Shadow Dancer star Domhnall Gleeson (29) has landed a part opposite his dad's lead role in the €5m production which will be filmed over five weeks in Sligo and the east coast of Ireland.

Gleeson - probably best known for his role as Mad-Eye Moody in the Harry Potter films - will portray Fr James Lavelle, who is tormented by various members of his Sligo parish.

Benedict Cumberbatch: Parade's End – review Sam Wollaston falls heads over heels for the posh man's Downton Abbey (THE GUARDIAN)

A sumptuous period drama, with a starry cast in nice frocks and tweed, set amid tumultuous social upheaval on the eve of the first world war ... but that's about all Parade's End (BBC2) has in common with Downton Abbey. Indeed Benedict Cumberbatch, star of this show, called that one sentimental, cliched, "fucking atrocious" even. Which may be harsh, but he certainly has a point.

I actually like Downton, in much the same way as I like Corrie. But this, Tom Stoppard's adaption of Ford Madox Ford's quartet of novels, directed by Susannah White, is something else – Wagner to Downton's Gilbert and Sullivan, Moët to its Cava, Swan Lake to its Strictly.

Stoppard's script is tight and perfect, and there are fine performances wherever you look. Cumberbatch is superb as Christopher Tietjens – buttoned-up, clever, honourable, peculiarly English but also oddly endearing. The stand-out performance though is from Rebecca Hall as Sylvia, his socialite wife, who's self-centred and silly, but also so beautiful and captivating it's hard not to fall a little bit in love with her, too.

Benedict Cumberbatch on The One Show: Confirms he was taken out of context. (SCOOP IT! BENEDICT CUMBERBATCVH)

When questioned about whether his comments were taken out of context in the Reader's Digest interview, Mr Cumberbatch confirmed that they had been. He reaffirmed that Downton Abbey was deserving of all the success that it's getting and that he would never speak ill of a production that employs so many of his friends and also his father [who was in the Christmas Special].

He added that the comment "was about one aspect about the comparisons between war" in Downton Abbey and Parade's End, "and I used language that I shouldn't have used."

Also - he is NOT moving to America and is bemused by the whole press war over the 'posh-bashing' comments; especially as he wasn't even in the country at the time.

"I've got absolutely nothing to complain about with type-casting. It's very easy to say something and for it to blow up into a national debate, especially with class. It's an important debate and it should continue. [Class is] inflammatory immediately and if someone has been *seen* to say something about *oh, us poor posh people...* that will vilify me as public enemy number one because I'm posh. I didn't *ever* say that. It was very bizarre. You have to just laugh it off."

Benedict Cumberbatch of 'Sherlock' joins 'August: Osage County' cast Cumberbatch By MICHAEL SMITH World Scene Writer Published: 8/25/2012  2:00 AM Last Modified: 8/25/2012  3:46 AM (TULSA WORLD SCENE)

The Hollywood Reporter said Friday that Cumberbatch has signed on to join the cast that already includes Oscar-winners Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts and producer George Clooney for the film based on Tulsa native Tracy Letts' award-winning play.

The 36-year-old Englishman will play "Little" Charles Aiken, one of the many members of the dysfunctional Weston family who gather at the ancestral Pawhuska-area home.

Cumberbatch has become one of Hollywood's hottest actors since his debut as the modern Sherlock Holmes, with "Sherlock" airing on PBS.

Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman: 'Sherlock’ Season 3 Stories Revealed; Fall 2013 Premiere (SCREEN RANT)

As usual, Moffat is tight-lipped about what fans can expect and, instead, offered hints in the form of three simple words: “Rat. Wedding. Bow.” The words line up perfectly with another set of well-known stories from Arthur Conan Doyle’s collected Sherlock adventures – but the matching of “Bow” could prove to be a bittersweet revelation for fans of the series.

Viewers should easily recognize the connections between the words and last year’s “based on” stories:

Woman = A Scandal in Bohemia
Hound = The Hounds of Baskerville
Fall = The Final Problem

Today, Moffat followed-up the tease with his promised “Three Words” reveal tweet:

So. The three tease words for the next run of Sherlock … Rat. Wedding. Bow.

