Tom Hardy Drives a Car For 85 Minutes, And It's Mesmerizing

VANITY FAIR
BY JULIE MILLER
JANUARY 17, 2014 2:49 PM

\

There are worse places to spend 85 minutes than inside a car with Tom Hardy, even he ignores you the entire time to make calls on speakerphone. This lesson comes courtesy of Steven Knight’s experimental Sundance entry Locke, during which Hardy does just that in real time without ever exiting his vehicle or speaking to another person face-to-face.

And despite those somewhat extreme constraints, the drama is compelling, genuinely moving, and suspenseful. It's a singular achievement for Knight, who also wrote the drama’s measured script, and Hardy, who manages to propel the story forward even though his butt is planted in the same position for an hour and a half.

The film opens on Hardy, a construction manager named Ivan Locke, as he steps into his BMW S.U.V. and leaves a work site. During each phone call Locke makes, the audience slowly discovers more about Hardy and his late-night excursion via trickles of exposition. Knight carefully unfurls more stakes about why Hardy’s car ride is so urgent, why his family is so disappointed in him, and why the timing of his trip is so damning for his construction company.

As the pressure on Hardy’s character mounts, the actor never resorts to showing his stress by going Nic Cage on us—raising his voice, banging on a steering wheel, or flipping off speeding passersby. Instead, he speaks in a Welsh accent so lilting and soothing that we would personally request it for our iOS if we lived in a future Her-type universe that allowed us to make these kinds of decisions. Even though he maintains composure (for the most part), and his position at the wheel for the entirety of the movie, Hardy, with Knight's direction, is able to summon legitimate suspense thanks to the script’s snaking personal revelations, which are masterfully laid out.

Benedict Cumberbatch 'Almost Turned Down Sherlock'

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS TIMES
By BEN SKIPPER | January 17, 2014 12:33 PM GMT

Sherlock

Benedict Cumberbatch has almost turned down the lead role in BBC hit TV series Sherlock.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly ahead of the show's third series on PBS in the United States, he admitted that he had "pause for thought" when first offered the part.

"My reservation was, 'Well, this is a very iconic character, there will be a lot of attention on it' - this was before I had had any significant success," he explained.

"I knew there would still be a lot of focus on it. And while I had done work, it wasn't stepping into the populist limelight like playing a character like Holmes."

He was eventually swayed by the passion of show-creators Steve Moffat and Mark Gattis – who also plays Sherlock's brother Mycroft in the show.

"I thought, 'If I'm going to do this - if I'm going to step into the limelight with a large leading role of iconic status - then I might as well do it with these people'," he said.

FX's Reimagined Fargo Series Features Sherlock's Martin Freeman as We've Never Seen Him

IGN
by Roth Cornet JANUARY 14, 2014

Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton in Fargo.

FX's new limited series, Fargo, is set to premiere in April. The 10-part limited series from producers Noah Hawley, Warren Littlefield, Joel and Ethan Coen, and Geyer Kosinski exists in the same universe as the original film, but tells an entirely original story.

Stars Martin Freeman (Lester Nygaard), Billy Bob Thornton (Lorne Malvo), Allison Tolman (Molly Solverson), and Colin Hanks (Gus Grimly) were on hand at today's TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour along with Littlefield and Hawley, who serves as showrunner and is writing all ten episodes, to discuss their Fargo-inspired drama.

"The movie is about the tension between comedy and tragedy, so it’s 'cragedy,'" Hawley joked when asked about the tone. His Fargo will operate in a similar vein, though rather than following the events that lead up to a tragedy, it will trace the aftermath.

"You know, Joel and Ethan said something about polite society as often being the most violent," Hawley recalled. "I was really interested in this idea of taking a man like Lester Nygaard, Martin’s character, who is so squeezed by life, and, you know, pushing him to the point where he might snap."

Freeman's Nygaard, a mild-mannered salesman, is only briefly exposed to Thornton's Malvo, a mysterious drifter who Hawley says, "is someone who represents wilderness." Yet it only takes that momentary interaction for an "infection" to take place in Nygaard's heart, head, and soul. The series is in some ways about the fallout of that one - seemingly chance - encounter wherein Malvo opens a portal to all of Nygaard's pent up rage.

