Gerard Butler: 'Olympus Has Fallen' is really a tale of 'redemption' (LA TIMES)

By Steven Zeitchik
March 22, 2013, 6:01 p.m.

If you head out to see the Gerard Butler action movie “Olympus Has Fallen” this weekend, you’re probably going for the pyrotechnics: The White House is blown to smithereens, the Washington Monument dramatically implodes, many bad guys die violently.

But Butler, who stars as the fallen Secret Service agent and one-man wrecking crew Mike Banning in the D.C.-under-fire-from-North-Korean-terrorists tale, sees in it something a little more … nuanced.

“This movie is a hero's journey about a guy who faces his demons and finds his redemption,” Butler told The Times when asked what he thought the movie was really about. Butler's character is wracked by guilt over a mistake that led to the death of the first lady.

Dan Stevens Is REALLY Over Downton Abbey By Amanda Dobbins (VULTURE)

At a party to “promote British tourism” yesterday, Dan Stevens (a.k.a. Matthew Crawley) was asked a question about his recent Downton departure — which makes sense, since the show is a major cultural export and also because Dan Stevens is only famous because of Downton Abbey. His response? “It's nice that people care, I suppose, about the show, but yeah, you know ... I had to do what I had to do.” Oh. Well, then, maybe he’d like to comment on his recent change in appearance, since it caused such an Internet stir? “Really? OK, I suppose. There's so much else going on in the world.”

Jude Law Quits ‘Jane Got a Gun’ (THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER)

The drama on indie western Jane Got a Gun has intensified, with the news that Jude Law has now exited the movie, reports Yahoo News.

Director Lynne Ramsay controversially didn't turn up for her first day on the set of the film in Santa Fe, N.M.

Producer Scott Steindorff was quick to lambast Ramsay, who had been key to the film's development, for her nonappearance, calling her decision “insane.”

It then emerged that Gavin O'Connor, director of Warrior, had been drafted in to replace Ramsay.

Law left the production because he signed on to work with Ramsay, not O'Connor, said Yahoo.

Letter from John Watson - Watson Reviews Violin Online On Behalf Of “Sherlock” March 20, 2013 By Dan Koelsch

6. Dr. John H. Watson
on behalf of Sherlock Holmes
221B Baker Street
LONDON
NW1 6XE

July 28th, 2011

Cécile and Chris at Cardiff Violins,

I just wanted to say thanks on behalf of my friend Sherlock Holmes for the violin he recently purchased from you. He would thank you himself; only, well Sherlock doesn’t really do that sort of thing.

You were extremely patient with him, much more than he deserved which I should also thank you for, as a lot of people find him ‘difficult’. Thought you handled the situation very well, especially when he insisted on deducing the history of each instrument he picked up, in addition to identifying the rosin dust from each bow that had previously been used! Anyway sorry about that, he’s always like it and yes it does get annoying, but at least you don’t have to live with him.

I don’t know much about violins myself, but it looks a lovely violin to me. The sound it makes when Sherlock plays it is beautiful and the other evening he treated me to a rendition of Bach’s Partita No.1, which sounded particularly marvelous on it. He seems very pleased anyway, that is to say he hasn’t complained at all and tells me playing it helps him think, which believe me is high praise indeed.

Yours Sincerely,

Dr. John H. Watson

Henry Cavill Talks Man Of Steel And Comic Books By Cody "The Thorverine" Ferrell on Mar 12, 2013 COMIC BOOK THERAPY

Yesterday we got a glimpse at Total Film’s special Man of Steel cover featuring Henry Cavill and Amy Adams, and today we get a few interesting quotes from Cavill featured inside the magazine. The man who will bring Superman back to life on the big screen this summer touched on the films more grounded approach as well as his comic book knowledge.

The British actor said Man of Steel is Superman “for a modern age” and that the film tackles universal questions about Clark/Superman’s purpose in life. Overall, it’s going to be a grounded approach:

This is a Superman for a modern age. It’s not betraying anything that Superman is, but it is grounding everything in reality. It’s the story of this incredible being who can do incredible things, but whom we can associate with. Because he’s gone through troubling stuff and had to make tough choices.

Cary Grant, the one and only By Laurie Bennett March 21, 2013 at 6:05am (MUCKETY)

The New York Times has proclaimed Justin Timberlake the new Cary Grant, which must make George Clooney the old Cary Grant.

