Matthew Macfadyen: What is it about Jeeves and Wooster?

Matthew Macfayden (left), and Stephen Mangan (right) with director Sean Foley (centre) on the rehearsal set of their new Jeeves and Wooster play Perfect Nonsense

THE TELEGRAPH
By Jasper Rees1:00PM BST
08 Oct 2013

The consistency of a divine soufflé. The delicacy of finest bone china. Choose your own image to embody the unimprovable prose of PG Wodehouse.

Those who tamper with it do so at their own peril. The BBC’s recent attempt to capture the bucolic anarchy of the Blandings books had all the sophistication of a whoopee cushion. So we must treat a new stage version of the even more untouchable Jeeves and Wooster with trepidation.

Perfect Nonsense is bearing down on the West End with a cast that may at least smooth the furrowed brows of worried Wodehousians. Stephen Mangan, who plays Bertie, is a victor ludorum in comic buffoonery — as seen in Green Wing and Episodes and above all in the Tony-winning The Norman Conquests.

Matthew Macfadyen will bring to his Jeeves the same still poker face he deployed to such effect in Spooks, but having starred in Private Lives (opposite Kim Cattrall), he also knows about stage mayhem. So that’s all tickety-boo.

But there is a twist. In what is being billed as An Evening with Jeeves and Wooster, there is just one other actor in the cast. So in this adaptation of The Code of the Woosters — the one with the cow creamer — who is going to play Roderick Spode, Sir Watkyn Bassett, Gussie Fink-Nottle, Stiffy Byng and, with no actress on the payroll, the redoubtable Aunt Dahlia? The answer is that the ever resourceful Jeeves will, with the help of his valeting colleague Seppings. He will also supply set, costumes and lighting.

Yes, like previous West End comedy blockbusters The 39 Steps and The Play What I Wrote, Perfect Nonsense is a short-staffed play within a play. That explains the presence of the comedy director Sean Foley, one half of the comic troupe The Right Size whose stage hit The Ladykillers is doing a second stint in the West End. As they wrestled with the script supplied by Robert and David Goodale, the stars and their director explain how it’ll all be all right on the night.

Jasper Rees Wouldn’t it have been so much simpler to do a straight adaptation?

Stephen Mangan It would have probably felt a little bit, why do it? I can’t imagine it being as fun to do. Part of the problem is you’re taking all those perfectly constructed sentences and shouting them in a theatre. Will they survive? This preserves a lot of Bertie’s wit. I’m just banking on the fact that the sort of person who enjoys Wodehouse is the sort of person who won’t come along looking for problems.

Sean Foley A dutiful old-style rep version would be deathly boring. It’s a brilliant conceit. Bertie has been told he’s a wonderful actor and why doesn’t he just tell one of his wonderful stories in a theatre one night? He thinks, what a terrific idea, and within 30 seconds it’s a disaster. Jeeves comes on and save the day, and how.

Matthew Macfadyen It’s interesting to think how many people will think it’s a conventional proscenium arch retelling of a PG Wodehouse book. The fourth wall is in and out the whole time. The audience really is the fourth character in the play.

JR Which must make it particularly hard to rehearse?

SM When you read the script first you laugh a lot. And then as you work on it over the weeks it becomes less and less funny because you’ve heard all the jokes. The show is like a thousand-piece jigsaw and at the moment I feel like I’ve lost the pieces. Noises Off was the same. You go, “This is never going to work.”

SF It’s like four-dimensional chess. Or even seven, let’s be honest. It’s why I love first previews because it’s when you meet the audience. I sit there in the last dress rehearsals going, it’s a disaster. And then the healing wave of laughter comes and you’re away.

SM They are exciting evenings but I do always think, what lunatic comes to a first preview? Why would you want to see a show that isn’t ready yet? But we need somebody there.

