(video) Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston shine at THOR THE DARK WORLD premiere. reviews are great

LOS ANGELES TIMES
Oct. 23, 2013 | 11:57 a.m.

Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston and Natalie Portman arrived in grand style Tuesday to celebrate the world premiere of Marvel’s newest superhero sequel, “Thor: The Dark World.”

The film, directed by Alan Taylor (“Game of Thrones”), arrives in U.S. theaters Nov. 8, but is set to open a week earlier in the U.K. The cast was all smiles as they walked the red carpet.

The movie sees Hemsworth’s brawny superhero form an uneasy alliance with his untrustworthy brother Loki (Hiddleston) in order to save the Nine Realms from a devious plan hatched by the Dark Elf Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) that poses great danger to the universe, and especially to Thor’s lady love, Jane Foster (Portman).

On the set of the film last year, Marvel movie chief Kevin Feige said the new film took a more practical approach with the fight scenes and the locations — “Thor: The Dark World” traveled to Iceland and shot across England, hoping to lend authenticity to the sci-fi-inflected adventure.

“When you have Hemsworth looking astounding but being in a big red cape and a big outfit and Eccleston in this very extreme makeup and spectacular costume design but in these real environments, suddenly they seem more real, the entire fantasy that we’re asking the audience to buy into feels more real,” Feige said.

Early reviews of the film have praised it as entertaining, with Variety’s Justin Chang describing “The Dark World” as a “robust, impersonal visual-effects showpiece [that] proves buoyant and unpretentious enough to offset its stew of otherwise derivative fantasy/action elements.”

Just Another Day’s Work For Benedict Cumberbatch

Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug

BBC AMERICA
By Fraser McAlpine | Posted on October 25th, 2013

Acting is not like other professions. There are days when you are pretending to be a man (or woman) of enormously high status (or breeding), dressed in the finest clothes available to humankind, sucking in your cheeks and looking regal. And then there are days when someone glues Cheerios all over your face and invites you to puff your cheeks out like you’ve just swallowed a hot bullet made of jam.

Benedict Cumberbatch is not immune to days like these, especially when he had to get ready to play the dragon Smaug in the Hobbit movies, and thankfully, there was someone there to record every glorious moment.

Flickr user Tolkienerd has a gallery of shots, taken from backstage footage of Benedict pulling some astonishing Smaugfaces so that the graphics department could animate his face and body language to the words coming out of his mouth. And of course, each one is astonishing: a veritable smaugasbord, if you like.

Ripper Street Behind The Scenes - trying to get one stupid publicity shot done without laughing

How do they get an entire series done????

Matthew Macfadyen fine with Ripper gore

Matthew Macfadyen admitted he sometimes gets the giggles during filming

YAHOO TV
25 October, 2013

Matthew Macfadyen has admitted he worries he won't get through some of his Ripper Street scenes because he is laughing too much.

The actor plays Detective Inspector Edmund Reid in the Victorian police drama and revealed that while the upcoming second series includes grisly scenes such as a man falling from a window and impaling himself, he is more likely to chuckle than turn green.

He said: "The guy who was impaled on the railings in episode one didn't make me feel too squeamish because it's very cleverly done. We were actually trying not to laugh. It's the dark, high-stakes scenes that, for me, are the funniest."

The 39-year-old said a scene in the first series also saw him struggling to control his giggles.

He explained: "There was this Contagion-esque episode in the first series where we had a really long scene and spent the whole day on it. At one point I had to say to Adam [Rothenberg, who plays Captain Homer Jackson], 'What's in the stomach? What have you found?'"

The reply that it was semen set the two actors off, and after a few bodged takes Matthew had to leave the room.

"It's painful. You think, 'Is this going to be one of these scenes I can't get through?' It really becomes a worry," he laughed.

'Ripper Street' Series 2 Episode 1 spoiler-free review

CULT BOX
Wednesday, 23 October 2013 16:56
Florence Vincent

In the opening moments of ‘Pure As The Driven’, a policeman is hurled through the first floor window of an East London building and impaled on the iron railings below, and - BAM! - just like that we’re back in the grimy, gritty, glorious action of BBC One’s Victorian crime drama Ripper Street. Meaning, in other words, that it’s time to reach for the smelling salts.

Inspector Edmund Reid (Matthew Macfadyen) and his cronies Bennet Drake (Jerome Flynn) and Homer Jackson (Adam Rothenberg) are soon on the case of the impaled bobby, and before long they find themselves in the heart of London’s Chinatown, in search of mysterious beauty Blush Pang. Before the hour is out there has been the discovery of lies, corruption, murder, and a dangerous new drug that looks set to flood London. Oh, and the Elephant Man has popped up for good measure as well.