Following the same logic, which not only reveals which stories Moffat intends to reinterpret, we can also expect the episodes to air in the following order:

Rat = The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire (or possibly Moffat intends to expand on the oft-referenced case of The Giant Rat Of Sumatra)
Wedding = The Noble Bachelor
Bow = His Last Bow

Both “The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire,” which contains a reference to ”The Giant Rat Of Sumatra” (“A story for which the world is not yet prepared.”) and “The Noble Bachelor” (centered around the disappearance of a bride on her wedding night) should provide plenty of engaging story material for the show’s writers and viewers. However, as mentioned, the final story connection “His Last Bow,” has a lot of fans wondering if season three of Sherlock could also the last.

Then Hollywood decided to reboot RoboCop.

Now they're rebooting the cast.

Clive would join Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Abbie Cornish, and The Killing's Joel Kinnaman in the wasteland that is current future Detroit.

Can Daniel Day-Lewis Break The Spielberg Acting Awards Oscar Losing Streak For 'Lincoln?' AWARDS BY OLIVER LYTTELTON AUGUST 24, 2012 12:22 PM (PLAYLIST)

With festival season getting underway in only a few short days, we're about to see which actors will gain traction for the awards season ahead of us. But there's at least one major performance that we won't know about for a few months yet (or until we see a trailer), and it's one that's probably been the presumptive front-runner ever since the film was announced: Daniel Day-Lewis in Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln," the director's biopic of Civil War-winning President Abraham Lincoln, focusing on the last few months of his life before his assassination at the hands of John Wilkes Booth.

After all, it's one of the most lauded actors of modern times, who last won in 2007 for "There Will Be Blood," in the kind of transformative historical figure role that always pays dividends with Academy voters, and working for the first time with America's most beloved filmmaker, a two-time Best Director winner. Once Day-Lewis came on board, many assumed that they might as well start carving his name on the statue. But will that really be the case? Looking at history a little more closely, it becomes clear not only that Spielberg's not necessarily the Oscar favorite that he's made out to be, but also that a win for Day-Lewis would be unprecedented on a number of levels. So before people decide that it's already sewn up based on a poster that debuted this week, let's look at the stats. It's certainly true that Spielberg's films have been frequent visitors to the Academy. Twelve of his movies have been nominated for four or more awards, and three got more than ten.

But when he picked up Best Director for the second time, for "Saving Private Ryan," the film lost Best Picture to "Shakespeare In Love." And perhaps even more importantly, no Spielberg film has won an Oscar since. "Munich" got five nominations, including Best Picture, Director and Screenplay, and "War Horse" got six, including Picture (but not director). But it's fifteen years since a film by the director actually picked up an Oscar. And perhaps more importantly, no actor or actress has ever won an Oscar for a performance in a Spielberg film.

There have been plenty of nominations: Melinda Dillon for "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind"; Whoopi Goldberg, Margaret Avery and Oprah Winfrey for "The Color Purple"; Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes for "Schindler's List"; Anthony Hopkins for "Amistad"; Tom Hanks for "Saving Private Ryan" and Christopher Walken for "Catch Me If You Can." But none actually converted it for a win, and maybe it's because there were more deserving winners, or maybe it's because Academy voters have never quite shaken the view that Spielberg is a master technician first and foremost. But it's a fairly bleak precedent for Day-Lewis, as well as Sally Field, David Strathairn and Tommy Lee Jones, who are said to be the supporting players to keep an eye on, as Mary Todd Lincoln, William Seward and Thaddeus Grant respectively.

Benedict Cumberbatch’s Riveting Work Makes ‘Third Star’ a Must-See Submitted by mattmovieman on August 22, 2012 - 9:58am. (HOLLYWOOD CHICAGO)

CHICAGO – Though Benedict Cumberbatch has been delivering fine work in film and television for the past decade, he hadn’t received a great deal of attention until last year, when he played strikingly diverse characters in Oscar bait such as “War Horse” and “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,” while earning legions of fans on BBC’s “Sherlock.” He’s such a deft chameleon that it’s easy for audiences to overlook his formidable body of work.