Though the show opens with a bang, Hawley assures that they're, "heading toward a collision, a big collision, at the end of the thing" as well.

Thornton feels that Malvo is, "a little bit God, a little bit the devil" and stressed that he's not afraid to "take on a character who starts at a ten." For his part, Freeman was drawn to the strength of the script and the opportunity to do something entirely different.

"It wasn’t the idea of making a Fargo spinoff at all," Freeman said. "Enjoy the movie as I do and enjoy the Coens as I do. It could have been a terrible Fargo spinoff. Do you know what I mean? It could have used that as an inspiration and I could have read the script and it’s awful. It has to stand on its own, and I felt it did."

New romance? Michael Fassbender enjoyed Milan date with rumoured new girlfriend Madalina Ghenea on Wednesday

Actor Michael Fassbender and Romanian beauty, Madalina Ghenea looked very much together when they stepped out in Milan on Wednesday.

The pair held hands as they walked around Italy taking in the sights and at one point, the good-looking gentleman even put his arm protectively around the actress and model.

It's been a great week for the 36-year-old Irish star as he has just won his first-ever Oscar nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category for his role as a brutal slave owner in 12 Years A Slave.

Michael seemed as if he was trying to blend into the crowd as he stepped out with the actress and model and was sporting a fairly long beard.

Michael and Madalina were both in attendance at the 2013 Toronto Film Festival in September, where he promoted 12 Years a Slave and she premiered her movie, Dom Hemingway.

The twosome were reportedly both attendees at the Fox Searchlight Party during the festival, so it's possible that they met each other back then.

Madalina is not a stranger to dating members of the A-list and she was last linked to Scottish hunk Gerard Butler in 2013. In fact, the pair were seen cruising around Rome on foot in June.

Keira previously opened up to Harpers Bazaar about how liberating she has found marriage.
She said: ‘These words that you think beforehand, “That’s the reason I’ll never do it”… those words that you see as completely negative, and you suddenly see them as being incredibly positive, and that’s actually quite liberating and quite nice.’

Meanwhile, Keira is appearing alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in wartime drama The Imitation Game later this year. She is also stars in the film Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit alongside Chris Pine, Kenneth Branagh and Kevin Costner.

Keira plays Ryan’s love interest Cathy in the fifth film in the Jack Ryan franchise, in which Jack (Chris Pine) finds evidence of an imminent terrorist attack and economic catastrophe.

Gerard Butler: Michael Fassbender now Dating Madalina Ghenea

Michael Fassbender is reportedly dating Gerard Butler's ex-girlfriend, model Madalina Ghenea.

Fassbender is reportedly in a relationship with Romanian model and actress Madalina Ghenea, having moved on from Olympian Louise Hazel, who he was rumoured to have been dating since May last year.

According to The Sun newspaper, the 36-year-old star went on a trip to New Zealand with the beauty in November and spent the New Year with her in Romania.

He was keen to keep their love a secret after deciding to take older sister Catherine to the Golden Globes in Hollywood on Sunday (12.01.14), instead of his new love, where he missed out on an award for Supporting Actor (Drama, Musical or Comedy) to 'Dallas Buyers Club' star Jared Leto.

Former Peroni model Madalina, 25, dated Michael's '300' co-star Gerard for nine months from September 2012 and has also been linked to Leonardo DiCaprio.

Tom Hiddleston, interview: from Thor to a sell-out Coriolanus

THE TELEGRAPH

There is an electric atmosphere in the auditorium of the Donmar Warehouse – more befitting a rock concert than a Shakespearean tragedy – as the audience waits for a preview performance of Coriolanus to begin.

Five years since he last appeared on this small stage as a little-known actor, Tom Hiddleston is returning as a bona fide film star.

At 32 Hiddleston has achieved the kind of success that most young actors can only dream of. His performance as Captain Nicholls in Steven Spielberg’s 2011 adaptation of the National Theatre’s War Horse was by far the film’s most memorable. But it is as Loki in Marvel Comics’ blockbusting Thor franchise that Hiddleston has generated an obsessive following.

When he made a surprise appearance in character at the international Comic-Con convention in San Diego last summer, some members of the hysterical 7,000-strong crowd actually knelt in worship. At last count, his Twitter following was approaching a million.