MM Buffering, that’s our new word. In the course of a mini run we’ve just stopped where the downloading has stopped and we just don’t know what’s coming next. It’s not even a question of trying to remember. But we are lucky in the sense that Jeeves and Wooster are putting it on and they’re hoping for the best.

David Tennant on Doctor Who return: I didn’t want to step on Matt Smith’s toes

Tennant and Smith co-star in the anniversary special (Picture: BBC)

Former Doctor Who David Tennant has opened up about returning for the 50th anniversary episode of the show, saying it was difficult not to step on current Timelord Matt Smith’s toes.

Tennant has filmed scenes for the upcoming episode The Day Of The Doctor, which co-stars Smith and other old faces – and he says it was tricky not to be ‘presumptuous’.

‘You want to do it as well as you did before and that’s difficult because you’re trying to think five years back and make sure it feels the same but you’re also not wanting to step on anyone’s toes or be rather presumptuous,’ the actor told audiences gathered at a BFI screening of Doctor Who.

Downton Abbey’ season 4, episode 4 preview: Michelle Dockery, Tom Cullen in London VIDEO (SPOILERS AHEAD)

CARTER
October 12, 2013

The latest -

Is Lady Mary moving on from Matthew Crawley and into the arms of a new man? If you are worried about some big romantic scene happening on Sunday night’s “Downton Abbey” season 4 episode, don’t be. (Spoilers ahead!) Based on the attached photo provided here via ITV, what you’re a little more likely to see is merely a case of her and Lord Anthony Gilligham spending some time together in London. She hardly has the facial expression of someone ready to fall in love again; there’s no eye content here, and her gray ensemble is just one step away from black. (Also, you must remember what Gillingham himself said about his romantic intentions at the party.)

What this photo proves is simply this: Michelle Dockery and Tom Cullen’s characters are going to be spending some more time together, and this time around, they are going to be in London instead of Downton. There will be the possibility of a relationship later on in the season, but we’re still a little early for something of this variety to pop up.

If you were being chased by a terrifying tyrannosaurus, a small red bicycle wouldn't be many peoples first choice of transport.

However, that is exactly what Sean Bean was riding as he filmed scenes for his latest blockbuster in the Kent countryside.

The actor looked remarkably cool despite his sticky situation, and instead appeared to be enjoying spending time on the vintage chopper.

The 54-year-old was wearing a loose-fitting shirt, brown trousers and brown, leather boots for the scene.

The Lord of the Rings star is having a successful year after leading Britain in the nominations for the 2013 International Emmy Awards.

He has received two nominations for his role as a cross-dresser in TV show Accused, which also saw its creator Jimmy McGovern shortlisted for best drama series.

Benedict Cumberbatch Stunned By Harrison Ford Praise

CONTACT MUSIC
October 12, 2013

Benedict Cumberbatch

Actor Benedict Cumberbatch had "a moment" while taping a recent episode of a British chat show when his hero Harrison Ford told him he was a big fan.

The two actors were sitting side by side on The Graham Norton Show when Ford turned to the Star Trek: Into Darkness star and handed him a huge chunk of praise.

The Star Wars icon said, "I didn't get a chance to say what a big fan I am of yours... The Sherlock Holmes thing is amazing."

A visibly stunned Cumberbatch responded, "Thank you very much. Wow, that's a bit of a moment. Thank you very much."

The Sherlock star then stood up and quipped, "I can retire now, I'm going."

The 10 best parts of the Benedict Cumberbatch Reddit AMA

HIT FIX
By Liana Maeby
Friday, Oct 11, 2013 4:40 PM

Everyone's favorite Cumberbatch, the one and only Benedict Cumberbatch, agreed to do a Reddit AMA today in anticipation of his new flick, "The Fifth Estate." And the fanboys and fangirls went nuts! Because I know how precious your time is, I weeded through and picked out Benedict's 10 best answers. But beware: the tidbit listed as #1 might actually cause the Internet to shut down entirely -- only to reemerge as a hub solely for Benedict Cumberbatch fan fiction.