The premise for the Times verdict is Timberlake’s suave new look, a tailored contrast to his earlier boy-band bagginess.

Grant, Alfred Hitchcock’s favorite actor, set a standard, sartorial and otherwise, for later generations of actors.

The comparison is made with so many handsome, witty leading men that it has become a cliche.

Hugh Grant (no relation) runs a close second to Clooney as the chosen successor. The Daily Mail pointed out: “Both were born in England, have similar Byronic sex appeal, look good in suits, and excel at playing well-heeled characters.”

Others who have been promoted as the next Archibald Alexander Leach include Bruce Willis (when he had hair), Pierce Brosnan (before he serenaded Meryl), Mark Wahlberg, Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Ashton Kutcher and Ewan McGregor. (The McGregor analogy makes no sense whatsoever. He obviously is the next Christopher Plummer.)

Vanity Fair noted this trend almost a decade ago, identifying Frankie Muniz, TV’s Malcolm in the middle, as the most inexplicable nominee. When told that a critic had described him as “the Cary Grant of kid stars,” Muniz replied, “That’s cool… but I don’t know who Cary Grant is.”

Matthew Macfadyen: Buring reunites with Macfadyen

MyAnna Buring has said it was like working with an "old friend" when she reunited with her Ripper Street co-star Matthew Macfadyen for the big screen.

The actress shot Epic, due out next year, with Matthew in Georgia, after filming BBC One drama Ripper Street together.

"It's been great, lovely," she said of working with Matthew on the movie, the story of an English filmmaker who is hired to direct a huge production in the Caucasus region of Europe.

"It's like working with an old mate the second time around so it's fun."

MyAnna, who attended the First Light Awards this week, to celebrate the next generation of British filmmakers, is about to start working on a second series of Ripper Street, which has been recommissioned despite complaints it was too violent.

As it happened, I ended up caring deeply for him, both as the brave, indomitable Tracie, and as the heartbreakingly lonely Simon, in the first of Jimmy McGovern's four-part drama examining the British justice system.

Simon was a man we could all relate to - undervalued at work in his classroom, consoled by literature at home, this was a tragic, timeless everyman, except this being Jimmy McGovern and 2012, his only solace was transforming himself into Tracie and hitting in the town in a frock.

Sean Bean in Simon mode, betrayed by his secretly married lover

Although Tracie's breasts were a little cartoonly pneumatic, Bean has revealed in recent interviews that he also realised in them great statements of power, and this became clear as he fought off derisive comments and stares from all around. He may have been lonely and fearful, but he was no victim.

Benedict Cumberbatch concerns Kirk and Spock in new 'Star Trek Into Darkness' images Just what is the new villain planning for the Enterprise crew? BY DAVE LEWIS WEDNESDAY, MAR 20, 2013 1:15 PM (HIT FIX)

We still don't know just who exactly Benedict Cumberbatch is playing in J.J. Abrams' upcoming "Star Trek Into Darkness," but according to these two new images, Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) are worried about his villainous persona. The Enterprise officers also look as if they've taken a fashion cue from Cumberbatch's character, as Kirk and Spock seem to be taking the film's title seriously by donning black Starfleet uniforms.

Luke Evans: ‘Fast and Furious 6′: Behind The Scenes (INQUISITOR)

Here is a look at Fast and Furious 6, behind the scenes.

Two new recruits have joined the ranks of Vin Diesel and friends. Luke Evans (The Hobbit) and Gina Carano (Haywire) are the new additions behind the wheel as the Fast and The Furious franchise enters its sixth film.

In between takes on a cold production set a tad outside London Luke Evans said, “It was quite weird, to be honest, because they’ve known each other for 10 years.”

Luke Evans expands on his experience with the crew:

“As always happens on big movies, they forget to introduce you. … I’m handcuffed, with a bloody face, and it’s the whole team, and my first introduction is to shake hands with a handcuff. I had to insult a lot of them, get dragged down the stairs by Dwayne (Johnson), get punched in the face by Paul (Walker), and then eyeballed by Vin. This is the movies for you, you never get the normal introduction you would in any other job. And I think they’re probably enjoying the fact there’s a new boy, different to them, bringing a new energy, another dynamic.”

