Kenneth Branagh channels Olivier (BUSINESS WORLD WEEKENDER)

BY ANGELA DAWSON,
Front Row FeaturesHOLLYWOOD --

Early in his career, Kenneth Branagh sent a letter to his idol Sir Laurence Olivier asking him for advice on a role he was about to play.

“That, in itself, was exciting: the ritual of writing to a god,” recalls the renowned actor and filmmaker some 30 years later. “That’s what it felt like ” writing to a god with an address in central London.”

More nerve-wracking than actually sending his query to the famous performer was actually receiving a response from him. “I remember my hand shaking when I got the envelope,” Branagh says, recounting the tale like an old storyteller. “On the back it said, ‘Laurence Olivier’ in embossed, raised lettering.”

The young thespian struggled for several minutes on how best to open the envelope without doing too much damage to it. He looked around for a letter opener but couldn’t find one. So he finally just tore open the flap and pulled out the typewritten letter on fancy blue letterhead.

It read: I’m afraid I cannot give you any advice in particular ways in which you should approach this role. It’s up to an actor himself to come up with these individual things. But my advice to you anyway is to have a bash and hope for the best, which I certainly wish for you.

Branagh never met the renowned movie and stage actor, who died in 1989, but he kept the letter, which remains one of his prized possessions. Holding Olivier in such high regard, Branagh paused when he was offered the opportunity to portray him in My Week With Marilyn, a possibly true account of a young stagehand’s relationship with Marilyn Monroe during the production of The Prince and the Showgirl, which was directed and co-starred Olivier.

Tom Hiddleston: 'Avengers' trailer racking up the hits (THE FLORIDA TIMES UNION)

Submitted by Matt Soergel

The trailer for Marvel's "The Avengers" is a crowded affair with familiar faces: Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), along with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and the villainous Loki (Tom Hiddleston).

We're just two months (May 4) from seeing what all the individual superhero movies have been building up to.The trailer, which has been exploding on the internet (Marvel says it set an iTunes record with 13.7 million views in the first 24 hours), looks pretty promising: Admit it, it's kind of a kick to see them all together. And the destruction rained down from the skies looks state-of-the-art.

Michael Fassbender Left 'Bemused' As Fan 'Vomits With Excitement' After Seeing Him (E.)

It looks as though the excitement of seeing Michael Fassbender in all his humanly glory got a bit too much for one fan after she vomited after seeing him.

The actor, who is currently living in London, was reportedly left feeling "bemused" when a fan let it all come out right by his feet when she spotted him in a pub.An eyewitness who saw the incident in all it's technicolor glory told The Sun: "Since Michael has been talking about how he lives in Hackney loads of girls have been hanging around the area in the hope of catching a glimpse of him.

"He was a bit bemused by his latest encounter but brushed off the vomit and played it cool." The eyewitness added: "He used to be a barman so he's no stranger to mopping up some sick."

Benedict Cumberbatch: Mysterious Sherlock posters cause a stir Stateside (MUSIC ROOMS)

It seems that the American’s modern take on Sherlock Holmes could be about to play second fiddle to British series Sherlock as the Steven Moffat series is making waves across the pond.

The hype of the series became apparent when a series of mysterious posters appeared on a campus with slogans such as “Moriarty was real” and “Richard Brook is a lie”.

Another poster featuring Benedict Cumberbatch’s face state, “I believe in Sherlock Holmes.” A group calling themselves Watson’s Warriors revealed they were behind the campaign, saying they had a simple message to deliver. Watch the show.

Colin Firth 'calmed his children' when a mid-air fight broke out on his flight to London (NZ CITY)

The 51-year-old British actor was on his way back from the Oscars in Los Angeles - where he presented the gong for Best Actress to Meryl Streep - when two people are said to have started attacking each other over an alleged theft.

Cabin crew on the British Airways flight called ahead for back up and armed police stormed the plane as soon as it landed at Heathrow airport.

But an eyewitness said the 'King's Speech' actor ignored the chaos and focused on reassuring his sons Luca, 10, and Matteo, eight, as well as wife Livia, 42.