10. where has your favorite place been so far to visit?

On an untouched New Zealand glacier via helicopter where I stepped out in trainers, jogging pants, and got out and danced. Or touching the earth after my first skydiving jump in Namibia. Or a balcony in South Africa where I felt the sun on my face after the night I was carjacked

9. Is it hard to keep the secret of how Sherlock survived? Do you ever have the urge to tell someone? If so, how do you cope?

I cry myself to sleep at night. And then wake up laughing.

8. Has there been a time when you've been completely starstruck meeting someone famous but had to play it cool because you're famous too?

Uhhhhhhhh. Every time I've met someone famous who I've been in the audience of. I have the same butterflies and inability to be cool. I approach them as a fellow member of the human race as the next person in their audience does. I've been doing this for 10 odd years, and so to meet people who thrilled me with their work for my entire life in such a concentrated manner as has happened over the last few years has been mind-blowing. One of the many perks of my job, I guess.

7. Benedict, do you bother with Halloween? If so, what will you be this year?

The invisible man. Oh, how I love to disappear.

6. QUICK. whats in your pocket right now?

My hand.
How are you typing?
With my left foot.

5. Seeing as to how you've been spending a lot of time in the US, what do you find was the most baffling thing about the customs here?

I find that no one at the borders ever smiles.

4. If you make an appearance on Sesame Street, which Muppet would you like to share a scene with?

Animal

For Michael Fassbender, meeting and working with Brad Pitt on 2009's Inglourious Basterds was a life-changing experience.

"Brad is a wonderful human being who has a generous soul," Fassbender, 36, told PEOPLE at Wednesday's Cinema Society and Emporio Armani screening of his new film The Counselor in New York. "I have a lot of reasons to thank him. He has always been a real champion for me."

In addition to The Counselor, the Irish-German actor reteams with his Basterds costar in the Oscar-buzzy movie 12 Years a Slave, opening Oct. 18.

"After we first worked together, he was talking to a lot of people in Hollywood about me, and I really thank him for doing that," says the brooding X-Men and Shame star.

"Brad not only supported me, but he also encouraged and helped other young talent. He is one of those guys that we need in the industry."

Fassbender adds, "12 Years a Slave wouldn't have happened without Brad and his company, Plan B. I'm very grateful that he became a part of it."

Alan Rickman on Punk, 'Potter,' and the Likelihood of a 'Galaxy Quest' Sequel

ONTD
October 9, 2013

In "CBGB," Alan Rickman plays Hilly Kristal, the man who founded the legendary New York City punk bar whose stage helped launch The Ramones, Blondie, and the Talking Heads. The film happens to co-star Rupert Grint (as a member of one of the lesser-known punk bands, The Dead Boys), proof that the "Harry Potter" universe is indeed all-encompassing.

We talked to Rickman about his own relationship to punk (distant), how close he stays to his former Hogswarts charges (fairly close), and just what kind of device he'd need for a "Galaxy Quest" sequel.

What made you want to take on this part?
I thought he was completely fascinating in the sense that he started a club that was supposed to honor country music ["CBGB" stands for "Country, Bluegrass and Blues"], and he never got to play any country music there. Along came punk and he was smart enough and open enough and generous enough to listen to what their point of view was. In fact, he became a kind of father figure to all these wild young things.

How did you get into character?
Lots of videos you can watch of Hilly and some private ones I was given. I was able to just watch him for hours, really, walking, talking, being. [The real Hilly died in 2007.]

Had you ever been to CBGB's?
I haven't, except in its new incarnation as John Varvatos.

Were you a fan of punk music?
Not really, because I was an art student and a drama student in London in the '70s. When you say "punk music," I never thought it included people like David Byrne, but now I know that it does. And also The Police. So I'd have been a bit more down that road than The Dead Boys or Television.

