Oscar winner Colin Firth backs ill Leeds widow’s fight to stay in UK By David Marsh Published on Saturday 2 June 2012 05:00 (YORKSHIRE EVENING POST)

Oscar-winning actor Colin Firth has thrown his weight behind a campaign to stop a severely ill Leeds woman being deported to Nigeria.

He took a break from filming in Thailand to issue a message of support for Rose Akhalu, 48, of Headingley, who was diagnosed with acute kidney disease months after arriving to study at Leeds University.

He said: “Few things are this straightforward: Rose is sick, if we don’t help her she dies.

“The decision is entirely ours. I’m sure saving her won’t compromise the government’s enforced removal policy. This is an exceptional case.”

Rose arrived in the UK in September 2004 on a student visa, to study for a Masters Degree. She unexpectedly developed end-stage renal failure in 2005 and remained on dialysis until she received a kidney transplant at St. James Hospital, Leeds, in July 2009.

Rose has applied for leave to remain in the UK but was refused.

After reporting to the immigration centre as usual last Saturday she was picked up and taken to Yarl’s Wood detention centre. She was served with removal directions for Lagos, Nigeria on June 7. She was released from the centre after her lawyers took out an emergency injunction to allow her to attend a judicial review scheduled for July 24.

Supporters have launched an online petition as part of their campaign to keep Rose in the UK.

‘Prometheus’ premiere: Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace walk the blue carpet The stars came out to celebrate the world premiere Ridley Scott’s new sci-fi thriller (NEW YORK DAILY NEWS)

LONDON — The stars of “Prometheus” landed in London on a special blue carpet Thursday night for the world premiere of Sir Ridley Scott’s new sci-fi thriller.

Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender and Guy Pearce joined the director to meet fans at Leicester Square.

“Prometheus” takes its title from the spaceship in the story. The vessel goes on a mission to explore signs of alien life and the origins of mankind.

The film marks Scott’s return to the sci-fi genre after classics such as “Alien” and “Blade Runner.”

Twentieth Century Fox revealed the film has been given an “R” rating due to scenes of “sci-fi violence including some intense images, and brief language.” The worry is that the big budget film would suffer as it has a potential appeal to younger audiences, who now can’t attend without being accompanied by an adult. When questioned about this, Scott outlined that artistic integrity was his central concern, not cutting corners.

“What you don’t want to do is to undermine the fundamental punch of the movie. If it means taking things out and therefore diminishing it then you shouldn’t do that,” he said.

How eerie! Sir Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren are dead ringers for horror director Alfred Hitchcock and his beloved wife By LINDA MASSARELLA PUBLISHED: 15:36 EST, 1 June 2012 | UPDATED: 07:53 EST, 2 June 2012 MAIL ON LINE

In the first snap shots taken of Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren on the Los Angeles set of Hitchcock yesterday, it's clear the British actors have slipped right into character.

The 74-year-old Silence of the Lambs star was completely transformed into the legendary director with the help of prosthetic makeup. It gave Hopkins the long-nosed and big-jowled profile for  which Alfred Hitchcock was so famous.

Naturally slim, Hopkins was turned into a 300-pound giant with the help of a fat suit and further prosthetic make up around his jaw and neck.

Luckily for Mirren, Alma Hitchcock was naturally slender,

Some red hair dye, jewels and a period mink coat and long white gloves were all the 66-year-old actress needed to add to play the part.

Production on Sacha Gervasi's Hitchcock has been underway for about five weeks at various locations around Hollywood.

The movie looks at the period of Hitchcock's life when he was making one of the most iconic films of all time, Psycho.

Dame Maggie Smith reportedly demands Downton producer be sacked for calling her 'difficult' By HOLLY THOMAS (MAIL ON LINE)

She's a favourite character on Downton Abbey for her sharp wit and not-to-be-messed-with attitude.
And it appears that Dame Maggie Smith shares some of the Dowager Countess's ruthlessness.

The actress, 77, is said to have demanded that US producer Rebecca Eaton be axed from the show.

Maggie was reportedly angered when Rebecca called Maggie 'difficult'.

According to the Mirror, Eaton said in April: Maggie Smith is a handful. She's very difficult.'
Smith was said to be so riled by the accusation that she is apparently unable to work with Eaton in the future.

This has naturally caused something of a panic, since Maggie is one of the show's greatest appeals.

