Richard Armitage, Martin Freeman: Comic-Con crowd goes crazy for 'Hobbit' footage By DAVID GERMAIN AP Movie Writer Posted: 07/14/2012 05:00:55 PM PDT Updated: 07/14/2012 05:12:23 PM PDT (MERCURY NEWS0

SAN DIEGO—If reaction to "The Hobbit" footage at Comic-Con is any indication, Peter Jackson has another couple of blockbusters on his hands.

The crowd attending Jackson's "Hobbit" preview at the fan convention Saturday went wild over a 12-minute reel the filmmaker and his colleagues screened.

Broken into two films, "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" and "The Hobbit: There and Back Again," the 3-D epic is Jackson's prequel to his "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, whose finale won 11 Academy Awards, including best picture and director.

"An Unexpected Journey" arrives in theaters Dec. 14, with "There and Back Again" following in December 2013.

The films are based on J.R.R. Tolkien's prequel novel, which chronicles how tiny hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) acquired the ring of power that causes all the ruckus in "The Lord of the Rings," Jackson's three-part adaptation of Tolkien's fantasy saga.

Along with Jackson and Freeman, "The Hobbit" panel at Comic-Con featured "Lord of the Rings" co-stars Ian McKellen, who reprises his role as the wizard Gandalf, and Andy Serkis, who is back as twisted ring-keeper Gollum. Also on hand was Richard Armitage, who plays the dwarf Thorin Oakenshield.

Jackson showed 12 minutes of footage that included a chillingly comic exchange between Bilbo and Gollum; a tender moment between McKellen's Gandalf and Cate Blanchett, reprising her role as elf queen Galadriel; and the pivotal moment when Bilbo discovers The Ring.

Speaking at San Diego's Comic-Con about the pressure on the show, Miller told fans: "The fact that there have been so many interpretations over the years actually takes the pressure off.

Elizabeth McGovern: Lady Cora turns to rock'n'roll – but don't expect youthful rage and heartbreak The Downton Abbey actress came late to music but says it is her passion ADAM SHERWIN SATURDAY 14 JULY 2012 (THE INDEPENDENT)

As Lady Cora, the Downton Abbey heiress, Elizabeth McGovern has a central role in a television drama phenomenon. But the American actress said she would give it all up to jump in the back of a van and go on tour with her late-blooming rock'n'roll band.

Tomorrow afternoon, McGovern will trudge through the Hyde Park mud and lead her group, Sadie and the Hotheads, on to the Rising Stage for new talent, at the Hard Rock Calling Festival, headlined by Paul Simon.

The Oscar-nominated actress, 50, first picked up a guitar only 10 years ago, and her songs dwell on the mixture of domestic contentment and frazzled chaos that comes with being a middle-aged, middle-class mother with two teenage daughters.

"My songs are not filled with rage and heartbreak," McGovern told The Independent. "They are observations from looking at my life and the people around me. They come from a mature perspective."

Sadie and the Hotheads have recorded an album which will be a "self-help" guide for parents driven to distraction by life's trials . "It's called How Not To Lose Things. It's like a self-help book for people who have to juggle so many balls," said McGovern, who lives in London with husband Simon Curtis, a film director.

Christian Bale, Tom Hardy: David Letterman Reviews The Dark Knight Rises: “I Loved It” By: Scott Johnson on July 13, 2012 (POSSIBLE SPOILER IN THE VIDEO)

Letterman said, “What a deal this thing is. Well, you know what, I’ll tell you in all honesty. I went to the movie, and it’s two hours and forty-five minutes. So two hours and forty-five minutes, that says bring survival gear, and I went in there, and the thing flies by. I was amazed at how quickly it goes by, and that’s the sign of a great movie.” Looking at Hathaway, Letterman also added, “You were fantastic. The cat-suit was fantastic, and I loved it. I loved it!”

What did Letterman think about The Dark Knight Rises in comparison to The Amazing Spider-Man? Letterman said, “Well, earlier in the summer I saw the Spider-Man movie, and I liked that also. But in the Spider-Man movie, halfway through there’s a giant lizard.” Letterman continued, “But there’s a giant lizard, they’re chasing in Spider-Man, and it’s in 3D. But you see, in my mind, I know there aren’t giant lizards. So when the giant lizard arrives, I’m less interested in the movie. In the Batman movie, it’s just sinister people. I know they exist. So you got that going for you as well.”

