BRENDAN GLEESON, CILLIAN MURPHY: Three Irish actors to star in new Ron Howard movie (INDEPENDENT) LAURA BUTLER – 05 JULY 2013

HOLLYWOOD filmmaker Ron Howard has enlisted three Irish actors to star in his new blockbuster movie.

Silver screen veteran Brendan Gleeson will join Cillian Murphy and newcomer Sam Keeley in a story of a ship destroyed at sea, entitled 'In The Heart of The Sea'.

The production is based on the book by Nathaniel Philbrick, which follows the real-life tale of the survivors of the Nantucket whaling ship the Essex.

The boat was attacked by a sperm whale in 1820 and is what inspired author Herman Melville in writing his classic novel 'Moby Dick'.

Gleeson (58) will take on the role of a surviving crew member in his later years of life, who is interviewed about the near-death experience.

It is going to be a busy year for Gleeson, who is currently filming psychological thriller 'Eliza Graves' with Michael Caine and Kate Beckinsale.

The Dubliner is then due to begin shooting with the cast of 'In The Heart of The Sea' in September, with production of Howard's latest project expected to take place in London before moving to the Canary Islands.

Sir Kenneth Branagh's Macbeth impresses in Manchester (BBC NEWS)

Sir Kenneth Branagh in Macbeth

Sir Kenneth Branagh's first appearance as Macbeth has confirmed him to be an "intemperately exciting Shakespearean actor" in what is a "great" production of the play, critics have decided.

Macbeth is Sir Kenneth's first Shakespeare role on stage for 11 years.

It is being staged in a 281-capacity deconsecrated church in Manchester.

The Guardian critic Michael Billington said: "The highest compliment I can pay him is that at times he evoked golden memories of Olivier in the role."

The play begins with a full-blooded battle scene in driving rain, in which sparks fly as the warriors clash swords.

The stage - essentially a mud-filled trough - runs the length of the church, with the audience close to the action on banks of benches on either side.

Spectators were warned not to wear their "best, light coloured, dry-clean only" clothes in case they got splattered by the mud from the earthy and violent production, which is part of the Manchester International Festival.

Mr Billington wrote that "we seem to be in the thick of the rain-soaked, mud-spattered opening battles".

"This is an exciting production that shows why Branagh is such a fine Shakespearean actor," he told newspaper readers. "He can do the soaring vocal cries but he is also sensitive to the minutiae of language."

The actor also "conveys the desolation and despair of a man who has sold his soul only to be confronted by the hollowness of tyrannical power", he wrote.

In The Telegraph, critic Dominic Cavendish declared it a "thrilling, cinematically fluid account" of Macbeth that "doesn't hold back in plunging us into the harrowing grime of battle".

"As the earthy playing-area turns into a bog, as drums beat and swords clash, something stirs in the memory. Oh yes, Shakespeare can be really exciting, can't he?" he wrote.

Sir Kenneth "shows us the vestigial civilisation beneath the martial exterior", according to his five-star review.

"This is a Macbeth, though, that won't just go down as a highlight of the Manchester International Festival but as one of the Scottish Play's great revivals.

"It's a phoenix-like feather in the cap of Sir Ken, too, comeback Shakespearean king.

Helena Bonham Carter: 25 Things You Didn't Know About the British Actress Posted July 5th, 2013 1:00PMby Erin Whitney TAGS (MOVIEFONE)

Helena Bonham Carter

14. Johnny Depp is the godfather of her child, Billy Ray.

15. She is a distant cousin of Kate Middleton.

16. Helena McCrory, who played Narcissa Malfoy in "Harry Potter," was originally cast as Bellatrix Lestrange. However, after McCrory became pregnant, she was unable to shoot all of Lestrange's scenes, so Bonham-Carter got the part.

17. She wore fake teeth in "Planet of the Apes" (2001), "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (2005), and the the "Harry Potter" films.

18. While filming "Terminator Salvation" in New Mexico in 2008, her relatives were involved in a tragic bus accident in South Africa. Helena's cousin Fiona Bonham-Carter survived, but four of her family members died.

