Benedict Cumberbatch told 'not to go into acting' by leading Harrow drama teacher

Benedict Cumberbatch (ringed) as Petruchio in The Taming of the Shrew at the Globe Theatre in 1994

Benedict Cumberbatch was encouraged not to enter the ‘tough business’ of acting by his drama teacher Martin Tyrrell, according to fellow schoolboy thespian.

The Oscar-nominated actor, pictured in The Sunday Times today playing Petruchio in a school production of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew at the Globe Theatre, greatly impressed in the performance.

However he was advised not to pursue a career with his “dazzling” talent, according to Alexander Gifford, who performed alongside the young Cumberbatch in the play.

Mr Gifford, now a theatre director and playwright, told The Sunday Times: “Benedict was the complete star of the acting scene at Harrow and funnily enough I remember in that show...it was like he had gone to a whole new level and had a vitality on stage and an uninhibited freedom that was dazzling.

"I do remember our drama teacher, Martin Tyrrell, advising him not to go into acting because it was such a tough business.

“We were a really rich crop of young actors. We had Laurence Fox and Patrick Kennedy, and that was down to Mr Tyrrell. Benedict stood out as being preternaturally gifted."

Henry Cavill new James Bond: Superman actor being groomed as the next 007?

CHRISTIAN TODAY
Snooky Grawls 27 June 2015

It is that time once again for Ian Fleming's James Bond character where the search for a new actor to play 007 is up in the air.

Daniel Craig is the current one portraying the British Super Spy and word around is that the one likely to succeed him is Henry Cavill.

Should Cavill indeed be blessed of taking over from Craig, it will mark the first time that an actor with high regard would be chosen to play the role.

Previous actors who took on the role of 007 were virtual unknowns. In fact, portraying James Bond was seen as a springboard for their career.

Among the actors who previously played James Bond include Sean Connery, David Niven, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Craig.

So will Cavill be up to the task?

For the record, Cavill had auditioned for the role before. This was back in 2005 when he tried out together with Daniel Craig. At that time, producers felt he was too young for the role (he was only 22 years old at the time) so Craig eventually got the part.

After 10 years and Cavill having a following of his own, all that has changed. He has the age and most importantly the looks that James Bond had always been associated with, a lady's man if you will.

So does this make him a shoe-in to be the next 007?

While that remains up in the air, Cavill is set to debut in another remake – The Man from U.N.C.L.E which is set to debut this coming August. The upcoming film may somehow help critics if Cavill is fit to be the next James Bond, being a spy-themed movie.

Thor 3: Ragnarok News: Loki's death unlikely as Tom Hiddleston gets multi-movie contract with Marvel; Kenneth Branagh to helm final installment?

VENTURE CAPITAL POST
June 22, 2015

Thor 3: Ragnarok is still approximately 2 years away from its release, but as early as now, various speculations surfaced as to the possible plot of the final installment of the Thor franchise. Also, Marvel is rumored to be eyeing on director Kenneth Branagh to helm the film.

The end of days is near for Asgard as Thor: Ragnarok is slowly approaching and despite that no official synopsis has been released for the film as of yet, many theories have emerged as to the possible direction the film might go.

The fire giant "Surtur" who causes destruction is said to likely appear in Thor 3: Ragnarok. Surtur will burn the Birfrost which will lead to the destruction of Asgard. In the mythology, the god Odin fights a giant wolf and dies. Thor also faces a giant snake and ends up dead. Loki comes face to face with Heimdall and later dies, however in the comics, Thor rips Loki's head off due to his treachery.
Although Loki's death may be possible, many speculate that it is also somewhat unlikely as Tom Hiddleston, who plays Loki, still has a multi-movie contract with Marvel.

Meanwhile, there are also reports that Thanos might make an appearance in Thor 3: Ragnarok, and that the god of thunder, Thor, might come into a battle against Thanos and Surtur.

Is Matthew Macfadyen attached to new MI5 Spy comic thriller Mindhorn?

CHORTLE

Julian Barratt is writing his first feature film.