In Hattie Dalton’s “Third Star,” which is currently available via On Demand, Cumberbatch delivers the sort of performance that would be considered a Best Actor front-runner this awards season—had it been delivered by George Clooney. As James, a 29-year-old man stricken with cancer, Cumberbatch is utterly wrenching without ever once settling for easy clichés. Though he says early on that, “The sickness may be mine but the tragedy is their’s,” referring to his loved ones, it’s clear that he desires more life than his body can give him. Hence, he’s in dire need of escape.

Much of the action takes place on the rugged coastal terrain of Barafundle Bay in West Wales, where James’s three friends have taken him for what they hope will be a life-giving vacation. Davy (Tom Burke) is currently unemployed and has been putting all of his effort into assisting his ailing and increasingly frail friend. Bill (Adam Robertson) is in the midst of a relationship that has escalated in its seriousness, yet has left him feeling ambivalent and uncertain. Miles (JJ Feild) is an icy intellectual whose once-close friendship with James was a victim of competitiveness (both men are writers). He has no qualms with sharing his disbelief in an afterlife and doesn’t bother sugar-coating it either. In fact, the entire picture had a refreshing lack of sentimentality. Vaughan Sivell’s dialogue includes the sort of scathing observations that are so brutal, they could only be said among friends without leading to a fistfight (though the film has no shortage of those). At a slim 92 minutes, the film is a trifle overcrowded with dramatic revelations, violent outbursts and a rich assortment of emotional baggage. There are elements of comedy as well, though the obscene wrongheadedness of the characters’ trip destination is a bit difficult to swallow. They couldn’t have picked a worse place to bring a dying man, apart from the morgue. The expected complications that arise threaten to tear the friends apart, as they angrily hurl numerous valuable possessions into the water, including common sense.

Daniel Day-Lewis Looks Iconic In First Poster For LINCOLN BRANDON MARCUS AUGUST 22, 2012 0 (THE MOVIE BLOG)

Steven Spielberg’s LINCOLN is an easy sell. It’s directed by Spielberg, starring Daniel Day-Lewis and loads of great actors and is all about the 16th President’s final months in office. It’s like a dream project come true.

The film, which opens in November, has only given us one official movie still. But now we have a poster to go along with it. The poster doesn’t show much because it doesn’t have to. Instead, it just gives us a profile shot of Day-Lewis as Lincoln, Spielberg’s name and, well, that’s it. Still, I couldn’t be more excited for this thing.

ACTOR and stuntman Raw Leiba has been linked to Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's remake of cult classic Highlander.

Ryan Reynolds is set to star in the title role of immortal Scottish swordsman Connor MacLeod, who battles others of his kind for the ultimate power and knowledge of The Prize.

Christopher Lambert headlined the 1986 film, with Sean Connery playing his mentor Juan Sánchez Villa-Lobos Ramírez and Clancy Brown as his evil nemesis the Kurgan. Four further films followed, along with two TV series, plus cartoons, books and comics.

The Geek Files has heard that Raw Leiba is rumoured to be appearing in the new film but the actor's representatives said they were unable to comment at this early stage.

Vinnie Jones and Ray Stevenson have been linked to the role of the Kurgan, suggesting that the mentor character Juan Sánchez Villa-Lobos Ramírez could be the one for which Leiba is being considered.

Ramirez, also an immortal, was born in ancient Egypt and took up arms for various civilisations through the ages, before adopting his current identity in 16th century Spain.

The "Sherlock" star will join Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts in TWC's adaptation of the Pulitzer- and Tony-winning play.

Rupert Penry-Jones bares all in The Last Weekend swimming scene Actor Rupert Penry-Jones has revealed that he did not use a bottom double for a nude swimming scene in ITV1's new thriller The Last Weekend - despite the freezing conditions. METRO

The actor, who plays wealthy barrister Olly in the drama - based on Blake Morrison's novel - took to the water with co-star Shaun Evans, as the two characters undertake a sporting challenge which sees them swimming in the North Sea.

