Alan Rickman tends to his own garden, back in director’s chair By Marlee Walters JANUARY 21, 2013 (CRITICAL MOB)
Rival landscape gardeners, hear us out: Alan Rickman.
Rickman hasn't directed since 1997 and hasn't teamed up with Kate Winslet since 1995's Sense and Sensibility, but that doesn't mean he's lost his touch. He's directing a period piece about two rival landscape gardeners (Winslet and Rust and Bone's Matthias Schoenaerts) commissioned to create a fountain for Louis XIV.

Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt On The Red Carpet For London Premiere Of 'Salmon Fishing In The Yemen' (PHOTOS) Posted: 10/04/2012 21:22 Updated: 10/04/2012 21:34 (HUFFINGTON POST)
Ewan McGregor has admitted that he is "no fisherman" as he attended the premiere of his latest film Salmon Fishing In The Yemen. The actor, who plays fisheries expert Alfred Jones in the romantic comedy, said fishing was not one of his favourite hobbies.
The film, which has been adapted from Paul Torday's novel, sees McGregor tasked with the seemingly impossible mission of introducing salmon into the Yemen wadis by a sheikh. "I'm not really a fisherman," he said. "I must have done some fishing when I was a kid here and there but it is not really a passion of mine."

Liam Neeson: officially harder than a pack of wolves (Now. Here. This)
Posted at 6:00 pm, January 8, 2012 in Arts & Entertainment
It’s been gradually picking up momentum over the past few months, but a series of Stateside screenings have pushed Liam Neeson’s latest, survival thriller ‘The Grey’, to the top of the must-see pile. As anyone who saw ‘Unknown’ can attest, Neeson’s unexpected career swerve into hard-man action roles hasn’t always been entirely successful, but this one looks like a stormer. He plays an oil driller whose journey home from Alaska is interrupted first by a plane crash, then by a pack of ravenous wolves, who stalk Liam and his team through the barren wilderness. It’s directed by Joe Carnahan, whose career path has been rocky at best (‘Smokin’ Aces’, anyone?), but this cracking trailer, which bears a remarkable similarity to 1997’s hugely entertaining Anthony Hopkins vs Grizzlies romp, ‘The Edge’, suggests he may have broken the slump. We’ll be reviewing ‘The Grey’ for its release on January 27.

Can 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy' contend for Best Picture at Oscars? (Gold Derby)
By Tom Brueggemann
Jan 08 2012 | 11:00 am
Now that "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" has reaped the most bids on the BAFTA long list (16), can it become the film that came in from the cold at the Oscars?
If it does, it will follow many other BAFTA-honored films to a Best Picture nomination and more, including "Atonement," "An Education" and "The Reader." Usually, at least one British film makes the Oscar list, possibly because there's a notable overlap between the two voting groups. About 500 of the academy's 6,000 members belong to BAFTA. That's 8% of AMPAS – a significant number since a film needs 5% of the first-placed votes in order to make the Oscar list.
"Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" benefits from possibly being the most acclaimed British-produced film of the year. On the BAFTA long list, it seems to have replaced the final "Harry Potter" entry as the British film of 2011. While "My Week with Marilyn" also scored 16 BAFTA mentions, "TTSS" had higher placement as indicated by the initial listing of top five choices. "Potter," shockingly, failed to make the list of 15 best films.
Meantime, "TTSS" so far has grossed more than $20 million in the U.K. Comparing populations, that’s the equal to $100 million in the U.S., so it has popular support to add to its case.
Its strong reviews (85 at Metacritic) and socko art-house grosses over Christmas should have already made this a prominent Oscar film. However, "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" has failed to do well in most U.S. award races so far. Despite that, executives at Focus believe they are still in the hunt.
After a limited release last month, "TTSS" expanded to over 800 theaters in the U.S./Canada on Friday, with lots of accompanying advertising. The timing is significant, since it comes when Academy members are casting their votes for nominees.
"Having a strong presence in the market when Academy members have their ballots in hand -- it couldn't be a better date," says David Brooks, Focus' president of worldwide marketing. And they did it before. Four years ago, Focus chose the same post-New Year's weekend to go wider with "Atonement," which ended up a Best Picture nominee.
At every step of its release over the last few weeks, "TTSS" has outgrossed "The Artist" when playing at the same theaters, often by a large margin. This has not gotten as much attention as it should. As it expanded this weekend, it grossed $5.8 million, with the second best per-screen-average among the top 10. Its performance is similar to "The Descendants" in its initial expansion last month.
Focus reports the film’s core audience is similar to the Academy: 62% was age 40 or older, 46% were 50 or older, with a high level of education.
After its Venice premiere, "TTSS" didn’t show at major North American film festivals because star Gary Oldman was working on "The Dark Knight Rises." He is now back home in Los Angeles and making appearances, including at the Arclight Theater where he participated in 6-film retrospective of his career. Focus is spreading the message across Hollywood, just as it did in the U.K., that Oldman has never been nominated for an Oscar. This year there are three slots firmed up in the Best Actor race (George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Jean Dujardin), but two nominations still open.
And with a masterful cast including veterans and rising stars (four of whom apart from Oldman were BAFTA listed) the film might also have extra appeal to the strong acting branch in the Academy. It doesn’t hurt to have recent winner Colin Firth stand out in an excellent ensemble .
The lack of a Producers’ Guild nomination is a negative, but "Atonement" and Focus' "A Serious Man" also got snubbed by the guild before showing up on the Oscar list. Sometimes the Academy just reacts differently. "Letters from Iwo Jima," "Crash," "Chocolat" and "Seabiscuit" are also films that lacked some significant support ahead of the nominations yet scored very well with the Academy.
None of those examples had as little precursor support as "TTSS," but they all competed in years with only five Best Picture slots. "Blind Side" -- the first year with more than five nominees -- received its one and only best film nomination from the Academy.
"We're optimistic that Academy members, who are the best of the best in their respective crafts, will appreciate the very high level of creative achievement in this film," Brooks says. "Also, because of their later nomination deadline, Academy members have a longer period of time to consider films and see them in multiple places and, in some cases, multiple times."

