Max Irons stars as Edward IV during England's War of the Roses in "The White Queen," which premieres Aug. 10. His 64-year-old father has had explicit sex scenes in 1988's "Dead Ringers," 1992's "Damage" and most recently in the Showtime series "The Borgias."

DAILY REPORTER, GREENFIELD, INDIANA

BEVERLY HILLS, California — Another popular British TV series is getting exported to the U.S. to hopefully grip American viewers.

"Broadchurch" is a murder mystery drama centered on the killing of a young boy in a small town.

Cast members Olivia Colman, Jodie Whittaker and David Bradley promoted the show at Thursday's BBC America presentation as part of the annual Television Critics Association summer press tour. "Broadchurch" also stars David Tennant of "Dr. Who" fame.

The actors shot most of the series' eight episodes not knowing who the killer was, or if any of them would end up as the perpetrator.

"We had bets going on all the way through. In our makeup van we had everybody's photograph up and you put a sticker on who you thought it was," said Colman who plays a detective. "I only got one and I was disappointed," she joked.

The series also explores the events leading up to why the murder took place and each character has an arc. Whittaker says the show could make parents think about how much they really know about their kids.

"You don't know everything that's going on in your child's life and I think that's highlighted. Even children have secrets and have friendships or arguments with people you don't know (about)."

IT'S the battle of the period crime dramas tonight as Channel 10 goes toe-to-toe with Nine in the war of the underworld ratings.

From across the pond comes UK series Ripper Street, starring Matthew Macfayden as Detective Inspector Edmund Reid, pounding the cobblestones of London in 1889 looking for the crooked and corrupt in a community still jumping at every shadow thanks to the crimes of the infamous Jack the Ripper.

Nine's latest offering in the Underbelly franchise, Underbelly: Squizzy, features Jared Daperis as the nation's first celebrity criminal.

Ripper Street was a massive success in the UK, pulling in seven million viewers, and is well into shooting its second season, while Squizzy is the sixth instalment in an Underbelly franchise, which has been a consistent ratings hit.

The Underbelly franchise may be famed for its darkness, but in terms of pure menace and drama, it's the opening episode of Ripper Street that takes the honours over Squizzy.

MyAnna Buring, who plays brothel madam Long Susan in Ripper Street says it's "a far cry from Downton Abbey", where Australian audiences last saw her as a scheming maid.

"Don't be fooled into thinking it's a period drama - this is a crime show," she warns. "Long Susan scares the hell out of me.

Howard Gordon Talks Homeland, Bringing Back 24 & Casting Sean Bean In TNT’s Legends

ACCESS HOLLYWOOD

BEVERLY HILLS, CALIF. -- “Homeland” is gearing up to return to Showtime for its third season this September and Executive Producer Howard Gordon hinted at the drama ahead.

“The focus this season really is the aftershocks of last year,” Howard told AccessHollywood.com at TNT’s 25th anniversary bash following Wednesday’s portion of the Television Critics Association Summer Tour in Beverly Hills.

Gordon said nothing is set yet, so they are keeping those writers’ room ideas under wraps. He was happy, however, to open up about his new show coming to TNT – “Legends,” starring former “Game of Thrones” star Sean Bean.

“He’s electric,” Gordon said of casting Bean as his leading man, Martin Odum, an agent working for the Deep Cover Operations division of the FBI.

“I had been a fan of his for so many years,” Gordon said. “The thing about Sean is he is extraordinary and charismatic and he’s a movie star, but he’s an actor and this part is about being an actor.”

And Gordon praised Bean’s performance in Season 1 of “Thrones.”

“It was transcendent and he has that kind of dignity and that kind of grace and the pathos that I think audiences have connected with and I hope this is a part and a role that really reengages the audiences with him,” Gordon said.

“Legends” premieres on TNT in 2014.

"The director told me, ‘bring what you want to the movie but we need somebody to go up against the rock,'" Stevenson explained.