DAVID LETTERMAN POSSIBLE SPOILER FOR BATMAN ENDING

Michael Fassbender vs Ryan Gosling: '50 Shades of Grey' Fan Favorite BYLisa Costantini , Hollywood.com Staff | Friday, July 13, 20

We aren't totally sure why Robert Pattinson threatened to actually "lick the pages" of the hot-selling novel 50 Shades of Grey when interviewed by MTV News at Comic-Con. But now that we know hottie Ryan Gosling and equally hot Prometheus' Michael Fassbender are frontrunners to play the movie's lead, we can relate a bit more to the thought behind it.

The two actors are being considered to play Christian Grey in the movie adaptation of the bestselling erotic e-novel by E.L. James. So far the highly anticipated upcoming movie has only announced the two-person producing team the British author hand-picked to take on the first in her trilogy series.

Jennifer Saunders has banned Madonna from appearing on her smash-hit comedy Absolutely Fabulous. Saunders, who writes and stars in the popular series with Joanna Lumley, has made no secret of her desire for Madonna to appear on the show over the last two decades but has now given up after the Material Girl has continued to snub her requests. "We have had loads of celebrities who have said no to us, but always Madonna. Madonna is the bane of our lives," Saunders said. "In fact even if she said yes now we would have to turn her down. Madonna has always said no - and so are we."

Henry Cavill: Beautiful Person Post: Superman Man Of Steel Trailer Incoming. Also, How Cavill Became Superman Read more at ONTD

With rumours now rife that a teaser trailer for The Man of Steel will appear along with prints of The Dark Knight Rises this week, director Zack Snyder has confirmed that they will show some footage at this weekend's Comic Con in San Diego. More interestingly, while speaking to Dotted Line, he chatted about lead Henry Cavill's casting...

"We had about 500 guys initially. We did this massive auditioning madness. It got down to the usual suspects in a pretty quick order. Henry Cavill was actually the first one we physically tested on film. We actually tested him in the Christopher Reeves Superman suit. And that was a big deal. That’s a hard suit to pull off. Trust me. If you’re just standing there in that suit, it’s dodgy. It felt like we just bought it a costume shop. Plus, there’s no mask. I’ve been around a few superhero costumes, and it’s weird because when you’re in the Superman costume it’s just you from the neck up. And somebody just combed your hair. But Henry came out of the trailer when we were shooting a test and everybody thought, ‘Okay, that’s Superman.’ He was awesome and did a great job."

Hugh Bonneville: YOU COULDN'T MAKE IT UP: BEHIND THE SCENES ON TWENTY TWELVE Written: Sunday, 08 July 2012 ARTICLE BY GERARD GILBERT FOR THE INDEPENDENT (HUGH BONNEVILLE ON LINE)

Gerard Gilbert is granted an exclusive guided tour behind the scenes of the award-winning comedy 'Twenty Twelve' – and discovers how sometimes life imitates art more closely than you imagine...

Visiting television drama and comedy sets can be a tedious business, with a lot of hanging around between takes and re-takes, but watching the first of the final three episodes of Twenty Twelve being filmed is a delight. I'm an admirer, anyway, of John Morton's award-winning BBC2 comedy about the Olympic Deliverance Commission (ODC), the fictional body tasked with organising the 2012 London Olympic Games, and this was like having a private live performance. And who cares about re-takes when a fantastic cast led by Hugh Bonneville, Jessica Hynes and Amelia Bullmore are delivering the sort of nuanced dialogue that almost demands repeat listening? Take five? Bring it on.

"You really do have to concentrate on the lines," says Bullmore, who plays Kay Hope, the head of sustainability, a role in charge of what happens to the Olympic venues after the Games. "It's speedy and feather-light; you don't sit on anything, you just bomb on through. If I had a fiver for every time John [Morton] said, 'Pace', I'd have a lot of fivers."

We're sitting in standard-issue partitioned offices on the 37th floor of the Canary Wharf Tower in London's Docklands – the previous series were filmed on the 29th floor, so this is a sitcom literally going up in the world – the windows affording a distant panoramic view of Olympic Park. As his character Ian Fletcher, ODC's head of deliverance, chairs a breakfast meeting to sort out the travel arrangements for visiting American VIPs, Hugh Bonneville is experiencing hiccups with his lines. "Obviously we can't have the First Lady sitting in traffic on the Balls Pond Road as Usain Bolt crosses the finishing line in the 100 metres," he recites smoothly after a couple of takes. "At the same time, we can't have Boris being mown down on his bike by a cavalcade of armour-plated Lincoln Continentals."