A source told The Sun newspaper: "Passengers were in meltdown when it spiralled out of control. It was scary for flyers who feared for the safety of the flight.

"Colin Firth showed his usual cool and was more concerned at the well-being of his wife and kids. "It was far more dramatic than anything at the Oscars."

Passengers - which also included British model Jodie Kidd, 31 - were asked to remain seated while officers attended to the incident. A police spokesman confirms no arrests were made but says investigations are ongoing.

Liam Neeson: Greek gods are all the rage — Wrath of the Titans is coming [Video] (MEMEBURN)

By Michelle Atagana: Managing Ed.

I suppose when I was eight and I watched the original Clash of the Titans with Laurence Olivier, Harry Hamlin and Maggie Smith I did wish there was a sequel.

Then a decade and a bit later when I grew up and watched the remake, I was unimpressed.

So no I actually wasn’t looking for a sequel but now we have one. Warner Bros sent out this larger than life trailer over a week ago and there’s been some interest. Kara Swisher at AllThingsD sounds pretty excited about it or it could just be because it stars Liam Neeson and has A LOT of special effects.

Here is the premise, it’s 10 years later, good old Perseus is chilling on some Greek or Ethiopian (you never know) isle with his kid as a single dad. His wife is either dead, ran off with a better looking guy or Gemma Arterton (the actress that played his love in the last movie) couldn’t be bothered to come back for another installment.

Either way, Perseus is a single dad who finds out that his king of the gods dad has been kidnapped by Kronos, his granddad, a Titan, with the help of his uncle Hades and big brother, Ares (god of war) — following? Good.

Hugh Bonneville: Conquering the Antarctic Interview (CL LANDSCAPES)

Conquering the Antarctic Interview: Hugh Bonneville

Ahead of the final concert in our Conquering the Antarctic tour this Saturday, we caught up with Hugh Bonneville, acclaimed actor from ITV's Downton Abbey, to talk to him about his involvement in the tour

What drew you to take part in the Conquering the Antarctic tour and what do you know about the story of Captain Scott's expedition to the South Pole?

The story of Captain Scott is something that I have known about from childhood, like every boy and girl from my generation; one of the great adventures, albeit with a tragic ending. I remember from an early age being inspired by the grandeur and the ambition of the expedition, despite the tragic nature of it all. Of course it was 1912, the year of the Titanic and the year of Captain Scott, what a year! It’s full of schoolboy heroism but ultimate folly in the end; the flawed ambition of Empire.

Captain Scott's final diaries are at the heart of the concert tour; do you keep a diary? If so how long have you kept one for and why?

I haven’t kept a diary since I was 18! It was usually full of what a terrible result I had in a football match; why wasn’t I any good at goalkeeping?

To read the diaries of Captain Scott in the context of the Vaughan Williams music (which will be performed alongside the readings in the concert) is very moving. You see the confidence with which the polar party set out, the camaraderie of the men and Scott’s admiration for his team; the great chemistry between the men and Scott’s determination to keep his leadership up, despite the will, gradually beginning to slip away.

Benedict Cumberbatch: Moriarty unlikely to r (NME)eturn

Sherlock creator Steven Moffat has said that villain Moriarty is unlikely to return to the show.

The detective’s arch enemy, played in the BBC's updated version by Andrew Scott, was apparently killed in the second series finale The Reichenbach Fall. And now Moffat has said that viewers should not expect to see him again.

He told the Radio Times: "We need to find new villains, we need to find new ideas, otherwise the show doesn’t keep growing.Moriarty was a one-shot deal in the original [books]. I don’t want it to turn into a show that's about one villain and one hero. Moriarty was great because he was a surprise. Every time you bring him back he won’t be as big a surprise.

Benedict Cumberbatch Talks About His Work On ‘The Hobbit’ + Martin Freeman Playing Bilbo Baggins (FLICKS AND BITS)

“It’s a sort of wonderful ongoing process. I spent a lot of time recording voice as well as doing movements. So, it was sort of freeing; it was fun. It was like playing a game. It’s going to be an amazing film; it’s going to be a real treat.

I watched ‘The Lord of the Rings’ again before I started working, and the way those films grow in depth of craft on every level are extraordinary. Their mark is for that.”

Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings,” which Jackson and his film-making team brought to the big screen in the fantastic blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar-winning ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.’

Henry Cavill is best Superman you could have, says 'Immortals' Tarsem (DIGITAL SPY)

Published Friday, Mar 2 2012, 4:00am EST |
By Simon Reynolds

Tarsem has described his Immortals star Henry Cavill as the "perfect" choice to play Superman. British actor Cavill was cast in Zack Snyder's superhero reboot Man of Steel after playing Theseus in the 3D fantasy epic, which is released on Blu-ray and DVD this week."I think he's about the best Superman you could ever have," the filmmaker said.

"When I first saw him - this was before I knew he [auditioned] for Superman, because the last Superman had been made a year and a half before Immortals and tanked - I said, 'This is Clark Kent!'"

Tarsem, a former film school colleague of Man of Steel helmer Snyder, said that the Watchmen director would be "blind not to see how right he was for [the role]". "He's very gentle, manly, just everything was perfect for it," Tarsem said of Cavill. "He was so excited when he got it but I didn't doubt for a second that he wouldn't get it."

Julian Fellowes - 'Titanic' (THE SUN)

Downton Abbey's Julian Fellowes on his new ITV drama Titanic
By LEIGH HOLMWOOD, Deputy TV Editor
Published: Today at 00:32

DOWNTON Abbey creator Julian Fellowes says his lavish new £11million Titanic drama differs from the smash hit 1997 movie – as it tells the whole story of the ship's voyage for the first time.

"Right from the start we set out to tell the story of the whole ship. It's a great tragedy, obviously, but I was thrilled by the idea of having a chance to shape another version of it." The new series, called Titanic, will air later this month to mark the 100th anniversary of the disaster, in which the ship — once dubbed "unsinkable" — hit an iceberg on its maiden voyage to New York with the loss of 1,500 lives.

Julian said the series — already dubbed "Downton at sea" — would follow his tried-and-tested formula of interweaving the lives of the upper and lower classes. And he admitted there were other similarities to Downton, which has been compared to a soap because of its pace and storylines. He said: "Yes, it has a multi-story arc. It is a structure I like, it suits me. I like the pace and all the stories happening at once."

Julian — who described himself as a confirmed Titanorak — insisted interest in the doomed vessel was greater than ever, despite the story passing from living memory. He said: "There are certain disasters that seem to latch on to our psyche. The Titanic is the perfect disaster — it has everything in a compact form.

"There are rich aristocrats, movie stars, bankers... In steerage, there are all of these desperate people heading for new lives. "They took their whole families and they were wiped out.

Meryl Streep’s girls pick a winner for their Oscar winning mother (MAIL ON LINE)

By BAZ BAMIGBOYE

When Mamie and Grace Gummer saw what their mother Meryl originally planned to wear to Sunday’s Oscars, they told her to get it off - and replace it with a gown that made her look like a winner. That’s where the gold lamé Lanvin gown came in.

It was made from old plastic bottles - that’s what Colin Firth’s wife Livia told me.She organised eco-friendly dresses and suits (Kenneth Branagh wore one) for the Oscar red carpet, including the dress chosen by Streep’s daughters for the ceremony. And she duly picked up the award for her brilliant portrait of Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.

Streep and her representatives refused to divulge the provenance of the dress dumped by the Gummer girls (they use the name of their dad Don Gummer, who’s been wed to Meryl since 1978).

Colin Firth bags himself a new wife for his Railway Man role (MAIL ON LINE)

By BAZ BAMIGBOYE
Last updated at 12:38 AM on 2nd March 2012

Oscar-winning star Colin Firth has found a new wife: Nicole Kidman.

She will take the role over from Rachel Weisz as the remarkable woman who helped her husband try to overcome nightmares caused by his horrific World War II experiences. The Academy Award-winning actress was persuaded by Firth and producer Andy Paterson to star in The Railway Man, which is based on the true story of Eric Lomax, a second lieutenant in the Royal Corps of Signals who was captured by Japanese forces.

