Gerard Butler enjoys a leisurely lunch and a spin around town with a male friend By ELEANOR GOWER PUBLISHED: 19:37 EST, 5 October 2012 | UPDATED: 20:53 EST, 5 October 2012 (MAIL ON LINE)

He has a slew of movies set for release this year and 2013, so it was unsurprising that Gerard Butler was taking a bit of a break today before beginning his grueling round of promotional duties.

The Scottish actor joined a male friend for a bicycle ride through New York City before the men took lunch together al fresco.

Gerard, 42, and his companion were dressed remarkably similarly in blue jeans, pale shirt, trainers and sunglasses as they took off for a spin around the city.

Later over lunch, Gerard was spotted clutching a city map while enjoying a coffee.

His next film Chasing Mavericks, where he plays legendary Northern California big wave surfer Frosty Hesson is slated for release at the end of this month.

Gerard told surf.transworld.net that he had to train hard to get his stamina up for the movie.

'I did long-distances paddleboarding and then basically just surfing - learning how to be on a board, do turns, get up on a wave. Really just learning how to look like I knew what I was doing,' he said.

Jessica Chastain and Downton Abbey's Dan Stevens Make Broadway Debuts as The Heiress Begins Performances NEWS By Broadway.com Staff October 6, 2012 - 9:25AM (BROADWAY.COM)

Performances for the revival of Ruth and Augustus Goetz’s classic play The Heiress begin October 6 at Broadway's Walter Kerr Theatre, starring Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain and Downton Abbey’s Dan Stevens. Directed by Moises Kaufman, The Heiress will open officially on November 1, and will play a limited engagement through February 10, 2013.

Set in 18th century New York City, the play is based on Henry James’ novel Washington Square. The Heiress tells the story of Catherine Sloper (Chastain), an exceedingly wealthy but plain-looking woman who is pursued by a handsome, mysterious suitor (Stevens). Although Catherine is smitten, her father, Dr. Austin Sloper (David Strathairn), suspects the man is only after his daughter’s money. In addition to Chastain, Stevens and Strathairn, the production features two-time Tony winner Judith Ivey, as well as Virginia Kull, Kieran Campion, Dee Nelson, Molly Camp and Caitlin O’Connell.

Tom Hiddleston, Viv Albertine From The Slits & More Join Mystery Movie (INDIEWIRE)

BY KEVIN JAGERNAUTH
OCTOBER 5, 2012 9:43 AM

Before he was Loki, Tom Hiddleston was just another Brit actor trying to make it and early on he formed a bond with filmmaker Joanna Hogg. He appeared in her 2007 indie "Unrelated," and three years later starred in her sophomore feature "Archipelago." And while the world is now an oyster for the actor, and he likely has many more offers on his desk than ever before, he's reuniting with Hogg for her next film.

Hiddleston will feature alongside Viv Albertine -- former guitarist for punk legends The Slits who also contributed a song to "Archipelago" -- and conceptual artist Liam Gillick in the currently untitled movie. And if you're wondering what on Earth is bringing together a superhero villain, punk rocker and a Turner Prize nominee, your guess is as good as ours, as plot details are being kept on the down low. "I continue to be fascinated by the blurred line between the comic and the horrendous - but depicting this in an ordinary, everyday context which is closer to home, and therefore more terrifying," is all Hogg would venture in a press release.

Hugh Bonneville Downton Abbey ***SPOILERS***(INTERVIEW EXTRA)

Hugh Bonneville was pipped at the post for an award in the recent Emmys by fellow British actor Damian Lewis. But that doesn’t matter to the millions of viewers worldwide who are devouring Downton Abbey. With series three riding high in the ratings, TV Choice tracks down the legendary Lord Grantham…

How does it feel to be back?
It’s so exciting. You think you know these characters, and then Julian Fellowes will wrong-foot you. I had no idea what was going on with Robert’s story. To find he’d made the catastrophic decision to invest so heavily in the Canadian railway was very interesting. The continuation of Downton to the next generation is the only reason Robert’s on the planet so for him to have made that mistake is why Julian wrote it. Robert feels he’s failed totally in his responsibility.

What are the series highlights for you so far?
I was moved when Mary [Michelle Dockery] came down the stairs in her wedding dress. I don’t have a daughter but it was such a wonderfully strong image of me and Jim Carter — Mr Carson — watching her. One a real father, one a kind of father in his imagination. I could imagine what it would be like with your eldest daughter about to fly the nest.

Is there a sense that Robert sees the estate as his extended family?
Absolutely. He does care about them. Robert, by nature, is a fairly compassionate man who doesn’t judge too quickly, and gives people, like Thomas, a second chance.

Maggie Smith, actress: Women's Impact Report 2012: Creatives (CHICAGO TRIBUNE)

Variety Staff
Variety
3:05 a.m. CDT, October 5, 2012

Smith clearly never got the memo that said actresses after a certain age should just fade gracefully into the scenery. At 77, she has arguably become a bigger star than at any time in her career, thanks not only to her unique talent, but also to her work ethic and astute choice of roles. From the Dowager Countess of Grantham to Professor Minerva McGonagall, from a racist housekeeper in "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" to a retired diva in her latest pic "Quartet," she has cornered the market in formidable dames with an acid tongue and a heart of gold, whether they are grand aristocrats or salt-of-the-earth commoners. And it's box office and TV ratings gold. Perhaps uniquely for a character actress in her age bracket, her presence in a project drives international pre-sales and co-production deals, particularly in the U.S. and Australia.