And despite the fact that Penry-Jones said the water was 'freezing', he did not shy away from stripping off for the cameras.

'That's my bottom you see in it,' he said of the scene, 'I don't need a bottom double.'

The three part thriller sees the two actors as old university friends who are reunited over an August bank holiday weekend - only for Olly's behaviour to become increasingly erratic after he reveals a dark secret.

And Penry-Jones wasn't the only one who fell foul of the cold weather during filming. His co-star Genevieve O'Reilly, who plays Olly's glamorous wife Daisy, spent much of her screen time wearing just a bikini - and admitted it wasn't easy.

Henry Cavill is Christian Grey (VIDEO) (POLICYMIC)

The quest for the perfect cast to play Christian Grey in the upcoming film adaptation of E.L. James novel Fifty Shades of Grey is over.

It has been revealed that Henry Cavill, the English actor who will play Superman in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming Man of Steel, served as inspiration for the Christian Grey character.

Stephanie Meyers, Twilight’s author, told MTV News back in 2009 that Cavill (then 24) would have been the perfect Edward Cullen – one of the main roles in the Twilight book and film series, that ended up being played by Robert Pattinson, and in which the famous fictional character of Christian Grey was purportedly inspired.

The claim lends legitimacy to the rumor that Cavill was already in preliminary talks with producer Michael De Luca in his home of Culver City, California, in early July as the actor attended Comic Con in San Diego to promote Man of Steel.

As 'The Hobbit' Splits Into Trilogy, When Will The Dragon Show Up? By Max Eddy on August 22, 2012 2:08 PM EDT (DIGITAL TIMES)

Earlier this week, a fan blog posted an excerpted interview with Benedict Cumberbatch, who will voice the dragon Smaug in the upcoming trilogy of films The Hobbit, which raises questions about when this central character will actually appear in the films.

If you want to be completely surprised by the forthcoming of adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's novel brought to the screen by The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, you'd best stop reading here. What follows are not exactly spoilers, but refer to how the movies will be presented.

Cumberbatch, a fan-favorite who portrayed Sherlock Holmes in the hit series Sherlock, was one of many interesting casting decisions made by Jackson as work on The Hobbit began in earnest. Cumberbatch will be joining such familiar faces as Ian McKellen, who will be reprising his role as Gandalf the Grey. Additionally, Martin Freeman who played Dr. Watson alongside Cumberbatch on Sherlock will lead the cast as Bilbo Baggins.

In the excerpted interview, Cumberbatch reveals that Smaug -- or at least, his vocal contribution to Smaug -- might not appear in the first film at all. The interview was conducted by Anne Richardson and appeared on the Cumberbatchweb blog.

Go Behind the Scenes of Joe Wright's "Magical" Anna Karenina Adaptation Posted 08.23.12 by BrentJS (REELZ)

British director Joe Wright's (Atonement) latest movie, Anna Karenina, marks the thirteenth time that Russian writer Leo Tolstoy's classic novel of the same name has been adapted for the big screen, but before you think "been there, done that," check out the new featurette about the movie above. Not only does the featurette offer a behind-the-scenes look at the gorgeous period costumes and sets of the movie, but it includes commentary from lead actors Keira Knightley and Jude Law, who explain how Wright has "completely broken" the "rules of a period film" by setting the classic story predominantly in the "almost magical and fantastical" reality of the theater.

Guy Pearce: Hardy is a mountain (BELFAST TELEGRAPH)

Guy Pearce has described Tom Hardy as an "emotional mountain".

The actor is starring alongside Tom in the new movie Lawless and was full of praise for the British hunk.

Guy admitted it was difficult not to feel intimidated by Tom.

"It's so brilliant that Tom Hardy is playing the role, because he is the most exciting actor I've seen in a long time... And he brings a weight, an integrity and a power to the screen that is incredibly compelling?," he told website Flicks and Bits. "The first scene that we had together was me feeling like I'm running rings around this man, not being intimidated by him. And that was very difficult, because he's like a mountain, a mount emotionally and physically. I think that will translate on screen."