As a prisoner of war, he was tortured and made to work on the Burma-Siam railway, also known as the Death Railway - its construction was fictionalised in David Lean’s 1957 film The Bridge On The River Kwai. Lomax’s second wife, Patricia Wallace, known as Patti, will be portrayed by Kidman. Ms Weisz was all set to play her but she has to do additional shooting on two movies, The Bourne Legacy and Oz: The Great And Powerful - plus she wants to be on hand for the U.S. release of Terence Davies’s haunting film The Deep Blue Sea this month.

The Hobbit: The New Hobbit Video Blog Has Arrived! (CINEMA BLEND)

Author: Eric Eisenberg

While director Peter Jackson used a good amount of green screen while making the Lord of the Rings trilogy (and to excellent effect, mind you), what's even more impressive about those movies is the amount that was actually shot on location.

Jackson filmed all over various parts of New Zealand while making those movies and took full advantage of the incredible splendor that the natural environment had to offer. Obviously it worked to great effect, as the original trilogy is one of the most beautiful and epic collection of films ever put to film, so why would the director change it while making The Hobbit?

Minnie Driver: 'I was young and I fell for Matt Damon' (TELEGRAPH)

By Jessica Salter
12:25PM GMT 01 Mar 2012

We were taking a break from filming a really pivotal scene in Good Will Hunting, and Matt Damon and Gus Van Sant, the director, were having an intense chat about the script – they changed a lot of it as we went along and they often broke off to have serious discussions.

I think I'm laughing at Ben Affleck, who was just out of frame Рhe is a very funny guy. This scene was important; it is the moment where Skylar, my character, keeps asking Will Hunting, Matt's character, how he can do her organic chemistry paper in five seconds flat, when it takes her four weeks to figure it out. Matt had been at Harvard, and the idea for Good Will Hunting came out of a writing assignment РWill Hunting is a genius who is forced to see a therapist, played by Robin Williams, and study advanced mathematics with a renowned professor, played by Stellan Skarsg̴rd, in order to avoid going to jail.

He and Ben developed the script purely so they could have a shot at being actors. At this point they were completely unknown, but I had left drama school at 21 and made Circle of Friends (1995), Big Night and Sleepers (both 1996) and Grosse Pointe Blank (1997), which was just out and quite a big hit, so I was on a bit of a roll.

Cumberbatch watched the Oscars with his "very close" friend Lydia Hearst, the 27-year-old model daughter of famous 1960s abductee Patty Hearst and great-granddaughter of legendary newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, at the annually held Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party, before stopping in at the highly exclusive Vanity Fair after-party.

"It's extraordinary," he said of the whole infectious Oscar celebration. "Just wonderful to be invited to the party and feel like you belong to something as glamorous on any kind of level, he told ITV1's Daybreak on the red carpet leading up to the Vanity Fair event, reports Digital Spy

Keira Knightley as Anna Karenina? Is There an Oscar in Her Future? (E! ONLINE)

Today 10:45 AM PST by PETER GICAS

Think Keira Knightley should begin working on an acceptance speech for next year now? Sure, her upcoming film, Anna Karenina, didn't make our first go-round of likely 2013 Oscar contenders, but after seeing these lush new stills, we're inclined to think this adaptation of the Leo Tolstoy classic may eventually be in the running for a few golden guys.

Oh, and the movie was penned by renowned Arcadia playwright Tom Stoppard, who made off with an Academy Award for cowriting the screenplay for 1998's Shakespeare in Love, which also went on to win...yep, Best Picture. We'll see what happens in a little less than 12 months.

Colin Firth talks about Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy and John LeCarre (DIGITAL JOURNAL)

When it came time Firth to portray his famous spy character, Bill Haydon, to play the part, director Alfredson could haveinstructed him to read a lot of John Le Carré novels or simply rely on his memory about all the Le Carré books he had ever read.

Firth says he wasn't asked to do either one by the film's director. "Thomas Alfredson isn't an instructing sort of person, I'd read a few." Firth says of the Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy helmsman. "I think that everyone has. I think that he operates not in one world, but in quite a few diverse ones.