Colin Firth’s wife loses solar panel bid for listed Chiswick home (LONDON EVENING STANDARD)

She may be married to the “King of England” but Livia Firth’s attempt to go green has been turned down by planners.

The film producer wife of The King’s Speech actor Colin Firth had wanted to install a large solar panel on the couple’s family home in Chiswick, according to Building Magazine.

She had appointed an eco consultant to draw up plans for their Grade II listed home in a conservation area.

But a planning inspector has ratified Hounslow council’s decision to turn down the proposal, saying the harm done to the area’s historic setting outweighed the environmental benefits.

The inspector, Roger Shrimplin, said the panel would be “unduly large”, adding: “It would erode the architectural qualities of the listed host building itself and would cause actual harm to the character and appearance of the conservation area.”

Colin Firth: UK court halts kidney-transplant patient’s deportation, and Colin Firth lends support Esme Madill, 1 June 2012 (OUR KINGDOM)

Eleven days ago I wrote here about kidney transplant patient Roseline Akhalu who was detained by the UK Border Agency on Wednesday 16 May and threatened with removal to Nigeria where, doctors warned, she would swiftly die, being unable to access or afford vital medical care.

Brighter news arrived yesterday. Rose was granted an injunction stalling her removal to Nigeria, she was released from detention, and Oscar-winning actor Colin Firth broke off from filming in Thailand to offer this statement:

“Few things are this straightforward: Rose is sick, if we don't help her she dies. The decision is entirely ours. I'm sure saving her won't compromise the government's enforced removal policy. This is an exceptional case.”

Rose faces a fresh hearing on 24 July, when she will seek permission for a full judicial review hearing.

Roseline’s is an extraordinary case. One arm of the state, the NHS, has saved her life. Another, the UK Border Agency, is threatening to end it.

She arrived in the UK in September 2004, a Ford Scholarship student on a student visa, to pursue a Masters Degree at Leeds University. Rose unexpectedly developed end stage renal failure in 2005 and remained on dialysis until she received a kidney transplant at St James Hospital, Leeds in July 2009.

Her renal specialist Dr James Tattershall says Roseline “will be on anti-rejection medication for the rest of her life.” About her threatened removal to Nigeria, he says:

"the drugs she needs aren't available to her there. Deportation will be a death sentence. In Nigeria most people with kidney disease such as Rose has, wouldn't receive any treatment and they would die.”

Julian Fellowes: 'I am the product of strong women' The creator of Downton Abbey Julian Fellowes has spoken of his inspiration for his leading ladies, saying: “I’m a product of strong women.” (THE TELEGRAPH) By Hannah Furness6:15AM BST 31 May 2012

The writer, who has shaped such formidable characters as Maggie Smith’s Dowager Countess of Grantham, said he was brought up by female role models and admitted they had become a “hallmark” of his work.

Lord Fellowes, who won an Oscar for his screenplay of Gosford Park, said many of his female characters were “freedom fighters” and added he had chosen the early 20th century setting for Downton Abbey because it was a period of change.

He said: “I’m a believer in strong women.

“I’m a product of strong women. I was brought up by them, I’ve lived with them all my life, and heaven knows I’m married to one.”

Speaking at the Women’s Institute AGM at the Royal Albert Hall in London, he also hinted at the inspiration behind some of his most famous characters.

He told the audience he admired his great-aunt Isie, who became known for her quick, cutting remarks on the subject of good manners and prudent household management.

He added he chose to set period drama Downton Abbey in the pre-war years, progressing through to the First World War as the series went on, because it highlighted the changing society of Britain.
"The war was a tremendous melting pot,” he said. “It woke the country up.

"Here in Stratford, Maggie Smith holds a special place in our hearts," Stratford artistic director Des McAnuff said in a statement.

"One of our festival's founding principles was that we should be a home for artists of international stature as well as for our own Canadian stars, a principle spectacularly embodied in the four seasons Dame Maggie spent with us between 1976 and 1980. Her performances on our stages made an immense contribution to our artistic legacy and are still treasured in the memories of all who experienced them."

Snow White and the Huntsman: Film Review 2:40 AM PDT 5/31/2012 by Todd McCarthy (THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER)

The Bottom Line
Strikingly designed and cast makeover of the children's tale into a straight-line, romance-free action odyssey.