Downton Abbey stars mock Benedict Cumberbatch on Twitter (RADIO TIMES)

Following the Sherlock actor's disparaging remarks about the ITV drama, Hugh Bonneville, Brendan Coyle and Dan Stevens change their profile pictures

Benedict Cumberbatch is a lucky man. Whilst many would have taken his description of Downton Abbey series two in Reader's Digest as “f**king atrocious” the wrong way, he got off lightly after Julian Fellowes revealed he believes his remarks to be “taken out of context”.

And it appears the Downton cast are equally willing to see the funny side of the comments as Hugh Bonneville, Dan Stevens and Brendan Coyle all changed their Twitter profile pictures to the Sherlock actor’s front cover.

Grant's new post comes as police prepare to name the 600 victims of phone hacking.

The 52-year-old actor has been the public face of the phone hacking scandal campaign, called Hacked Off, since last July when he famously had a verbal stoush with Daily Mail editor Paul Dacre at the parliamentary Leveson Inquiry into media standards.

Hacked Off wants to push through reforms on press regulation and be funded by contributions from other phone hacking victims who were awarded compensation from, among others, News International.

His directorship move came as prosecutors in the phone hacking scandal prepare to reveal the full list of 600 victims of hacking by the now defunct News of the World.

So far, only 200 names have been revealed including actress Sienna Miller, Beatle Paul McCartney, Brad Pitt and football ace Wayne Rooney.

Matthew Rhys leans on fellow Welshmen (BELFAST TELEGRAPH)

Matthew Rhys says it's "second nature" that he "gravitates" towards fellow Welsh actors Michael Sheen and Ioan Gruffudd.

The three stars have all enjoyed success in Hollywood since they decided to leave their homeland and move to the US. However, Matthew admits that he sometimes feels homesick and seeks comfort in a group of Welsh pals living near him.

"As a nation there aren't many of us, so if we find ourselves in Los Angeles all doing the same job then I think its second nature that we all gravitate towards each other," he said during an interview for UK TV show Lorraine. "More often than not, we bump into each other in random places. We aren't always in LA at the same time, so it's a case of seeing other somewhere like Brighton or Bristol when we are on location."

Matthew is best known for his role in US TV show Brothers & Sisters, and also starred alongside Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller in The Edge of Love.

The 37-year-old star loves being outdoors and is a keen horse rider.

Hugh Bonneville - Hugh Bonneville Causes Woman To Hyperventilate 22 August 2012 11:02:55 AM (CONTACT MUSIC)

Hugh Bonneville recently made a woman hyperventilate by speaking to her.

The 48-year-old actor was visiting Los Angeles when a fan of 'Downton Abbey' - in which he plays lead character the Earl of Grantham - came up to him and became so over-excited she struggled to breath correctly.

He told BANG Showbiz: ''I think Americans generally are more at ease with coming up to you and saying, 'We really love the show.' In Britain, we get this, 'Don't look now...' sort of thing. Recently I was in the farmer's market in Los Angeles just doing some shopping and maybe six or seven people came up to us over the course of a couple of hours and wanted to talk to us about the show. Very simple, not mad or anything.

''Well one woman was - she started hyperventilating; bless her. We had to sort of talk her down, calm her down. But here we are very bad at concealing it and just saying hello. It's less painful in the US.''

Kenneth Branagh Talks WALLANDER Season 3, JACK RYAN, His Desire to Make an IMAX 3D Shakespeare Film and More by Christina Radish (COLLIDER)

Actor Kenneth Branagh returns as Inspector Kurt Wallander, the moody Swedish detective created by mystery writer Henning Mankell, for three new 90-minute Wallander stories on Masterpiece Mystery! on PBS, starting September 9th.  In Season 3, the depressed but fascinating cop tries to improve his disposition, while contending with torture killings, dashed romance, homicidal do-gooders and a resentful grown-up daughter.

