Upstairs Downstairs axed as BBC admits defeat in battle of the Sunday night dramas MAIL ON-LINE

(Buh - Bye)

Upstairs Downstairs was revived in 2010 after 40 years off screen The second six-part series drew 6.5 million viewers when it began in January But within a week 700,000 had switched off and by the time the series ended last month, just 4.45 million were watching. By LAURA GOULD and CHRIS HASTINGS

It was billed as the BBC’s big-budget fightback in television’s Sunday night ratings battle. The Corporation hoped its lavish new version of Upstairs Downstairs would serve up the same sort of success enjoyed by ITV’s country house saga Downton Abbey. But after two series it seems the BBC has admitted defeat – axeing the revived period drama because of falling ratings.

Turn-off: Keeley Hawes and Ed Stoppard as aristocratic Hollands

Yesterday it was confirmed that there would not be a third series after more than two million viewers turned off between the first episode and the last. The decision comes despite attempts to ‘sex up’ the plot with the introduction of lesbian archaeologist Dr Blanche Mottershead, played by ER and Moll Flanders star Alex Kingston. She was seen in bed with her bisexual lover, played by Emilia Fox.

Colin Firth: 'They're killing us': world's most endangered tribe cries for help Gethin Chamberlain The Observer, Saturday 21 April 2012

Logging companies keen to exploit Brazil's rainforest have been accused by human rights organisations of using gunmen to wipe out the Awá, a tribe of just 355. Survival International, with backing from Colin Firth, is campaigning to stop what a judge referred to as 'genocide'

Trundling along the dirt roads of the Amazon, the giant logging lorry dwarfed the vehicle of the investigators following it. The trunks of nine huge trees were piled high on the back – incontrovertible proof of the continuing destruction of the world's greatest rainforest and its most endangered tribe, the Awá. Yet as they travelled through the jungle early this year, the small team from Funai – Brazil's National Indian Foundation – did not dare try to stop the loggers; the vehicle was too large and the loggers were almost certainly armed.

All they could do was video the lorry and add the film to the growing mountain of evidence showing how the Awá – with only 355 surviving members, more than 100 of whom have had no contact with the outside world – are teetering on the edge of extinction. It is a scene played out throughout the Amazon as the authorities struggle to tackle the powerful illegal logging industry.

But it is not just the loss of the trees that has created a situation so serious that it led a Brazilian judge, José Carlos do Vale Madeira, to describe it as "a real genocide". People are pouring on to the Awá's land, building illegal settlements, running cattle ranches.

Hired gunmen – known as pistoleros – are reported to be hunting Awá who have stood in the way of land-grabbers. Members of the tribe describe seeing their families wiped out. Human rights campaigners say the tribe has reached a tipping point and only immediate action by the Brazilian government to prevent logging can save the tribe.

This week Survival International will launch a new campaign to highlight the plight of the Awá, backed by Oscar-winning actor Colin Firth. In a video to be launched on Wednesday, Firth will ask the Brazilian government to take urgent action to protect the tribe. The 51-year-old, who starred in last year's hit movie The King's Speech, and came to prominence playing Mr Darcy in the 1995 BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, delivers an appeal to camera calling on Brazil's minister of justice to send in police to drive out the loggers.

As reported by Deadline, Bale and David O. Russell are circling the real life-inspired tale of an FBI investigation which led to the arrest of a number of notable figures in the 1970s. Emily Blunt, Rosemarie DeWitt on improvising sisterhood in Lynn Shelton’s new film (WASHINGTON POST)

NEW YORK — Shot over 12 days in a cabin on a remote island off Washington state, Lynn Shelton’s “Your Sister’s Sister” is a naturalistic, largely improvised film that, despite its seeming artlessness, builds its drama organically and effectively.

It’s the fourth feature from the Seattle-based Shelton, the director of “Humpday,” whose light, comedic touch and collaborative, low-budget process have made her a cult favorite and a sought-after filmmaker for actors eager for freedom and realism. “Your Sister’s Sister” stars Emily Blunt and Rosemarie DeWitt (the most established actors yet to work with Shelton) as sisters whose relationship is challenged by a visiting friend (Mark Duplass)

Ahead of its June 15 release, the film has been a hit on the festival circuit, including this week’s Tribeca Film Festival. The women of “Your Sister’s Sister” — Shelton, DeWitt and Blunt — gathered for a recent interview where they reflected on the atypical process of the movie, and exhibited their own cheerful sisterhood.

