Gerard Butler, in Trinidad, Officially Joins Jamaica Tallawahs

CARIBBEAN JOURNAL

By the Caribbean Journal staff

Hollywood actor Gerard Butler has officially joined his new Jamaica Tallawahs cricket team as they compete in the CPL semifinals in Trinidad this weekend.

Butler was revealed to have purchased an equity stake in the team earlier this week.

“Absolutely [it is a long term commitment],” he said. “I did not do this just to be in it for a couple of weeks.  I did it because I hope this new league is a long-term league and that it keeps going and keeps building so it is an investment you hope will build, but also it is an excuse to come out here [to the Caribbean], to a place I love.”

Butler also said there would be a “bit of a rivalry” with fellow actor Mark Wahlberg, who purchased an equity stake in the competing Barbados Tridents at the end of July.

“Absolutely,” he said. “At one point we were going to invest in the same team and then we thought it would be better to keep it separate – ‘You take Barbados and I will go with Jamaica.’

Rupert Penry-Jones: ‘Silk’ Has American Debut on ‘Masterpiece Mystery!’

NEW YORK TIMES
By MIKE HALE
Published: August 23, 2013

Stories by lawyers about lawyers are often guilty of grandstanding for the jury (that’s us), and early in the first episode of “Silk” the barrister heroine is told, apropos of not much: “Fifteen years you’ve been doing this and you still believe, don’t you? Innocent until proven guilty.” Just in case we missed the point, it’s repeated by her a few minutes later: “Innocent until proven guilty. Four words to live by.”

It’s a little disturbing to think that this is such a novel concept in the British legal system, but we’ll have to take the word of Peter Moffat, the show’s writer and a former barrister who created two previous legal dramas for British television. “Silk,” which is about to start its third season on BBC, makes its American premiere as part of PBS’s “Masterpiece Mystery!” on Sunday night.

It’s set among the lawyers in a London chambers, and one hurdle for American viewers will be the unfamiliarity of terms like chambers as well as the roles of barristers, solicitors, clerks, pupils and crown prosecutors.

Silk

On PBS stations on Sunday nights at 9 (check local listings).

Produced by the BBC and Masterpiece. Written by Peter Moffat; directed by Michael Offer; Cameron Roach, producer; Hilary Salmon, executive producer for the BBC; Rebecca Eaton, executive producer for Masterpiece.

WITH: Maxine Peake (Martha Costello), Rupert Penry-Jones (Clive), Tom Hughes (Nick), Natalie Dormer (Niamh) and Neil Stuke (Billy).

New BBC One Boss Unveils Judi Dench, Dustin Hoffman Film

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
3:34 PM PDT 8/22/2013 by Georg Szalai

EDINBURGH – New BBC One controller Charlotte Moore outlined her vision for the U.K. public broadcaster's flagship channel here on Thursday and announced first programming commissions, including an adaptation of a Roald Dahl book starring Judi Dench and Dustin Hoffman.

I intend to look under the bonnet of every genre to make sure we are bringing audiences distinctive, innovative and pioneering television," Moore said.

That means that BBC One should be "part of the national conversation" and that viewers should feel that the annual license fee they pay to help fund the BBC "is being well spent on quality programs." Concluded Moore: "BBC One needs to offer something for everyone, every week of the year, and that is what I’m committed to.”

While she has been in her post for only a few weeks, Moore on Thursday also unveiled first program orders designed to set the tone for what to expect from her tenure.

Roald Dahl’s Esio Trot will star Dench and Hoffman in an adaptation by Richard Curtis and Paul Mayhew-Archer. Said Moore: "It's absolutely stellar casting for one of the nation's favorite children's classics."

He's had a difficult few months as he comes to terms with the loss of his daughter Charlotte.

But Pierce Brosnan seemed to be finding solace in the arms of his beloved wife Keely Shaye Smith as they sunned themselves on holiday in Hawaii on Thursday.

The happily married couple were spotted sharing an intimate kiss as they swum in the sea off of the island of Kauai during their family trip.

Salt in your eyes? The star seemed to get splashed in the face at one point as he took his sunglasses off to give them a rub Clearly as in love as ever, the pair took a dip in the sea together as they lapped up the sun on the small island off of Hawaii.