During this recent exclusive interview with Collider, Kenneth Branagh talked about what he thinks makes Kurt Wallander one of the most popular detectives in the world, what fans can expect from this third series of movies, how having a woman in his life and some colleague changes at work affect the character, and that he’s hoping to do a fourth series of three films next year.  He also talked about the new Jack Ryan film – an origin story that allows the audience to understand how Jack Ryan (played by Chris Pine) develops into a CIA analyst – which he is both directing and playing the villain in, said that he expects to shoot from the beginning of September until Christmas, and that he thinks it’s unlikely he will shoot in either IMAX or 3D, but that he would like to do an IMAX 3D Shakespeare film.

Collider:  What do you think it is that’s made Kurt Wallander one of the most popular and fascinating detectives in the world?

KENNETH BRANAGH:  (Author) Henning Mankell told me that when he gave Wallander diabetes in the books, the sales went up.  People enjoy, somehow, this precarious thrill at seeing someone who is so raw in their dealings with life and, in his particular case, the job that he does and its extremity, in terms of its darkness, and the unrelenting nature of his preoccupation.  He’s very dogged in the pursuit of a crime.  He’s very compulsive and obsessive about that.  He doesn’t let it go.

Gerard Butler 'Not Doing' The '300' Sequel ' I wish them the best,' Butler tells MTV News of returning for '300: Battle of Artemisia.' By Kara Warner (@karawarner) (MTV)

The last time we checked in on the latest developments with the "300" sequel, Warner Bros. ended the "is this movie ever happening?" debate by finally announcing that "300: Battle of Artemisia" will hit theaters on August 2, 2013.

That leaves really only one lingering question: What about Gerard Butler? Since the actor was pretty much at the center of the original film in the role of King Leonidas, it's only right to wonder where he might fit in a sequel. Butler has always maintained that he'd be interested in a "300" follow-up — if the timing and the script were right.

But unfortunately, MTV News can now confirm that Butler will not be making an appearance as Leonidas, after all.

"Oh, yeah, I'm not doing it," Butler told us when we caught up with him for early scoop on his surfing drama "Chasing Mavericks" and possible involvement in "Battle for Artemisia."

"They're filming [the '300' sequel] right now. I wish them the best, but it didn't [work out]. It wasn't really my thing."

‘Downton Abbey’ actress comes to defense of Maggie Smith (SF GATE)

“Downton Abbey” star Lesley Nicol has hit back at a TV executive who called Maggie Smith “very difficult” to work with, insisting the veteran star is professional at all times.

“Harry Potter” actress Smith has proved a huge hit with TV audiences as the catty Dowager Countess of Grantham, but long-running rumors suggest she is demanding behind-the-scenes.

Producer Rebecca Eaton, who works for PBS Masterpiece, said, “Maggie Smith is a handful, it’s true. She’s very difficult. She knows her worth, and she’s tricky on the set, but she delivers when the time comes.”

She says, “Maggie’s a professional, she does really well, working horrible, long hours sometimes for a lady that age.

“She has a rest between takes. That doesn’t make her a snotty cow, it just means she needs a lie-down. She’s not a diva.”

Henry Cavill:'50 Shades of Grey' Movie: Newly Single Henry Cavill the Perfect Christian Grey? August 21, 2012 10:25 AM EDT (CELEBS) by Rachel Lynn Member since: July 7, 2010

The 50 Shades of Grey movie may have just won itself a new frontrunner in British actor, Henry Cavill, for the highly buzzed-about role of business tycoon, Christian Grey. And the reason for his potential jump to the top of the casting roster could have everything to do with his personal life--and maybe a little bit of Superman action thrown in.

But will Cavill really have the superpowers to be able to win the coveted (and no doubt lucrative) role of Grey in the movie adaptation of E.L. James' blockbuster bestseller of a book?

His name isn't as boldly recognizable as the hunk hot list that's so far been thrown around. The romantic Ryan Gosling has been mentioned, but his stereotypical sensitive side (hello, The Notebook) could be a bit too soft for such a part. As well, Matt Bomer's name has been used in the same sentence of James' risqué read, as has Ian Somerhalder's. The Vampire Diaries heart-throb, who seems desperately interested in taking on the role, was even rumored to have revealed he's meeting with the 50 Shades filmmakers, but that report was quickly quashed by a producer. Even Robert Pattinson was brought up initially in the now-ongoing chatter about Christian Grey. But Team Edward seems like a now-obsolete part of the conversation.