The Intruders: Derivative, moderately engaging paranormal horror starring Clive Owen ( List)
- Source: The List (Issue 692)
- Date: 5 January 2012
- Written by: Allan Hunter
(15) 110min
Spanish director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo has never quite delivered on the promise of his clever debut feature Intacto. Retro chiller Intruders is cleverly constructed and suspenseful but fades when pitted against superior genre fare like The Orphanage and Pan’s Labyrinth or the 1970s chillers like The Omen which it consciously echoes.
In Spain, a young boy finds his worst nightmares bursting into the real world as a hooded demon called HollowFace emerges looking like a Death Eater from Harry Potter. The story continues in leafy suburban England where 12-year-old Mia (Ella Purnell) believes that a faceless intruder is coming to steal her features. Her father John (Clive Owen) fights the demons on her behalf while her mother Susanna (Carice Van Houten) wonders if the whole thing is a figment of their joint imaginations.
Fresnadillo favours creepy, slow-building suspense over graphic gore but seems to lose sight of some promising plot elements – including the character of Daniel Bruhl’ s kindly priest – that are never given their full weight. Spanish screenwriters Nicolas Casariego and Jaime Marques do eventually spell out what connects the two children ensuring a satisfying conclusion to an otherwise derivative, moderately engaging scary movie.

Aspiring director in shock after Dame Judi Dench agrees to be in his first film
The Advertiser
DREAM COME TRUE: Chris Foggin directs Dame Judi Dench, right, and Penny Ryder in
He said: “I told her I’d love to direct her and she said: ‘Yes, let’s do it’.
“It was a surreal moment. I was like: ‘Wow’.”
Within months, Mr Foggin was directing the 76-year-old dame in Friend Request Pending, a 12-minute comedy about two elderly ladies who turn to social networking website Facebook to try to land a date with a local vicar.
Filming took place in Ealing, London, over two days in May.
Mr Foggin said: “I thought: ‘This is an opportunity I’ve got to run with'. It took a few months to find the right project.
"I wanted to get it right and do something which would challenge Judi as well. It was an incredible experience.
"Judi’s such a wonderful person to be around. It was a giggle too – she’d never used Facebook or a laptop before.”
Mr Foggin was born in Sunderland and grew up in Newton Hall, Durham, where his parents still live. He graduated from Northumbria University three years ago and moved to London shortly afterwards, after a stint working in a sandwich shop.
Friend Request Pending will have a press screening on Monday night, before getting its UK premiere at the 55th British Film Institute London Film Festival on Friday.
Mr Foggin hopes it will then be shown at film festivals around the globe, including Sundance, in Utah, US, in January, and Berlin, Germany, in February.
After that, he hopes to direct his first feature film. But his long-term dream is to make a movie about his native North-East, showing it in its best light.
Mr Foggin has also worked on W.E., directed by Madonna, who he said was “great fun”.