And showing their affection for each other, the pair gave each other a hug while they were in the water and shared a kiss.

Hanging out: Pierce has been Hawaii for most of the summer spending time with his son Paris

The much loved Irish actor lost his daughter to ovarian cancer back in June and has unsurprisingly been spending lots of time with his nearest and dearest.

The Brosnan family were devastated when Charlotte died on June 28 following a three-year battle with ovarian cancer. She was just 42.

Pierce owns a home on the Hawaiian island along with his wife and loves to escape the pressures of Los Angeles by visiting there with his friends and relations.

Batman Backlash: Fans Blast Bosses As Ben Affleck Is Confirmed To Replace Christian Bale As Dark Knight

E.
BY BECCA LONGMIRE ON AUGUST 23, 2013

Batman fans across the globe have been left angered today as Ben Affleck was confirmed to play the lead role in the 2015 sequel, taking over Christian Bale in the popular flick and sending the Twittersphere into chaos.

The actor whose film Argo has received critical acclaim, will star alongside Henry Cavill who will resume the role of Superman in the sequel which will see both of the iconic superheros in the same film.

Director Zack Snyder also added: "I can't wait to work with him."

However, it seems like Batman fans don't share the same view as the director (to put it politely!) with them taking to Twitter to voice their strong opinions on the whole thing and even calling for a "petition" to stop Affleck playing the upcoming role.

One Twitter user tweeted: "Ben Affleck as Batman? With that retarded look of his? Wow Hollywood, you idiots." (sic)

Benedict Cumberbatch: The Cumberbatch Quadruple Threat

THE ATLANTIC WIRE
ESTHER ZUCKERMAN 1:22 PM ET

If you're not obsessed with British Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch yet—and there are many who are (see: Cumberbitches)—this fall might convert you. Cumberbatch appears (in one form or another) in no fewer than four films due out this fall and he plays a wide variety of roles to boot. His biggest part comes in The Fifth Estate (Oct. 18), Bill Condon's WikiLeaks drama, in which Cumberbatch will have to capture the creepy intelligence of Julian Assange.

In addition to his star turn as Assange, Cumberbatch also has roles in 12 Years a Slave (Oct. 18), based on a true story of a free man sold into slavery in the antebellum south, and August: Osage County (Dec. 25), an adaptation of the Pulitzer-winning play. We're interested to see what he does in the latter considering he will be playing against his usual hyper-intelligent type: "Little" Charles Aiken is a simple man who has an affair with someone he's really not supposed to have an affair with. (When we say "really" in this context we mean "really.") And, of course, if that's not enough Cumberbatch for you, you can hear his voice—if not his corporeal form—as the titular dragon in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (Dec. 13).

Steven Moffat says show could not continue without Benedict Cumberbatch & Martin Freeman!

sherlock-1

UNREALITY PRIMETIME
August 22nd, 2013 by Anna Howell.

Both Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have found global recognition, admiration and fame following the success of the hit BBC detective series, Sherlock.

Both have had their pick of prime time TV slots and Hollywood films since their casting, sparking fears that when the delayed third series was finally ready to start filming, both wouldn’t have the time or inclination to re-join the cast, dazzled too much by all the shiny new doors of opportunity currently piling up in front of them.

Of course we had nothing to worry about as both actors are as much English gentlemen as their characters, which is one of the reasons they are both so well loved, and have since both come out to declare that they will stay loyal to the show and play the characters for as long as the show wants them too.

So, with that in the bag and the next two series already signed for, show runner Steven Moffat has now opened up admitting that the show actually couldn’t continue without either actor.

Martin Freeman, Simon Pegg, Rosamund Pike:'The World's End' review: A fresh, funny pub crawl (review)

Comedy-adventure. Starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Martin Freeman. Directed by Edgar Wright. (R. 109 minutes.)

One of the weirder aspects of adolescence is that it's possible to have close friends you don't like, that you're just thrown in with. In "The World's End," one of those friends comes back into the lives of his four former high school buddies, two decades later, hoping to re-create the most glorious day of his youth, an all-night drinking binge. And they give in to the force of his personality and agree to join him.