Not quite as rigorously compelling or charmingly over-the-top as the best episodes of Series 1, ‘Pure As The Driven’ is nonetheless a strong opener, giving us plenty of fun with the Story of the Week and establishing solid series-long strands.

Bennet has a new wife and Jackson is ensconced with Long Susan (MyAnna Buring) once again (with both happy marriages look set for trouble), whilst neither Reid’s wife Emily nor Miss Goren are anywhere to be seen. An enigmatic conversation with Long Susan leads us to believe Reid is up to something untoward, but – as expected – we don’t get many answers in this opening episode.

Despite the rough and tumble approach, there’s a wit and elegance to proceedings. The costumes and sets are brilliant, as is the period dialogue and thrillingly vivid slang. And there’s also the sense that this is a show that wants to give us a bit of everything.

Benedict Cumberbatch, 37, suggested he would take his girlfriend with him if he was stranded on a desert island when asked on Reddit, but didn't name names, writes Now magazine, according to Fashion & Style.

What a romantic!

"[I'd take] my family," Cumberbatch wrote on Reddit. "And my partner of the moment - whomever I wanted to spend the rest of my life with."

What else would the "Sherlock" star take?

Ever so practical, he said he would also need "a scuba diving kit. If it's not people that am allowed. Additional equipment would be a kindle with a never ending memory of books. And a survival handbook."

Rumors about Benedict Cumberbatch's dating life and possible girlfriends has recently been abuzz on the internet.

Cumberbatch recently opened up about the persistent dating rumors to TIME magazine, Fashion & Style reports.

"Every time I'm seen at a bar with a girl, I get photographed," Cumberbatch said. "Anyone who has a computer knows my entire dating history."

"I get it," he added. "Paparazzi is an inescapable, immovable obstacle."

Matthew Macfadyen: Review: Jeeves and Wooster in Perfect Nonsense, Theatre Royal Brighton, until Saturday October 26

SUSSEX EXPRESS
October 24, 2013

I was interested to see how a theatre adaption of Jeeves and Wooster would be updated for modern times.

Would it appear a bit dated perhaps? Would the jokes still be funny? And would there be enough laughs?

I need not have worried because this adaptation starring Stephen Mangan (Green Wing) and Matthew Macfadyen (Spooks) was an absolute riot from start to finish.

Humour has been injected into this play at every possible opportunity.

The performances from Mangan (Wooster), Matthew Macfadyen (Jeeves) and Mark Hadfield (Seppings) are side splittingly funny and the trio boast brilliant comic timing.

While Mangan plays just one character, Matthew Macfadyen and Hadfield play a multitude of different characters, including women.

And Hadfield plays a seven foot man, which involves standing on a chair in a very long coat.

Plus Matthew Macfadyen plays both a man and a woman at the same time, thanks to some inventive costumes, where he is split down the middle - one half man other half woman.

The stage too is used to create yet more humour. The clever Jeeves uses a bicycle to power a revolving stage and change the scenery. He has made furniture on wheels to move about.

This was the most imaginative use of scenery I have ever seen in the theatre - not only was it creative but it set up lots of the jokes in the play too.

The relationship dynamic between Jeeves and Wooster is of course filled with comedy.

Matthew Macfadyen is cool and collected as Jeeves, while Mangan plays Wooster like an over excited young chap who takes child like delight in the world.

And watch out for the lightning speed costume changes and some improvisation along the way.

Oh and they finish with a 20s flapper style dance which is so much fun.

Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman: HOLMES AND WATSON RETURN IN JANUARY

SHE KNOWS ENTERTAINMENT
Oct 23, 2013 8:03 PM by Deirdre Kaye
Posted in Entertainment / Television

Mark your calendars! Benedict Cumberbatch will return as Sherlock on Jan. 19.

Sherlock Season 3

PBS made the official announcement today that they'll air the premiere of Sherlock Season 2 on Jan. 19, immediately following Downton Abbey, which will premiere on Jan. 5. So far, all we have to go on is a very vague preview from BBC One.

We're quite excited about PBS's pairing of Downton and Sherlock. According to the station, it's all part of a new effort to pair dramas together on a certain night in an effort to raise viewership for the public station. Their acquisition of Downton alone has already paid off quite handsomely. Sunday primetime grew 26 percent during the last season of Downton. Pairing the well-loved Sherlock with it can only boost their ratings.