Not long now! Downton Abbey fans get a glimpse of Shirley MacLaine in action as third series promo is released By LIZ THOMAS and KIMBERLEY DADDS PUBLISHED: 16:04 EST, 20 August 2012 | UPDATED: 06:57 EST, 21 August 2012 (DAILY MAIL)

The stars of the show have been giving tiny sneak peaks of what to expect in the next Downton Abbey series over the last few weeks as they work hard shooting new scenes. But now fans have been treated to an actual glimpse of the upcoming third series after producers released two 20-second promo clips today. In the first online video, the Grantham family is seen discussing the imminent arrival of Lady Cora's mother Martha Levinson, to be played by Shirley MacLaine, who is travelling over from America in the series.

Sparks are set to fly between Dame Maggie Smith’s Dowager Countess Violet Grantham and Shirley McLaine’s Martha – Lady Grantham’s mother.

Dame Maggie’s acerbic putdowns alone make Downton Abbey worth watching.

But for series three it seems she will be fighting Miss MacClaine’s Martha Levinson for the best waspish one-liners.

The frosty on-screen relationship is already being dubbed the “battle of the matriarchs” as the pair become embroiled in a bitter power struggle.

Dan Stevens, Michelle Dockery: "I felt like Kate Middleton": Downton's Michelle Dockery on her screen marriage "There was so much security - but we didn't want people to see the dress before the big day" (MIRROR) By Nicola Methven

The wedding dress is the best-kept secret since Kate Middleton and her mum popped into Alexander McQueen’s studio.

But after two series of will-they-won’t-they, Downton Abbey’s Lady Mary and Matthew Crawley will get their big day.

And Michelle Dockery, who plays Lady Mary, says it made her start thinking about marriage for real.

Michelle, 30, says: “I felt a bit like Kate Middleton with all the security, but we didn’t want people seeing the dress before the day. I’d never worn a wedding dress – I’ve never filmed an on-screen wedding before. I loved it.

“It’s a truly stunning dress and I’m sure people will make some comparisons with the royal wedding. As we arrived at the church and stepped out of the carriage the crowds were just amazing, with all these supporting artists cheering us on.”

The actress, who lives with her architect boyfriend of three years in London’s trendy Clerkenwell, added: “It felt strange, you get those nerves. It did make me think a little bit about what it would be like to be a bride.”

The details of the much-anticipated wedding were so secret even Michelle’s mother was kept in the dark.

She said: “My mum doesn’t know we get married this time.

“We have to keep storylines from friends and family, and that is hard sometimes. But also I don’t want to spoil it for them because they watch it as fans.”

But as Dan Stevens, who plays Downton heir Matthew, says, after the couple got engaged in the Christmas special, it was about time.

“It was on the cards, wasn’t it?” he laughs. “I think we’d have been hard pushed to stretch out the will-they-won’t they storyline much longer. But there’s still some thrills and spills, it’s not all plain sailing.”

And the 29-year-old agreed their TV nuptials felt like a celebrity bash: “There was quite a lot of security and it was crawling with paparazzi.

“I didn’t actually see Michelle in the dress till she walked down the aisle which was pretty realistic.”

And after so many ups and downs, Michelle says: “What’s different for us now is we’ve been playing those scenes when so much is unsaid, and it’s all stolen moments. Now they’re finally settled.”

Downton Abbey star Dan Stevens's joy over extra passenger Dan Stevens, the Downton Abbey actor, has become a father for the second time, ahead of his upcoming Broadway debut in The Heiress. (TELEGRAPH) Tim Walker. Edited by Katy Balls7:30AM BST 20 Aug 2012

As Dan Stevens prepares to move to New York for his Broadway debut in The Heiress, the Downton Abbey actor is making last-minute arrangements for an extra passenger to join his party for the transatlantic flight.

Mandrake can disclose that the 29 year-old has become a father for the second time by his wife, the jazz singer Susie Hariet. “Baby two has now arrived — it’s a boy — and we are of course delighted,” a beaming Stevens tells me at a Samsung party in Mayfair.

