrowsky, the project boasts a top notch below-the-line team including Oscar-winning editor William Goldenberg (“Argo”), composer Clint Mansell (“Black Swan”), cinematographer Oscar Faura (“The Impossible”) and production designer Maria Djurkovic (“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”).

Tom Hardy and fiancee Charlotte Riley visit Butterwick Hospice in Stockton

The Northern Echo: Tom Hardy and Charlotte Riley meet Bethany Weatherill, 11, and Play Nurse Sam Clarkson Pics: Sarah Caldecott

Tom Hardy and Charlotte Riley meet Bethany Weatherill, 11, and Play Nurse Sam Clarkson Pics: Sarah Caldecott

IT'S not every day that the North-East is touched by Hollywood stardom.

So when two A-list movie stars dropped in on a local hospice it certainly made for a Christmas to remember.

Film star Tom Hardy and his fiancee, the actress Charlotte Riley, spent more than an hour meeting and chatting with patients and staff when they called in at the Butterwick House Children's Hospice in Stockton, Teesside to hand over a cheque for £24,000.

The London-born star of Batman - The Dark Knight Rises and science fiction thriller Inception, 36, raised the money when he took part in an expedition in Siberia with Miss Riley's uncle, Peter Riley, who has been involved with the Hospice from the outset.

The couple, who met on the set of Wuthering Heights, enjoyed a tour of the hospice and met with 11-year-old patient Bethany Weatherill while in the region for a family Christmas.

Miss Riley, 31, who was born in Grindon, near Stockton and stars with Tom Cruise in the upcoming movie Edge of Tomorrow, said: "It must be really difficult for the families of the people and children who stay at the Hospice as they are all seriously ill, but they must take some consolation from the fact the all the staff are always really happy, friendly and devoted.

‘Downton Abbey’ season 4 Christmas Special review: Daisy’s offer, and did Mary choose?

CARTERMATT
25 December, 2013

Last year, fans of “Downton Abbey” lamented how the Christmas Special basically took whatever Christmas cheer that they had and then threw it in the garbage. For the first 98% of it, all seemed well; then, Matthew died and the world fell apart for Mary.

This time around, we had a two-hour special on ITV that was certainly engaging, but afterwards we cannot really help but answer the question: Was any of this really that necessarily? There were episodes this season that contained more in the way of story points, and this served more as a way to tie together old stories than present new ones that could carry over to the new year.

Out of the stories that are staying put into 2014, the biggest one is merely that somehow, Lady Mary still has both Lord Anthony Gillingham and Charles Blake waiting like they are contestants on “The Bachelor” hoping to get the final rose … and this has been eight months of doing so. While we learned in here that Blake has his own ties to nobility, and was merely hiding them in order to, like another show in “Joe Millionaire,” have Mary like him for who he was rather than his inheritance, this has not played a role into the decision. We’re still waiting, and the only key revelation here is that Michelle Dockery’s character will eventually choose somehow.

Meanwhile, we seemingly had an end to the Bates murder story that played out at the end of the season. It seemed for a good half hour or so that Mary was going to turn Bates in after learning of evidence that tied him to what happened to Mr. Green’s death, but his role in helping preserve the family name and protect the Prince from humiliation (the closest thing that this show will ever get to “Ocean’s Eleven”) changed that. He now seems to be in the clear, and unless someone tells Anna what happened, this issue will likely disappear just like Ivy mighty between seasons. Ivy’s potential exit, coupled, maybe with some drama on the horizon for Thomas Barrow and Tom Branson after the former caught the one-time chauffeur with a certain teacher in the gallery, were the two biggest stories that we really see shaping the new season in some substantial way.

Ivy took a potential cooking job with Harold (smartly played by Paul Giamatti) after Daisy turned it down, which was in turn largely a set-up to ensure that one of Harold’s own employees could further pursue her. Clearly, there are still some feelings there for Alfred, even if we never saw him in the special save for news that he has a prestigious new position.