Richard Armitage hopes "The Hobbit" film will stand ‘test of time’ March 19, 2013 | 2:30 p.m. (LA TIMES)

For his turn as dwarf king Thorin Oakenshield in Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” actor Richard Armitage drew inspiration from a very different regal figure created not by J.R.R. Tolkien, but rather William Shakespeare.

“I was in a production of ‘Macbeth,’” Armitage told Hero Complex on the occasion of the film’s release last December. “So I went back to all my notes about ‘Macbeth,’ because I just felt there was something about that character unwinding that was relevant to Thorin unwinding in this story.”

Thorin, of course, plays a key role in the first of Peter Jackson’s planned three-part adaptation of Tolkien’s beloved 1937 children’s novel, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” which makes the trek to Blu-ray and DVD this week.

Audiences have a new opportunity to enjoy Armitage’s performance as the mighty warrior who joins forces with an initially reluctant Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) to reclaim his homeland and the treasure that’s been stolen by the dragon Smaug.

Michael Fassbender gets close to mystery blonde in a plunging outfit on the pavement outside a London club By LUCY BUCKLAND (MAIL ON LINE)

He is one of Hollywood's hottest bachelors and it seems one blonde certainly couldn't wait to get her claws into Michael Fassbender.

Prometheus star Fassbender, 35, was seen leaving the Groucho club in London with a mystery blonde - and although the actor tried to hide his handsome face with a dirty basketball hat as he left, he couldn't help but be recognised.

Heartthrob Fassbender, who split from Shame co-star Nicole Beharie in January after a disastrous couple's holiday, looked to be wasting no time charming the young blonde in the street.

But after being spotted by movie fans Fassbender turned away from his flirting partner and appeared to walk off.

The charming actor's love interest looked slightly put off by his actions, although it is not known if they exchanged numbers.

Actor Richard Armitage has long history with 'Hobbit' (UPI)

By KAREN BUTLER, United Press International

NEW YORK, March 19 (UPI) -- Well-known British TV actor Richard Armitage says starring as dwarf leader Thorin Oakenshield in "The Hobbit" movies has been a huge milestone in his career.

The handsome 41-year-old has appeared in the small-screen dramas "Strike Back," "MI-5," "Robin Hood," "Cold Feet" and "The Vicar of Dibley," as well as the popular miniseries "North and South." His portrayal of the brooding hero Thorin has brought him further international fame.

Asked in New York recently if landing the role of Thorin was a big milestone in his career, Armitage told United Press International, "Huge."

"It's kind of hard to describe, really," he acknowledged. "You get the phone call saying [writer-producer-director] Peter Jackson would like to meet you and then you wonder if you'll get the job and then it all starts to happen.

"And I had this incredible year and during this incredible year, I'm thinking, 'Even if no one ever sees the film, I've still had an incredible year.'

Martin Clunes: How we made Men Behaving Badly (THE GUARDIAN)

From farting in a birthing pool to rolling down a giant penis, Martin Clunes and producer Beryl Vertue remember the laddish sitcom that defined an era
Interviews by Kate Abbott
The Guardian, Monday 18 March 2013 14.30 EDT

Martin Clunes, actor

Men Behaving Badly didn't start with a script coming through the door. It got going simply because Harry Enfield signed up to star in it. His original vision was for it not to be like a usual sitcom. Then we made the pilot and it shocked him. It was bad. It didn't faze me since I was nobody from nowhere, but you could see Harry wanted out. He was under contract, though, so had to do one series. I've not watched the pilot since. Actually, no one has. It's never been aired. It was everything Harry railed against: coarse, with the director saying you've got to be chalk and cheese – abrasive like The Likely Lads. But what worked about Men Behaving Badly was that Gary and Tony were so different, yet glued to each other when ridiculous things happened.

Only after Harry bailed did the show get popular. I knew Neil Morrissey because we'd done a rubbish spaghetti western in Italy, so I put him forward as Harry's replacement. Beryl Vertue was an empowering producer: she let us have real input, let the monkeys run the zoo. And Simon Nye, the writer, was up for anything. We just showed off for each other. It was the best job – not a threatening-edgy show, but still cheeky and on the edge. I have a great memory of sitting in a birthing pool with Neil, farting. I don't care if our characters were heroes or fools. People were fond of them. They still are.