The publicity-shy actor chose not to make any official announcement, but says that the birth ought not to come as too much of a surprise after his wife’s pregnancy first became apparent at the Olivier Awards at the Royal Opera House on April 15. “If you had done the maths it would be very odd if the birth hadn’t happened by now,” Stevens laughs.

Brendan Gleeson: Touching link to his parent in show (INDEPENDENT)

By Barry Egan

Away to Kilkenny, where I stayed at the adorable Pembroke Hotel, for the arts festival, which was a blazing mix of art, culture, literature and generally jolly times.

The turnout for John Butler and Liza Klaussmann's readings on a theme, Versions of America, was typical of the 10-day bonanza -- informed, eager and easy-going.

John Butler, meanwhile, who read brilliantly from his debut, The Tenderloin, has also penned a series of sketches, Good Will Fun Thing, starring Brendan and Domhnall Gleeson and Amy Huberman, which will be on RTE in December.

Proceeds go to the hospice in Raheny where Brendan Gleeson's parents were nursed.

Benedict Cumberbatch: What he really said! (GUARDIAN) Euan Ferguson The Observer, Saturday 18 August 2012

Long before Sherlock, Tinker Tailor or this week's Parade's End, the actor has won plaudits for his work on stage and screen. And his success has had nothing to do with going to Harrow.

Let's look at what he actually did say.

Interviewed for Radio Times by Decca Aitkenhead, he talked about sudden real post-Sherlock fame, touched on his personal life and lucidly compared the similarities and differences between that role and the one he brings to our screens soon this Friday, that of Christopher Tietjens in Ford Madox Ford's tetralogy Parade's End, by all early accounts winningly adapted by Tom Stoppard. Both well-spoken, tall, English and Edwardian – in soul anyway, even though Cumberbatch's Sherlock has been so vibrantly updated – and variously tortured gentlemanly souls. But Christopher is taciturn and there is, as Cumberbatch put it, "none of that hyper-articulate mental vomiting. I think people might think, 'Why would he want to do that, because it's nothing like Sherlock?' But that's exactly why."

Then, in some final throwaway comments, he touched upon, or was invited to touch upon, "posh-bashing", and said that sometimes, mainly as a consequence of having been to Harrow, he has been "castigated as a moaning, rich, public-school bastard, complaining about only getting posh roles". Aitkenhead goes on to say: "As he's one of the most gifted, intelligent and likable actors this country has produced, I'm not surprised he can't even be bothered to engage the attack. 'It's just so predictable,' he sighs wearily. 'So domestic and so dumb.' I just hope he's not serious when he adds, 'It makes me think I want to go to America.'"

And there you have it. A half-hearted sigh about being castigated for complaining about only getting posh roles, and what sounds like an end-of-interview joke. Radio Times – perhaps surprisingly for a publication normally viewed as reliable, comprehensive but a bit… Auntie – has, for the past year or two, been knocking out many interviews that have produced the lead item in the next day's papers. They are not averse to taking the slightest of controversies from a celeb's mouth and, while never presumably being actionably inaccurate, still flamming it up to the high heavens. So you can be sure that, had Cumberbatch indulged in any serious kind of rant about class, or seriously "threatened" to go to America, it would have been worked into the intro, if not the headline. And from this, our nation of point-missers erupted into an orgy of castigating him for moaning about only getting posh roles. Which he hadn't.

Downton set for downstairs love triangle Monday 20 August 2012 (RTE)

Downton Abbey's Rob James-Collier has said that his character, Thomas, will fall for a new member of staff in season three of the period drama. James-Collier plays the scheming valet in the series who is set to fall for new footman Jimmy Kent played by Ed Speleers.

"He comes into it as a bit of a mystery man - no one really quite knows who he's into. But as the series develops he gets himself into a couple of sticky situations.

"He actually realises that in order to succeed he's got to keep in with Thomas, because Thomas is directly above him and a valet is what Jimmy aspires to be. He doesn't know what the viewers know - and have known for the last two series."

The new scullery maid Ivy, played by Cara Theobold also falls for Jimmy.