AP: Why do you work this way, with so much improvised dialogue?

Shelton: The actors feel more invested. I want them to feel like the character is a glove, that they’re just stepping into and it’s not this reach. You’re not trying to put yourself into this predetermined box. I really want them to bring themselves to it. I try to make it really organic and very collaborative. I’m basically a hippie.

'Bridget Jones 3' Script In The Works, Hugh Grant Confirms Leading man tells MTV News he expects 'more fisticuffs' with Colin Firth. By Jocelyn Vena (MTV)

The last time anyone heard about the third film in the "Bridget Jones" franchise, the script was still being reworked to suit lead actors Renée Zellweger, Colin Firth and Hugh Grant. But fans have been getting antsy about the long-rumored sequel, with some wondering if the next chapter in bumbling Bridget's story will ever be told.

When MTV News caught up with Grant in New York City on Friday, he explained that the British love triangle will return to the big screen ... eventually. However, script problems continue to delay production. "I've seen some scripts," Grant said. "They haven't quite hit the nail yet, but they will. They're working on it."

Jeremy Irons: Online Only: More from Jeremy Irons (USA WEEKEND)

Jeremy Irons stars in Season 2 of Showtime’s The Borgias .

When he’s not acting, Irons, 63, likes living on the edge because it “makes you appreciate life. It brings the joy of being alive into sharper focus.”

What else does Irons appreciate? His marriage to actress Sinéad Cusack: “The great thing about “for better or for worse” is that if you really take that seriously, then you find that when as a couple you’ve got through difficult periods and you’re still together, you’re much stronger.”

What does it take for a man to wow a woman? “I have no idea. I’m constantly enthralled by women and always want to learn about them. Probably listening is a bit of the secret.”

What advice did you give your sons (Sam, 33, and Max, 26) about women? “None. You bring up your children hopefully to be interesting, honest, delightful people. There’s an awful lot you can’t tell children. They find it quite difficult to believe you ever had relationships. Most generations think they invented sex.”

Hugh Laurie: Spoiler - Clue to how ‘House’ ends, and it’s not pretty POST STAFF WRITER Last Updated: 2:00 PM, April 20, 2012 Posted: 10:04 PM, April 19, 2012 (NEW YORK POST)

Is “House” giving away its big finale moment next month in the title of the episode. The finale — set for May 21 — is called “ Everyone Dies.” That’s a less-than-subtle clue for how the star, Hugh Laurie, plans to end his 8-year run as the brilliant but irascible diagnostician, Dr. Gregory House.

It appears to be a reference as well to the very first episode of the show in 2004, which was called “Everyone Lies.” The release of the finale title set off a wave of speculation among fans that the doctor may meet his end along with the series.

Eddie Redmayne: "Birdsong" on Masterpiece Classic April 22 and 29

Watch Birdsong Preview on PBS. See more from Masterpiece.

In the ruinous trenches of northern France, Lieutenant Stephen Wraysford (Eddie Redmayne, My Week with Marilyn, Richard II) barely seems to register the death and destruction all around him. His eyes are fixed instead on his drawings and his deck of cards, and his mind is focused on the memory of his one love, Isabelle Azaire (Clémence Poesy, 127 Hours, Harry Potter). For Stephen, events unfolding on the Allied front in 1916 are eclipsed by his memories of the summer of 1910, when he met Isabelle in Amiens. When Isabelle leaves her oppressive husband René (Laurent Lafitte), the two lovers share a blissful existence that seems to make up for a lifetime of loneliness and isolation for Stephen. But their idyll is cut short when Isabelle leaves without explanation. Stephen battles the Germans on the front six years later, as he also battles his own internal grief and confusion over his loss. Adapted by Abi Morgan (Iron Lady, The Hour) from the Sebastian Faulks novel, Birdsong tells the story of Stephen's awakening to love and his determination to reclaim it.