Not only is this a fiendishly intricate line to deliver in the midst of a rapid-fire ensemble scene, it's also very funny. Is Bonneville ever not able to retain a deadpan face? "You don't actually have time for corpsing because you're just panicking like hell to get it right," he says. "That scene took five hours and the challenge is to make it look effortless and accidental, but as you saw, it's actually very finely honed."

Bonneville is "zooming up and down the M4" to fit this filming into his ongoing commitments for Downton Abbey – his busy timetable one of the main reasons that this final series of Twenty Twelve was split in two; the first five episodes (screened in March) were filmed last summer, while this concluding trilogy has been left until nearly the last minute. "Trying to prise Hugh out of the arms of Downton Abbey is very tricky," says Morton, creator, writer and director of the series. "The good consequence of that is that I was able to leave three episodes to write closer to the Games, although actually they're not really fantastically topical. It's not like a stand-up doing a routine about this week's news about the Olympics. It's trying to make up things that haven't happened but you feel might have."

Indeed, Twenty Twelve has become renowned for its almost spooky prescience, going right back to the very first episode in March 2011, which featured problems with the 1,000-day countdown clock. The morning after the episode aired, the real-life clock in Trafalgar Square broke down. "I had no idea there was a countdown clock," claims Morton, "and then to find out that not only had they done a clock but... it's just a wonderful piece of happenstance."

Others might suspect espionage – but Morton denies he had a mole inside the offices of the real-life version of ODC, the almost satirically named Locog (the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games), which happens to have its headquarters a few floors down from the Twenty Twelve set. "There was someone in the costume department whose sister, I think, may have had occasion to go in [to Locog] and was able to give us a steer as to whether or not they wore ties," says Morton, "but I didn't want an inside track. These people are made up. I wanted to put some clear blue water between us and Locog.

Richard Armitage: New Line Tornado Project Pulls In 'The Hobbit' Star Richard Armitage, Teen Sex Comedy 'Premature' Adds Craig Roberts & Alan Tudyk NEWS BY CHARLIE SCHMIDLIN | JULY 12, 2012 5:41 PM (THE PLAYLIST)

Two teen-centered films from New Line and FilmNation have been quietly picking up steam as of late, and while neither production packs tremendous star power under its respective wings, our latest casting report shows they've decided to pull in some fine character actors and fresh talent instead.

After more than a year donning hours-worth of make-up every day in order to play Thorin Oakenshield in “The Hobbit,” actor Richard Armitage (“MI-5”) must be pretty thrilled to be starring next as a flesh-and-blood human, this time in an untitled New Line disaster flick. He'll join Sarah Wayne (“The Walking Dead”), as well as newcomer Alycia Debnam-Carey in the film, which follows a group of high school teenagers who contend with the immediate aftermath of a devastating tornado. Helming the film is director Steve Quale (“Final Destination 5”), working from John Swetnam's script, and while no word has been revealed on the approach Quale will take (let the words “found footage” stay far, far away), having an actor as accomplished as Armitage in your arsenal definitely won't hinder proceedings. [Deadline]

Hugh Bonneville: Olympic sitcom in real life security breach TOM PECK WEDNESDAY 11 JULY 2012 (THE INDEPENDENT)

It is a plot line seemingly straight from the sitcom Twenty Twelve.

Olympic officials grant permission to film in a highly restricted security area, to a television sitcom satirising Olympic security. Said sitcom - a heavily trailed BBC prime time show - is then broadcast, creating an actual real life security risk.

Only it's not satire, it's real life, and the sitcom in question is, of course, Twenty Twelve.

In last night's episode of the award winning BBC comedy, the first of three final episodes to be aired before the games, rough-talking, Obama-guarding American Secret Service personnel arrive in Stratford, decidedly unhappy with the security arrangements. They are shown the airport style security in place, in an attempt to placate them, which fails (oh, and Hugh Bonneville gets shot in the foot, literally).