The Boosh star has teamed up with comedian Simon Farnaby, best known for Horrible Histories and Yonderland, to write the comic thriller Mindhorn.

It revolves around a former MI5 spy whose eye has been replaced by an ‘optical lie detector’, which means he can literally see the truth. He now lives in the Isle of Man, where he is a crack plain-clothes detective.

BBC Films have developed the project, which is being produced by Ridley and Tony Scott’s company Scott Free in association with Boosh programme-makers Baby Cow.

Filming starts on July 27 on the Isle of Man, which has a development fund run through Pinewood Studios to attract such projects.

No casting has yet been announced, although Ripper Street and Spooks actor Matthew Macfadyen has been rumoured to be attached to the film.

Benedict Cumberbatch, James McAvoy... was Starter for 10 the film that kicked off a new era for British movie stars?

WHAT'S ON
17:46, 23 JUNE 2015
BY KATHRYN WILLIAMS

It was the story of a working-class underdog in 1980s Bristol, but the star-studded cast of 2006 film Starter for 10 have become huge global stars in their own right.

The film followed student Brian Jackson (James McAvoy) as he embarked on his first year at Bristol University, battling cliched opposition from peers as he attempted to get on the popular TV show, University Challenge.

So, let's see which familiar faces got their Starter for 10 correct with the film:

James McAvoy

Now known for his role as a young Professor Charles Xavier in the X Men series, Scottish actor McAvoy was already familiar to fans of Paul Abbott's television show, Shameless, in which he co-starred with his now-wife, Anne-Marie Duff.

He's also impressed in movies such as The Last King of Scotland, Atonement and the adaptation of Irvine Welsh's novel Filth.

Benedict Cumberbatch

He's our Sherlock Holmes here in Wales thanks to Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss' re-imagining of Arthur Conan Doyle's character for the BBC hit, but back in 2006 (or 1985) Cumbers was the snotty nosed team-mate of McAvoy's Brian.

Since 2010 he's been filming Sherlock in and around Wales, but he's also gained notoriety from Hollywood thanks to roles in The Imitation Game, Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy, 12 Years a Slave and as the voice of dragon Smaug in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

 Mark Gattiss

Any fan of comedy would recognise Gatiss as one of the League of Gentlemen, but it wasn't until Sherlock he became a household name.

In the 1980s movie he portrayed University Challenge host Bamber Gascoigne who puts the main characters to the test on national TV.

In Sherlock (which he co-created) Gatiss also plays the titular character's brother, Mycroft.

Gatiss also has a small recurring role in Game of Thrones.

‘Poldark’ Series Premiere Recap: Part 1

WALL STREET JOURNAL
By  SARENE LEEDS

From left: Aidan Turner as Ross Poldark and Heida Reed as Elizabeth in “Poldark” (C) Robert Viglasky/Mammoth Screen for MASTERPIECE

Thank you, PBS and “Masterpiece.”

One week after Jon Snow suffered multiple stabbings at the hands of his fellow Night’s Watchmen, we have been able to put aside our mourning for the “Game of Thrones” character and his ambiguous future. Because arriving on the TV landscape tonight is another handsome, brooding hero blessed with luscious long locks to keep us company on these lonely summer Sunday evenings.

After a successful run in the U.K. earlier this year, the BBC drama “Poldark,” based on the series of novels by Winston Graham, has premiered on PBS’s “Masterpiece.” And its timing could not be more impeccable: With sweeping epics like “Game of Thrones,” “Outlander” and “Downton Abbey” all currently on hiatus, “Poldark” nicely fills the prestige-television void, especially given the promise of lots of shirtless scenes featuring star Aidan Turner.

Irish actor Turner, known primarily for his role as Kili in “The Hobbit” films, is protagonist Ross Poldark, an 18th-century Redcoat soldier newly returned to his home in southwestern England after fighting on the losing side of the Revolutionary War. For those already familiar with the “Poldark” books and the 1970s TV series of the same name that aired on the original “Masterpiece Theatre,” tonight’s premiere episode may have been a bit of a drag as it focused on setting the scene and introducing us to the main characters. As a result, “Part 1″ was heavy on the exposition and light on the plot development, but for those of us who have not read the novels or seen the Seventies “Poldark” (like this recapper), the episode got us fully prepped for what’s ahead over the next six episodes.