Telluride sits at the end of a canyon.
Colin Firth, who plays the stuttering King George VI, and Geoffrey Rush, as the consort's Australian-born speech therapist, were present at the screening and received a rare standing ovation from a notoriously critical audience.
It was Firth's first visit to the annual four-day Telluride Film Festival and he reportedly said: "It feels more like a community than a festival ... it's so pure ... It doesn't get better."

The film stars Keira Knightley (in her third collaboration with Wright) as the title character, the unhappy wife of a high-ranking statesman in the Russian government during the late 19th century who engages in an extramarital affair with the younger Count Vronsky. Jude Law stars as Anna's husband Alexei Karenin, with Aaron Johnson playing Vronksy. Kelly Macdonald, Matthew Macfadyen, Ruth Wilson, Emily Watson and Olivia Williams also star. The novel was adapted by Oscar-winning screenwriter Tom Stoppard ("Shakespeare in Love", "Brazil").
Wright's last film was the action/thriller "Hanna" starring Eric Bana, Cate Blanchett and Saoirse Ronan. He also directed "Atonement", "Pride & Prejudice" and "The Soloist".
"Anna Karenina", generally considered Tolstoy's greatest work, has been adapted several times before, the most famous being the Clarence Brown-directed 1935 version starring Greta Garbo and Fredric March.

Matt Smith wants Colin Firth or Whoopi in the TARDIS on Dr. Who
- Source: bang showbiz
- Date: 1 October 2, 2011
Matt Smith wants Whoopi Goldberg or Colin Firth to star as a companion in the next series of 'Doctor Who'.
Matt Smith wants Whoopi Goldberg to play his companion in the next series of 'Doctor Who'.The 28-year-old actor - who plays the Doctor - thinks the 'Sister Act' star would be a great foil for the Time Lord and he would also love Oscar winner Colin Firth to join him in the TARDIS.
He told BANG Showbiz: "Whoopi Goldberg would be a great companion wouldn't she? Yeah, she'd be great. Also I'd love Eric Cantona, or Colin Firth. Colin Firth would be great but he would not do it. God, when I think about it there are so many people I would love to get in it."
Matt acted opposite several guest stars in the current series including David Walliams, James Corden and Hugh Bonneville, and the sci-fi show is renowned for casting actors in one-off adventures.
This year's run ends tonight (01.10.11) with season finale 'The Wedding of River Song' and viewers will see the Doctor encounter pterodactyls and face his own death as he is pushed to the "edge".
Matt revealed: "Well it's a strange world that we occupy in the episode - there are children around when the pterodactyls are around, it's pretty bizarre. I probably shouldn't say you too much about it . I think it's very interesting for us to see this character that we all know in different guises and, know very well, fundamentally pushed to an edge."
'Doctor Who' Series 6 finale 'The Wedding of River Song' airs on BBC One tonight at 7.05pm.

Property from Keira Knightley film London Boulevard for sale
FindaProperty.com loves nothing more than settling in to watch the latest crime caper movie. And it’s even better if said flick features some tasty property shots. Good news for us then, that the posh West London gaff where Keira Knightley was “minded” by Colin Farrell in 2010′s British geezer film London Boulevard is now up for sale.

For those who haven’t yet seen the film, Knightley’s Charlotte is an uber famous starlette who hides out in her West London home (Holland Park in the film, but Notting Hill in real life) and hires Mitchell (Farrell), an East London ex-con, to protect her from the aggressive paps who harangue her every turn. Oh, and the film, also starring Ray Winstone, comes over a bit The Bodyguard in parts if you know what we mean.
The two bedroom Botts Mews flat, which was used to depict part of Charlotte’s home in the film and in which, erm, Mitchell well … actually we’d rather not say (far be it from us to be the spoiler), is now on sale through Strutt and Parker for £550,000.