Sherlock site to publish book of fans' Holmes stories Proceeds will go to the campaign to save Undershaw, the house in which Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote tales of the great detective Paul Jones (RADIO TIMES)

Fans of Sherlock Holmes have a chance to become part of a publishing tribute to the great detective by submitting stories for inclusion in a new book to be compiled by website Sherlockology.

Sherlock’s Home: The Empty House - named after the adventure in which Holmes reappears following his apparent demise at the foot of the Reichenbach Falls - will be a selection of short stories and poems.

Proceeds from the sale of the book will go to the campaign to save Undershaw, the former Surrey residence of Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, in which he penned adventures including The Hound of the Baskervilles and The Empty House.

Aspiring writers are challenged to come up with a story based on Conan Doyle’s characters, or on Undershaw itself. Copyright issues mean fans of BBC1's Sherlock cannot use characters created specifically for the series (so well-loved lab geek Molly Hooper, for example, is off limits) but otherwise, it seems, pretty much anything goes...

“You can change the character's genders, ages or nationality,” suggests Sherlockology. “You are limited only by your imaginations; tell a story of [Holmes and Watson] as children, or maybe solving crimes in the Swinging Sixties...

Emily Blunt: From stammer to star: Emily Blunt began acting to help her speech and now she's a Hollywood icon (MIRROR)

One of four children of an actress mother and barrister father, Blunt was born and raised in Roehampton, South London, and began appearing in school plays at 12 because acting was good for her stammer.

“What helped me a lot was taking an acting class because I found it a very liberating experience to be someone else on stage and talk in a different voice that wasn’t my own,” she says.

“It was miraculous how I never stuttered onstage, and I know a lot of stutterers who are actors. Bruce Willis and James Earl Jones stutter offstage and never when they’re acting.”

An agent signed Emily at 16 and she went into the West End, appearing as Gwen Cavendish opposite Dame Judi Dench in Sir Peter Hall’s production of The Royal Family at Haymarket Theatre.

In 2002, she played the female lead in Romeo And Juliet at the Chichester Festival.

After her movie debut in My Summer Of Love (2004) and a Golden Globe for 2005 TV drama Gideon’s Daughter, she made her scene-stealing Hollywood debut in the role of the arrogant assistant to Meryl Streep’s dragon-lady fashion editor in The Devil Wears Prada (2006).

She also showed up briefly, scantily-clothed, with Tom Hanks in Charlie Wilson’s War, appeared in The Jane Austen Book Club, co-starred with Steve Carell in Dan In Real Life and picked up several critics’ group awards and a Golden Globe for her lead role as The Young Victoria.

Emily has been married for nearly two years to American actor John Krasinski, who co-stars in the US version of The Office, and they have bought a home in Los Angeles. She says, “I love LA. It’s what you make of it.”

She was previously with singer Michael Bublé for three years and sang on his album Call Me Irresponsible. He even wrote a love song, Everything, for her, but they broke up in 2008 and are no longer in touch.

Hugh Laurie: 'I'm pretty hopeless at goodbyes' By Jay Bobbin April 19, 2012 (ZAP 2 IT):52 PM ET

Hugh Laurie confesses that filming the series finale of "House" has been "a troubling period" for him. The antithesis of the caustic doctor viewers have loved to hate for eight seasons, the pleasant, warmly humorous British talent is trying to deal with wrapping up production this week on the Monday-night FOX drama.

The network is being guarded with details of the May 21 farewell, though reports suggest returns by past co-stars including Olivia Wilde and Kal Penn. In any case, Laurie is feeling the impact of the end. "Generally speaking, I'm pretty hopeless at goodbyes," he tells Zap2it, "and I'm mostly not very good at hellos, either.

I think I'm all right with the in-between stuff, but this is a very long, protracted goodbye to a character and to about 300 people I've worked with for eight years. This has been very emotional, and it continues to be."