Henry Cavill has cozy dinner date with ex-girlfriend in Rome (PICTURES)

Funnyman: Henry repeatedly made Gina laugh during their Italian dinner date

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER
PUBLISHED: 08:41 EST, 9 October 2013 | UPDATED: 15:15 EST, 9 October 2013

It's a prospect that will upset many women, and probably a few men, but is Hollywood actor Henry Cavill getting back together with his ex-girlfriend?

The handsome Man of Steel star was seen dining with Gina Carano in Rome, Italy, earlier this week.

The 30 year-old performer, who is currently filming The Man From U.N.C.L.E. with director Guy Ritchie in the ancient city, took a break from his hectic schedule to spend an evening with the brunette.

Seated outside a romantic restaurant, where they shared a bottle of red wine, the pair looked relaxed and happy as they toasted each others' company.

In fact, they looked every inch the couple as they exchanged warm, familiar banter, which frequently resulted in laughter.

Hours later they were seen leaving the venue together.

Colin Firth stunned by Mark Darcy's death in Bridget Jones

Colin Firth stunned by Mark Darcy's death in Bridget Jones

BLOCKBUSTER
October 9, 2013

Colin Firth was stunned when he was told Mark Darcy was being killed off in 'Bridget Jones 3'.

The Oscar-winning actor played the gentlemanly love interest of bumbling heroine Bridget (Renee Zellweger) in the first two film adaptations of Helen Fielding's bestselling novels and was fully expecting to reprise the popular role in the next film.

However, Fielding was forced to break the news to Firth over the phone that his alter-ego doesn't feature in her long-awaited third book, 'Mad About The Boy', and instead leaves Bridget a widower.

She told TIME magazine: ''I did want to tell Colin in person but we were trying to have lunch, and I couldn't really tell him why I was trying to meet him, and he was in a different place. So I ended up telling him he died on the phone.

''I had to ask him if he had someone with him and if he was sitting down. It was like someone actually had died. We had to process it. And I was almost saying, 'I'm so sorry for your loss'.''

The next romantic comedy will see Bridget, now 51, struggling to raises their children Mabel and Billy alone, but Fielding appeared to hint at the possibility of a cameo role for Firth in the form of a ghost.

The author added: ''His presence is very much there in the book and in the child. As I told him, his memory will live on and he will rise from the dead rather like Jesus.''

Benedict Cumberbatch: JULIAN ASSANGE, OFFICIALLY THE BIGGEST A-HOLE IN THE WORLD

ESQUIRE
By Paul Schrodt

In case you needed any more proof the open letter has officially jumped the shark, Julian Assange has come aboard. Assange wrote a letter to Benedict Cumberbatch, the actor who plays him in the upcoming film The Fifth Estate, after Cumberbatch made an attempt to contact Assange. Now that letter is posted on WikiLeaks. (And, by the way, just because you WikiLeak your open letter doesn't make it any less open.) Assange's letter smacks of his usual smugness, but it also seeks to do the two things all inappropriate open letters do:

The letter 1) establishes a false sense of intimacy between Assange and Cumberbatch. "The bond that develops between an actor and a living subject is significant."

And 2) It suggests Assange has anything of historical importance to tell Cumberbatch and the world. He does not.

Benedict Cumberbatch: WikiLeaks Publishes Assange's Private Letter to Benedict Cumberbatch

Cuberbatch-assange

MASHABLE
October 9, 2013
By Fran Berkman

WikiLeaks' most recent release may not reveal any government secrets, but it does set a new standard for the age-old term, "no hard feelings."

The controversial website published a letter Wednesday written by founder Julian Assange to actor Benedict Cumberbatch, who portrays Assange in the upcoming film, The Fifth Estate. The letter is dated Jan. 15, 2013, about a week before the film's production began, and it appears to be a response to Cumberbatch's request for an in-person meeting. While Assange is cordial to Cumberbatch, he ultimately denies the actor's request.