19. Why is Bonham-Carter so great as Mrs. Lovett in "Sweeney Todd"? Because she underwent extensive vocal lessons and studied baking in preparation for her role in the 2007 musical f Let's hope she practiced with the normal kind of meat pies...

20. Bonham-Carter was originally set to play a cyborg in "Terminator Salvation" (2009). However, after the script was leaked online her character was rewritten, a move that significantly cut down her screen time.

21. During the shooting of "Fight Club," Bonham-Carter insisted that her makeup artist (Julie Pearce) apply all of her eye makeup with her left hand, because the actress felt that Marla was not a person who would be particularly skilled at (or concerned with) correctly applying makeup.

22. She's a believer in "multiple drinking," which she described in an interview with the Guardian as drinking more than one drink at a time to sustain a balanced diet. While she admitted this wasn't a scientific fact, Bonham-Carter still enjoys having options when it comes to quenching her thirst.

23. She was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2012 Queen's New Years Honors List for her services to drama.

24. She was considered for the role of Sarah in "Labyrinth" (1986), but lost out to Jennifer Connelly.

25. She grew up dreaming of becoming one of the "Charlie's Angels."

Dear Jack Davenport: I love you - By thegoodshipdestiel at 6:00 pm, July 5, 2013 | Reviewed by Karen Rought (HYPABLE)

With the recent cancellation of NBC’s Smash, I can no longer look forward to seeing the marvelous British actor Jack Davenport on my television screen.

I have been actively following his career since the first time I stumbled upon BBC’s Coupling one fateful day many years ago and have always been pleased to see him pop up in various series and movies.

I consider him to be one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood and sincerely hope that no longer being committed to a series gives him ample time to attack new projects. I will certainly be on the lookout for his next starring role, but in the meantime I would like to share with those who may be unaware some of the many reasons that Jack Davenport is awesome.

#2 – He was so likeable that he wrote himself into a huge movie franchise
From the sassy Commodore in The Curse of the Black Pearl to the self-sacrificing Admiral in At World’s End, this bad guy turned good guy turned drunk guy turned good guy is hard not to love. While Norrington was only intended to be in the first film, the character was so liked by audiences and critics that he was kept around far longer. Props must go to Jack Davenport, who made us love him even when he was trying to hang our beloved anti-hero.

#1 – He made some of the best observational relationship rants you never would
If you have not seen this show, you have no idea what you are missing. I have seen every episode numerous times and it never stops being hysterical. Before Steven Moffat helmed Doctor Who, he penned this beloved British sitcom in the early 2000s. Jack Davenport plays Steve, one of six friends who get themselves into some of the stickiest situations you could imagine. The dialogue, the acting, and the plots of this brilliant series will have you laughing until your sides hurt.

Henry Cavill And Kaley Cuoco Step Out Together, Fail To Convince Me They’re Dating (CRUSHABLE) 7 hours ago by Jill O’Rourke

Henry Cavill Kaley Cuoco dating July 2013

So we’ve already established that Henry Cavill’s relationship with Kaley Cuoco is pretty meh, but could it also not really be a relationship at all? These latest photos of the couple stepping out in public together holding hands and flashing smiles have me suspicious. There are just too many things that don’t add up, starting with the fact that out of all of the pictures I’ve seen from their outing together, there is not one in which they appear to be avoiding the paparazzi’s cameras or seeking privacy of any kind. And that’s weird to see coming from two relatively private people. I mean, Kaley had a two-year-long secret relationship with her Big Bang Theory co-star Johnny Galecki. And suddenly she’s out and about flaunting her very new relationship with no attempt at privacy?

There’s also the issue of timing. When I first heard these two were dating, I immediately thought, “Wait, doesn’t Henry have a girlfriend?” Although Us Weekly reported that he and Gina Carano had broken up, I couldn’t find any reports about such a break-up that weren’t also discussing his new relationship with Kaley. When did this break-up happen and was there really enough time for Henry and Kaley to go from no relationship at all to holding hands and buying groceries? Seriously. They bought groceries together.