The series opens with a prologue in 1781 Virginia, where landed gentry member Ross Poldark and his Redcoat army are ambushed by a battalion of colonial patriots. Two years later, Ross comes home to Cornwall, a deep scar now marking the side of his face and giving the camera a very good reason to fulfill a close-up-on-Aidan Turner quota for every episode. To his dismay, Ross learns that he’s been presumed dead since the Virginia attack, so his welcome-home party consists of: 1. The news that his father has died, and, to quote “Titanic” gold digger Ruth Dewitt Bukater, “left behind nothing but a legacy of bad debts hidden by a good name” (although in Ross’s case, the debts aren’t so hidden). And, 2. His beloved not-quite-fiancée Elizabeth (Heida Reed), believing Ross was dead, has moved on and is about to marry his milquetoast cousin, Francis (Kyle Soller).

What’s an impoverished gentleman to do? Despite everyone pleading with him to get lost – especially his Uncle Charles (Warren Clarke), who really doesn’t want Ross messing up his son Francis’s marriage to Elizabeth – Ross is determined to rebuild his father’s dilapidated estate and reopen his family’s copper mine. Is it because he wants to win back Elizabeth (who marries Francis in the premiere episode more out of a sense of duty than love)? Possibly. There’s a lot of “will they or won’t they” in “Part 1,” with a frustrated Ross ultimately spurning the newlywed Elizabeth, telling her “We can never be friends!” But once Turner’s co-star Eleanor Tomlinson appears on the scene midway through the episode, the much more important “Poldark” love triangle is set.

Tomlinson portrays Demelza Carne, a local girl whose miner father’s favorite pastime is beating on his only daughter. To get away from her brutish dad, Demelza enjoys dressing in her brother’s tattered shirt and breeches and running off to town with her best pal, her dog, Garrick. A meet cute between Ross and Demelza occurs during the town’s Market Day when he rescues Garrick – and the girl – from a cruel dogfight, and soon enough, Ross is offering Demelza a position in his house as a kitchen maid. Given the fact that Tomlinson’s name immediately follows Turner in the credits, it is not a spoiler to say that Demelza’s drudge status doesn’t last long.

****

At this early stage of the series, I’m not sure I’m sold yet on the story lines, but as I said earlier, the plot needed to give way to exposition for the premiere episode. What I am loving so far is the sheer abundance of eye candy that “Poldark” provides – and I’m not just talking about Aidan Turner and the seemingly endless shots of his gorgeously glowering visage (he also cuts a fine figure in 18th-century fashions, including those three-cornered hats): The series serves as a free travelogue for the breathtaking Cornwall coastline – this writer is severely berating herself for only going so far as Devon on a trip to southwestern England many years ago – which is just as important a character to the narrative as Ross, Demelza and Elizabeth. If you’re still debating checking out “Poldark,” there’s no shame in coming for the scenery (whether it’s Cornwall or Turner), because chances are you will stay for the story.

“Poldark” airs Sunday nights on “Masterpiece” on PBS at 9 p.m. Follow our recaps all season long here. Follow Sarene Leeds on Twitter.

Downton Abbey season 6: Tom Branson returns in new pictures from set

SUNDAY EXPRESS
By NEELA DEBNATH
PUBLISHED: 12:55, Thu, Jun 18, 2015 | UPDATED: 14:34, Thu, Jun 18, 2015

Tom Branson on the set of Downton Abbey

Tom, who is the husband of the late Lady Sybil, was headed to America with their daughter when we last saw him in the Downton Christmas special but it seems that he is back for one last hurrah.

Irish actor Allen, 34, was spotted on filming on set in scenes featuring what appears to be a motor race, suggesting Tom could have a hand in helping out with the cars thanks to his mechanical skills.