Martin Freeman: Making First "Hobbit" Film Was "Huge" The first installment of Peter Jackson's new Tolkein trilogy arrives on Blu Ray

As “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” – the first installment director Peter Jackson’s long-awaited film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkein’s beloved prequel to “The Lord of the Rings” saga – makes its way to Blu-ray, Bilbo Baggins himself – in the form of actor Martin Freeman (“Sherlock”) – looks back at the opening chapter, recalling the journey from green screen sound stages to a full-fledged Shire.

What was the experience of making one of these films with Peter?
I think I probably did myself a favor and tried not to do too much imagining about what it might be. I think whatever you conjure up nothing ever is what you imagine it to be. Whether it’s your trip here or your trip home, nothing is ever how you’re going to imagine it. So I suppose I was expecting the unexpected. The only thing I knew it would be was huge. I knew it would feel big, and I was right there. It did feel big. But outside of that, I had a feeling of what Pete was like as a director, but I didn’t have direct experience of him. I knew a couple of the actors but not well. It was really stepping into a different territory. Very often, you’re at least familiar with a few people from around, but I’ve never been to New Zealand before. So it was really much a fresh slate really. I didn’t know Ian [McKellen]. I didn’t know most of the people on it, by a long shot.

Tom Hiddleston wants to work with Daniel Day-Lewis

Speaking to BANG Showbiz at the South Bank Sky Arts Awards 2013, where he picked up the Times Breakthrough Award, Tom said: ''I'd love to have a chance, even a chance, of trying to work with Daniel Day-Lewis because I admire him so much. I am so intrigued. He's always inspired me.

''Just the commitment he takes on every time he chooses to work and kind of what he chooses. You can always see this. He gives 110%.''

The 31-year-old actor - whose CV includes 'War Horse' and 'The Hollow Crown' - once had the chance to meet his idol and ruined the moment by ''gushing'' about how much he loved his work.

He reminisced: ''I met him once, a couple of years ago. It was long before I'd made a film and I was working in theatre and I happened to be somebody's plus one [to an event]. I stopped him on the stairs as I had to tell him he's one of the greatest things; being an actor.

''He said, in his beautiful English/Irish [accent], 'Thank you so much, it means a lot, thank you so much'. It was basically me gushing about how much I loved 'In the Name of the Father' and 'The Last of the Mohicans'.''

Tom Hiddleston talks Loki, Ray Stevenson on Volstagg Tuesday, 19 March 2013 (FLICKERING MYTH)

After menacing the God of Thunder and Earth's Mightiest Heroes as Loki in Thor and The Avengers, Tom Hiddleston has become a firm favourite among fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Hiddleston is set to return to Asgard this year alongside Chris Hemsworth in the solo sequel Thor: The Dark World from director Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones), and speaking to Zap2It, the British actor has expressed his love for the God of Mischief, stating that he's happy to continue portraying Loki for as long as Marvel and the audience will have him:

"It is a rare thing to be connected to a character that people enjoy watching. I never expected it my wildest dreams. You don't dare sign up for that as an actor. All any actor can see is they might play a character that somehow ignites the public imagination and it is thrilling when you do. It is in good fun. The fun of playing Loki is the character itself constantly keeps people guessing. And he provokes a double-edged sentiment in the people who allegedly he has invested in, and who he cares about. As someone, who was then cast out as the black sheep of the royal family, whether he can be accepted into that fold is a question that remains to be answered. Just how dark and evil he has become is another question I hope the film will answer."

Meanwhile, at the premiere of G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Red Carpet News TV caught up with fellow Brit Ray Stevenson, who briefly spoke about returning as Volstagg in November's Thor sequel, along with Christopher Eccleston's (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra) new bad guy Malekith the Accursed, and the possibility of the Warriors Three popping up in 2015's The Avengers 2:

Julian Fellowes to quit writing 'Downton Abbey'? Published Tuesday, Feb 19 2013, 12:13pm EST | By Morgan Jeffery (DIGITAL SPY)

Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes has hinted that the hit period drama could continue without him.

Fellowes told The New York Times that his commitment to US pilot The Gilded Age could force him to abandon his Downton commitments.

"If I'm doing a series at NBC, I would not be able to write all of Downton and all of that series at the same time," he reasoned. "I would hope that by the time all the hurdles have been cleared, the timing makes it so I can then concentrate on the new series.

"If Downton goes on - of course, that's not my decision - then it would be with other writers. Perhaps with me supervising, but with other writers."