Also what was the status of their relationship when Kaley tweeted that photo of herself staring in awe at the Man of Steel poster? That looked like the kind of picture I would tweet after spending two hours ogling Henry’s chiseled features which I have never met in person, not while I was actually dating those chiseled features. So had she actually met him at that point, which was less than a month ago, I might add?

For all we know these two are a legit couple, but I’m not the only one who smells something fishy. Although most mainstream entertainment news sites are simply reporting that they’re a cute new couple, other places like Celebitchy and Buzzfeed are skeptical, and in the comments sections of articles on the subject, I’m seeing a lot of confusion, heartbreak and cries of “fake fake fake.”

Mourn Game Of Thrones Deaths With Gotye Parody 'Some Characters I Used To Know' Author: Katey Rich (SPOILERS) (CINEMA BLEND)

"Why isn't George R.R. Martin on Twitter?"

"Because he killed all 140 characters."

That's probably the silliest but best joke I've heard about Game of Thrones, the show that has trumped seemingly every other form of entertainment in breaking the hearts of viewers foolish enough to invest in its characters. And sure, the end of Season 3 had some of the most brutal surprises imaginable, but some of us are still getting over the tragedies of Season One…and this video is for us.

Comic duo Ginny DiGiuseppi and Dana Ritterbusch, known together as Not Literally, have assembled some impressive CGI backgrounds and wigs to transform Gotye's "Somebody I Used To Know" into a tribute to the dearly departed characters from Game of Thrones season one. SPOILERS AHEAD, I suppose, though if you a) haven't caught the news about these characters dying and b) actually care enough to be spoiled, I'm not really sure why you clicked on this to begin with.

Simon Pegg: Rosamund Pike's fillets stuck to me added: 5 Jul 2013 // by: Film-News.co.uk Newsdesk

Rosamund Pike

Simon Pegg bonded with Rosamund Pike after one of her "chicken fillets" kept "sticking to him" during a love scene.

The actors star together in Hector and the Search for Happiness and had to record while almost naked.

The problems they experienced left Simon happy to open up to her about anything.

Simon with Rosamund Pike

"We had to do quite a graphic love scene,” he told the latest edition of British Glamour magazine. “You wear these modesty things that cover your bits and for women you'll wear ones on the ends of your boobs so you don't look naked.

They were like chicken fillets and one kept sticking to me.”

The motion picture, which also stars Toni Collette, tells the tale of a psychiatrist who searches the globe to find the secret of contentment.

It is released in cinemas next year.

“Once you've done that with someone, you can really talk about anything," Simon giggled.

Michelle Dockery: I want Downton forever (BELFAST TELEGRAPH)

Michelle Dockery has explained her "love affair" with Downton Abbey.

The 31-year-old plays Lady Mary Crawley in the award-winning British TV show. While some stars are eager to try their hand at different roles, for now Michelle wants the period drama to last as long as possible.

"There’s a part of me that doesn’t want it to end, because I love it so much... and once it’s all over, I’m sure there will be a period when I feel slightly at a loss," she said in an interview with the August edition of Harper's Bazaar. "It’s like this love affair that I have with my job."

Despite playing an aristocratic character with a stiff upper lip in the show, Michelle insists she is far more laidback in real life. Striving to succeed in the acting business has taught her to stay grounded and humble.

Toby Stephens - Toby Stephens Wins Rave Reviews For Tackling His Father's West End Role 04 July 2013 (CONTACT MUSIC)

British actor Toby Stephens has won praise from theatre critics for his role in a West End revival of a play which once starred his famous parents Dame Maggie Smith and Sir Robert Stephens.

Stephens' mother and father won rave reviews for their portrayal of sparring ex-lovers in a 1972 London production of Noel Coward's Private Lives, and now their son has followed in their footsteps by scoring his own glowing write-ups.