Filming took place at the Brooklands Museum Near Weybridge, Surrey which was the former site of the Brooklands racing circuit and aerodrome.

There were plenty of extras dressed in 1920s costumes, suggesting that the series will still be set in the same era rather than doing any jumps forward in time as it has previously between series.

Actors Matthew Goode, who plays Henry Talbot, and Tom Cullen, who stars as Lord Gillingham, were also spotted filming scenes, hinting that the pair could be racing in a bid to win Lady Mary's (Michelle Dockery) affections.

Only last week the "downstairs" cast reunited to film scenes in Oxfordshire that saw the characters playing cricket together on their say off from looking after the Abbey.

It was announced that the series will be receiving a special Bafta honour later this year for its outstanding global success and flying the flag for British drama around the globe.

6 Tom Hiddleston Videos From Before He Was Famous That Show The Dude Always Had What It Takes To Make It — VIDEOS

BUSTLE
JACLYN ANGLIS

1 DAY AGO ENTERTAINMENT

You probably knew him first as his Avengers character Loki, but Tom Hiddleston has expanded far beyond the breakout role. Fresh off several appearances in mini-series and even a cameo in Muppets Most Wanted, Hiddleston is in the midst of a bunch of new projects that will come out soon. It’s an exciting time to be a fan of Tom Hiddleston, there is no doubt about it. But some fans might be wondering about what the actor was like on camera before he blew up and got really famous.

 1. The Life And Adventures Of Nicholas Nickleby

In this 2001 television movie, Hiddleston portrayed a lord. Though it was far from being a starring role, it is one of his first notable debuts. Can you believe how much younger he looks here?

2. The Gathering Storm

In this clip from a 2002 television movie, Hiddleston plays Randolph Churchill in a love story examining Winston Churchill and his wife’s troubled times. Apparently, he was just 21 years old when this came out. Whoa!

3. Cymbeline

Hiddleston bursting into song in character at a Shakespearan play is the video you didn’t know that you needed to watch. Though it is short, this clip from his 2007 performance will make your entire day. Maybe even your week.

Watch Alan Rickman Get Revenge On Jimmy Fallon

CINEMA BLEND
BY JESSICA RAWDEN

”balloons

A couple of years ago, Alan Rickman watched as Jimmy Fallon and Benedict Cumberbatch got up to shenanigans in a so-called “Rickman-off,” in which both took turns doing impressions of the famous actor. Last night, Rickman actually appeared on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon and got some revenge in the form of helium. Check out the amusing video, below.

Alan Rickman’s a man who is well aware of the impressions people do of him, and has personally encountered Fallon’s own sketch poking fun at his manner of speaking. So, he brought some helium as a proper “truth teller,” which basically gave him the satisfaction of watching Fallon make a goof of himself on late night television, just as Fallon made a goof of him a couple of years ago. Fallon, luckily, doesn’t mind humorous revenge plots, sucking in the helium and apologizing to the Harry Potter franchise actor, who eventually joins him in the helium fun. Plus, balloons!

6 Things You Need to Know About Poldark's Aidan Turner

MASTERPIECE

Irish actor Aidan Turner may not yet be a household name stateside, but when Poldark rides onto your screens, you will definitely want to know anything and everything about the star that took the UK by storm. Start with these six things you need to know about Aidan Turner.

1. Dancing With the Star
Long before dancing in the fictitious assembly rooms of Cornwall, Turner was nimbly leading partners across the dance floors throughout the UK as a competitive dancer, having trained for a decade in Latin American and Ballroom dancing! Tango, anyone?

2. No Account
Unlike his castmates @RubyBentalland @ReedHeida, Turner doesn't have a social presence. "I don't do social media—maybe people should know that, because there's probably a bunch of fake Twitter things out there, Instagrams and all that, and Facebooks. I don't do any of it."

Aidan Turner

3. Shorn Free
Turner's mass of dark, windswept, romantic curls are so swoon-worthy, they've even inspired their own Twitter presence! But are they real? "We had hair extensions for a little while until it grew, and then we took them out. Yeah, it really is my hair, as wild as it is!"