"I hope that you will take such directness as a mark of respect, and not as an unkindness,"

Assange wrote. "I believe you are a good person, but I do not believe that this film is a good film." "I believe you are a good person, but I do not believe that this film is a good film."

The letter suggests Cumberbatch wanted to meet, so he could familiarize himself with Assange's mannerisms, to better portray him in the film. Assange wrote that he did not want to meet because he thought it would "validate" the film, which is "based on a deceitful book by someone who has a vendetta against me and my organisation."

In his letter, Assange even suggested that Cumberbatch give up his role in The Fifth estate.

"You will be used, as a hired gun, to assume the appearance of the truth in order to assassinate it. To present me as someone morally compromised and to place me in a falsified history. To create a work, not of fiction, but of debased truth.

"Not because you want to, of course you don't, but because, in the end, you are a jobbing actor who gets paid to follow the script, no matter how debauched.

"Your skills play into the hands of people who are out to remove me and WikiLeaks from the world.

"I believe that you should reconsider your involvement in this enterprise."

Such speculation naturally began surfacing after the Man of Steel actor and the former MMA fighter turned action star were spotted on a dinner date in Rome this week.

The two could be seen sharing a bottle of wine, laughing and clearly enjoying their evening together.

Cavill and Carano reportedly began dating in Sept. 2012, but split up earlier this year.

Why Michael Fassbender’s Sex Scene With Penelope Cruz Was Awkward

CELEBRITY NEWSIE
October 8, 2013

Michael Fassbender and Penelope Cruz participate in a sex scene in Ridley Scott’s new film, “The Counselor,” and in a new interview with E! Online, Fassbender confirms that the pretend intercourse was as uncomfortable as one might imagine.

“It’s always a bit awkward, really. Doing scenes like that, especially cause Javier [Bardem] was sitting at the end of the bed. That was really weird,” Fassbender joked to the network. (Bardem and Cruz are married.) “You just wanna make sure that the other person is comfortable and that the other person doesn’t feel like you’re taking advantage of any situation. And then to just try and feel safe with one another really and then you can really hopefully sell what needs to be sold.”

In the new film, which is based on an original script by Cormac McCarthy, Fassbender plays a lawyer who gets caught up in the drug trade (Cruz, Bardem, Brad Pitt and Cameron Diaz round out the all-star cast). “The Counselor” is out in theaters on Oct. 25, giving Fassbender two high-profile releases in the month of October (the other being “12 Years A Slave”).

Rupert Penry-Jones: Blood, sweat and fears

Rupert Penry-Jones as DI Joseph Chandler Whitechapel.

THE AGE
Guy Davis
October , 2013

Since its premiere season, which saw a modern-day madman recreating the gruesome murders of Jack the Ripper in 21st century London, the UK crime drama Whitechapel has made the district of the title the epicentre for some truly nasty crimes.

It begs the question: is Whitechapel actually a nice place to live? Does anyone even really want to go there?
“It is nice, actually,” Whitechapel star Rupert Penry-Jones chuckled.

“It’s become a very trendy part of London. It wasn’t always but now it’s where the young, cool people tend to go. I love it there – it’s got real atmosphere.”

Well, if the fourth season of Whitechapel is any indication, the area not only attracts the young and the cool but the crazy and the bloodthirsty.

The six episodes making up the season are split into three two-episode investigations undertaken by Penry-Jones’ DI Joseph Chandler, Phil Davis’ DS Ray Miles and their team, including unofficial consultant Edward Buchan (Steve Pemberton), a true-crime enthusiast.

And the cases they’re trying to crack? A witch hunt where the victims are crushed under boulders and burned alive at the stake, for one.

Then there’s mysterious deaths in the sewers that may be the result of feral pigs.

“And there’s one where someone is skinning people,” Penry-Jones said dryly. “This is possibly the most grisly season yet.”

But the actor, whose other notable small-screen roles include Spooks and Silk, rather likes it that way.

“To be honest, the scarier and more gruesome the better, as far I am concerned,” he said.