But the sequence in question, The Independent can reveal, was recorded in the Olympic Park's actual security areas. The only thing missing were the signs usually in place reading “For security reasons, filming and photography is not allowed in this area.”

A spokesperson for the BBC confirmed indeed that: "Twenty Twelve requested permission to film in a small area within the security gates of the stadium and the London Olympics kindly agreed."

Brendan Coyle: ‘Downton’s’ Brendan Coyle on Mr Bates in love 09 Jul 2012 (THE WITNESS)

THE award-winning British period drama Downton Abbey is back for a second season and The Witness caught up with one of the show’s stars, Brendan Coyle, who plays Bates, the valet to the Earl of Grantham.
In the last series, a scandal erupted that threatened his position and his burgeoning love affair with the head housemaid Anna (played by Joanne Froggatt).

But at the start of this season, life seems a lot more promising for Bates. Coyle explains: “On the face of it, things couldn’t be rosier for him. From his mother, Bates has inherited a house and a sum of money, which is quite unusual for a man of his background.

“His relationship with Anna is also in full bloom, and they are planning to get married. He’s back to being valet to Lord Grantham. The path seems very smooth. What could possibly go wrong?”
But very quickly Bates’s world is turned upside down by the arrival of his wife, Vera (Maria Doyle Kennedy).

“The arrival of his wife is catastrophic. Bates is prepared to do everything and anything to throw off the chains of a very unhappy marriage. He spends all his inheritance in trying to free himself, but still she will not let him go,” Coyle said.

“Vera is not a pantomime villain, but she has this tremendous power and a stranglehold over him and does not want to see him happy. Of course, the marriage breakdown is not all her fault — it takes two people to cause an unhappy marriage. It is a very interesting, very layered relationship. It makes for a really powerful storyline.”

DOWNTON Abbey can be seen at 8.30 pm every Sunday on BBC Entertainment (DStv channel 120).

Colin Firth, Reese Witherspoon: Pics and Movie Stars in Town Meet Fans Cartersville Patch writer Cady Schulman shares her experience meeting Colin Firth and Reese Witherspoon on Wednesday. By Cady Schulman Email the autho (CARTERSVILLE PATCH)

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m obsessed with celebrities. And, in my career as a journalist, I’ve been lucky enough to meet a few famous people, such as Cal Ripken Jr., Al Gore and Bobby Cox. And, a few months ago, I got to meet Kim Fields, better known as Tootie from The Facts of Life, when she visited Tellus Science Museum.

So, when I heard that Devil’s Knot was filming in Cartersville, I was obviously obsessed with catching a glimpse of one of the many stars in town. My drive through town somehow always ended up driving by the old courthouse where the movie is being filmed. And yes, I was one of those people who slowed down, craning my neck to try to get a glimpse of someone. I saw Reese Witherspoon from a distance the first day of filming, and I thought that was pretty neat. I didn’t really expect much else since I haven’t had the time to go downtown to watch.

Until Wednesday night, that is. My husband, daughter and I were driving home after a late dinner in town following Lucy’s gymnastics class and a city council meeting I had covered in Marietta. We caravanned home, taking Church Street although I really wanted to drive down Cherokee Avenue again. And, when we drove by the courthouse parking lot, we saw a group of people gathered.

I immediately turned onto Elizabeth Street to pull over and tell Joe that we had to go over there to see what was going on. Joe thought I was being crazy. I insisted, and he went along with it, even though I knew he was ready to get home.

I’m a very shy person, so when we pulled into the courthouse parking lot, I asked Joe to go over and see what was going on while I waited with Lucy. He was sure it was just a group of extras waiting while a scene was being filmed. I was adamant that it was onlookers.

I’ll give you one guess as to who was right. Not Joe. He called me and told me to hurry with Lucy, and when we joined the group, we saw Colin Firth signing autographs and taking pictures with fans. I totally wanted to squeal and tell him how much I love him, but I was cool, calm and collected. I waited my turn, got my autograph but before I could get a picture, he turned away to other fans. I tried to ask for a picture as well but, as I said, I can get rather shy and quiet, so I went to the back of the line.