4. A Short List of One
Poldark's executive producer, Debbie Horsfield, wanted Aidan and only Aidan for the lead role. Turner described being offered the part, without so much as a screen test, to the New York Post: "There was a knock on the door and the FedEx guy was there with the first two Poldark books and all eight scripts for the series. I thought, 'What on earth is this?' Then my agent calls and says there’s an offer for me to play the part of Ross Poldark. That had never happened to me before. It was surreal."

It's a girl: Reports suggest Keira Knightley and husband  welcomed a baby girl in May.  They have yet to comment on the birth

She has kept mum since giving birth to her first child with husband James Righton last month.

Now reports suggest Keira Knightley is the proud mother of a baby girl.

People claims the 30-year-old actress welcomed a daughter, although no more details were made available.

She explained: 'Somebody said to me the other day, the problem with boys is - sorry, this is horrible - but when you’re changing their nappies, you can get the wee in your face... I never knew that before, so it was terrifying.

'And apparently they roll as well, so you have to try to stop them while you’re trying to grab something else in order to stop them peeing in your face. So that sounds quite interesting.'

Tom Hiddleston reveals character in Crimson Peak, Loki's role in Thor 3; Actor in casual terms with Elizabeth Olsen

VENTURE CAPITAL

Tom Hiddleston

Tom Hiddleston is engaged in a lot of projects right now. He is currently doing Crimson Peak and will start filming Thor 3: Ragnarok Film in the coming days. This favorite villain may confirm what is eating much of his time but not Elizabeth Olsen.

First on his plate is his soon to release movie Crimson Peak. This new film Guillermo Del Toro is a gothic romance in which people can expect the film to be kinky and shocking- as Del Toro puts it. Tom Hiddleston plays the character of Sir Thomas Sharpe whom Hiddleston called the antihero.
Tom described further Sir Thomas Sharpe as "the most morally ambiguous or complex figure in the story, because ... he's genuinely caught in-between people and in-between conflicting emotions and is trying to find the best route through a very, very, difficult tangle of what people need from him and want from him and what he feels is his responsibility to those people" when he was interviewed by Collider. Prior to filming, Tom Hiddleston got so busy studying the 10 pages biography that Director Del Toro gave his actors in preparation for their characters.

As for Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Hiddleston is not ditching Elizabeth because as of press time no one could really prove that the two are seriously hooking up as reported by Youth Health. Just like everyone already knew, the two were just casual and were keeping in touch when not together because the two have been doing a project of Hank Williams' "I Saw The Light". Tom is still very much in the list of the most Eligible Bachelor though rumors about him being link to his co-stars in the film circulate in the internet.

Crimson Peak is scheduled to be in Theaters this October 2015 but as for "I Saw The Light" there has no specific schedule to date.

By JOANNA CRAWLEY FOR MAILONLINE

Epic tale: The movie follows Crowhurst who gave up his life with Clare and their four children to put everything, including all their finances, into the first Golden Globe yacht race

They're two of the country's finest actors and he's an acclaimed Brit filmmaker and now Rachel Weisz and Colin Firth are teaming up with The Theory of Everything director James Marsh.

The talented trio have been spotted shooting scenes for their new film in Devon this week.

Marsh is directing Rachel and Colin in the as yet untitled Donald Crowhurst big screen biopic, which follows the true story of Crowhurst's attempt to circumnavigate the globe in the 1960s.

Nice look! While Rachel flashed her legs in a tartan mini and wellies, Colin was more appropriately dressed in yellow waders

The production has set up camp on the Devon coast for the first few weeks of filming, with Rachel and Colin, who play Crowhurst and his wife Clare, spotted in costume on the beach on Wednesday.

45-year-old Rachel was cast after initial discussions with Kate Winslet fell through, and the actress looked to be getting stuck into her role as the cameras rolled today.

The stunning star was in period costume, wearing a chic trench coat teamed with a green print headscarf and retro round shades for her scenes.