For about an hour, "The World's End" is the story of four settled men, in early middle age, dutifully following their old school friend from pub to pub. Nick Frost, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine and Eddie Marsan are all talented actors, with Frost and Freeman particularly skilled in comedy, and together the five principals create the sense of men who have known each other for many years. The banter is effortless; the comedy flows.

Then the movie takes a turn into a rather unexpected direction, one foretold in the coming attractions trailer, and one that will probably be discussed in most reviews, but I won't do it here, because I enjoyed the surprise. To state it generally, the movie goes from a character study to something that is quite nutty, and yet it loses nothing in the transition. The characters stay vivid, the interaction essential, and the issues introduced remain on the table and continue to be developed. There's just this whole other crazy thing going on at the same time.

"We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics' most enduringly popular super heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some. His outstanding career is a testament to his talent and we know he and Zack will bring new dimension to the duality of this character," Greg Silverman, president of creative development at Warner Bros Pictures said.

Vote in the Anglo Fan Favorites Men of 2013 Finals: Hiddleston vs. Rickman

ANGLOPHENIA
By staff | Posted on August 22nd, 2013

We began last month with 32 Anglophile fan favorites, but when the dust finally settled, we are left with a battle of former champions — our 2011 victor Alan Rickman vs. 2012′s conqueror Tom Hiddleston. The continued supremacy of these two versatile actors, best-known for playing villains and antiheroes, is a testament to fan loyalty in a short-attention-span world. Other British stars may be greater household names and cash larger paychecks. but Hiddleston and Rickman inspire passion and devotion.

Hiddleston is a strong contender to repeat, with his army of fans even more organized and active this year. While we won’t see him in the next Avengers film, he’ll reprise his role as Loki in November’s Thor sequel The Dark World, and PBS viewers will see him in The Hollow Crown, adaptations of Shakespeare’s history plays, this September.

Rickman is not to be toyed with, however. The Rickmaniacs are fierce competitors, and it’s heartening to see this respected, Emmy-winning, twice Tony-nominated veteran, who was out in the quarterfinals last year, return to vie for the his second title. Still in demand after his decade-long run as Harry Potter‘s Severus Snape, he’s currently in cinemas worldwide as former President Ronald Reagan in Lee Daniels’ The Butler. And he has upcoming roles in Patrice Leconte‘s A Promise, opposite Rebecca Hall and Richard Madden, and as Hilly Kristal, founder of the New York punk-rock nightclub, in CBGB.

Downton Abbey Bans Dogs on Set? Rumor Is All Bark and No Bite, Estate Says

E.
by Alexis L. Loinaz

Has Downton Abbey gone to the dogs?

Sure, the hit British series' opening credits famously show a gorgeous Labrador prancing across the castle's verdant grounds. But, if local media reports are to be believed, the estate's real-life owners may not be feeling too friendly toward man's best friend.

The Daily Mail is claiming that the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon, who own the magnificent Highclere Castle in Newbury, where Downton Abbey is filmed, have banned the show's cast members from bringing their dogs with them on set.

A source reportedly told the paper that Lady Carnarvon clamped down on furry visitors "because she doesn't like the dogs going in certain areas in case they cause a mess."

The source also claimed that one of the countess' Labradors—she has five dogs of her own—gets "jealous when rival dogs are on set." (Apparently, bitchy behavior spills well beyond the prickly Dowager Countess. Woof!)

The estate's honchos, however, insist that the reports couldn't be farther from the truth.

"There is no ban from us," the Carnarvors' spokeswoman tells Today.com.

8/21/2013 by Borys Kit

FILM: Benedict Cumberbatch

Benedict Cumberbatch has exited Crimson Peak, the Legendary horror movie being directed by Guillermo del Toro.

No reason for his departure was given although sources say his exit is not due to another project.
Charlie Hunnam, Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska remain on board to star in the four-hander gothic horror story that centers on a woman who discovers that her husband might not be who he appears to be.

Peak is scheduled to shoot in January and the exit at this early stage gives del Toro plenty of time to find a replacement. The filmmaker has already shown he can roll with the punches when he quickly cast Wasikowska after Emma Stone fell off the movie.