Love Me Do: How The Beatles were set on the road to their first major recording Liverpool EchoOct 5 2012Add a comment Recommend (LIVERPOOL ECHO)

IN 3,000 books about the Beatles, Paul Murphy’s name never appears. Yet, but for him, the Beatles would never have recorded with George Martin and Parlophone and might never have recorded at all.

Paul was born in Walton Hospital in 1943 shortly before a famous Paul was born there. This was Paul McCartney, of course.

Paul Murphy was an early entrant in the Mersey music scene, recording She’s Got It with Johnny Guitar of Rory Storm & the Hurricanes at Philips Recording Studio in Kensington in 1957, months before the Quarrymen made their debut disc there.

Johnny, of course, was a member of Rory Storm & the Hurricanes, as was Paul for a time. He then embarked on a solo career and it was while he was performing at Liverpool’s Latin Quarter club that he was spotted by comedians Mike & Bernie Winters. The comedy duo recommended him to EMI’s Walter Ridley (who was later to reject the Beatles) and Ridley signed him to a recording contract.

He made his debut disc with Four & Twenty Thousand Kisses, a record he placed on the jukebox at the Zodiac club in Duke Street where Cilla Black worked in the evenings and where the Beatles, the Big Three and other bands used to hang out.

When he returned to London to pursue his career singing with the Cyril Stapleton Orchestra, he dropped into a hotel in Half Moon Street one day to have a drink at the bar. He noticed Brian Epstein, who he knew as manager of the NEMS record store in Liverpool.

Brian was rather dejected at the time. He had been extending his energy on seeking a recording contract for the Beatles, without much success. Every major label had turned him down – EMI, Pye, Piccadilly, Oriole, Philips, Decca – and people in Liverpool were jokingly saying that they’d end up on the Woolworths label.

He’d initially approached EMI and due to his status as a major record retailer met with Ron White, the general marketing manager. EMI’s A&R men at the time were Norrie Paramor, Wally Ridley, Norman Newell and George Martin. Paramor, Ridley and Newell, immediately turned them down and Martin was on holiday at the time, but it was doubtful whether he would have accepted a band that all his colleagues had rejected.

Although Brian managed to arrange a recording audition with Decca Records, Decca also turned them down. However, they at least gave Brian the tapes to their recording session, which he hoped to interest other record companies with, although there were only a few minor labels that he hadn’t yet approached.

Paul greeted Brian who said: “Hello Paul, I’m having terrible trouble with these,” and displayed some reel-to-reel tapes. When he explained to Paul his attempts to try and get A&R men to listen to the tapes, Paul told him not to be silly, because no one would listen to reel-to-reel tapes. He would need to have acetates made.

Paul mentioned the HMV Centre in Oxford Street and said “I’ll take you there, that’s where I have my own acetates made.”

So Paul took Brian along to the EMI Store where another example of serendipity occurred.

Colin Firth condemns 'cruelty' of Home Office decision to deport seriously ill woman to Nigeria CAILTIN GREEN THURSDAY 04 OCTOBER 2012 (THE INDEPENDENT)

Actor Colin Firth has condemned “the cruelty” of a Home Office decision to deport a seriously ill woman to Nigeria, where doctors say she may die because of the limited availability of affordable healthcare.

Roseline Akhalu, 49, has lived in the UK for eight years suffering from a kidney disease known as end stage renal failure.

She received a kidney transplant in 2009. In Nigeria she will "deteriorate very quickly" without access to medication, doctors say. Ms Akhalu recently completed a Masters Degree at the University of Leeds.

The Home Office denied her application on the basis that there is available treatment in Nigeria. However Ms Akhalu's legal team claim the treatment can be prohibitively expensive.

Firth, said that the case was "a question of saving a woman's life".

"In trying to grasp the cruelty of this decision one has to ask, why is there a need for a campaign?" Firth said. "Our Home Secretary has effectively condemned an innocent woman to death - a decision surely repugnant to every person in this country. It should be reversed immediately and Rose should be allowed to live."

Emily Blunt is Harper’s Bazaar Australia’s November cover star ROSEMARY MAC CABE (IRISH TIMES)

Have you seen Looper? After a helluva lot of media hype – including a bizarrely confrontational interview that Joseph Gordon-Levitt did with Matt Cooper – I went to check it out on Monday night in the Savoy, my new local (I love those plush curtains!). I’d give it a solid 3.5 stars (I always feel like three stars is such a fence-sitting position). I’m not raving about it, like so many people are, but I did really enjoy it, despite Gordon-Levitt’s odd facial prosthetics. Emily Blunt puts in a seriously amazing performance.

Henry Cavill: New Superman movie will be 'realistic' like Batman trilogy Writer David S Goyer compares his Superman reboot to Christopher Nolan's Batman movies (NME)

The writer of new Superman movie Man Of Steel has compared the reboot to Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy.

David S Goyer scripted Man Of Steel based on a story he devised with Nolan, who also serves as a producer on the Superman reboot. Goyer and Nolan previously worked together on the stories for Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises.

Discussing Man Of Steel at the Rome Film Festival, Goyer said: "What Christopher Nolan and I have done with Superman is try to bring the same naturalistic approach that we adopted for the Batman trilogy. We always had a naturalistic approach, we want our stories to be rooted in reality, like they could happen in the same world we live in."

Continuing, Goyer revealed that "this doesn't necessarily mean we will make a dark movie", but insisted that it does stop the script being "cartoonish". He explained: "Working on this reboot, we are thinking about what would happen if a story like this one actually happened. How would people react to this? What impact would the presence of Superman in the real world have?"