Leading man Colin, 54, meanwhile was dressed for the adventure in bright yellow waders, worn over a smart shirt and tie.

Marsh's movie follows the epic tale of Crowhurst who gave up his life with Clare and their four children to put everything, including all their finances, into the first Golden Globe yacht race.

The film also has a stellar support cast including David Thewlis as Crowhurst's press agent and Broadchurch star Jonathan Bailey, who is starting to make a name for himself on the big screen following last year's Testament of Youth.

Downton Abbey's Michelle Dockery to star opposite Dominic West in Les Liaisons Dangereuses

Michelle Dockery to be in Les Liaisons Dangereuses

DOWNTON ABBEY actress Michelle Dockery is set to return to the stage, starring alongside Dominic West in a stage version of Les Liaisons Dangereuses.

The 34-year-old, best known for playing Lady Mary Crawley in the ITV period drama, will play Madame de Tourvel while West will portray her would-be seducer Vicomte de Valmont at London's Donmar Warehouse.

The story, based on an 18th century French novel, is a tale of sex and power in pre-revolutionary Paris.

It's going to be the 30th anniversary revival of Christopher Hampton's award-winning stage adaptation which provided the basis for the 1988 film version, called Dangerous Liaisons, starring Michelle Pfeiffer, Glenn Close and John Malkovich.

When fans found out that British actor Richard Armitage would be playing the Francis Dolarhyde, the Red Dragon, in Season 3 of Hannibal they were super excited and now we are hearing how much Bryan Fuller, the showrunner, loved working with Richard.

The Armitage Army had no doubt that their idol could undertake this challenging role and it appears they were right. In a recent interview to promote Hannibal, Fuller sang Richard's praises.

When he was cast in the show -- which stars Mads Mikkelsen, as the lead character, Gillian Anderson as Hannibals's psychotherapist Bedelia Du Maurier, and Hugh Dancy who plays the serial killer hunter Will Graham -- Richard Armitage really didn't know who the feared Red Dragon was.

In an interview with Den of Geek, the showrunner discusses Armitage's role in depth.

"Oh! I can’t speak highly enough about the man as a professional and how he has brought this character to life in such a unique way. The tragedy of Francis Dolarhyde in the literature, I find to be so poignant and so romantic—you have this man who is capable of horrible things in that he’s a murderer of families, yet he is eloquent enough to take a blind woman on a date to the zoo where she can’t see the animals, but he has arranged for her to feel the animals—it’s one of the most romantic things I’ve ever read, ever!"

"To be able to allow the audience to meet that man first and see the tragedy of his situation and then be exposed to the horrors of what he is capable of, and then be able to return again to the story of a tortured man whose mind is eating him from the inside out, takes a very particular actor to navigate and garner sympathy from the audience."

Mad Max: Fury Road Review (Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron)

THE NEW YORKER
High Gear
“Mad Max: Fury Road.”

BY ANTHONY LANE

There is a moment, in “Mad Max: Fury Road,” when Max (Tom Hardy) washes blood off his face. This is unsurprising, since he has just engaged in one of many fights, but two points are worthy of note. First, the blood is not his. Second, he washes it off not with water but with mother’s milk, siphoned from a gas tanker. And there, in one image, you have George Miller’s film—wild and unrelenting, but also possessed of the outlandish poetry, laced with hints of humor, that rises to the surface when the world is all churned up.

The movie is set in the near future. There are no cities or civilizations left. The landscape is dying of thirst; water—known as Aqua Cola—is severely rationed; and other resources, notably gasoline, are hoarded and tussled over like scraps of food. Max is a survivor, like everyone else, and, as we join the stream of action, he is captured and hauled into servitude at the Citadel. Girded with towers of rock, this is the desert stronghold of Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne), a monstrous figure who lords it over a swarm of ragged wretches. His toadlike skin is caged in a transparent breastplate, and he breathes through a mask that’s armed with yellowing horses’ teeth and fed by bellows that wheeze up and down on the back of his neck. Probably a charming fellow, once you get to know him.