‘It’s mad and bananas and amazing,’ Hiddleston tells me, over a restorative full English breakfast at a central London hotel, the morning after the Coriolanus preview. ‘But I can handle it for the simple reason that it genuinely feels like it’s not real. You know when you go to a fancy dress party and everyone looks incredible and there are crazy things hanging from the ceiling? For about five hours or so, you enter into another world and then, when you come out of it, you are sitting at home with a cup of tea and a biscuit and you’re thinking to yourself, “Well, that was weird. Fun, but weird.” That’s exactly what it feels like.’

Hiddleston gives a powerhouse performance,’ said Telegraph theatre critic Charles Spencer of his Coriolanus. Photo: Johan Persson

Hiddleston’s Coriolanus is a masterclass in layering; a celebrated warrior with matinee-idol looks who is part venomous despot, part isolated soul-searcher. For a full two and a half hours, the 6ft 1in actor commands the stage with a complexity that leaves the audience in silent rapture. ‘Hiddleston gives a powerhouse performance,’ was the Telegraph critic Charles Spencer’s verdict. ‘The mixture of charisma and emotional truth in his performance is very special indeed.’

Little wonder that Coriolanus will be only the second Donmar Warehouse production to be shown live in cinemas around the world when National Theatre Live broadcasts the January 30 performance. ‘It is a huge and slightly overwhelming privilege,’ Hiddleston says. ‘I feel incredibly excited about it.’

Producer defends Anna’s controversial Story Line in ‘Downton Abbey’ (SPOILERS)

MOVIE NEWS
BY WAJIH ASGHAR - JANUARY, 15TH 2014

Warning — Spoilers Ahead: If you haven’t seen Downton Abbey‘s Episode 2 of Season 4 yet then please do not read ahead!

In season 4 episode 2 of the famed British TV Drama, Downton Abbey, we saw Anna, the maid played by Joanne Froggart get raped by visiting valet Mr. Green. She was brutally attacked and the raped by the character. When she wrestled him off, she was viciously punched in the face and knocked down to the ground. She was then dragged to another room where she was raped by Mr. Green.

Downton Abbey

The course of events that took place during the episode left American audience in shock and awe and most of them went on to Twitter to express how angry they were at the incident.

The agitation of such emotions of the viewers might be due to the fact that nobody wants to Anna suffer, especially after she survived her husband’s wrongful imprisonment.

However, it seems that the executive producer, Gareth Neame was more objective about it. He told TV Guide: “Like the death of the Matthew Crawley character, audiences are very protective of these characters and view them as an extension of their own families.” He went on to defend the unfortunate and touchy story line that the events were not meant as a prop to shock audiences but were actually realistic depictions of a time in history. “It is not us just being flashy and trying to get attention.”

Tom Hiddleston Named Most Attractive Man of 2013…Again!

FASHION AND STYLE

(Photo : REUTERS/Eric Gaillard)

Tom Hiddleston was voted the Most Attractive Man of 2013 by Hello! magazine readers in a recent poll, pulling 64% of the votes to beat Orlando Bloom and Eddie Redmayne for the No. 1 spot.

Jamie Dornan, Hugh Dancy, Prince Carl Philip of Sweden, Prince Harry, Johnny Depp, Olly Murs and Bradley Cooper rounded out the top 10.

The “Thor: The Dark World” actor has won several similar titles in the past few months.

Hiddleston, 32, was voted E! Online’s 2013 Celebrity of the Year, beating out “The Vampire Diaries” star Ian Somerhalder, Robert Downey, Jr. and Kate Middleton for the title.

E! Online writes: “Why do we think Tom is our Celeb of the Year? Well, we don't have enough space to talk about how funny, charming and completely captivating he is, both onscreen and off. For example, this montage of all the times he just had to dance for his adoring public. That's basically all you need to see to fall in love with him.

“Plus, this year Tom gave us a villainous performance we won't soon forget as Loki in Thor: The Dark World. And based on all the great projects he has lined up and the fact that Tom seems to only get more intriguing as time goes on, we know 2014 will be a great year for Hiddleston, too!”

Hiddleston was also named the Sexiest Man Alive in a recent MTV poll, beating out Justin Timberlake, Chris Hemsworth, Pharrell Williams, Aaron Paul, Kendrick Lamar, Michael Fassbender and One Direction.