London Year-End Roundup: Five Best Productions of 2013 (Matt Smith, Rupert Grint, Brendan Coyle, Rufus Sewell...)

London Year-End Roundup: Five Best Productions of 2013

American Psycho, Almeida Theatre
Critics were divided on the merits of Spring Awakening composer Duncan Sheik’s stage take on the era-defining Bret Easton Ellis novel, and who can blame them? One must look back to Sweeney Todd to find a musical that makes such a compelling case for putting psychosis center-stage. In Rupert Goold’s expert production, British TV name Matt Smith (Doctor Who) makes the gym-fit Patrick Bateman a charismatic killer of anyone’s dreams…or, make that nightmares. You have until February 1 to be drawn in—and then recoil—for yourself.

Mojo, Harold Pinter Theatre
Can a play that looked show-offy and posturing in one incarnation seem mournful and even profound the next? The answer is there to be savored in Mojo, running through February 8 at the Harold Pinter Theater (an apt locale given that Pinter himself appeared in Jez Butterworth’s 1997 film adaptation of gangster low-life in 1950s London). The cast—encompassing Harry Potter star Rupert Grint, Skyfall’s Ben Whishaw and Downtown Abbey’s own Bates, Brendan Coyle—remains the starriest seen in London all year, and the peerless director is Ian Rickson.

Old Times, Harold Pinter Theatre
Two brilliant actresses, Oscar nominee Kristin Scott Thomas and Tony nominee Lia Williams, traded roles throughout the run of Ian Rickson’s quietly dazzling take on Harold Pinter’s 1971 play, which meant audiences got two chances to ponder the shimmering mysteries at the heart of the text. This was a big year on both sides of the Atlantic for the Nobel laureate, with Broadway’s starry No Man’s Land and Betrayal competing for attention, as well. But Rickson and his cast of three, including the divine Rufus Sewell, stood a league apart. Can they go to Broadway, as well, please?

Henry Cavill’s Spending the Holidays with Gina Carano.. In the Gym

CELEBUZZ
POSTED 11 HOURS AGO   •   BY ANDREA SIMPSON

"He said he's back to training at Gym Jones for the next movie."

And that means getting back into Spandex -- $300 bucks worth.

"He bought two pairs of C-WX tights and a couple pairs of Saucony and Northface shorts," she added.

The 30-year-old heartthrob also brought a shopping companion. It looks like he and his girlfriend Gina Carano are going strong, despite their brief break-up this summer.

"He was with his MMA fighter girlfriend. She helped him pick out some shorts and took care of him more than we did," added Theobald with a laugh.

"He really kept to himself and no one recognized him," except one lucky employee. "One of our employees loves Superman so he just had to get a picture with him."

Tom Hiddleston vs. Benedict Cumberbatch: The Dance-Off

The Internet loves Tom Hiddleston and Benedict Cumberbatch. Their incredible performances (as Loki and Sherlock, in particular) kind of don’t even hold a candle to their real-life charm. But an important question remains: Whose moves are smoother, Hiddles’ or Cummerbund’s? You’ll have to decide for yourself.

Paul Giamatti found filming 'Downton' bizzare

Paul Giamatti found the slow pace of 'Downton Abbey' "very bizarre".

The American actor guest stars in the show's Christmas special as Harold Levinson and his friend and co-star Laura Carmichael says he was baffled by some of the period drama's more sedate scenes.

She told the UK's Grazia magazine: "Paul found filming 'Downton' hilarious. He couldn't get over the fact that in some of the scenes we just sit around drinking tea. He was like, 'This is great, but is this really it?' I'd be like, 'Yes, but there is a subtext, you know, so we'll do our looks and our eyebrows and then the butler pours the tea and I saw a bitty like and then we drink some more tea. There aren't any car chases or anything.' He found it very bizarre and English."

The cast say the presence of Paul and Shirley MacLaine - who reprises her role as Martha Levinson - changed the atmosphere on set for the better.