Max, being Max, tries to escape, only to be grabbed once more and strapped to the front of a vehicle, like a fender of flesh, with his sturdy features barred by a metal grille. Tom Hardy fans, who struggled so intently to understand him when he played Bane, in “The Dark Knight Rises,” may be less than thrilled to learn that their hero’s speech is yet again impeded. Just as you’re wondering if the poor guy will ever express himself freely, however, Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron), a new acquaintance of Max’s, asks, “You want that thing off your face?” The day is saved, though it’s not as if he starts chatting away like Cary Grant in “His Girl Friday.” You could tattoo the entirety of Max’s dialogue onto his biceps. One of his longest lines is “Hope is a mistake.”

Furiosa has a prosthetic arm, and her tendency to smear black grease across her brow may cause the fragrance honchos at Dior, where Theron is paid to spread the word about J’Adore, to reach for their atomizers. Furiosa is a driver, employed by Joe’s henchmen to transport precious fuel, who suddenly goes rogue, steering the War Rig, her vast and snarling truck, off course. A posse is dispatched to hunt her down. We soon discover her concealed cargo—the Wives, five young women who were imprisoned by Immortan Joe and doomed to bear his children. Our first glimpse of them bodes ill: limber beauties, draped in muslin underwear and hosing themselves down in the middle of nowhere. It’s like the start of a Playboy shoot. Yet the film not only recovers but winds up as a testament to female resilience, thanks to the Vuvalini—a small and leathery tribe of matriarchs, described by the film’s production designer as “lovely old bikie chicks.” Astride belching motorcycles, they hare up and down sand dunes, and accompany Max, Furiosa, and the Wives on the final leg of the plot.

I have been looking forward to this movie for months, trying not to watch the trailers more than twice a day, but, fool that I am, I hadn’t foreseen its feminist ambitions—crystallized in the sight of one Wife, heavily pregnant, flinging wide the door of the War Rig and flaunting her belly, like a bronze shield, at her enraged pursuers. (The Wives were coached in preparation for the film by Eve Ensler, the author of “The Vagina Monologues.” This must be a first. Gloria Steinem was never hired as a consultant on “The Dirty Dozen.”) Later comes a droll sequence with a sniper’s rifle, as our hero aims at a searchlight, in the distant gloom, but misses. Only one bullet remains. Furiosa takes the gun and hits the target, using Max’s shoulder as a rest. The tough guy is nothing but a cushion.

The good news is that “Mad Max: Fury Road” exists in a different league. It lies way, way beyond Thunderdome, and marks one of the few occasions on which a late sequel outdoes what came before. Is it a sequel, though? There are flashbacks to Max’s past, but they are over in seconds, and you can certainly relish the new film, in all its lunatic majesty, without being versed in Maxist dialectics. Indeed, it exults in a proud indifference to backstory. Furiosa mentions her origins, explaining that she was snatched away from “a green place,” but that’s it. As for Max, Hardy is more earthed than Gibson, and less wired—indeed, less mad, propelled not by the engine of wrath but by a solid response to the madness that engulfs the characters like a sandstorm. Max’s deeds rarely strike us as gratuitous. Instead, they seem resignedly brutal, as if there were no other way to live. Whether his deepest desire is for liberty, or simply for a dour solitude, I can’t decide, but I loved the coolness with which, having taken command in battle, he melts away, once it’s over, into the shifting throng.

Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday.

Michael Fassbender joined the stars at the Cannes Film Festival to premiere his latest, Macbeth, which he admits he didn’t even see prior to Saturday.

“I’m going to be seeing it with everyone else at the premiere … I can tell you that Marion [Cotillard] as Lady Macbeth is incredible. I know that from being across from her during the scenes. She’s mesmerizing,” Fass told Entertainment Weekly.

The critics absolutely agreed. The film got some stellar reviews, including this rave from the U.K.’s Telegraph: “After seeing Fassbender and Cotillard in these roles, the thought of ever seeing anyone else play them fades into irrelevance.”