Then, he got ready to leave. I got disheartened. Until, one of the people in his group saw Lucy, who was patiently holding my hand, and told him to wait because he HAD to have his picture taken with this baby (who isn’t really a baby at 2 ½, but who am I to argue?). And, of course, the baby’s mommy. Duh. Lucy tried to fight it. I told her what was going on as calmly as I could. She didn’t care, but she went with it. Yes, I used my child to get my picture taken with a movie star, and I’m not ashamed of it!

Another group had gathered at the other end of the parking lot, so we hurried on over there to find Reese Witherspoon signing autographs. She wasn’t posing for pictures, but who were we to complain? Some people had the fabulous idea of having the stars sign their cell phone cases, but that didn’t register with me. It’s a good thing I had my trusty reporter’s notebook on hand.

Ten Reasons Why Michael Fassbender is The Man Why Michael Fassbender is the best Hollywood actor to don the Assassin's hood. by Lucy O'Brien JULY 10, 2012 (IGN)

It’s hard to name a young working actor in Hollywood with more credibility than Michael Fassbender. The Irish/German thesp has shot up the Hollywood ladder of late thanks to a series of carefully chosen roles appealing to cinephiles and comic fans alike – and with the recent announcement of his role in the upcoming Assassin’s Creed movie, he’s gaining new attention from legions of gamers. Whether you’re a new or an established Fass Fan, here are ten reasons why Michael Fassbender is The Man.

He's Got Style

One can’t deny Fassbender’s almost insistent suaveness. X-Men: First Class showed us the guy can rock a vintage leather jacket, and his subsequent turn as a wealthy New Yorker in 2011 drama Shame proved he can turn any look into instant cool. For a franchise drenched in as much lavish style as Assassin's Creed, the recent GQ Magazine cover boy couldn't be more suited to don the hood.

He Stood Out in a Tarantino Cast

Fassbender's performance as the extremely British Lt. Archie Hicox in Quentin Tarantino's 2009 Inglorious Basterds is a stand-out amongst a stand-out cast. It's true that Tarantino traditionally enjoys lengthy speeches from his characters, sometimes to a fault, but Fassbender's wordy French tavern scene is so perfectly executed it comes close to stealing the entire movie. Here was an actor teetering on the edge of stardom, and having a hell of a lot of fun while doing it.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain, first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum. Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities…

A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know. The screenplay for “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” is by Fran Walsh & Philippa Boyens & Peter Jackson & Guillermo del Toro, based on The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Jackson is also producing the film, together with Carolynne Cunningham, Zane Weiner and Fran Walsh. The executive producers are Alan Horn, Toby Emmerich, Ken Kamins and Carolyn Blackwood.

Emmys 2012: How 'Downton Abbey' might affect the drama races By Rick Porter July 11, 2012 7:19 PM ET (ZAP IT)

When the Emmy nominations are announced on July 19, you'll probably see quite a few repeat nominees. It's what the Emmys does, to a large extent, and as discussed previously, it's unlikely that any new shows not named "Homeland" will get a bucketful of nominations.

There is one returning show, however, that has the potential to shake up several races: "Downton Abbey." PBS' British import is moving from the movie/miniseries field to the drama series categories this year, and it wouldn't be surprising to see the show come close to matching the 11 nominations it received in 2011.

If "Downton" scores a big nomination haul, though, that means other shows and performers might get left out in the cold.

Here's a look at how "Downton Abbey" might affect several big drama races at the 2012 Emmys.

Drama series

Chances of a "Downton" nomination: Very high. The TV academy has a long history of embracing PBS' "Masterpiece" offerings both as miniseries and dramas. The show was also something of a phenomenon this season, pushing the public broadcaster's ratings to much higher levels than usual.

2011 nominees: "Boardwalk Empire," "Dexter," "Friday Night Lights," "Game of Thrones," "The Good Wife," "Mad Men" (winner)

Most likely to be pushed out by "Downton": Last year was the swan song for "Friday Night Lights," so let's say the returning "Breaking Bad" gets that spot. With "Downton" and "Homeland" both likely to score series nods, the bet here is that "Dexter" and "Boardwalk Empire" go by the wayside.

Reese Witherspoon, Colin Firth Dine at Canoe The Academy Award winning actors dined with their cast mates and producers over the weekend. By Sydney Busby ( SMYRNA VININGS PATCH)

The stars shined bright in Vinings last weekend as Academy Award winning actors Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth took a break from filming Devil’s Knot to enjoy dinner at Canoe.