"I thought ‘well he’s a big boy…’ I’ve got about a half a centimetre height on him but his arms are the size of my legs!"

"But Dwayne was terrific – he is a consummate athlete and a consummate professional and with a couple of big guys on set together you need to know how to dance! We spent a lot of time on our fighting scenes and we took a couple of blows each; but of course we just shrugged it off.

'Fifty Shades of Grey' Movie Casting: Top 3 Contenders for Christian Grey Include Matt Bomer vs Henry Cavill, Ian Somerhalder Out of Running? E.L. James Hints News

Fans are no doubt furious to hear that one of their top 3 contenders for Christian Grey in the upcoming "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie is out of the running: Ian Somerhalder.

According to Us Weekly, sources said that E.L. James admitted that the 34-year-old "Vampire Diaries" star was out of the picture for being cast as 27-year-old sexy billionaire and BDSM-crazed Christian Grey.

"E.L. was at a Comic-Con party July 20 telling people the part won't go to Ian," a source said.

That leaves the most two favorite top contenders, Matt Bomer and Henry Cavill, still in the running [as far as fans are concerned] for the top role in the highly anticipated film. In other news, another fan-favorite, though not as big, Garrett Hedlund, turned down the role of Christian already.

"Doing a possible trilogy was too big a commitment, and producers wouldn't let him do just one film," said the source of Kirsten Dunst's boyfriend. So fans of the "On the Road" actor will not get to see him in the film either.

Hobbit blogging: The little one's a psycho (and one of them is Richard Armitage) STUFF.CO.NZ

Facebook Three Thorins but which one is actor Richard Armitage?

Although Jackson will be finished with his actors by the end of today, he still has a lot of post-production work to complete on the second instalment of the trilogy, The Desolation of Smaug, and the final part, There and Back Again.

Still, even with all the pressure on him, he hasn't lost his sense of humour.

"I asked the various Thorins to pose just before they headed off to lunch. One of these is Richard Armitage, and two of them are not. It's your guess ... The one in the middle is a little psycho," he wrote.

"I am looking forward to making movies with everyone the same height in the future."

Jackson first began filming Tolkien's works in October 1999, with The Lord of the Rings.

The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies have given thousands of Kiwis a start in the film industry, and a huge boost to New Zealand's tourism industry.

However, the production has always been smooth. A complicated fight over the film rights, a fallout between Jackson and the studio heads, the bankruptcy of MGM and union dispute almost stopped the book getting to the screen.

WHAT'S ON STAGE

As previously rumoured, Harry Potter star Rupert Grint will make his stage debut in a revival of Jez Butterworth's play Mojo later this year.

According to the Daily Mail, Grint will star alongside Brendan Coyle (Downton Abbey), Ben Whishaw (Skyfall, Hamlet) and Daniel Mays (Trelawny of the Wells, Mrs Biggs) in the production.

Brendan Coyle will return to the stage after a gap due to his Downton Abbey commitments. An accomplished stage actor, he won an Olivier Award in 1999 for Conor McPherson's The Weir (the Donmar's recent revival of which is transferring  to the West End in January).

Ben Whishaw rose to prominence after starring in Trevor Nunn's acclaimed Old Vic production of Hamlet directly out of drama school. He has since appeared on stage in Mike Bartlett's Cock at the Royal Court and, most recently, Peter and Alice opposite Judi Dench in the West End.

James McAvoy Is The Doctor To Daniel Radcliffe's Igor In New Frankenstein Movie

CINEMA BLEND
Author: Katey Rich
published: 2013-07-25 13:58:11

You know how there are all these rumors about how Tom Cruise hires co-stars who are willing to slouch or who are also vertically challenged so he doesn't look so short onscreen? Those are the kind of crazy lengths you have to go to when you're a very small A-lister, but James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe have come up on a much easier solution-- find short actors you like, team up, look totally tall in comparison to each other onscreen. Deadline reports that McAvoy, who is 5'7, has been cast opposite Radcliffe, who is 5'5, in a new adaptation of Frankenstein. Yes, another one. Radcliffe will play the assistant Igor-- no word on whether it comes with a hunchback this time-- and McAvoy will be the titular doctor.