The Die Another Day star plays the role his father tackled more than 40 years ago in the new production with Anna Chancellor, which opened at London's Gielgud Theatre on Wednesday night (03Jul13), and Henry Hitchings of the London Evening Standard branded the show a "deliciously fresh revival".

Hitchings calls Stephens a "superb comic actor" and compares him to Chancellor's Four Weddings and a Funeral co-star Hugh Grant, adding, "I can't recall having seen him give a better performance than he does here."

Charles Spencer of Britain's Daily Telegraph gave the play five stars out of five, writing, "This is a gloriously entertaining evening, opulently designed... and offering two hours of comic bliss", while The Independent's Paul Taylor concludes by calling the new production of Private Lives "the best in a decade".

Kenneth Branagh: lost Shakespearean? Kenneth Branagh seemed to give up on Shakespeare. But now he's come back to the playwright who made his name, says Dominic Cavendish. (TELEGRAPH)

By Dominic Cavendish, Theatre Critic 7:10AM BST  04 Jul 2013

Kenneth Branagh in the film Henry V

The other day I found myself spending a fruitless hour pacing the backstreets of Manchester in the hope of stumbling across the as-yet-undisclosed deconsecrated church where Kenneth Branagh (Sir Kenneth since last November) will present his Macbeth as part of the city’s biennial International Festival, which is almost upon us.

The reason wasn't so much journalistic as nostalgic. I hadn't managed to bag a ticket in advance – all availability went in nine minutes – and the fancy possessed me that perhaps if I laid eyes on the building I’d get closer to the spirit of the project.

Closer, if I’m honest, to Ken. Almost unwittingly I found myself succumbing to something I hadn’t experienced for 25 years: what was once known as Branagh-mania. The reflex action whirled me back to my teenage self, queuing outside the Phoenix Theatre, fresh out of school – an age when to be young was pretty groovy but to see the talk of the town giving his Hamlet was very heaven.

In 1988, when you thought of Branagh, you thought of the Bard – and marveled at how sexy, exciting and fresh-minted he had made the “sweet swan of Avon” seem. The Belfast-born boy-wonder, who blazed a self-radicalized trail out of Reading, where his family moved after the start of the Troubles, made those of us half in love with theatre fully smitten, and rather doting on him, too.

Aged 23 and barely out of the swaddling clothes of drama school, he had seized the crowning role of Henry V at the RSC, bestriding its stages like the proverbial colossus – even daring to consult Prince Charles about the role – only to decide afterwards that it would be better if he could run his own company, and lead from the front.

Such certainty, such vigour, such chutzpah! He was the model of the new can-do age while harking back to the mythical world of Olivier (with whom he was ceaselessly compared) and all the great knights fighting the good fight for immortal nights out with every syllable of perfectly enunciated, rapier-sharp Shakespearean utterance.

He hung out with the right crowd – Judi Dench, Derek Jacobi, Richard Briers, Geraldine McEwen. In fact he did more than just hang out with them, he incorporated them into his gang, the Renaissance Theatre Company. The company started its 1988 campaign in Birmingham before sweeping into the West End. Critics and audiences alike adored the company’s Much Ado – in which he twinkled mischievously as Benedick opposite Samantha Bond’s foxy Beatrice.

They delighted at As You Like It, in which he dazzled as the fool Touchstone – the Guardian’s Michael Billington declaring “Mr Branagh actually makes you wait impatiently for every appearance of Shakespeare’s unfunniest clown”. And they kissed the hem of his Hamlet, in which his dazzling Great Dane, as the Financial Times’ reviewer wryly noted, “went to his death with a sardonic dash worthy of Douglas Fairbanks, blond hair kept at bay by the sword-free hand”.

Colin Firth: MY FAIR LADY Broadway Revival Set for 2014; Ralph Fiennes as a 'Contender' for Henry Higgins? by broadwayworld.com

We reported earlier this year that the Nederlanders and Clive Davis were hard at work planning a 2014 Broadway revival of MY FAIR LADY, to be directed by Bartlett Sher. Sher's recent credits include South Pacific, Golden Boy, and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.