Co-star Stephen Moyer, known for his role as Bill Compton on HBO’s True Blood, also attended. Lori Vance, Canoe’s special event coordinator, said the actors were accompanied by a small party of about 15 of the film’s producers and investors.

“It was a small, intimate dinner,” she said. “They really just wanted to be able to come to dinner and be able to relax. It was pretty low-key (…) They had a great time,” she said. “I heard from them the next day. They really enjoyed it. They started off outside and then they moved in to the private dining room for dinner.”

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Veteran British actor Peter O'Toole, praised for esteemed roles in classic films such as "Lawrence of Arabia," announced on Tuesday he is retiring from acting in films and stage.

"It is time for me to chuck in the sponge. To retire from films and stage. The heart for it has gone out of me: it won't come back," O'Toole, who is 79 and lives in London, said in a statement released by New York publicist Bill Augustin.

O'Toole said that his career, which has included eight Academy Award nominations without a win, "has brought me public support, emotional fulfillment and material comfort. It has brought me together with fine people, good companions with whom I've shared the inevitable lot of all actors: flops and hits."

"However," he added. "It's my belief that one should decide for oneself when it is time to end one's stay."
Early in his career, O'Toole made waves on stage in several key Shakespearean roles, including an acclaimed turn as "Hamlet," before gaining fame in films such as "Goodbye, Mr. Chips," "The Ruling Class", "The Stunt Man" and "My Favorite Year."

Twenty Twelve, BBC Two, review Benjamin Secher reviews the return of BBC Two's spoof Olympics comedy Twenty Twelve. (TELEGRAPH) By Benjamin Secher 11:00PM BST 10 Jul 2012

Twenty Twelve (BBC Two), the pitch-perfect Bafta-nominated mockumentary set in the fictional offices of the Olympic Deliverance Committee, serves as a sort of pressure release valve for that anxiety, a very British invitation to laugh off the underlying dread that the Games might flop, even as the big moment approaches. It imagines a scenario in which the organisers are a bunch of jargon-spouting, dunderheaded, squabbling, inefficient, unprofessional – yet sympathetic – nincompoops; less a nest of vipers than a squadron of sloths.

Last night’s episode, the first in a final run of three, began with the long-suffering Head of Deliverance, Ian Fletcher (Downton Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville), calling his ragtag team to a breakfast meeting. “There are still a lot of things to get through if July 27th is to happen, on time, as planned,” intoned David Tennant's unwaveringly deadpan voice-over. Fletcher, his Play-Doh features squashed into a mask of concern, looked like he was going to be sick.

Ordered by the boss to “get ahead of the Games”, his staff duly went charging off down various blind alleys. Kay Hope (Amelia Bullmore), Head of Sustainability, could be found trying to convince the owner of Dagenham and Redbridge Football Club to take on the post-games lease of the giant Olympic stadium as an attempt to secure “exactly the kind of sustainably inclusive shared future we all want to see going forward”. The football guy pulled a face, then cut through the officialese. “At some point,” he said, “you’ve got to ask yourself, have we got a bloody great turkey on our hands?”

Benedict Cumberbatch's Villain In 'Star Trek 2' Revealed? NEWS BY KEVIN JAGERNAUTH | JULY 9, 2012 9:23 AM (PLAYLIST)

While speculation has run rampant about who exactly Benedict Cumberbatch is playing as the villain in "Star Trek 2" -- with some folks utterly convinced he's Khan (or some kind of relation) -- it looks like J.J. Abrams is throwing it back even further, should this report turn out to be on the level.

Doing the rounds for "Dredd," which premieres at Comic-Con this week, Karl Urban spoke to SFX and when asked about working with Cumberbatch on the sci-fi sequel, he let a bit of intel slip out saying: “He’s awesome, he’s a great addition, and I think his Gary Mitchell is going to be exemplary.”

As SFX notes, Gary Mitchell appeared in the original "Star Trek" TV series "Where No Man Has Gone Before." It was actually shot as a second pilot for the show, but wound up running as the third episode of the first season. Anyway, originally played by Gary Lockwood, Gary is a former Academy pal of Captain Kirk's, who gains telepathic and telekinetic, godlike powers. Spock advises Kirk to kill Mitchell, but he initially resists and tries to maroon him on a remote, industrial planet instead. But that effort fails and he's forced to take more drastic action.