French star Marion Cotillard, who won an Oscar for her performance in Edith-Piaf biopic “La Vie en Rose,” is set to take the leading role in Justin Kurzel’s “Macbeth.”  She replaces Natalie Portman who was announced for the part at Cannes.

Cotillard will play opposite Michael Fassbender (“Shame”).

One of Shakespeare’s most famous characters, “Macbeth” is the story of a fearless warrior and inspiring leader, set amid the war-torn 11th Century Scotland.

The romance-filled epic is produced by Iain Canning and Emile Sherman at See-Saw Films. The pair’s production credits include Oscar-winning “The King’s Speech” and “Shame.”

“Cotillard has proven extraordinary versatility through her stunning performances in ’La Vie en Rose’ and ‘Rust and Bone.’ Casting her as Lady Macbeth alongside Michael Fassbender will bring a fresh and exciting dynamic to the story of lovers pulled apart by war and ambition,” said Canning.

"She has more than one love interest," Dockery admitted with a laugh at the Television Critics Association Summer 2013 press tour. "Of course, it's important for her to eventually move on."

In an interview with BuzzFeed, Dockery likened Mary's Season 4 predicament to Season 1 where she was focused on finding a husband. "[Men] are being thrown in her direction by Cora, because she has to remarry. She doesn’t have a choice, really. Or maybe she does. I like to think that she ends up like Elizabeth, that she had one love and maybe she never, ever loves again. That would be cool, wouldn’t it?” she said.

Sherlock star questions David Miranda terror detention  Benedict Cumberbatch holds up a sign in protest over David Miranda’s detention (Picture: WENN)

Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch has launched a silent protest over the decision to detain the partner of a Guardian journalist under anti-terror laws.

Cumberbatch, who later this year will be seen in cinemas portraying WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, brandished a series of messages criticising the government and police over the detention of David Miranda, the partner of Glenn Greenwald.

The 37-year-old held up four pieces of paper to photographers who were hoping to catch a glimpse of him and Sherlock co-star Martin Freeman during filming on location in London.

‘Questions we have a right to ask in a democracy – [David] Cameron, Theresa May, GCHQ, teachers, parents, each other… Hard drives smashed, journalists detained at airports. Democracy?’ the first two pages read.

Pages three and four continued: ‘Schedule 7 Prior restraint – is this erosion of civil liberties winning the war on terror?

‘What do they not want you to know? And how did they get to know it? Does the exposure of their techniques cause a threat to our security or does it just cause them embarrassment?’

It emerged over the weekend that Mr Miranda had been detained under the controversial Schedule 7 section of the Terrorism Act 2000, which only applies to airports and ports, and had his laptop, mobile phone and memory stick seized.

Mr Greenwald, who has written stories for the Guardian based on material passed to him by National Security Agency whistle-blower Edward Snowden, said the detention was an act of intimidation, while Mr Miranda has threatened legal action if his possessions are not returned.

Hiddleston Talks Shakespeare, THOR & AVENGERS

Film superstar and dedicated thespian Tom Hiddleston discusses his integral role in the forthcoming four-film Shakespeare series premiering on PBS later this Fall, dubbed THE HOLLOW CROWN, as well as his AVENGERS and THOR roles, as part of a new interview.

Hiddleston first remarks upon his first experience with the Bard, relating, "My first Shakespearean production I ever saw, I was 13 years old. It was the RSC, A Midsummer Night's Dream. I thought some bits were funny but, to be honest, a lot of it went over my head, and it was really being taken to see Kenneth Branagh's Much Ado About Nothing and sort of being dragged, kicking and screaming because it wasn't an action film and then go, "'Oh. Denzel Washington and Keanu Reeves are in this. Oh. This is hilarious and I understand everything and it's great.'"

He adds of his affection for Baz Luhrmann's wildly imaginative re-telling of Romeo & Juliet, "I was 15 when Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet came out so it's as if he made that film for me. The soundtrack to that film was my soundtrack. Romeo or Juliet, I can't remember which character, one of them is actually supposed to be 15 and it seemed so romantic and so true."