The official air dates for all three episodes in Season 2 are:
Jan. 19 — Episode "The Empty Hearse"
Jan. 26 — Episode "The Sign of Three"
Feb. 2 — Episode "His Last Vow"

See you in January, Cumberb****es!

A Royal Christening in Britain Amid a Refrain of Coos

NEW YORK TIMES
By KATRIN BENNHOLD
Published: October 23, 2013

LONDON — Some spent the night in the English rain, huddling under tarpaulins and keeping warm with flasks of tea outside St. James’s Palace. It was all to secure a good view of Prince George of Cambridge on his christening day Wednesday. The prince had not been seen in public since he was born three months ago.

Apparently it was worth it. “Aww,” the crowd cooed loudly when the prince, third in line to the throne, arrived with his parents, Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, the former Kate Middleton. The sun was out and the prince was dressed in a lace and satin replica of the christening gown made for the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria in 1841. “He looks like a girl,” one delighted onlooker commented.

A royal christening has perhaps a special significance in a country that has its own church. Ever since Henry VIII broke with the Roman Catholic Church and established a more accommodating version in 1534 so he could divorce and re-wed (several times), Britain’s royals have been the guardians of the Church of England.

Prince George, in other words, will not just be king one day, he will be defender of the faith and supreme governor of the Church of England.

The archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev. Justin Welby, baptized the prince, whose full name is George Alexander Louis, with water from the River Jordan in a 45-minute ceremony. Archbishop Welby said he hoped that the event would inspire more Britons to come back to church. In a video released on YouTube ahead of the service, he said Prince George would be joining two billion people around the world in the “family” of the church, adding that “the great good news is that God doesn’t care who we are.”

If tradition was on ample display in some ways, in others it was conspicuously absent.

Benedict Cumberbatch: Did Assange kill WikiLeaks movie?

Roxanne Roberts The Washington Post
10/22/13, 1:12 PM EDT |

So, that Julian Assange movie is officially a flop. The Internet is abuzz with theories about why “The Fifth Estate” bombed at the box office, bringing in a minuscule $1.7 million on opening weekend. Maybe no one cares about WikiLeaks, or Benedict Cumberbatch-as-Assange can’t carry a movie. The most-posed theory: The real-life Julian Assange’s attempted takedown could have been the deciding factor. A look at how the WikiLeaks founder launched his own personal anti-”Fifth Estate” campaign this month:

Oct. 10: Assange writes a long open letter to Cumberbatch: “I believe you are a good person, but I do not believe that this film is a good film,” and adds that the movie is riddled with errors.

Oct. 13: According to the Hollywood Reporter, Assange tells the Hollywood Foreign Press Association the movie is “doomed to fail because its anti-WikiLeaks stance doesn’t give moviegoers the kind of underdog story they want.”

Lady Mary and Two Handsome Visitors in Season 4 Episode 6

Lady Mary and Two Handsome Visitors in Season 4 Episode 6
Could they have made the new love triangle on Downton anymore obvious? On Lady Mary’s (Michelle Dockery) left we have familiar face, Evelyn Napier (Brendan Patricks) who reappeared in Episode 5 still holding a torch for Mary.

On the right, there’s Evelyn’s boss, Charles Blake (Julian Ovenden). We’ve heard he and Mary don’t exactly hit it off but then again, the last time Evelyn brought a friend to the Abbey, Mary didn’t seem to mind his company (RIP Kemal Pamuk). Let’s just hope things work out better for Charles!

Lord Robert and Lady Cora Dance Together in Season 4 Episode 6
Remember last season when the marriage of Lord Robert and Lady Cora (Elizabeth McGovern) looked to be failing? No signs of that here with Lady Cora all smiles as she dances with the birthday boy in Episode 6.

Anna and John Bates Talk in Season 4 Episode 6

Anna and John Bates Talk in Season 4 Episode 6
John Bates (Brendan Coyle) just recently learned what happened to his wife in Episode 3, and we’re hoping the two can now turn a new page in their relationship. Unfortunately, things look to be on the heated side during a rare dinner out for the couple. We hate it when you two fight.

The Dowager Countess in Season 4 Episode 6
How old are you again? That looks to be the question the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith) is trying to remember the answer to as she peers over at her son Robert. On her right, we get another quick peek at Charles Blake, which, you know, we don’t hate.

Lady Edith Has a Lot on Her Mind in Season 4 Episode 6
It’s no secret Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael) is missing her love, editor Michael Gregson (Charles Edwards), but what might be a secret are the results from that doctor’s visit Edith made in Episode 5. Could she be expecting a little Gregson? Sounds like we just might be in for another scandal at Downton!