I think the source material for this was the book itself, really, and he's also very eloquent about the world around this. He very much was a first hand occupant of it in a way. Spies aren't the sort of people who are going to make themselves available for research on the whole. So, if you have someone who's been as close to the intelligence service as he has then that's pretty handy."

Early on during the film's release, Firth was quoted as saying that Le Carré books were just little boy's tales. Despite the British presses accusation, Firth was not trying to be rude, coy and dismissive about the writer's work. "I think that was probably, certainly earlier on that was probably…I mean, he's a popular writer and I think that's a bit of a crime in the critical community," says Firth, who is currently preparing to workwith Renee Zellweger on at the Bridget Jones sequel -- Bridget Jones's Baby.

"I remember somebody writing very astutely about Alan Ayckbourn, who's a great comic playwright. I think it was Michael Billington, saying that he commits the worst offenses that you can possibly commit against any judgment of being a great writer. One is that you're comic and two is that you're prolific and seen as being popular. If you're any of those things you can't be a great writer."

David Tennant: Tennant’s Waiting for the Boatman (KASTERBOROUS WEBVINE)

BY ANDREW REYNOLDS – FEBRUARY 29, 2012

Fresh from his Best Actor gong for Kafka: The Musical at this years inaugural BBC Audio Drama Awards David Tennant is set to star in Waiting for the Boatman – a BBC Radio Four drama by Stephen Wakelam about mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of Italian painter Caravaggio as told through the eyes of his former apprentice and model Mario Minniti.

Caravaggio’s demise has been the subject of many wild theories since he drew his last breath some 400 years ago in Naples – conflicting reports place the painter of The Martyrdom of St Martin dying alone from Malaria on a Tuscan beach, cut down by the Knights of Malta or, less interestingly and more likely for such a hell raiser dying in a hospital bed.

Benedict Cumberbatch: Matt Smith plays down Benedict Cumberbatch 'Doctor Who' rumours

It had been reported that the 'Sherlock' star was in line to play The Master

Matt Smith has claimed to have no knowledge about rumours Benedict Cumberbatch is in line to play The Master in Doctor Who.

It was reported by the Express this week that the Sherlock star had been approached to play the evil Timelord nemesis for the sci-fi show’s 50th anniversary next year. But now Smith, who plays the current incarnation of the Doctor, has denied knowing anything about the claims.

However, he did not deny the casting completely. He told Daybreak: "I know Ben and I've not heard anything about it. But he's a wonderful actor and a mate." He appeared to then play down any rumours: "I think he’s a bit busy being a Star Trek villain, and he's Sherlock Holmes of course, so he's a busy man."

Alan Rickman: Four way tie- his best villainous roles (THE UNIVERSITY OBSERVER)

Fatal Fourway – Worst Villains Played by Alan Rickman
Contributed by Dermot O'Rourke, Film Editor, Aoife Valentine, Otwo Editor, George Morahan, Otwo Editor and Jon Hozier-Byrne, Editor on Thursday, 1 March 2012T

Dermot – Hans Gruber in Die Hard
There is no denying Alan Rickman’s level of awesomeness is unparalleled. It is his general superiority over you and everyone else that has allowed him to portray of some of the best on-screen villains ever. But I think we can all agree that of all Alan Rickmans’s villains, the best is, of course, none other than Die Hard’s Hans Gruber. Gruber had masterminded the perfect plan to steal bearer bonds from the vault of the Nakatomi Corporation before Bruce Willis’ John McClane yippy-ki-ayed himself in the way to put a damper on proceedings.

Despite that the Grubes really has the all the admirable qualities of a great villain. He is calm (when you don’t have his detonators), calculating, and appreciates a fine suit. When certain people are uncooperative with his efficient plan he has no trouble dispatching them without hesitation. After executing the President of the Nakatomi Corporation, Mr. Tagaki, he dryly delivers the most cutting – if not the most villainous – line in cinematic history, “[Mr. Tagaki] will not be joining us for the rest of his life.” Cue mass hysteria. Only a villain with the slick style of The Grubester could cause that much panic with such a delightfully evil quip.

Vote Grubesy for the win!