Luke Evans Talks THE HOBBIT and What It’s Like to Shoot at 48 Frames Per Second on the RED EPIC by Steve 'Frosty' Weintraub Posted:April 18th, 2012 at 7:42 pm (COLLIDER)

With director James McTeigue‘s (V for Vendetta, Ninja Assassin) The Raven opening April 27, earlier today I got to speak with Luke Evans by phone since he’s busy shooting Peter Jackson‘s The Hobbit movies in New Zealand. If you’re not familiar with The Raven, the story takes place in 1840s Baltimore where a series of grisly murders appear to have been inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe (played by John Cusack). Poe and a detective (Evans) must team up to find the killer before he takes out the woman Poe loves (Alice Eve). The film also stars Oliver Jackson-Cohen, and Brendan Gleeson. For more on the film, here’s the trailer and 40 images.

While I’ll have the full interview with Evans online next week, I wanted to share what he said about The Hobbit today. As most of you know, Jackson is shooting the films digitally on the RED EPIC in 3D and he’s pushing the boundaries of cinema forward by filming 48fps (frames per second) instead of the normal 24fps. What that means is, you’ll see very little motion blur when the camera moves or during the action scenes. I’ve seen 48fps and 60fps first hand and it’s like you’re looking through a window without any glass. It’s incredible. For more on 48fps, here’s Jackson’s recent video blog. Anyway, Evans talks about his reaction to this new way of filming and what it means to be involved in the films.

Gerard Butler May Be Going On A Rambo-Style Manhunt 2012-04-18 10:04:17 Author: Sean O'Connell (CINEMA BLEND)

Gerard Butler has entered advanced negotiations to join Manhunt, a project that can not be described as either a “romance” or a “comedy,” which means we remain interested in its prospects. I

Instead, the Breck Eisner-directed picture follows a team of FBI agents into the wilderness of North Carolina in pursuit of domestic terrorist James Tollan, one of the agency’s most-wanted criminals. Once the team reaches the heart of the forest, however, they realize that Tollan has lured them onto his home turf, so to speak, and he’ll stop at nothing to elude their capture.

Maggie Smith words of wisdom to Judi Dench from The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (MOVIEFONE)

Silk Series two of the courtroom drama starring Maxine Peake and Rupert Penry-Jones (BBC)

Interview with Rupert Penry-Jones
Date: 18.04.2012
Last updated: 18.04.2012 at 10.48
Category: BBC One; Drama

Rupert Penry-Jones stars as Clive Reader in the returning series of Silk, on BBC One.

What attracted you to Silk as a drama?

It’s about normal people dealing with exceptional situations. The dilemma of a barrister who is defending someone who is guilty or who’s prosecuting someone who might be innocent is always going to be interesting. You get everyday people doing their jobs, working with people who are murderers, you know, shaking hands with a murderer. The show can feature anyone from every walk of life, in any job. It’s like a police show in that respect – there are so many different characters and stories you can draw from and I love that aspect.

Do we see Clive struggle with any moral dilemmas this series?

I don’t think so actually. It’s Martha that seems to have these sort of moral dilemmas really. I don’t think Clive really worries about the morals - his job is to do the best thing for his client. He’s had an argument with Martha about that before - you can’t just get emotionally invested with cases, you just have to do the best you can, do the best for your client and move on. Martha suffers from getting emotionally involved I think.

Alan Rickman, Judi Dench have ‘perfect’ voices, researchers say By Soraya Roberts | The Juice – 42 minutes ago (YAHOO)

Apparently, the key to having the perfect voice is being British. Researchers in the U.K. have mathematically determined that the perfect voice for men lies somewhere between those of British actors Jeremy Irons and Alan Rickman. (Professor Snape in the "Harry Potter" movies did always have a way with words.) For women, it's somewhere near the voice of James Bond's M, 77-year-old thespian Dame Judi Dench.

Is "Master Bates" who he claims he is???

Give us Maggie or give us death ‘Downton’ fans up in arms over Dame rumors By ROBERT RORKE Last Updated: 11:57 AM, April 17, 2012 Posted: 11:00 PM, April 16, 2012 (NEW YORK POST)

An unconfirmed story in a London newspaper saying that Dame Maggie Smith had asked “Downton Abbey” creator Julian Fellowes to write her character, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, out of the sensational PBS costume drama has sent stricken fans to Twitter and Facebook.