Radcliffe first signed up for the project back in February, and casting for the Frankenstein role started last month, with up-and-comers like Toby Kebbell and Jack Huston eyed for the part. McAvoy is considerably more famous, and already has another very successful franchise at the same studio with X-Men: First Class and the upcoming Days of Future Past. It's surprising when a studio spends some time eyeing up-and-comers before deciding to stick with a more established actor, especially one who's likely far more expensive, but perhaps the appeal of teaming up Professor X and Harry Potter was too much to resist.

The cover for Helen Fielding's upcoming Bridget Jones novel has been unveiled.

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy is published in hardback by Jonathan Cape on October 10 and is priced at £18.99. It is available to pre-order now.

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy finds the title character in today's London attempting to juggle "drunken texting, the skinny jean, the disastrous email cc, total lack of Twitter followers, and TVs that need 90 buttons and three remotes to simply turn on".

Asked about the prospect of a third movie in the series, Firth said in April: "Unfortunately, it might be a bit of a long wait.

"I wouldn't say that it's completely dead in the water, but the way it's going you might be seeing Bridget Jones's granddaughter's story being told by the time we get there."

Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge: The Royal Baby Named!

by Alexis L. Loinaz
E.Entertainment

Royal Highness was born at 4:24 p.m. (British Summer Time) in the Lindo Wing of St. Mary's Hospital in London, weighing 8 pounds, 6 ounces, bestowing the monarchy with its third royal in line to the throne and bringing to a full circle the public's potent fairy-tale fascination that began with the couple's drawn-out courtship and culminated in their storybook wedding in 2011.

As befitting the pomp and pageantry of aristocratic tradition, the baby's arrival—and the eventual announcement of its gender—was heralded via a royal declaration signed by Kate's doctor, taken to Buckingham Palace via police escort, and placed on an easel outside the palace, similar to the protocol that was observed when William was born 31 years ago.

William was by his wife's side when they went to the hospital, he was present during the child's birth and then he spent the night at St. Mary's with Kate and their newborn son.

Man Of Steel star Henry Cavill appeared to be on his way to board a flight when he was spotted by a TMZ camera man. The TMZ cameraman peppered Henry Cavill with questions ranging from George Zimmerman becoming a hero by helping rescue a family of four from an overturned car to if Batman was going to use Kryptonite to beat him.

Instead of getting angry or annoyed, Henry Cavill even appeared to be amused by the whole situation. At one point, Cavill even laughed and said, “You’re just making this up as you go along, aren’t you?”

Bill Condon’s The Fifth Estate, the film about Julian Assange and WikiLeaks, will open the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

The film, starring Daniel Brühl and Benedict Cumberbatch as Julian Assange, follows the story of WikiLeaks, the website dedicated to exposing government corruption and abuses of power.

“Information is the potent currency of our time, and we’ve found a film that charts just how volatile it can be,” said Cameron Bailey, artistic director of TIFF. “With The Fifth Estate, this yera’s festival kicks off with an electric, timely drama that promises to get people talking. We’re thrilled to welcome Bill Condon back to Toronto with another terrific film.”

The Fifth Estate follows the story of Julian Assange and his partner Daniel Domscheit-Berg (Brühl) as they team up to become underground watchdogs, and the eventual consequences of exposing state secrets and corporate crimes.

Director Condon was last at the festival in 2004, with his film Kinsey, starring Liam Neeson. His first TIFF film was Sister, Sister in 1987.

“On behalf of the cast and filmmaking team, we are really honoured to open the festival,” said Condon. “Toronto has such enthusiastic audiences and I look forward to sharing the film with them.”

The Fifth Estate is based on the book Inside WikiLeaks, by Domscheit-Berg, as well as WikiLeaks by David Leigh and Luke Harding. It will be have its North American release on October 18.