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel - Film Review (THE UNIVERSITY OBSERVER)

In a Nutshell: A delightfully charming film that is both satisfyingly feel-good and heartbreakingly poignant, although undermined by unnecessary stereotyping.Contributed by Sara Holbrook on Thursday, 1 March 2012

Director: John Madden
Starring: Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Dev Patel Release Date: Out now

Set in India and directed by John Madden (Shakespeare in Love), The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel opens with a bleak outlook on retired life in England for a star-studded cast including Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson and Maggie Smith.

The characters decide to abandon their otherwise comfortable lives for India, where Sonny, played by Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire), runs ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ – an apparently first class and lavish hotel suitable for elderly people.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is, at times, hilarious as well as heartbreakingly sad as the stories of the eclectic group of OAPs unfold. The multitude of characters would seem to make the film confusing, but a few characters soon begin to become prominent.

While Judi Dench (Quantum of Solace) is the narrator (and her story is central to the film), it is Tom Wilkinson’s (Michael Clayton) role that really stands out. His character, Graham, grew up in India and has now returned to track down the man with whom he had a love affair almost forty years ago.

Wilkinson’s brilliantly convincing portrayal as both an eminent judge and a man in love leaves you constantly willing his story to return to the screen.

Lean Bean: ”Clean Skin”, an independently financed British movie starring Sean Bean, has been bought by Warner Bros and is due in UK cinemas on 9th March.

The film began with a budget of around £700K and was said that after investors saw what amazing stunts were being carried out on set (restaurants and cars blowing up and decent Bourne-style fights) the investment increased to just under £2million GBP.

The picture, directed by Hadi Hajaig, sees Sean Bean as a secret service agent pursuing a terrorist. It also features Charlotte Rampling and Michelle Ryan (”Bionic Woman”). Early word suggests this could be a sleeper hit and that director Hadi’s next film is eying up one Nicolas Cage.

Benedict Cumberbatch: Sherlock Holmes star 'very close' to Patty Hearst daughter Lydia (TELEGRAPH)

Benedict Cumberbatch, the British actor who plays Sherlock Holmes in the BBC series, has struck up a “very close” friendship with Lydia Hearst, the daughter of newspaper heiress Patty Hearst, it has emerged.

The 35 year-old, who has won hordes of fans in the hit series based on the stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, has been seen at numerous Hollywood parties with the 27-year-old model over the past month. The pair were seated together at the 20th annual Elton John Aids Foundation Oscars Academy Awards viewing party on Sunday night, it was reported. It comes after the former "Supermodel of the Year”, who uses the surname Hearst in her professional life but was born Hearst-Shaw, was observed with Cumberbatch last month at a Vanity Fair party Cecconi's, the Hollywood restaurant.

The pair reportedly arrived and left together and she happily posed for pictures with Cumberbatch's arm wrapped around her. On Wednesday, a spokesman for Cumberbatch confirmed his client was “very close” friends with Miss Hearst, whose mother was kidnapped in the 1970s.

Benedict Cumberbatch To Be The Master In ‘Doctor Who’? (GEEKS OF DOOM)

Posted by cGt2099

It seems that as soon as filming hits the ground for Doctor Who that the gossip floodgates open for the series. I’ve heard some doozies in my time, but this one (if real) would actually be quite interesting. Express.co.uk and Radio Times are reporting of rumors that Benedict Cumberbatch from Sherlock (and the forthcoming Star Trek 2 and The Hobbit) could have landed the role as The Master for the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who.

Because Cumberbatch is celebrated for his Holmes role in “that other” Steven Moffat series, his name has popped up in the past as potentially appearing on Doctor Who.

'Man of Steel' Countdown: Henry Cavill is a Heckuva Nice Guy By Jeffrey Taylor Feb 28, 2012

I was fortunate to meet Henry Cavill last summer during an official set visit for Man of Steel in Plano, IL. Unfortunately I’m not yet allowed to discuss our conversation, but I don’t think I’ll get in too much trouble by saying that despite Henry’s insane and stressful schedule and workload, he was still a heckuva nice guy.

I even saw him giving each crew member he was working with a smile and a "thank you" whenever he received some help. None of that is required by an actor in his position, but like I said, he’s a heckuva nice guy.