Comedian Patton Oswalt tweeted, “Excuse me, Dame Maggie Smith? You are NOT leaving ‘Downton Abbey.’ ”

Smith, 77, along with co-star Dan Stevens, has not renewed her contract with the series beyond the third season, currently filming outside London. Although “Downton” has a large cast, Smith’s Lady Grantham, renowned for her flinty stare and her disdain of anything modern, such as the telephone, is clearly one of the most beloved characters on the show.

Hugh Grant says new Bridget Jones script needs to be polished (PAKISTAN TODAY)

LONDON - Roping in Hugh Grant for the planned second sequel to ‘Bridget Jones’ Diary’ appears to have become a challenge for the makers of the movie. Amid rumours that Grant, who plays Mark Darcy, (????????)  had pulled out, Tim Bevan, the producer, admitted in February that filming had been put on hold. Now, the 51-year-old insists that the screenplay needs more work, before he commits himself to the project.

“We’re all up for it, as a cast, and the basic premise is fantastic,” the Telegraph quoted him as saying. “We just need to polish up the scripts,” he said. The actor also revealed his desire of donning the director’s hat. “I don’t really know if I’ll continue doing films, but I should do directing. I just know that I’m much less inclined to do acting jobs nowadays. I never really chose romcoms- they chose me. I have no particular affection for that genre,” he added.

McGregor:Ewan McGregor: Emily Blunt got me to do accent (UKPA) – 13 hours ago

Ewan McGregor has revealed Emily Blunt talked him into using his posh Scottish accent in their new movie.

The Scot plays repressed fish scientist Dr Fred Jones in Salmon Fishing In The Yemen - based on the 2006 novel - and confessed he struggled with how far to go with the character's "prissy" accent.

"Fred's not Scottish in the book but there was no reason why he shouldn't be," he explained. "I just couldn't decide between English or a Morningside (an area of Edinburgh) accent, which is so uptight, it's perfect for him. But it's such an unromantic accent and as he's the romantic lead of the film, so I wasn't sure if it would work."

He said Emily finally persuaded him to opt for Morningside. "She said, 'You've got to do the accent'," recalled the star.

Ioan Gruffudd: Ringer Bosses Preview Tonight's "Bloodbath" of a Finale! Plus, "Happy Moments" for Which Couple? Today 10:19 AM PDT by TIERNEY BRICKER (E ON LINE)

So just how many people are dying in the Ringer season finale?

"It's a bloodbath," Charmelo teases, with Snyder adding that "a bunch" of people die, before revealing viewers will see three characters bite the dust. So can we expect at least one major character to die by finale's end? Charmelo simply says, "Yes!"

Though Siobhan has been in in New York for half the season, Bridget has yet to learn that her twin sister is alive and well, and Charmelo teases, "The two sisters will be in the same room at the same time in present day." While Siobhan has some major sister drama, she's also dealing with some baby-daddy drama, as in who the heck is the father of her twins?!

Snyder plays coy but divulges, "The season finale is so much fun. If fans had fun watching last week's episode, this will be a nice conclusion. I don't want to spoil anything. I will say this: The paternity of Siobhan's babies—that story will come to a crazy, fun, delicious breaking point with Siobhan and Henry (Kris Polaha) and a really interesting resolution. Details will unfold, and that's all I want to say."

Brendan Coyle says his private life is now off limits! By EPHRAIM HARDCASTLE (MAIL ON LINE)

Downton Abbey’s Brendan Coyle, 48 – he plays troubled valet John Bates – announces that his private life is now off limits, saying: ‘I’m never going to talk about relationship issues again. Ever. 'All this "looking for love” nonsense was a bit of a pain to be honest.’ Surely Coyle’s love life is not as traumatic as that of his Downton Abbey alter ego, jailed after being convicted of murdering his blackmailing first wife, Vera.

Gerard Butler Lays Some Game At Coachella Filed under: Gerard Butler > Coachella (PEREZ HILTON)

TODAY'S GERARD BUTLER PARTY REPORT

Any time is a good time to lay down some game on an unsuspecting lady. At least, if you're Gerard Butler. The actor roamed the desert on Sunday at the third and final day of this past weekend's Coachella and eventually found a woman to flirt with. Judging from the pics (below), he didn't get too far with her and eventually retreated, but who knows. Maybe he got her number. Ha!