At the time, Clive Davis recently announced that he was eyeing LES MISERABLES star Anne Hathaway and Colin Firth to play Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins, respectively. Firth has also starred in a big screen musical in the past, taking on Harry in 2008's MAMMA MIA. Neither actor, however, has yet starred in a Broadway production. Today, Michael Riedel reveals in the New York Post that both actors were unable to commit for more than 6 months, so the casting process has moved on elsewhere.

Breaking-News-Bartlett-Sher-to-Direct-MY-FAIR-LADY-Revival-20010101

He writes "Ralph Fiennes has emerged as a contender for Henry Higgins. As far as I can tell, he's never done a musical before, but he's a fine actor, and as Rex Harrison famously proved, a good actor can talk-sing his way through 'I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face.'" He additionally notes that producing alongside the Nederlanders and Clive Davis will be producer Roger Berlind.

My Fair Lady is a musical based upon George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion and with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe. The story concerns Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl who takes speech lessons from professor Henry Higgins, a phoneticist, so that she may pass as a well-born lady. The musical's 1956 Broadway production was a hit, setting what was then the record for the longest run of any major musical theatre production in history. It was followed by a hit London production, a popular film version, and numerous revivals. It has been called "the perfect musical".

GERARD BUTLER: Hollywood A-Lister sets hearts racing in Edinburgh (DEADLINE)

Hollywood A-lister Gerard Butler sets hearts racing

Drinkers in the bar told how Butler was sitting by himself having a quiet drink while checking messages on his phone.

Scott Wright, a politics student at Edinburgh University, said he and friends debated whether it even was Butler sitting side on a few feet away.

Scott, 21, said: “We called the barman over and asked him and he was like ‘yeah it’s him’. So I went over and asked if it would be okay for a picture.

“He said aye it would be okay but a little later like ten minutes or so. He wasn’t dismissive or anything he was just busy doing something on his phone.

“There was like loads of writing on the screen, like an email or something. He kept reading it and was shaking his head, I don’t know what that was about.”

He added: “He had quite a heavy beard growth and was wearing a leather jacket, jeans and some Adidas trainers. He was probably trying to blend in, he’s pretty A-list.”

About ten minutes later Scott approached the bar to get a drink and made eye contact with Butler.

He offered the star one, but he politely declined.

The star then happily posed for pictures with Scott and his pals.

And when a friend’s girlfriend asked for a picture, Butler joked that he only posed for pictures with men.

Dan Stevens: The word "coffee" is music to my ears In his monthly column, Dan Stevens berates Britain's lack of stamina. (TELEGRAPH)

By Dan Stevens12:15PM BST 02 Jul 2013

There are a lot of things that excite me about an orchestra but one that always gets me is the collective sense of time, held together by that crazed individual, the conductor; the manic bundle of musical quartz at the heart of the mechanism. I went along to the Festival Hall on the South Bank in London recently to see Benjamin Wallfisch (the composer of the wonderful score for Summer in February) as he was conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra playing a series of four pieces he had composed based on Roald Dahl’s Dirty Beasts; poems among my favourites (now being read to another generation of Stevens). Ben harnessed the orchestra’s facility for storytelling and showed it off to a spellbound audience of schoolchildren. When he toyed with the time signature to great oohs and ahhs (most of them mine) I realised how connected emotional narrative is with pace. Children seem immediately more attuned, but if we give ourselves up to the signature of a piece it can be wildly transportive, taking us to the saddest, happiest and most frenzied places.

The oldest complaint about London is “closing time”. Everywhere else in the world seems to have more stamina than Britain. The rage that can be seen in the serious London drinker’s eye at last orders can be quite terrifying. But who in God’s name turns their coffee machines off at 5pm? “Sorry, sir, there’s not much demand for it over here after 5, so we turn it off,” I was told recently. Well that’s precisely why you’re closing early. I’m demanding coffee, now, because I need it. Yes, I know it’s 6pm, which is normally when you might be halfway through a chilled sauvignon blanc, but I am a coffee drinker and I want coffee. Tonight.