A bold rethinking of a familiar old story and striking design elements are undercut by a draggy mid-section and undeveloped characters in Snow White and the Huntsman. After the campy family farce of Mirror, Mirror, this second revisionist take of the year on the 19th century fairy tale strides out deadly serious and in full armor, not to mention with more costume changes for Charlize Theron than a Lady Gaga concert. Designed to appeal to teen and young adult girls and guys, this muscular PG-13-rated action adventure conspicuously lacks romance but should get a good box office ride on the shoulders of stars Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth.

The teeing up is dramatic, to say the least, giving a swift and dire account of the malevolent usurpation of the throne of a rugged waterfront kingdom by Ravenna (Theron), a stunning blonde who infiltrates from enemy territory, bewitches the widowed monarch and dispatches him on their wedding night. The king's daughter is kept prisoner in a high tower until her maturity, at which point the queen's mirror, in this case a giant golden plate that morphs into a molten statue, informs her that the status of fairest in the land has shifted to Snow White (Stewart), who represents the queen's greatest threat as well as her salvation.

Opens: June 1 (Universal)
Production: Roth Films
Cast: Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, Sam Claflin, Sam Spruell, Ian McShane, Bob Hoskins, Ray Winstone, Nick Frost, Toby Jones, Eddie Marsan, Johnny Harris, Brian Gleeson, Vincent Regan, Lily Cole

Christian Bale shows off his sweet side helping Natalie Portman with her hair on the set of new film... but he might need to work on his tender touch By SARAH FITZMAURICE (MAIL)

He is known for his roles in American Psycho and as Batman so playing a part in a love story isn't something fans are used to seeing from Christian Bale.

The 38-year-old actor was seen filming sickly sweet scenes for his latest flick Knight of Cups alongside Natalie Portman, who appears to be playing his on screen love interest.

Christian was seen tying up his co-star's hair as they stood by the surf in Malibu.

But it appears the actor is not used to dealing with a woman's tresses and judging from the grimace on Natalie's face he wasn't using such a tender touch.

Perhaps the actor needs to tap into his feminine side after playing such macho roles in the past.
The pair were also seen strolling along the sand and holding hands together which camera crews captured their chemistry.

Kate Winslet: "I Am Sincerely Grateful for My Buttocks" The actress talks about maintaining a healthy body image and says that "normality is not what we're exposed to" TERRI SCHWARTZ ON MAY 30, 2012 AT 1:32PM (I VILLAGE)

Kate Winslet has always been an avid supporter of maintaining a healthy body image -- even though she's gorgeous she's never succumbed to the media-created mandated to be a size 2 -- but now she's reached a point where she's upset that the debate about what a "normal" body is still exists.

"Better say that I'm bored of what it means that we are still here talking about it: It means that nothing has changed," the 36-year-old mother of two tells Vanity Fair Italia, when asked if she's tired of talking about the skewed perception of women's bodies instilled by the media.

"Otherwise, no, I believe it is important to go on insisting that normality is not what we are exposed to. Honestly, among my acquaintances there is no woman wearing XS. No, sorry, there is one: my daughter. The point is that Mia is 11 years old." Here, here!

Simon Pegg: Benedict Cumberbatch's Star Trek villain isn't Khan Simon Pegg has denied rumours that the villain played by Benedict Cumberbatch in the forthcoming Star Trek movie will be the classic Trek villain Khan. (METRO)

There had been reports the genetically engineered character - originally played by Ricardo Montalban - had been due to make a comeback in the new film, due for release next year.

However Pegg - who will once again play Scotty in the new Trek movie - has now dismissed this as 'a myth'.

'Everyone's saying it is but it's not,' he said. 'I think people just want to have a scoop.

'It annoys me - it's beyond the point to just ferret around for spoilers all the time to try to be the first to break them.

'It masquerades as interest in the film but really it's just nosiness and impatience.

Christian Bale Biography: 'Batman' Star Was Almost In 'Titanic' & 13 Other Revelations From Harrison Cheung's Book The Huffington Post | By Kia Makarechi

A new picture of Christian Bale emerges in a just-released biography by his former publicist and assistant, Harrison Cheung. Christian Bale: The Inside Story of the Darkest Batman, published May 29 on BenBella, reveals an actor who fought desperately to emerge from the world of independent British cinema into a complex, often incorrigible but above-all, ambitious global superstar.

HuffPost Entertainment read the book and found the following 14 details to be of particular interest. Some of these tidbits were previously covered in the media, but others -- like which of his characters he most identifies with -- appear to be new information. Before reading, consider one important note: Cheung once worked for the "Dark Knight Rises" star and no longer does. The following items are all taken from a book that is written from the former publicist's point of view. Cheung writes in the book that he was never actually paid for his years of service, so their relationship was certainly not uncomplicated.

We've reached out to Bale's representative for comment and will update the post as soon as we receive word.

1. Edward Norton, Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt all passed on the role of Patrick Bateman in "American Psycho." Though there was a great deal of negative buzz surrounding the picture (which changed directors as well), Bale felt the film could help him break into America. "I don't want to be a movie star," Bale told Cheung. "I want to be an actor. All this talk of career suicide ... I rather like that I'm running contrary to what everyone expects."

But Leonardo DiCaprio wanted the role. Lionsgate issued a press release during Cannes in 1998, announcing that Bale had been replaced. Bale was livid: "Losing this role is like having a pencil shoved through my brain." The studio offered him a supporting role, but Bale refused to consider that. DiCaprio eventually bailed after Gloria Steinem urged him not to take the role, which she said could inspire copycat murders from within his teen fan base.

The role then went to Ewan McGregor, who had just been screwed out of his lead part in "The Beach" by the newly landed DiCaprio. Bale begged McGregor not to take it, and the latter passed.

Hugh Laurie in the House! Female fans go wild as the actor kicks off tour with band after wrapping hit show By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

Hundreds of middle-aged women raced to a sleepy beach town in California last week to see House star Hugh Laurie open the tour of his blues band.

The crowd of Laurie fanatics queued for up to four hours to be the first into a small venue in Solana Beach, just outside of San Diego.

Screaming and cheering throughout his 90 minutes performance, they couldn't get enough of the 52-year-old.

Laurie and his band Copperbottom kicked off the U.S leg of their world tour on Tuesday - and tickets had been completely sold out for the opening night since November.

The crowd – mostly women over 40 – went wild when Laurie took to the stage just after 8pm, and cheered and laughed uproariously whenever he cracked a joke in his 'sexy' dry English accent.

Laurie performed his album Let Them Talk – a collection of blues covers – and looked dapper, and a bit shy, in a shabby grey suit and mustard coloured shirt.

Prometheus: Is It Any Good? Early Reviews Are In! Today 10:32 AM PDT by PETER GICAS (E ON LINE)

When it comes to Prometheus, the critics have spoken.

Well, a few of them have, at least, as early reviews are already starting to trickle in for director Ridley Scott's highly anticipated supposed prequel-of-sorts to Alien starring Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender and Swedish Girl With the Dragon Tattoo star Noomi Rapace.

"Ridley Scott's third venture into science-fiction, after Alien in 1979 and Blade Runner in 1982, won't become a genre benchmark like those classics despite its equivalent seriousness and ambition," writes The Hollywood Reporter's Todd McCarthy. "But it does supply enough visual spectacle, tense action and sticky, slithery monster attacks to hit the spot with thrill-seeking audiences worldwide."

While "elaborately conceived from a visual standpoint," notes Variety's Justin Chang, it nevertheless "remains earthbound in narrative terms, forever hinting at the existence of a higher intelligence without evincing much of its own," adding that "the film conspicuously lacks the long, drawn-out silences and sense of menace in close quarters that made Alien so elegantly unnerving."

Keira Knightley has splashed out on a new luxury pad for her and her new fiance. The Daily Mail have reported today that the Pride & Prejudice star has bought a 2.4 million pound townhouse in the increasingly-popular Spitalfields area of East London and now counts Tracey Emin amongst her neighbours. Just last week, Keira announced that she and James Righton (of electro-pop band Klaxons) had got engaged.

Keira and James' new fancy love pad contains a cinema, a dressing room, a music room and a library. Perfect for the actress and musician couple, then. There is even a studio house in the garden, reportedly. Keira bought the house mortgage-free; that's something not be sniffed at, for someone at the tender age of 27. The property was purchased via the Chiswick-based company run by her mum, Sharman MACdonald. East London may have ben considered a no-go area for the glitterati until recently, but it's been giving the West End a run for its money in the celebrity residents stake, especially with actors, artists and musicians.

Michael Fassbender is a Star Wars geek, still has his Ewok village & Millennium Falcon (CELEBITCHY)

Here are some newish photos of Michael Fassbender over the weekend at the Monaco Grand Prix, looking very much like a kid in a candy store. Fassy’s level of excitement for all things car and car-adjacent is a little bit… I don’t know, off-putting for me. I’m not a car person, obviously, and when Michael and I get together, this will have to be something we work on. Like, will he expect me to support and be an equal participant in his car and racing enthusiasm? Or can I simply say, “It’s your thing, sweetheart. I’m fine with this book. You go play with your toys”? What turns Fassy on more: a lady’s sweetshop or a really beautiful car?

Here’s a video interview with Fassy from Digital Spy (GAH HIS VOICE!!!!!):

Glamour Women of the Year Awards: the winners Glamour's Women of the Year Awards winners included two Downton Abbey ladies, Kylie Minogue, Jessie J and an honorary mention for Tom Hiddleston. By Anita Singh, Showbusiness Editor6:00AM BST 30 May 2012 (TELEGRAPH)

Downton Abbey actresses Michelle Dockery and Jessica Brown Findlay were among the winners at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards.

Dockery, who plays Lady Mary in the ITV costume drama, was honoured with the Editor’s Special Award and hailed as an ambassador both for British acting talent and British style.

Jo Elvin, editor of Glamour, said: "Downton Abbey is a beloved smash both here and in the States, with the bulging award cabinet to prove it. And how many young actresses could really hold their own in scene after scene with Maggie Smith?

"Michelle Dockery is a great actress who we'll also soon see in the BBC's Shakespeare season and the film, Anna Karenina. Of course, this being Glamour, we also love that she is a great style ambassador for Britain."

Brown Findlay was named UK TV Actress of the Year for her performance as Lady Sybil, and joked about a recent encounter with a Hollywood fan.

“The craziest moment was when I met Tom Hanks at a Bafta event in LA,” she said. “Halfway through the conversation, he got really embarrassed because he suddenly realised I was Lady Sybil. He kept apologising and saying, ‘You’re Lady Sybil! I love you!”

Keira Knightley Takes Her Engagement Ring On A Walk (PEREZ HILTON)

Keira Knightley was spotted walking around London town showing off her new fiancé, James Righton, AND her new shiny-sparkly ENGAGEMENT RING.

It looks like the Keira's new bling bling is a simple (BUT romantic!) circular diamond on a thin gold band. LOVE it!

GERARD BUTLER'S BLOODY HILARIOUS AUDITION By Jarett Wieselman @JarettSays May 29, 2012 (INSIDER)

One of my favorite activities is trolling through celebrity audition tapes on YouTube since you not only see the performances that earned the stars major roles, but also all the famous faces who tried but failed to snag such plum parts.

Downton Abbey stars Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary), Jessica Brown Findlay (Lady Sybil) and Sophie McShera (maid Daisy) have been carousing in London’s East End, celebrating Sophie’s 27th birthday. The often unkind website Popbitch reports: ‘Lady Mary took a number of the crew back to her EC1 abode for who knows what.’ Hope her puritanical screen father Lord Grantham (Hugh Bonneville) doesn’t hear about i

Tom Hiddleston: I was 'rubbish' in Thor By: Bang Showbiz (WINNIPEG FREE PRESS)

Tom Hiddleston thought he was "rubbish" in 'Thor'.

The 31-year-old star feels "very lucky" that director Joss Whedon enjoyed his performance as Thor's (Chris Hemsworth) brother Loki in the Kenneth Branagh-helmed superhero movie, so much so he wanted him to play a big part in 'Avengers Assemble'.

He said: "There was no guarantee that it was going to be such a big part, I think. And I also felt like I'd been rubbish in 'Thor' - there was no way I was going to come back.

"So it was one step at a time and I was very lucky that, as we were coming to the end of shooting 'Thor', Ken Branagh showed Joss a rough cut of the film and Joss loved it, he loved what Ken had done with it and was really about what Chris and I had done on it.

"And [Whedon] said, 'I want to take that relationship and make the stakes higher. You've got these two brothers who are fighting each other and now what's at stake is the fate of Planet Earth, because that's what's going on.' So it's really exciting."
